Ronald "Ronnie" Brudos - November 11, 1938 - April 14, 2022

Obituary Preview: WESTBY, WI - Ronald (Ronnie) Edgar Brudos, 83, of Westby, formerly of Retreat, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 14, 2022.  He was born in La Crosse on November 11, 1938, the son of Orvey and Leone (Elvin) Brudos, dairy farmers from Nottingham Ridge outside of Viroqua, Wisconsin.

Ronnie attended a one-room schoolhouse in Purdy before going on to graduate from Viroqua High School in 1956.  His early work included a milk-can hauling route and farming with his brother Elvin in Retreat.  He joined the Army in 1961 and served at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, Colorado until 1963. During this time, he married Vivian Kay Shields (later divorced) and upon discharge was employed at G. Heileman Brewing Company in La Crosse where he made many friends while living in Stoddard.  In 1969 the Oscar Bakke Estate was purchased near Retreat, and he started his farming career tending to pigs, beef cattle, and raising tobacco.  Additional property was purchased in 1974 to add a dairy milking operation which led to the building of a new barn, silos, machine shed, and outbuildings in 1977.  He enjoyed working with hired hands from the local community, providing them guidance and direction while developing their work ethic.  Hired help allowed many family vacations to the east coast, and business trips while serving on the Federal Land Bank Board of Directors.  They worked diligently to meticulously maintain the expanding farm operation as his pride and joy.

In 1985, his joy for life was sparked by his marriage to Pauline (Ekern) Hendrickson, a high school classmate.  They built a new horse barn for his new love's hobby and continued farming until 2002 when they retired to their home on the Mississippi River in Victory where he enjoyed watching the eagles fly over the barges passing by on the river in their front yard.  They enjoyed many leisure ventures together throughout their marriage including dancing, and coast to coast travel including trips to the Rose Bowl, Hawaii, Canada, and Mexico, as well as playing cards and telling stories.  During their 36 years of marriage their primary focus was attending as many family gatherings and events as possible to see their blended-family grandchildren grow up, and were present at multiple baptisms, confirmations, birthdays, Vernon County Fair showings, graduations, bull riding, state high school wrestling championships, national collegiate wrestling championships, weddings, and holiday events.

Ronnie enjoyed meeting people and making new friends throughout his life, especially when traveling with their camper around the country during retirement.  In his latter years, he also became president of the Walnut Mound Cemetery in Retreat and volunteered at Bethel Butikk in Westby continuing his community contributions.  He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.  He was most proud of his three grandsons, Chad, Cole, and Dylan, taking over the operation of the family farm started in 1969.  Ronnie was a gentle, humble soul who loved his family and took great pride in his community.  He will be missed by all.

Ronnie is survived by his dear wife of 36 years of marriage, Pauline.  He is also survived by his children, Cheryl (Lee) Johnson of Retreat, and Jeff (Jean Jones) Brudos of Jacksonville, Florida; Pauline's children David (Jerrilyn) Hendrickson of La Crosse, Daniel (Connie) Hendrickson of Viroqua, and Nathan (Tamara) Hendrickson of Viroqua; grandchildren Chad (Erica) Johnson, Cole Johnson, Dylan (friend, Hayley Cade) Johnson all of Retreat, Aden Jones and Liam Jones of Jacksonville, Florida; and great-grandchildren Clint Steven Ronald Johnson, and Mia, Easton, and Leighton Theobald;  Pauline’s 10 grandchildren, Jamie (Caleb) Thomas of Chippewa Falls, Samuel Hendrickson of La Crosse, Avery Hendrickson of La Crosse, Lisa (Jake) Luehmann of West Salem, Leah (Justin) Monroe of Viola, Sara (Aaron) Hagen of Hartford, Drew (Jess) Hendrickson of Viroqua, Tanner Elbert, Reggie and Ross Hendrickson of Viroqua; 9 great grandchildren, Alayna, Christian, Miles, Evalyn, Paige, Lexi, Ben, Cory and Mack; his siblings Orlin Brudos, Elvin (Rhea) Brudos, Garry (Sandy) Brudos and Carol Knorr; Pauline's siblings Duane (Stacey) Ekern of Lake Geneva, Alice Ann (Harold) Olson of Westby, Christine (Bob) Netwal of San Diego California, and sister-in-law Eldoris Ekern of Viroqua, along with many other relatives and friends.

