What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It serves as a way to share the news of a loved one's passing with family, friends, and community.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries play a significant role in honoring the life of the deceased, providing closure for those who are grieving, and serving as a historical record of the person's life. They also give family and friends an opportunity to pay tribute and celebrate the life of their loved one.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary usually falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, funeral homes or mortuaries may assist in writing the obituary or provide a template to guide the process.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, achievements, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include details about the funeral or memorial service.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only the basic details such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the person's life and accomplishments.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Is there a cost associated with publishing an obituary?

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

What if I don't have much information about my loved one's life?

If you're struggling to gather information about your loved one's life, consider reaching out to other family members or friends who may be able to provide valuable insights and anecdotes.

How do I handle sensitive or private information in an obituary?

What if I need to make changes to an already published obituary?

Contact the publication or online platform where the obituary was published and request corrections or updates. They will guide you through their process for making changes.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publication varies depending on the publication or platform. Online platforms often publish immediately, while print newspapers may take several days or even weeks.

Can I republish an obituary at a later date?
