Obituary Preview: Nancy Jane Garbart Friend, 80, of Bruceton Mills, West Virginia passed away at her home surrounded by her loving family, on March 20, 2022, after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s Disease.
Nancy was born July 15, 1941, in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, in Fayette County. She was the daughter of the late Paul Edward Garbart and Helen Lucille (Hagen) Garbart.
Her family moved to Kingwood in the 1950’s when she was in elementary school so her father could be closer to his business interests. She graduated from Kingwood High School in 1959 and attended West Virginia University. Nancy married Daniel James Friend, from Fairchance, Pennsylvania on June 10th, 1961. Daniel was an active member of the U.S. Navy and stationed in Ridge, Maryland, where they made their first home. After leaving military service the couple moved back to Kingwood where they resided until 1995, at which time they moved to their home at Big Bear Lake, near Bruceton Mills. Nancy spent most of her early life caring for her four children and lending a helping hand to the many business pursuits of her father. Family weekends were often spent at her childhood summer home at Lake-O-Woods, near Bruceton Mills, WV. She also enjoyed the family time spent with her brother and sister-in-law at Deep Creek Lake in Maryland. Family gatherings were an important part of her life. She also led Girl Scout troops, was an avid bird watcher, enjoyed walking and biking in the woods, and loved her pets with her whole heart. She was a devout Catholic and was a member of St. Sebastian Catholic Church in Kingwood and Mary Help of Christians in Bruceton Mills. When Nancy was a young woman, she is said to have been the first female lifeguard at the Kingwood pool. As her children grew, she began a new chapter in her life by becoming employed in one of her father’s businesses, Big Bear Lake Camplands, in Preston County. Nancy held a variety of positions in the camplands from a comfort station cleaning lady, to eventually being named the owner and CEO after her father’s sudden death in 1984. Becoming the CEO of a local business gave her the opportunity to become a member of many community business organizations. She enjoyed actively participating in the Preston County Chamber of Commerce, the Preston County Convention and Visitors Bureau, Preston County Economic Council, and the Preston County Republican Executive Committee. Throughout her tenure of owning Big Bear Lake, the business was given many awards and wide recognition. The business thrives in Preston County and continues to provide employment and recreation to the community and surrounding areas. This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the camplands that her father dreamed of and developed. Under Nancy’s leadership, Big Bear Lake has provided a special place for generations of camping families to make lifelong memories.
Nancy is survived by her four children; Julie Ann Schooley, and husband Mark of Reedsville, Danna Friend, and companion Robert Fraser of Bruceton Mills, Susan Myers, and husband Bill of Bruceton Mills, Joseph Edward Friend, and wife Angie of Bruceton Mills; five grandchildren, Adel Schooley of Bruceton, Tara and husband Bruce Helsley of Kingwood, Amanda Darby and husband Jim of Bruceton Mills. Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a sense of closure and help to celebrate the life of the deceased.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or mortuary may assist with writing the obituary or provide a template for the family to use.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important details. A good rule of thumb is to aim for 1-2 paragraphs at most.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers and online obituary platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the tribute and make it more meaningful.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to ask about their submission process and any specific requirements they may have. You may need to provide the text of the obituary, as well as any photos or other materials.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance, often as part of their estate planning or as a way to ensure that their life story is told accurately. This can be a unique and meaningful way to take control of your own legacy.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only the most basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that provides more context and celebrates the person's life.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the newspaper or online platform you choose. Some may charge by the word or line, while others may offer package deals or flat fees.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

This varies depending on the platform you choose. Some online obituaries may remain available indefinitely, while others may be archived after a certain period of time.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

This depends on the publication or platform you're working with. Some may allow you to make changes or corrections after publication, while others may not. Be sure to review your obituary carefully before submitting it.

Yes! Many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial funds in memory of their loved one. This can be a meaningful way to honor their legacy and continue their impact.

How do I notify social media platforms about a death?

Much like notifying friends and family, it's important to notify social media platforms about a death so they can take steps to protect the person's account and prevent fraud. Each platform has its own process for reporting deaths.

Is it okay to delay publishing an obituary?

While it's ultimately up to you, it's generally recommended to publish an obituary in a timely manner so that friends and loved ones can pay their respects.

Can I create multiple versions of an obituary for different audiences?

Yes! You might want to create different versions of the obituary for different audiences, such as one for local friends and another for distant relatives or colleagues. Just be sure to tailor each version appropriately for its intended audience.

What if I'm unsure about what information to include in an obituary?

If you're unsure about what information to include in an obituary, don't hesitate to reach out to friends, family members, or even former colleagues who knew your loved one well. They may be able to provide valuable insights and suggestions.