Ronnie was preceded in death by his parents, Orvey and Leone Brudos, brother, Fay and his wife Laverne, infant brother, Luther, brother-in-law, George Knorr, brother-in-law, Raymond Ekern, and great-grandson Cal Lee Gordon Johnson.

Services will be held at South West Prairie Lutheran Church, S8466 Prairie Rd, Viroqua, WI 54665 on Thursday, April 21, 2022 as follows: 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Visitation; 1:00 p.m. Memorial Service, followed by a graveside burial service at Walnut Mound Cemetery E3608 County Rd N, De Soto, WI 54624 and then a celebration of life luncheon gathering at Retreat Sportsmans Club in downtown Retreat.

Monica L. Fortney - August 03, 1924 - April 13, 2022

Obituary Preview: Monica L. Fortney, 97, of Viroqua, passed away April 13, 2022, at Vernon Manor in Viroqua, WI. She was born August 3, 1924, to Kenneth and Stella (Simpson) DeWitt. Monica attended Liberty Pole Elementary School and graduated from Viroqua High School. She married the love of her life, Melvin Fortney, on New Years Eve in 1940. In September of 1956, Monica enrolled in the Vernon County Teachers College. She graduated in 1958 and started teaching locally at Davis, Cherry Grove and Lynn rural schools. She furthered her education at UW La Crosse and graduated with a bachelor’s degree. After the rural schools closed, she took her teaching career to Soldiers Grove and finished by teaching Special Education in Readstown and Viola. Taking a break from teaching, Monica accepted a position at Bethel Home in Viroqua as their Activity Director for 8 years. She finished her working career as a pre-k teacher at the Christian Learning Center in Onalaska.

In her free time, Monica loved to travel. She went to England with a UW Lacrosse group in May of 1972 and later to the Holy Lands in 1978 with a church group from Viroqua. Her travels also consisted of trips to the Bahamas, Alaska, California, Florida, and Boston.

Monica was a lifetime member of the Viroqua VFW Auxiliary, serving as past President, Secretary, Treasurer, and 3rd District President. She was a lifetime member of the Eastern Star and the Viroqua United Methodist Church.

Monica was a staple of strength and selflessness when it came to her family. She took great pride in her active role in each of her great-grandchildren's lives. Her profound faith and family values will forever be remembered and honored.

Monica is survived by her sons, Ron (Pat) of La Crosse, WI, Randy (Deanna) of Viroqua, WI; her 5 grandchildren: Marc (Carol) Fortney of La Crosse, WI, Eric (Lisa) Fortney of Wayzata, MN, Bill (Amy) Fortney of Viroqua, WI, Amy Fortney of Boston, MA, and Lance Fortney. She is further survived by 12 great grandchildren who she loved dearly.

In addition to her parents, Monica was preceded in death by her husband (Mel) of 32 years in 1972; a son, Alan Fortney in 1998; her brothers, Bob and Kenneth DeWitt; and her sister Beverly (Beauford) Zitzner.

A private Celebration of Life for family will be held at a later date.

Kenneth R. Terwilliger - August 12, 1961 - April 10, 2022

Obituary Preview: Kenneth Reed Terwilliger, age 60, passed away peacefully at his home on April 10th, 2022, after complications following a recent medical diagnosis. Kenny was born on August 12, 1961, at Vernon Memorial Hospital to Jim and Sharon Terwilliger.

Kenny graduated from Viroqua High School in 1979 and began work as a meat cutter first at D&W Meats and then at Super Value. He went on to work many years at Sherry Construction.

Kenny's favorite days were spent out on a boat at the family cabin in Mercer, WI, fishing for muskies. He was a master gardener and enjoyed cooking. He spent many hours in his shop working on cars and entertaining friends and neighbors.

He is survived by his daughter Karmin (Alex) Pincus; his girlfriend of 30 years Kathy Hill; her daughter Alisha (Don) Coughlin; grandchildren Ethan, Lillian, and Samuel (Pincus), Vada and Anakin (Coughlin), and Taylor and Collin (Hill); his brother Kevin (Joann) Terwilliger of North Dakota; his sisters Tracy Clancy of Viroqua, Terri (Patrick) McGuire also of Viroqua; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends.

