Ms. Anita Joan Green - May 19, 1936 - April 12, 2022

Departed: 04/12/2022 (Clinton)
Obituary Preview: Ms. Anita Joan Green, 85, passed away on Tuesday, April 12, 2022, at her niece’s home in Waxhaw, with her twin sister, Juanita, and other loving family members by her side.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, April 16, 2022 at 11:00 am at Immanuel Baptist Church with Rev. Tim Ameen officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the Clinton Cemetery.
Anita Joan Green was born on May 19, 1936 in Cincinnati, Ohio to the late Steely Siler and Gracie May Hayes Green and was the only child, for approximately 30 minutes, before her identical twin, Juanita arrived. Anita Green, a woman of strong independence and excellent leadership skills with a shimmer of fashion. She had numerous life accomplishments for a woman during her time era. Anita was a woman who took her hardships and turned them into accomplishments. Her life was not easy sailing, but she made sure to thank God during those times, as her faith was most important to her.  Her greatest struggle in life was growing up in abject poverty and being dyslexic. Due to this hindrance, she, along with her twin, failed the first grade. In eighth grade, she and Juanita were voted best all- around students due to their constant church attendance, punctuality, and distinguished grades. In high school, Ms. Anita won the history award. (Her niece and nephew always wanted her on their trivial pursuit team during game night.) During her senior year of high school, she worked 50 hours a week as a nurse’s aide. Anita was persistent on being a nurse, while her twin wanted to be a teacher. Anita made the decision for them both to become nurses. In 1955, they entered National General Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee to complete the RN schooling. While in Nurse’s Training, they were both avid tennis players, defeating doctors and tag teaming as a double threat team. Anita was also the President of her Junior Nursing Class, and the President of the Student Nurses Association in Davidson County (Nashville, TN). In 1958, the twins graduated Nurse’s Training and began working. Not too long after Anita began work, she was quickly promoted to Supervisor. Anita had a tug at her heart to travel. In 1961, she joined the Air Force. She was finally able to exercise her love for travel, visiting the majority of the states and numerous countries overseas throughout her lifetime. Her favorite trip was to Jerusalem, where she was able to walk the “Walk Jesus Took” during his last hours on earth. After Anita left the Air Force, she entered school at Memorial Mission Hospital, in Asheville to complete her Nurse Practitioner degree. Around 1970, Anita had the honor of leading her department at Cynthiana Hospital, when it was uncommon for a woman, especially a Nurse Anesthetist and not a doctor, to be a department chair. She also was the first woman deacon at her church. Anita also worked at her local VA hospital where she fought for the rights and dignity of veterans.
Due to her early retirement in 1985, Anita moved to Sampson County, where she resided for the remainder of her life. In 1986, Ms. Green along with Juanita purchased 216 Sampson Street, and the property became known as, the “Shield House Inn”. This was the first bed and breakfast to be opened in Clinton. During her time as co-owner of the “Shield House,” she, and her twin, were Co- Presidents of the North Carolina Bed and Breakfast Association, and they won an entrepreneurial award. In 2004, Anita finally decided to retire permanently until Juanita opened rental property in 2010 causing her to come out of retirement. Anita loved her family tremendously along with her dog, Rusty. Ms. Anita Green will best be remembered for her trail blazing efforts to bring rights to women, veterans, and children she encountered over the years. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her twin, Juanita Green McLamb, of Clinton; Brother, Steely Green, Jr and wife, Jan of Glasgow, Kentucky; nieces: Terri McLamb Barbee and husband, Joel of Waxhaw; Vada Williamson and husband, Stacy of Glasgow, Kentucky; nephews: Michael McLamb and wife, Denise of Ingold; Scott Green and wife, Heather of Bowling Green, Kentucky; and her beloved great nieces, Faith McLamb and Audrey Green and great-nephew, Daniel McLamb.

