Jay R Christensen - December 08, 1954 - May 26, 2022

Departed: 05/26/2022 (Garland)
Obituary Preview: Attention, J-Mart Shoppers, with deep sadness we announce that the owner and proprietor of J-Mart has passed away and will no longer be able to serve you at this time. Jay R Christensen was a man who loved to help his neighbors, friends, and family. The doors to his home and shop were always open. Jay was a loving grandpa who spent his time helping others, tinkering, and supporting his kids and grandkids by going to plays, sporting events, livestock shows and any other “fine activity” his family could dream up. Jay R loved to find a bargain and store it on his property until he or some other person he knew needed it for a project. Nothing made him happier than to dig some item he bought at a swap meet, N.P.S., or salvaged from a job site and give it new life in the hands of someone in need.
After battling cancer for several months, Jay R passed away peacefully in his home with his wife and kids at his side. He will always be remembered for his big heart, kind smile, and ability to manufacture any contraption out of whatever material he had on hand. He taught his family kindness, love, and how to turn work into play by inventing little games. We love you, Dad. You will be in our hearts forever.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday June 4, 2022 at the Bothwell Park (10350 W 11600 N, Tremonton,) from 5-7 P.M., casual best.

Departed: 05/17/2022 (Garland)
Obituary Preview: Philip Jacobson Spjut, 94, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, May 17, 2022 at his home in Garland, UT. Phil was born on December 7,1927 in SLC UT to Swen Algot Spjut and Linnea Jacobson Spjut. Born and raised a full-blooded Swede, both of his parents immigrated to the USA from Sweden while in their youth. Phil grew up in the center of SLC and attended Granite High School. It was there that he was nominated as “Dream boy” for his handsome looks. Phil was a World War II Veteran. He attended the University of Utah in pre-dental. It was at that time he met the love of his life and wife of 72 years. Maida Jeanne Hutchinson (who is also 94 years old). They were married in the Salt Lake Temple August 26, 1949. They have 5 children. They moved to Chicago to attend dental school at Loyola University.
Phil was a hard worker, working 3 jobs while attending dental school. They moved to Lehi, UT in 1955 where he set up a private practice. Then in 1962 they moved to Northridge, California then to Hesperia, California in 1965. They finally landed in Bountiful, Utah in 1966 where they lived for 32 years.
Phil worked as a dentist at the Veterans Hospital in SLC. They moved to Garland, Utah and have resided there for the past 22 years. Phil and Maida have always had many friends. Phil had a quick wit and was well known for his corny jokes. He had an amazing memory. His love of history surpasses most. His grandchildren loved to try to “stump Grandpa” with something from history they learned in school. It was almost impossible. He knew what went on in most of the world at any given date in history. He was a brilliant man who loved books. He was well known for his interesting and informative gospel doctrine lessons in his church.
He was well loved, and recently reflected that he had a life full of joy. Phil was a simple man, who often said “family is everything!”. He loved fishing, golfing and working in his yard. He kept a beautiful flower and vegetable garden. He could name almost any flower or tree when asked. Phil taught by example rather than by lecture. He often expressed gratitude to live in a country of independence and freedom. He and his wife Maida have created a legacy of love and appreciation of nature for their posterity. Even into his 94th year, Phil walked at least 1 mile every day. For him, walking was essential to his sense of happiness and well-being.
His children and their spouses are David Philip Spjut, SLC, Randal James Spjut, St. George, GayLyn (Russell) White, Tremonton, Timothy Alan Spjut (deceased) and Lisa Marie (Craig) Carter, Morgan. Gary’s education began at Park Valley School and continued at Box Elder High, Ogden High, Weber College, and the University of Utah culminating in a well-deserved degree from the “School of Hard Knocks.”
It was at Ogden High that he met and fell in love with his red-headed dancing partner, Dottie, who would become his eternal companion. Gary and Dorothy Jean Evans were married on August 22, 1948 and were later sealed for eternity in the Logan Temple on April 23, 1954. In mortality, they enjoyed nearly 67 years of marriage. Five children were born to their union: Gregory Guy (Wendy) Rose, Nancy Kathleen (Brent) Scott, Brent LeRoy (Janet) Rose, Christie (Scott) Sandall, and Sheri (Bob) Payne. His posterity also includes 20 grandchildren and 66 (soon to be 68) great-grandchildren.
Community and church service was the hallmark of Gary’s life. In addition to being a great father and grandfather, he served as ward clerk, high councilor, bishop, and in other callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as Utah Cattlemen’s President, Utah Beef Council chairman, Utah’s representative on the National Livestock and Meat Board, and president of various livestock, soil conservation, and irrigation companies. Gary was honored as the “Utah Cattlemen’s Rancher of the Year” and later as the Box Elder County honoree for the Ogden Pioneer Days “National Day of the American Cowboy.” He was a true cowboy and gentleman, and a friend to all he encountered.
However, Gary’s greatest honor and joy were his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was deeply grateful for and pleased with each and every one. His passing leaves a hole in the hearts of his family and friends.
He is survived by his five children and their spouses and was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Rose, his grandson, Wade Brent Rose, and his parents.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 18, 2022, at the Park Valley Ward at 12 noon with viewings on Tuesday, May 17, 2022, from 6-8 p.m. at the Rogers & Taylor Funeral Home located at 111 North 100 East in Tremonton, Utah and on Wednesday prior to the funeral at the church from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. in Park Valley, Utah. Kristin Mekielle Jackman - June 22, 1989 - May 08, 2022