He is preceded in death by his father Jim, mother Sharon, grandparents Reginald James "R.J." and Ardele Terwilliger, and Orlando and Edna Bluske.

Thank you to the Neighborhood Clinic for all their help and support during Kenny's treatments and thank you for the many acts of kindness over the past several weeks from his friends and neighbors.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 16, 2022, at 11 a.m. at Believer's Fellowship Church, 804 South Main St., Viroqua, with burial to follow at the Viroqua Cemetery.  A visitation will be held Friday, April 15, 2022, at the church from 5-7 p.m. and Saturday, April 16, 2022, from 10 a.m. until time of the service.

The family would like to invite all who knew Kenny to join them, following the service, at the VFW Banquet Room on Saturday, April 16th from 12:00- 2:00 p.m. to celebrate in his memory.

Obituary Preview: Darlene Sullivan of Cashton passed away on Sunday, March 13th, 2022.  She is survived by two sons, Jim (Andrea) of Lone Rock, Wisconsin and Brent of South Lyon, Michigan; one daughter, Michelle (Jeremy) Olson of La Crosse; four grandchildren: Eric, Christopher, Tyler, Hannah; special friends Alison, Aly, and Jordan.  She is also survived by four sisters: Linda (Bob) Evans, Carolyn (Roger) Anderson, Deanna (Claremont) Jacobson, and Sherry (Tom) Gibbons; one brother Monte (Darlene) Torgerson; two sister in-laws, Colleen Sowa of La Crosse and Patricia Wood of Panama City, Florida.  She was preceded in death by her husband James; her parents, Maurice and Harriet Torgerson; her in-laws Charles and Patricia Sullivan; and six brothers-in-law.

Per Darlene’s wishes no formal funeral services will be held.  Jim and Darlene’s ashes will be co-mingled and buried privately at the Bear Creek Cemetery in La Farge.  Special thanks to Gundersen Health Oncology and Hospice services, Dr. Gil Harmon and Jason Mowery RN.

Douglas James Malliet - October 22, 1952 - March 10, 2022

Obituary Preview: Douglas James Malliet, 69, of Readstown passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, March 10, 2022, surrounded by his family.

He was born on October 22, 1952, in Fairmont, MN, the son of James D. Malliet and Mary Ann (Dibble) Malliet.  Doug graduated from Holy Name Seminary in 1970 and continued his education at Madison Area Technical College.  He graduated in 1974 with a degree in Land Surveying.  He married Barbara Jabs on June 1, 1974, in Middleton, WI.

Doug and Barb were blessed with two sons – Gabriel (1976) and Andrew (1979).  Doug worked as a land surveyor for a few years and then became a school business manager for the Barneveld School District.  In 1993, they bought a farm in Kendall and Doug spent many happy days working outside on the farm and doing land surveying.  In 1998, he and Barb moved to Florida to care for Barb’s father.  They moved back to Wisconsin in 2001 and Doug resumed his career as a School Business Manager working in several districts in southwest Wisconsin.  Barb passed away in 2006.

On May 1, 2009, Doug married Sandra Moore Jacobson in Viroqua, WI and welcomed three stepdaughters to his family – Anna, Inga and Lenae.  In 2011, Sandy retired from her job and she and Doug shared a business manager position at Kickapoo Area Schools for the next six years.  Doug retired from Kickapoo in 2017.

Doug enjoyed playing guitar and drums.  He was a member of the band, The Messengers, for 11 years and played gospel music in many churches and other venues.  He also enjoyed traveling with the band Sandy played in – The DisChords  - where he helped with equipment set up, driving and visiting with people in the audience.

His passion was riding motorcycles.  He would ride whenever he could and enjoyed a few trips to Sturgis and riding all over the Driftless region.

Doug was a member of several different Lions Club, was an active member of BMZ Church in Boscobel and served on the committee for the Boscobel Mobile Pack for Feed My Starving Children.  He was a very generous man and always willing to help anyone that needed it.

He is preceded in death by his parents, James Malliet and Mary Malliet; wife, Barbara Jabs Malliet; sister, Janel Malliet Blake; brother, Dominic Malliet.

