Dwight Ambrose Bell - August 05, 1927 - May 02, 2024

Departed: 05/02/2024 (Sunfield)
Obituary Preview: Dwight Ambrose Bell, 96, was called to his heavenly home on May 2, 2024.  Born the youngest of three sons to Robert D. and Jessie E. (Nightingale) Bell in rural Kingston, Michigan, he was a resident of Lansing and Okemos most of his life until health issues forced a recent move to the Grand Rapids area.  A devotee of history, he was a part of history himself, being in the last class that attended old Central High and being in that first group of students that entered new, unfinished Sexton High in February 1943.  He was a civil engineering graduate of Michigan State College in 1949.  He cut his last college class to marry the love of his life, the former Dorothy Allen of Mayville, a marriage that lasted 69 years.  To this union was born a daughter, Susan, now Mrs. Phillip Race of Hudsonville, who, with Phil, have been Dwight’s care-givers since 2020.  After college graduation, Dwight began working as a design engineer for the then Michigan State Highway Department. He retired in 1989 after 40 years of service, including credit for two years in the military. While with MDOT, he defended it in nearly three dozen accident suit trials, which he continued in a consultant role for ten years beyond retirement.
In the last year before retiring he was asked to contribute to a chapter on roadside safety in a national publication used by all the states.  He thus ended a 65-year career in the highway industry, beginning as a 19-year-old surveyor and ending in 2011 as part of a combined government-industry team evaluating award-winning asphalt pavements.   A person of many interests, he had a fascination with aviation, something that began at age four.  Dwight and Dorothy first joined South Baptist Church in 1949. In 1952 that church asked some of its members to help rescue a failing Russian Baptist church in Lansing’s north end.  At 25, Dwight was church treasurer of what became Calvary Baptist Church.  Dwight went on to serve for 60 years holding various church offices and responsibilities. Forced to relocate, he resigned as board secretary of the Spanish American Mission, which supports pastors and builds churches in Mexico, something close to his heart since 1949.  He was currently a member of South Church and an associate member of Community Bible Church, near the U.P. family cottage in Strongs. MI.  He was preceded in death by his wife “Dot”, his parents, older brothers and wives, Preston (Eileen) and Donald (Maxine), and was the last surviving of 45 blood relatives of his generation.  He is survived by daughter Susan (Phil) Race, grandchildren Nathan (Cierra) Race, Morgan (fiancé, Jonathan Evans), and Austin Race, and one great-granddaughter, Myra, along with several nieces and nephews.  Services will be held Thursday May 9, 2024 at South Church, Lansing, Michigan with visitation beginning at 10:00 am, followed by a service at 11:00 am.  Burial will take place at Summit Cemetery in Williamston, MI.  Memorial contributions may be made to Spanish American Mission, 118 E. Exchange St., Spring Lake, MI 49456, or to South Church.