Departed: 05/08/2022 (Garland)
Obituary Preview: Kristin Mekielle Jackman June 22, 1989- May 8, 2022. Kristin passed away unexpectedly in the early hours of May 8th. She was always one to keep us guessing throughout her life and has kept that tradition alive up to the end of her mortal existence. Kristin was born in Panaji Goa, India June 22, 1989 and placed into her parents loving arms in the Salt Lake Airport on a snowy chilly morning the 13th of February 1990. She was a stunning beauty even then. It was hard not to fall in love with those big beautiful brown eyes. Family has always been a special part of Kristin. She was encompassed by a loving family that first morning, will be put to rest surrounded by her earthly family, and has been reunited with a heavenly family ready to wrap their arms around her and guide her to the next part of her life.
Kristin loved big and she loved hard. Those on the receiving end were blessed by that love. We all wish she would have loved herself as much as she loved others. Her love frequently looked past any and all shortcomings. She would call just to hear your voice and feel close to her family and we'll miss that now. Kristin placed a high priority on her love language and spent time and money to make sure that thoughtful gifts were always given, although the gift of her presence was oftentimes enough and what we wanted the most. Kristin was no stranger to doing things the hard way, always forging her own path. She was always looking for the next big adventure, and her family is glad this adventure is in a safe and peaceful place. We will miss her until we meet again, and look forward to that reuniting day with anticipation and joy.
She is survived by her ever patient and loving parents Brent & Robyn Jackman, siblings Erin (Aaron) Fisher, Nicole (John) Wood, & Devin Jackman. Nieces and nephews Jasmine (Jaxson), Jared, Logan, Harlee, Jason, Daniel, Jezebel, & Jadzia. Her furever friend Diesel. A sweet Grandma Jackman, lots of Uncles, Aunts, cousins and more. Preceded in death by her special guardian angels Grandpa Jackman and Uncle Glen with many other loved ones across the veil.

Departed: 04/30/2022 (Garland)
Obituary Preview: Oral Allen (Herb) Steed, 76, of Plymouth, Ut., passed peacefully, Saturday, April 30th, 2022, after a long battle with Parkinsons.  Though Oral was his legal name the world, his friends and his family all knew him as Herb. He is the son of George Harold (Cack) Steed and Melba Ruth Roche Steed.       Herb was always the life of the conversation or gathering.  He never met a stranger, only an opportunity to make a new friend.  He was kind, selfless, and incredibly giving.  He would pick up a hitchhiker, buy them lunch and hand them money before dropping them off.  Herb was always helping friends.  Once, when asked why he did that, especially when his Parkinson's had so limited his abilities, his reply so fit the way he lived his life.  His response was, "they have not been blessed with good health, like I have".  He never wasted time feeling sorry for himself.      Herb wore many hats in his life.  He served in the Navy.  He was a PRCA Bullfighter/Rodeo clown, for many years.  He worked at the Garland Sugar Factory, Defense Depot Ogden, Nucor Steel and shoed horses when he wasn't at his day job. He was an incredible father, daddy, grandpa and great grandpa.   His family and friends were blessed to have known him.      Herb married Lyla Hall Steed on February 4th, 1967.  They were blessed with 3 daughters, Stacy (Dave) Seamons, Loral (Trent) Thompson and Shannon (Kevin) Butler.  Herb and Lyla divorced in 1996.   Oral and Jeri Steed married in 1996.  Jeri brought 3 children with her, Sheldon Gardner, Trevor (Jenna) Gardner and Chelsie (Cory) Poulsen.      Herb is preceded in death by his parents, George Harold (Cack) and Melba Ruth Roche Steed, his sister Tammy Steed, son-in-law David LaVon Seamons, and Jim Woodward a brother-in-law. He is survived by his wife, Jeri Steed. His 3 daughters Stacy Seamons, Loral (Trent) Thompson, Shannon (Kevin) Butler, 6 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren. His 3 step children Sheldon Gardner, Trevor (Jenna) Gardner and Chelsie (Cory) Poulsen and 4 step grandchildren.  Siblings- Cleve (Sue) Steed, Dean (Jan) Steed, Linda Nelson and Melba Woodward.    Herb did not want any formal services.  He loved being the center of attention because of a story or a joke he told but he would never want to be felt sorry for or worried about.  We will be doing a Celebration of Herb's life on Saturday the 14th of May, from 4-6 pm.  We will be doing this at the corrals in Water Canyon ( included is a map and GPS pin), on the family mountain.  This is where he liked to spend his time and had many great memories.  We would love family and friends to join us.  Please come with stories to share.  He would want lots of laughs and no tears. Following a family prayer we would like to invite anyone that wants to join in Herb's last ride.  Saddle up and make the ride up the mountain to help us give Herb his final request.       We are asking that in lieu of flowers you honor Herb the way he lived.  Donate to a good cause, help a neighbor or stranger, do a kind deed, say a kind word, just pay it forward.  Hug your friends and family.   Leave a positive mark on this world, because you matter more than you think.  You touch and inspire people everyday and don't even realize it.