He is survived by his wife, Sandy; two sons, Gabriel (Beth) Malliet and Andrew (Terry) Malliet; three step-daughters: Anna Jacobson, Inga (Kayne) Cushman and Lenae Jacobson; eight sisters: Jean (William) Purcell, Jennifer (Donald) Kryskowski, Julie (Duane) Malliet-Nowak, Jackie (Mark Tiedt) Malliet, Jill Malliet, Jerilyn Malliet, Jodeen Malliet, Jamie (Dave Newton) Malliet; one brother, Dan (JoAnn Clough) Malliet; grandchildren: Samuel, Ella, Aiden, Skye, Dakota, CJ, Payton, Braelyn, Grace, Larry, Gwen and Diana; great grandchildren: Tayden, Brinley, Adelynn and Raylyn; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 2 at the Mt Zion Methodist Church, 21527 Mount Zion Rd, Boscobel WI  53805 at 1:00 PM. Visitation will be at the church from 11:00 AM until time of service.  A luncheon will follow at The Gays Mills Community Center.

David K. Ebbert - July 20, 1956 - February 11, 2022

Obituary Preview: David Kurtz Ebbert, Viola, WI, died unexpectedly Friday, Feb. 11, 2022, in Viroqua, WI. He was 65.

Dave was born July 20, 1956, in Kansas City, Mo. to Kurtz W. and June Dickinson Ebbert. Dave’s father worked for Consumer’s Cooperative Association (later Farmland Industries) and his work took the family from Roeland Park, KS, to Ankeny, IA, and finally to Taylorville, IL, where Dave graduated from high school in 1974. He first attended Millikin University in Decatur, IL and graduated from Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA, with a degree in Environmental Studies.

As a young adult, Dave farmed and raised bean sprouts in Quinter, KS. He moved to the Driftless Region of Wisconsin in 1999.  He put his skilled mark on many homes in the area through his thriving carpentry business.  He also had worked as an inspector for MOSA.

In addition to his work, Dave loved to travel and spend time outdoors. He enjoyed collecting fossils and rocks from his hiking trips, especially through the mountainous western states. Bicycling, canoeing, and kayaking were favorite activities; he also played a mean game of bean bag toss and table tennis. He hosted epic Wisconsin River floats for his birthday each year. He was known for his beautifully crafted canoes and boats, and he loved spending time in his workshop.

His musical inclinations leaned toward show tunes and campfire songs strummed on his ukulele. He enjoyed singing with the Ridgetones Choir in Viroqua and playing music with the Firefly Brass Band.

Politics, especially from a Progressive stance, were his passion. He frequently sparked lively debates with friends and was unwavering in his values. He was actively involved in Vernon County and Wisconsin Democratic party politics. Whether going door to door to register voters, acting as emcee for county programs, or marching in parades as Vernon County's own “Bernie Sanders,” Dave was admired for his ability to build community and to fight for social justice.

Dave will be remembered as a devoted father, friend, and neighbor whose ready smile and infectious laugh could light a room. Everywhere he lived, Dave made friends, many of them lifelong.

He is survived by his son Silas Ebbert, daughter-in-law Tegan, and grandson August, of Hayden, Colorado; sister Nancy Ebbert of Maryland; and legions of friends and loved ones.

A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date. Memorials in Dave's honor may be made to the Mississippi Valley Conservancy, a non-profit land trust works to protect land in the Driftless region of Wisconsin for future generations. Cindy Sue (Welch) Mc Dowell - January 15, 1950 - February 08, 2022

She was born on January 15, 1950, the oldest of 7 children born to Ralph and Joann (Hangartner) Welch.  Cindy graduated from St. Pats High School in Waukon, IA, Class of 1968.

She married Ron Mc Dowell on September 12, 1970.  Soon after they moved to the ridge outside of Red Mound, WI where they raised two beautiful daughters.

Cindy was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend.

She will always be remembered for her love of family, famous goulash, beautiful flowers, her jukebox dance moves, and her great love of the Green Bay Packers.

She is survived by her husband, Ron: loving daughters, Holly (Troy) Sommer and Nicki (Ryan) Nichols; cherished grandsons:  Ryan (Amanda) Lockington, Austin Lockington (special friend Melissa Vodde), Evan and Dylan Nichols; great grandchildren:  Reid, Marilyn, Dahlana, Arianna, and Charlette; siblings:  Sherry Welch, Chris (Steve) Weymiller, Terry (Laurie) Welch, Jill (Jim) Kiesau, and Kim (Amy) Welch.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Joann Welch; mother-in-law, Bernilda Mc Dowell; father-in-law, Elmer Mc Dowell; sister, Jackie Welch, Brother-in-law, Larry Mc Dowell;  and nephew, Jamie Ryan.

