Dennis A. Bates - November 06, 1989 - March 30, 2024

Departed: 03/30/2024 (ERIE)
Obituary Preview: Dennis A. Bates Jr., 34, of Erie, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, March 30, 2024.
Fondly known as “DJ,” he was born to Jacqueline and Dennis Bates, Sr in Erie on November 6, 1989.
D.J. graduated from Central Tech, Class of 2008. He went to Fortis Barber School to become a Barber and had worked at various places over the years, most recently Master Barbers of Erie.
The most important thing to know about DJ was his love of being a “girl dad”—it was his greatest and favorite accomplishment. Sadly, DJ didn’t have enough years to enjoy with his two daughters, but tried to make the most of the time he had.
With the love and support of family and friends, DJ courageously fought a long battle with depression. Although he outwardly gave love, he struggled to feel that love inwardly. Despite his mental health challenges, DJ continued to believe and have a rich spiritual faith, knowing that one day he would no longer be in pain and returned to the Creator.
Though we feel a deep loss here on Earth, we know that he is now at rest.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Donna Lane.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his daughters, Ava and Mia; his sister, Gina DiGello (Nick) of Erie; his brother, Roy Collins of Port Aransas, TX; his special nieces, Madison and Kamryn; life-long friend Alexander Lozada, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Friends and family may call at the Russell C. Schmidt and Son Funeral Home, Inc., 5000 Wattsburg Rd., Erie, Pa 16504 on Friday from 4 pm until the time of service there at 6 pm. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family in Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to NAMI to help support those who suffer with mental illness at nami.org