Irene Viola Siewert - November 07, 1929 - August 15, 2023

Departed: 08/15/2023 (Sunfield)
Obituary Preview: In Loving Memory Irene Viola Siewert 1929 – 2023
Irene Viola (Iszler) Siewert was born in Danzig, ND on November 7, 1929, and passed into the presence of her Lord and Savior on August 15, 2023, in her home surrounded by family.
Her core values were faith, family, and friendship mixed in with a good dose of fun.  Throughout her life she enjoyed country living filled with sewing, crafts, quilting, baking, gardening, and bird watching.  She loved her kind and helpful neighbors dearly, and even during her last days she could be found in her kitchen baking cookies to share with others.  She also kept busy doing jigsaw puzzles, sudoku puzzles, and word searches as well as playing cards and traveling with family and friends.  If she had the chance to attend live performances or other events, she did not hesitate to be included, especially when her grandchildren and great grandchildren were involved.
She quickly made friends wherever she went and the more mischievous they were, the better.  Certainly, her mischievous and adventurous spirit, along with her strong will and determination to do whatever she set out to do, contributed to her long and full life.  Her laughter, zest for life, and huge heart will be greatly missed by all who knew her, for to know her was to love her.
She is survived by her five children Ronald Siewert, Julie (Albert) Zarka, Lorna Boes, Clyde Siewert, and Joyce (Dennis) Simon, thirteen grandchildren Monica Siewert, Marc Matthews, Amie (Adam) Bockelman, Anthony Siewert, Ashley Siewert, Amanda Schillinger, Angie Zarka, Robert Boes, Andy (Sara) Boes, Beth (Matt) Purdy, Michelle Simon (Joe), Justin (Rachael) Simon, Matthew (Shannon) Simon, nineteen great grandchildren Alleyna Bockelman, Chasetin Ramsey Caudill, Bradley Beard, Logan Siewert, Hannah Schillinger, Hazel Schillinger, Samuel Schillinger, Lindsey Zarka, Lily Zarka, Alexis Boes, Lucas Boes, Laurin Boes, Meredith Boes, Ava Purdy, Elle Purdy, Natalie Simon, Paige Simon, Elliot Simon, Quinn Simon and three great great grandchildren Angelinn Pelegrino, Angelo Pellegrino, and Caroline Field.
She is preceded in death by her parents Arthur and Pauline (Strobel) Iszler, brothers Alvin Iszler and LeRoy Iszler, grandson Scott Siewert and granddaughter Tasha Siewert.

Lynwood J Hynes - October 08, 1929 - July 21, 2023

Departed: 07/21/2023 (Sunfield)
Obituary Preview: LYNWOOD J HYNES OCTOBER 8, 1929 - JULY 21, 2023
Leo and Ethel (Schelter) Hynes welcomed “Lindy” on October 8, 1929, in the room with the diamond shaped window, just north of the tracks on Saubee Lake Road in Woodbury (Sunfield Township). He was named in honor of Charles LINDberg and his Grandpa Jacob Scheter.  Leo wasn’t keen on the name Jacob, so the letter “J” (JUST “J”) was agreed on to honor grandpa.
Lindy was the end of the quiver of siblings who included Glendon (Mary) Hynes, Cecil (Penny) Hynes and Lindy’s much-loved sister Ardath (Ray) Wilcox. As a child, Lindy suffered from many difficult health issues and was hospitalized to treat his numerous lung infections and asthma.  Ethel suffered from many of the same ailments, and worried that Lindy wouldn’t live to adulthood. Ethel passed away early, but happily Lindy ended up with a full life.  Lindy saw many world changing events and remembered the first electronic light bulb being turned on in the farm kitchen. Another exciting event was the building of the newfangled indoor “outhouse” which was enclosed on the porch in around 1936.  Lindy fondly remembered riding the “brand new” bike Glendon bought him up to Woodbury with his friends where the railroad men would let the kids turn the turntable with the locomotive on it. Lindy grew up at the farm on M-43 and made many fond memories in school with his chums at Woodland School. He formed the LINDY HYNES QUARTET. They performed at numerous community events.  What a beautiful voice he had. He also enjoyed making music with his siblings while they played guitars, bass, and piano in the living room.  Lindy graduated from Woodland High School in 1947.
Lindy graduated with an accounting degree from MSU. He enlisted in the Air Force serving as a First Lieutenant during the Korean Conflict. One summer day, when he arrived home from service, he saw Ray Wilcox’s cousin, Beth Wilcox, who had grown up quite a bit in five years, and he was SMITEN!  They married in September 1955 and were married 67 years.  Lindy ordered a Pease home kit and went to work building a house for Beth on a piece of land his stepmom, Hildred Hynes, sold to him east of Sunfield.
A few years down the road Beth and Lindy welcomed their first daughter, Valerie (Gordie) Hynes Mc Caul. Robert, “Bob” (Jeanine) Hynes made it on the scene about three years later. Karen, “Kary” (George) Hynes Johnson was born over a decade later.
So very many special memories were made with the Ray/Ardath and Jack/Phyllis Wilcox families as well as extended families and good friends.  Trips to Disney, Cedar Point, Mackinac Island, Frankenmuth and holidays spent with extended family provided some of the very best memories. Many a rousing game of kick ball, volleyball, catch and long swims in the back yard led to gut-splitting laughter, a few aruguments about who was safe on home base, and plenty of mosquito bites.  Dad passed up numerous promotions which required moves, so that his family could stay together with treasured grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins, most of whom lived in the Sunfield area.
Lindy started his career at Fisher Body in Lansing where he worked as a payroll timekeeper. He was promoted to auditor, resident plant auditor and finally human resources before his retirement in 1987. He worked hard and provided well. He could fix ANYHTHING.  He really enjoyed putting on his cap and cranking up his 1928 Chevrolet, driving around with the kids laughing in the rumble seat, and Beth riding “shot gun” by his side. Driving his ‘28 Chevy down the streets of Sunfield at the Sunfield Parade and ox roast was always a whole buncha’ fun.  Lindy and Beth spent many hours at Centennial Acres playing golf in leagues and playing with family. He was 90 when he played his last round of golf.  He served as the board president for years at Centennial. He was never seen without a green and white Spartan hat on his head at the first tee.   Lindy, Beth, Jack, Ray and Ardath had season tickets to MSU basketball and volleyball games.  They had so much fun together, stopping for a bite to eat on the way home after the games. Beth and Lindy were supporters of Lakewood sports programs and enjoyed going to the games.  Lucky Lindy won a Buick when he played the GM On-Star button game at a car dealership. That was a day he never forgot.  If you knew dad, you won’t soon forget his sense of humor, quick wit and long, LONG stories.  His humor and smile will be missed by us all. He attended Sunfield United Brethren church for well over 55 years where he accepted the message of Jesus.
Lindy loved his thirteen grandkids.  He spent many, many days cheering for them while watching their sport, music, theater, dance, church and art events.  They will miss him dearly.  Lindy never met a donut (especially a white cream filled long-John) or a bowl of ice cream that he didn’t like.
Visitation will be at Sunfield United Brethren Church Tuesday, July 25 from 6:00 to 8:00 in the evening.  Funeral services are at the church on Wednesday. July 26 at 11:00.  Information can be found on the Rosier Funeral Home website.  Pastor Joe Benedict, Lindy’s great nephew, will be officiating.
Dad, you will be missed, you were one of a kind. . .