Vern E. Hummel - June 28, 1931 - February 05, 2022

Obituary Preview: Vern E. Hummel, 90, of Viroqua, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 5, 2022, at Bethel Oaks.  He was born June 28, 1931, to Clarence and Agusta (Allen) Hummel.  In January 1970 he married Sharon in Palatine, IL. Vern’s first job was in 1945 at the age of 14, driving milk truck.  He grew up on a farm with a large family.  His brother, Bob and he started “Hummel Construction” in IL which is still active.  In 1971 he moved to Viroqua, WI and dairy farmed.  In the 1990’s he went back to work in IL doing construction until he retired.  He will be remembered for being a very hardworking, honest individual!!!

Vern is survived by his wife, Sharon; daughter, Tanya; grandson’s, Ethan and Jacob; brother, Bob; and sister, Linda.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 11 brothers and sisters.

Duane N. Hoff - October 19, 1930 - February 04, 2022

Obituary Preview: Duane Nelson Hoff was born on October 19,1930 to Walter and Agnes (Nelson) Hoff at his family’s home in Redmound, Wheatland Township, Vernon County. He is survived by his wife of over 66 years, Dana (Carr) Hoff, a son Duane Dean of Viroqua, a daughter Deeann, a son-in-law David Morgan and a granddaughter Milana of Charlotte, N.C.

After attending high school for one year, Duane stayed home to help his father on the farm while his brother, Parker, served in the Army. When Parker returned from the service, Duane went back to high school and graduated in 1950 from Viroqua High School. After that, he attended an auto mechanics course at the La Crosse Vocational School while working at a gas station in La Crosse.

From there, Duane moved to Kenosha, where he built Nash automobiles. He then moved to Milwaukee, where he worked at Pate Oil Co. and gained proficiency in blending motor oil and manufacturing lubricants. He returned to the La Crosse area in 1954, where he drove a taxi for a while before returning to the family farm for a short time to help his folks after the death of Parker. It was also during that time that Duane joined the Wisconsin Nation Guard, where he proudly served, attaining the rank of Spec-5.

Duane and Dana Carr were married on September 3, 1955 and they moved to Retreat, where Duane drove a D-X fuel truck for Tom Dagnon. After three years, Duane and Dana moved to Viroqua. Duane spent a summer working on an expansion of Vernon Memorial Hospital, and a winter working for Sloane Brothers in Westby.

In 1959, Duane and Dana bought the Mobil service station in Viroqua. In 1968, Duane started driving school bus for Viroqua Area Schools, which he did for 42 years. In 1974, he bought Viroqua’s Mobil bulk fuels distributorship. Dana served as bookkeeper, while Duane delivered gasoline and fuel oil, while still operating his Mobil service station.

In 1961, son Dean was born and three years later, daughter Deeann came along. In 1970, Duane, Dana, Dean and Deeann assisted in the building their A-frame house south of Viroqua, where Duane and Dana lived for over 45 years. They sold the A-frame in 2016 and moved to Dana’s ancestral farm, which they purchased after the death of her family. The Carr Farm has been in Dana’s family since 1880.

In 1997, after 38 years, Duane sold the Mobil service station. He continued to drive school bus for Viroqua Area Schools until he reached age 80. After that, Duane stayed busy by working part-time at the Nelson Agri-Center, finally retiring at 85.

Duane and his family are members of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, where they had been married. He also sang in the church choir and served on the church council. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, including serving as it’s director, sang in the Viroqua Barbershop Chorus and was a longtime member of the Lions Club. Duane also loved the 4th of July and fireworks, for nearly 40 years, he and his son along with many loyal volunteers coordinated the City of Viroqua’s annual display. Duane was a lifetime member of the Coulee Antique Engine Club and his 1929 Ford Model A pickup is still in the barn at the farm. He loved Henry Ford, as he put the world on wheels and Duane tried to keep them full of gasoline.