Mrs. Helen Elizabeth Barber - May 11, 1932 - March 31, 2022

Departed: 03/31/2022 (Clinton)
Obituary Preview: Helen Elizabeth Moore Barber of Clinton, N.C. , age 89, died at home with her daughters by her side – as a result of a 3 yr. battle with colon cancer.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, April 4, 2022 at 2:00 pm at Grove Park Baptist Church with Rev. Michael Shook and Rev. Cameron Dunn officiating. Burial will follow in the Clinton Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Sunday, April 3, 2022 from 6-8 pm at Royal-Hall Funeral Home and other times at her home.
She was born May 11, 1932 to Raymond Lee Moore Sr. (1970) and Annie Norcom King Moore (1950).  She grew up on a farm in South Clinton.  Her father was a farmer and her mother was a Registered Nurse (until her early death at 45 years old.)  On Dec. 6, 1953, she married Garland J. Barber.  She graduated from Clinton High School (1950).  She was an employee of Carolina Telephone & Telegraph as an operator (until 1963).  She met Garland J. Barber and they married Dec. 6, 1953.   She left the phone company in 1963  to stay  home to raise her girls.  She was an active “grade parent” all throughout their elementary years. She took the children on field trips, helped with classroom parties and took many homemade goodies to the classes. In 1978,  she then returned to work as a Teacher’s assistant with Clinton City Schools (College Street School and L.C. Kerr School) until she retired at the age of 60 (in 1993).
Helen was an active member of Grove Park Baptist Church; member of The Gleanors Sunday School Class; past co-chair of WASP program; past library worker at church and played an active part in the development of the church library.  Many of the children at church called her Grandma; and she especially enjoyed the church’s Senior Trips prior to her illness and was definitely a “missing presence” of the church family when she could no longer attend.
She was a member of the Women’s Police Auxillary.  She was a faithful participant at The Wellness Center until January 2019. She also enjoyed eating out, spending time with her family and friends, and reading. One of her favorite hobbies was “tatting” (which is a lace needlepoint craft).  She made many snowflakes, crosses, handkerchiefs and bookmarks.  She was so talented that she was asked to be a demonstrator at the Sampson County History Museum for many years during the Street Fair – to show people this long-lost art of needlepoint handiwork.  A special friend, Theresa Patterson, taught her how to tat and visited her often.  Theresa tatted a special cross as a personal love and appreciation to her to adorn her casket.
She loved people and talking to them.  She enjoyed cooking in her earlier years – and made many cakes that her husband took to the courthouse and other local branches of law enforcement.
Helen was a patient and kind person – and she had the best attitude with her cancer diagnosis and treatment.  She tolerated it with strength and dignity even though she was frail.  She loved to laugh and chat with people to find out if she knew their relatives.  Her smile was her trademark because she always smiled.  She had some dear friends that were loyal to her during her sickness. When a close friend died, she mourned her death in a gracious manner.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her spouse, Garland J. Barber (1985); her beloved grandson, Wesley Ryan Parker (2009) and her brother, Ray Moore (1987).
She is survived by:  her two daughters – Judy Barber Parker (Herbert Glenn) and Ruth Barber-Rich (Don) of Clinton, NC and a grandson Trey Andrew Parker (Alex) of Atlanta, GA.) and a great grand-daughter, Aiden Christine Parker (born October 20, 2021) and her cat, Elly.  She is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces & nephews and a host of friends.  Sandling Merritt and Archie Anders (Raleigh, NC) were her first cousins, but were more like brothers to her.
The family would like to thank the Doctors and staff at SMOC; Dr. John Smith & Staff (now retired); and all the friends and family that prayed for her, visited, called, sent cards and did things for her.  During her sickness, with the pandemic, visiting normally was prohibited – but to everyone that reached out in any way, please know that she was deeply appreciative.  It helped her to go on with pride and dignity and felt like she was loved. Flowers are welcome or donations may be made in her memory to: GPBC, 609 NE Blvd., Clinton, NC 28328  (Memorial Fund in her name for a special project); or to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital by mailing to: 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or by visiting online: www.stjude.org

Mrs. Eloise Clifton - October 18, 1936 - February 04, 2022

Departed: 02/04/2022 (Clinton)
Obituary Preview: Eloise Lanier Clifton, 85, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Friday, February 4, 2022.
A celebration of Eloise’s life and Graveside Service will take place on Friday, February 11 at 1:00 PM at Piney Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation with family and friends will be held immediately following the service at the cemetery.  Those who wish to honor Eloise may make a donation in her memory to Piney Grove Baptist Church, 1818 N McCullen Road, Faison, NC 28341.
Eloise was born in Warsaw, North Carolina and attended Warsaw High School where she played on the basketball team and developed a lifelong passion for the sport. She loved her ACC teams! Eloise met Francis, the love of her life, at a local gathering spot called Taylor’s Pond and the two married in 1953. They settled near the Clifton family farm and worked for many years as they raised their 3 girls. She recognized the importance of education and went back to Sampson Community college to get her associates degree later in life. Afterwards, she found a career in several administrative roles, including with the Sampson County Health Department, where she retired after 20 years. Eloise was a doting grandmother, first to Paige and Mackenzie. Later in her retirement, she and Francis kept the road hot to Richmond, never missing an important game, recital, or birthday for William, Audrey, and Faith. Eloise was a devoted wife of 65 years, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and friend to all that crossed her path. She never met a stranger, always saw the best in others, and possessed a special ability to make people feel seen and known. Eloise was a faithful member of Piney Grove Baptist Church where she took on many roles including Youth Sunday School teacher, Church Clerk, WMU Treasurer/Secretary, Special Events Committee, Eastern Baptist Association Prayer Team, and the New Mexico Missions Trip Team. Her love for Christ was evident throughout her life and she loved her church family as her own. Eloise regularly sent out dozens of cards with handwritten messages to friends and family reminding them they were loved by both her and the Lord. Her “card ministry” as it became known continued even when she could no longer purchase them herself, and she routinely requested they be brought to her at Rolling Ridge. All that received one (or many) of these special notes can attest to the warmth they evoked.  Eloise was a member of the Tea Party Ladies, the local chapter of the Red Hat Society and served many years as Communicator. Her RH Sisters became extended family in later years, and their eccentric dress and personalities brought love, laughter, and joy to so many people. We can all learn a lesson from these ladies – life is too short not to eat poundcake for breakfast!
She is survived by her children, Sandra Kay Clifton (Gene), Renee Clifton Simopoulos (Ernie), and Barbara Clifton Wood (Art); grandchildren, William Francis Simopoulos, Audrey Lanier Simopoulos, Sarah Faith Wood, Taylor Paige McCullen (Ben), and Tara Mackenzie Parrish (Will); and 4 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister-in-laws, Barbara Clifton and Teresa Clifton as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Eloise was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Francis Highsmith Clifton; her parents, Maurey Ward Lanier and Flossie May Lanier; brothers Edwin Ward Lanier and Donald Rex Lanier; and sister, Barbara Ann Lanier Anderson.
The family would like to thank the many special people that loved and cared for Eloise in her last months. A special thank you to Janice Hering for her amazing care and support.