Theodore Leon Crandall - September 11, 1948 - May 30, 2023

Departed: 05/30/2023 (Sunfield)
Obituary Preview: Theodore “Ted” Leon Crandall passed away unexpectedly in his home on May 30,2023 at the age of 74. He joins his wife, Virginia “Ginny” Crandall. Also reuniting with his parents Leon and Betty, siblings Tom Crandall and Sherry Bender and Son Keith Mathis.
He is survived by his siblings Tim and Linda Crandall, his children Andrew Crandall, Shawn & Edward McDyer.
Ted served in the US Army from 1968 to 1970 as an Armor Recon Specialist with the Blackhawks.  His service included one year in Vietnam earning him a Combat Infantry Badge, Vietnam Service Medal and two overseas service bars.  Ted was very proud of his service and often shared stories of Vietnam with family and friends.
Growing up in Traverse City, he was exposed to the culinary arts by working in Michelin star rated restaurants. He often shared those skills with friends and family.  Shawn and Andrews’ school friends visiting for dinner rarely got a simple hot dog off the grill. Shish-kabobs, Lobster, Ribs, fondue and prime ribs just to name a few. He loved to try new things and encouraged his children to do the same. He brought them frog legs—claiming “tastes like chicken just try it” and then once they said they liked it asked them If they ever wondered why they never saw Kermit “hop” on the Muppet Show.
His sense of humor, to those who didn’t know him- could be alarming to some. There was an unspoken rule for bantering between him and his friends. Unsuspecting passers-by may have thought a fight was about to ensue.  His friends were family to him, and he found opportunities to keep them close. There were football parties, race and pool parties, epic golf outings and even a foot race down main street Sunfield.
He coached little league and football. He loved being involved with their growth as teammates and knowing great sportsmanship.  He took some very professional action shots of the kids during the year and presented the kids with huge posters of themselves in action.
Alzheimer’s came to challenge “Ginny” and he courageously fought to keep her safe, loved and cared for. He liked to read a lot-so he educated himself to her care when doctors were no longer helpful. He always was her hero.
The family intends to have a memorial service to be announced at a later date.
You can donate to:  Lyons VFW, Wounded Warriors or Disabled American Veterans.