For many summers, Duane and his family spent many Sundays waterskiing on the Mississippi. He and Dana enjoyed traveling throughout the states, including a six-week, 10,000 mile driving trip to Alaska, and several cruises. He also enjoyed collecting vintage Fords, including a 1941 Ford American LaFrance fire truck, along with reading, watching the History Channel, cutting wood and mowing lawn on his antique Farmall A tractor. He truly spent his life doing what he wanted to do.

Duane was proud of his Norwegian heritage. He and Dana toured Europe extensively and visited family in Norway. They also visited her family area in Denmark.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Parker and Darrel, a sister Bonita Jerman and a niece Sonja Jerman.

Obituary Preview: Adele Gress Skolaski, age 87, died of COVID on Thursday, January 27, 2022, at Bethel Home in Viroqua, WI.  Adele struggled with debilitating rheumatoid arthritis and dementia, and was under hospice care when she contracted the virus.

Adele was born in 1934 in Rhinelander, WI, where she also grew up.  She obtained her bachelor's degree in speech pathology at Augustana College in Rock Island, IL and for the majority of her career worked as a speech pathologist in the Cudahy Public Schools.   Adele was a 60+ year member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Cudahy WI, where she taught summer bible school, and volunteered with Project Concern, the church’s food and clothing bank.  She also served as a Girl Scout Troop Leader, and was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma and the Wisconsin Education Association Council.  Adele always loved a good laugh, was game for any adventure, and displayed endless energy, empathy, and compassion. Adele followed politics closely, was an avid reader and loved to host parties, go to the theater, watch movies, and play cards.  For the past six years Adele and her high school sweetheart and beloved husband of 64 years, Donald “Don” Skolaski, lived at Maplewood Terrace Assisted Living before she moved to Bethel Home and St. Croix Hospice in Viroqua, where she had much appreciation for all those who cared for her. Sadly, Adele was preceded in death by Don who also succumbed to COVID in 2020.

Adele is survived by her loving daughters Cori (David Heath) Skolaski of Viroqua and Renee Skolaski of New York City, and her cherished grandsons William Heath, Rowan Heath, and Nicholas Anderson.

She was born to Thomas and Lena (Anderson) Thompson on September 15, 1918.  She married Frederick V. Solverson on February 11, 1937, in Rockford, Illinois.  They farmed in the town of Franklin their entire married life.  She was a member of Immanual Lutheran Church of Viroqua.

Merle loved music.  She taught herself piano from the radio in the 1930’s.  She could play by ear and notes.  She memorized many tunes from the thirties and forties.  She had an organ she would play at Maplewood and the residents would love hearing her play with her door open.

Merle is survived by her daughter, Luanne Mc Bride of Waterloo, WI; two sons, Richard (Debra) and Frederick S. Solverson, both of Viroqua;  seven grandchildren:  Sheri Hults, Susan (Marty) Kosobucki, Lisa Gilman, James (Cassia) Solverson, Ryan (Flora) Solverson, Britt (Angie) Solverson, and Kristin (Josh) Symes;  twenty great-grandchildren:  Sara (Nick) Ozer, Jack and Erin Lubinsky, Kyle and Kaden Kosobucki, Mitchell, Matthew, and Cole Hults, Zach Gilman, Jack, Leah, Dax, Kyra, Trygve, and Gavin Solverson, Lucy and Oliver Symes, Analeise, Jordan and Julia Solverson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers:  Lewis, Blaine, Stewart, Woodrow, and Morris; five sisters:  Mae, Margie, Wilma, Bernice, and Vivian; and two grandsons, Rick Lubinsky and Frederick R. Solverson.

A Celebration of Life is being planned for this summer.

Wedwick passed peacefully in his sleep, January 24, 2022.  He was 85 years old.  Born September 30, 1936, he was raised on a farm in Viroqua.  He was a utility lineman until his retirement in 1997.  He was a member of the National Guards, loved going to auctions, and was involved with the Vernon County Fair for many years.  After he retired, he and his devoted wife of 26 years wintered in warm weather.  He enjoyed traveling to see new things.  Maynard was incredibly kind and would lend a hand to anyone.  He had so much love to give.  His smile, blue eyes, and sense of humor will be sadly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; brother, Raymond; sons, Bradley (Annette) and Craig (Roxy); daughters:  Lisa Antony, Tammi (Karl) Yanzer, and Tracee Farmer; 5 grandkids; 9 great grandkids; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Lois; son, Kurt; sister-in-law, Marilyn Wedwick; and grandson, Justin.