His positive spirit and beautiful smile never wavered through the last months of his journey. His strength, bravery and grace will be remembered and cherished by his family and friends who loved and witnessed it.
Steven was born on October 28th, 1959, in Gooding, Idaho to John Batis and Helen Gay Capener.  Shortly after Steven was born the family moved to Tremonton where the community became a large part of Stevens life from a young age.  He was involved in scouting and earned his Eagle Scout with great leaders and his mother’s encouragement. Steven graduated from Bear River High School where he sang in the choir, swam freestyle on the swim team and earned the nickname "Smiley" cause he always had a smile on his face and that dimple. He was the oldest son of 7 children: Susan, Steven, Shelli, Sherri, Shawn, Shane, and Stacy.
Steven knew right away he wanted to help people, so at age 21 he submitted a letter of interest to Tremonton City volunteer fire department and on October 1st, 1981 he was sworn in at Fire Drill. Over the next 40 years he served as Captain, Assistant Chief and retired as Chief.  He began his full time Firefighter career in 1983 at Thiokol where he worked hard to move up the ranks. He earned his Fire Science Degree in August 2006 from Utah Valley College.
While working firefighter shifts Steve started working as a carpenter for Kris Oyler and York Coburn and eventually earned his own Contractors license in November 2009. He loved working with his hands and shared his time, talents and tools with anyone needing his help.
In 1985 Steve fell head over heals for a girl at the coffee shop and after a few weeks of dating asked her to marry him in around about way and they truly have lived happily ever after. Steve and George Ann Sato married June 1, 1985, and raised 2 beautiful daughters: Stevie Jo (Mykel) Stettler, Queen Creek, AZ, Lebriann (Trever) Gibbons, Brigham City, and was blessed to be Papa to Korver John Stettler and Adley J Gibbons, the lights of his life grandchildren. Together Steve and Georgie felt they could do anything and enjoyed building their life together as a family camping, traveling, laughing, loving, and watching their children grow into loving, kind adults and building their own beautiful families. Steve’s girls gave all their strength, love and support to a father they admired and loved more than anything. He was so proud of them.
Georgie would like to give her heartfelt love and appreciation to so many friends and family who have lifted us and barred our burdens through this last year. We are truly blessed to be surrounded by so many wonderful, caring people who gave so much of themselves to help us. We would also like to recognize and thank Dr Schow, Tara and their staff at Bear River Medical Arts, Dr Brogan, Dr Soares and their team at the Huntsman Center and Kents pharmacy staff. Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary website, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information about their passing, funeral services, and surviving family members. They also help to notify others of the person's death and provide an opportunity for people to pay their respects and offer condolences.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The task of writing an obituary usually falls to the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with writing the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, hobbies, interests, and surviving family members. It may also include information about their education, military service, achievements, and any notable accomplishments.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the family's preferences. Typically, it ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers and online obituary websites allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased. This can be a great way to personalize the obituary and make it more meaningful.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to find out their submission guidelines and deadlines. You can usually find this information on their website or by calling their office.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary before they pass away. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life story is told in your own words.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the newspaper or online platform. Some publications charge by the word or line, while others offer package deals or flat fees.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's difficult to make changes to an obituary once it's been published. However, if there's an error or inaccuracy, you may be able to correct it by contacting the publication or online platform.

What's the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life and achievements.

Can I include quotes or poems in an obituary?

Absolutely! Including quotes, poems, or lyrics that were meaningful to the deceased can add a personal touch to the obituary and make it more memorable.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can search online archives of newspapers or visit local libraries or genealogical societies to access old obituaries. Many online platforms also offer searchable databases of historical obituaries.

Can I write an obituary for someone who died a long time ago?

Yes! Even if someone passed away many years ago, you can still write an obituary as a way to honor their memory and share their story with others.

What's the purpose of an online obituary?

An online obituary provides a permanent tribute to the deceased that can be accessed by anyone with an internet connection. It also allows friends and family to leave condolences and share memories in a guestbook or comment section.

Some online platforms allow you to create a "family tree" of connected obituaries, making it easy for visitors to navigate between related individuals.

How do I deal with errors or inaccuracies in an online obituary?

If you find an error in an online obituary, contact the website administrator or customer support team to report the issue. They should be able to correct it promptly.