Katherine Pier Mapes - March 31, 1928 - May 08, 2023

Departed: 05/08/2023 (Sunfield)
Obituary Preview: Katherine Huyck-Mapes March 31, 1928 - May 8, 2023
Katherine Pier Huyck-Mapes lived a full life in her beloved community of Sunfield, Michigan, which encompassed 95 years of her own brand of wisdom. “Kate” was known for her keen sense of humor; her commitment to supporting the town in a variety of ways, such as providing her nursing skills for her neighbors’ scrapes & bruises and general need of advice; along with her compassionate loyalty to her friends and family.
In 1961 Kate married her neighborhood childhood friend, Larry Mapes (1930 - 2014) who grew up working in his family-owned businesses; Mapes Furniture Company and Mapes Funeral Home. While Larry continued in the furniture business, he and Kate maintained life-long ties to their hometown by supporting endeavors such as the Sunfield Farmer’s Picnic, the Sunfield Fire Department, and the Welch Historical Museum; along with the town’s ballgames, parades and many other events throughout the years.
Kate’s early years were modeled by her parents, Stanhope “Doc” Huyck and Florence Huyck-Schavey. Doctor Huyck was a relied-upon and compassionate town physician who oftentimes graciously accepted a sack of produce for a late-night house call. Florence was a school teacher and gifted artist. After a day in her classroom, Florence enjoyed playing the piano and doubling over with laughter at her friends’ pranks! Kate inherited several traits from each of her parents.
Upon graduating from Sunfield High School—The blue & gold Wolves!—she entered the St. Lawrence Hospital nursing school in Lansing, Michigan. Having grown up around her father’s medical practice, Kate had a natural knack for patient care. She loved to help people and enjoyed honing her professional skills during her work in the hospital and in several private physicians’ practices. Kate also loved to tell on herself by citing some of her humorous, past incidents. As a young teen, Kate was caught by her father smoking a cigarette. Doc Huyck’s parental method of discipline was to have her continue to puff on the cigarette while he gave her a tour of his medical office. In a jar was a diseased smoker’s lung. Doc proceeded to give her a lecture on the possible consequences of her habit. Kate always said he had a way of getting his point across!
While still in nursing school Kate loved to let off steam after a hard day of studies and hospital work. One of her pastimes was to plug the shower room drains so she and her classmates could use the floor as a slip-&-slide! A teacher found out and gave her a good reprimand. After the fact, Kate felt the fun was still worth the punishment.
Kate grew up with one sibling, her younger brother Hans Huyck. Even though she loved him dearly, she enjoyed telling stories about their many childhood squabbles. When she lost him, in 2021, her retelling of their many adventures together brought her ongoing comfort.
Kate is survived by her four daughters, five grandchildren and one great grandchild. Daughters are: Kathy Black, of Grand Ledge; Becky Calabro, of Sunfield; Karen Mapes-Lerch (Bill) of Breckenridge, Colorado; and Amy Acker (Mike) of Sunfield. Grandchildren are: Ariel (David) Oltean, of Detroit; Hayden (Mari) Acker, of Sunfield; Isabela Acker and Easton Acker, of Sunfield; and Max Lerch, of Colorado. Great grandson is Roman Oltean of Detroit. Kate doted on her grandchildren and, when they were little, she loved nothing more than to get down on the floor with them and “play!” In addition to keeping a toy box for their visits, she also had a collection of her own toys; miniatures & holiday characters playing music, moving and flashing colored lights. The grandchildren shared in Kate’s delight of whimsical things!
Kate also encouraged her four daughters in their pursuits of play by helping them set up ventures such as a backyard carnival—with a real pony, for Becky— tap dancing shows provided by Karen, dressing up the pet cat in a baby buggy for Kathy, and allowing the older sisters to put wigs & costumes on Amy, the youngest daughter. Kate appreciated the simple things in life. Just taking a walk or riding her bike around town brought her enjoyment. She loved the springtime ritual of planting her flowers. Her favorites were petunias, impatiens, and—when it was still allowed—morning glories climbing up a telephone pole. She adored Frank Sinatra and so many songs from the 1940’s, which brought back her youthful memories. She sang in the choir at the Sunfield Methodist Church and enjoyed the fellowship of the other congregants. While raising her daughters, she would sometimes play a tune and encourage them all to get up and “shake a leg!” Kate donated time to the Sunfield Historical Society and Sunfield District Library by working tirelessly on the publication of the book, “Sunfield Town and Country, The History of Sunfield & Vicinity.”
She baked yummy, homemade peach pies for the Methodist Mint food booth at the park. Along with several of her women friends, she presented two fun musical numbers, to provide entertainment at the annual picnic talent show, as can-can dancers and flappers. Kate was always game for creating a costume and pretending to be someone else. She loved to tell the story about how, as a teenager, she drew a face on her knee, wrapped a blanket around her leg, and pretended to “talk” to her baby. Whenever she reenacted it, she got a good laugh! Her family always came first and she was readily available to be a good listening ear. Her girls remember coming home after school, grabbing a snack, and gathering in the living room to share their daily activities with mom; she was always interested and supportive. Kate was nostalgic and, by the time Amy graduated she confessed, she had saved all of the girls’ prom dresses! Another sentimental moment came after her daughters had outgrown their dolls; Kate, who had saved a collection of them in the basement, installed fresh batteries and fired them all up; a walking doll, one splashing in a tub, another chatting, etc. Her inner child was always alive and well! A Celebration of Life for Kate will be held graveside, at the Sunfield Cemetery, on Saturday, July 22 at 11:00 am. Please join the family for a luncheon after the service at 239 Second Street, across from the Sunfield park. Gerri Jean Hoort - August 09, 1944 - April 30, 2023