Obituary Preview: Robert Ervin Smith, Jr., 87, of Gays Mills, joined his son Jason in God’s heaven when Robert passed away January 4, 2022, at home with his loving family nearby.

Robert was born in Chicago to Robert Sr. and Wanda (Daufenbach).  He became a Chicago public school teacher for thirty years and was chosen to co-teach a gifted ed program for grades 6, 7, and 8.  For 10 years he taught art and music to these students, and his co-teacher taught language arts.  Bob also taught voice and was a well-known and respected baritone for 13 years at Lyric Opera of Chicago.  He sang continually thoughout the area in many diverse venues.  One of Bob’s favorite events was singing in Viroqua with Paul Berquist and the Ridge Tones choir for several years.

Robert married Geraldine (Fontana) whom he had met at Teachers College and they created a loving 62 years together.  Robert is survived by Geraldine and their six children:  Erika of Chicago, Christopher (Stephanie) of Gays Mills, Dietrich of Ferryville, Emile (Camille) of Seneca, Damian (Claire) of Colorado, and the late Jason (Margaret) of Chicago.

A memorial gathering will be announced later in the year.  In the meantime, please hold us all in your thought and prayers.

Maren was a loving and generous wife, sister, mother, grandmother, friend, and neighbor, and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

A Time of Remembrance will be held by the family from 4 to 6 pm, Tuesday December 7th, in the Our Saviors Lutheran chapel. The family welcomes donations to the Bethel Butikk Food Pantry and Thrift Shop as an expression of sympathy in lieu of flowers.

He was born May 15, 1951, to Myron and Garnet Skolos in Viroqua, WI.  He married Elaine Nelson on April 27, 1974.  Anthony worked at Economics Laboratory in Joliet, IL until he returned to Viroqua where he worked at Nuzum’s Lumber Yard, NCR, and Wal-Mart.

He enjoyed spending time outdoors, gardening, listening to music, and had many good times with friends and family.  He was a Deacon at North West Prairie Lutheran Church and President of the Eagles Club Aerie # 2707.

Anthony is survived by his wife of 47 years, Elaine; three children:  Mark (Bridget) Skolos, Kimberly (Randy) Beach, and Michelle Skolos; four grandchildren:  Ryan Johnson, Bekka Fish, Trysten Fish, and Makenna Skolos.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Roger and Larry Skolos; one sister-in-law, Marge Skolos; and one nephew, Richard Skolos.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, December 4th at the Roth Family Cremation Center at 1:00 p.m.  Pastor Timothy Dunham will be officiating.  A visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until time of the service.

Steven Skrede was born in Viroqua, WI to Stanley and Iona Skrede on November 14, 1946.  Steven married Lana (Lewison) on September 22, 1973, in Viroqua, WI.

Steven grew up dairy farming on the family farm on Nottingham Ridge.  After graduating high school, he worked at the GM factory in Janesville until joining the National Guard at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.  After the Guards he farmed on the family farm with his dad until 1986 when he started working for Coulee Cap in Westby, WI, where he retired after 30 years in 2016.  He enjoyed riding motorcycle, his horse Nevada, fishing, watching sports and shooting his guns.  His greatest joy was his grandkids.

Steven Skrede is survived by his wife, Lana; two sons, Jon (Sarah) Skrede and Chris (Emily) Skrede; one daughter, Jenny (Adam) Emerson; sister, Alice Fauske; ten grandchildren:  Dalton, Dylan, and Bailey Skrede; Taylor Gilardi, Sterling, Madisen, Landon Skrede; Peyton, Rylee, and baby Emerson coming in May.

Steven is preceded in death by his parents, Stanley and Iona (Christensen) Skrede; brother, Allen Skrede; and brother-in-law, Myron “Mike” Fauske.

Obituary Preview: Gregory Allen Halverson, age 71 of Viroqua passed away on Thursday, November 25th, 2021, at Vernon Memorial Hospital.  He was born on November 5th, 1950, to Stanley (LaVerne) and Muriel (Skrede) Halverson of rural Viroqua.  He was baptized and confirmed at Bad Axe Lutheran Church and graduated from Viroqua High School in 1968.  He worked for Beck Masonry until his retirement.  He was a skilled block layer and was well known for his beautiful brick work.  He built many fireplaces for people in the area and also La Crosse and Onalaska.  He also enjoyed woodworking and made many things for relatives and friends.  He built his own home in Purdy Valley of which he was most proud.  Greg was a quiet man who loved his family and a good friend to all who knew him.

Greg is survived by his mother, Muriel; sister Mary Ann (David) Thurin; brother Donald (Siri) Halverson, all of Viroqua.  He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Stanley (LaVerne) Halverson on August 28th, 2003.

He was born February 6,1953 in Oelwein, IA to Leland and Marion Rodgers.  Dave served in the US Navy for 20 years.  He met and married his beautiful wife, Louise, on March 16, 1974, in Hawaii.  He enjoyed going to the beach with family and friends.  Deep sea diving and motorcycle riding were his passions. When he retired in 1990, he and his family moved to Wisconsin. He loved all his dogs Ehu, Kapu, Mooker, Shadow, and Bear. He also loved his many aquariums.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Louise; his children: Ka'oko (Bobbi) Rodgers, Huliamahi (Kevin) Hagmoc, NaniAnuenue (Kasey) Boardman, and Kaimana (Michelle) Rodgers; nine grandchildren: Nikita, Kali, La'ieikawai, Kekoa, Keagan, Kanoa, Nalani, Kaleanohealani, and Keilana; 2 half-sisters, Judy Lewis and Karen Oakes Taylor; and 2 half-brothers.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents;  his very special mother-in-law, July, and  father-in-law, Lono; brothers-in-law, Roger and Daniel;  his very special sister-in-law, Ursula; and one grandson, Kasey Jr.

Obituary Preview: On Wednesday, November 3, 2021, David L. Peterson went home to be with his Lord and Savior at the age of 79.

David was born on May 21, 1942, in Viroqua, Wisconsin to Thorwald and Jean (Thompson) Peterson. He spent his childhood years on the family farm in Genoa, WI. On October 8, 1960, he married his high school sweetheart, Sonia (Molland). He was the plant manager for Mercury Industries in Richland Center until he retired in 2006 and spent his remaining years visiting family and spending time with his wife at their cabin on Lake Wissota.

David leaves behind an unforgettable legacy and so many precious memories. He was a man of incredible work ethic who held a high standard for himself. He never shied away from lending a hand and worked hard to make sure the job was done right. David had strong opinions and a tough exterior that earned the respect of others, but on the inside he carried the most gentle and generous heart. An expert tinkerer who was always taking things apart to figure out how they worked, there was no problem that couldn’t be solved and no item that couldn’t be fixed with his inventive, clever mind.

No matter how many birthday candles were on his German Sweet Chocolate Cake, David was always a kid at heart with a spirited sense of humor and a love of practical jokes. You could find him belly-laughing with his grandkids on the shore of Lake Wissota as they launched fireworks in the general direction of some very startled fisherman, or spinning wild stories to a child on his lap with that mischievous sparkle in his eye. No matter how tall the tale, David magically made it seem possible.

While David was lighthearted with an unforgettable sense of humor, he was also a man of deep, abiding faith. His unwavering commitment to the Lord set an example for everyone around him and continues to bless the generations after him. He loved Gaither music, and we will never forget his deep, rumbling voice as he sang along in the background or read from his bible for the annual Christmas story.

The empty space that’s left in the wake of his passing is enormous, but his memory and his legacy of faith are unforgettable. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Sonia, and their 3 children: Kim (Randy) Strop of New Prague, MN, Kathy (Jeff) Newman of McFarland, WI, and Kevin (Kimberly) Peterson of Keller, TX. His memory and stories will also live on through his 10 grandchildren and 10 (soon to be 12!) great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by his siblings:  Michael (Monica) Peterson, Allan (Deborah) Peterson, Keith (Karen) Peterson, Mark (Rhonna) Peterson, and Beth (Jonathan) Petersen.

He is preceded in death by his father, Thorwald Peterson and mother, Jean Peterson.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 13, at Bad Axe Lutheran Church with Pastor Don Greven officiating. A visitation will be held at the church from 10:00 until service time.