Departed: 04/30/2023 (Sunfield)
Obituary Preview: Gerri Jean (Atkins) Hoort was born August 9, 1944, in Lansing, Michigan. She grew up in Lansing, with her parents Grady and Kathalene Atkins, along with older sister Carol and younger brother Phillip. Growing up she attended Willow Street School and graduated from Sexton High School. In her childhood, Gerri loved riding her bicycle and playing hide-and-seek, while being relentlessly teased by her older sister. She knew that when the streetlights came on, that game of kick-the-can was over, and it was time to go home. In her early 20’s, Gerri enjoyed her time as a self-employed hair stylist. She spent a lot of her free time going to bingo with her sister (the casinos weren’t really a thing yet) and camping. We won’t talk about the time she wrecked Carol’s car. Moving on to Gerri’s 30’s, no one can forget the time she was a L’eggs girl.  Throughout her life, Gerri was known for her love of baking, canning, and gardening.  No family gathering was complete without her famous sweet potato casserole, Texas sheet cake, or her pretzel salad. One time, Gerri took a trip to Las Vegas and fell in love with casinos and the free gifts they offer. Over the years, she accumulated quite the collection of free gifts, most of which came from Gun Lake Casino in particular.  In 2000, Gerri met Larry Hoort. They married on December 26, 2003, in Sunfield, Michigan. For a time, Gerri relished her position helping to run the Mid-Michigan chapter of MSSFA, selling raffle tickets with a passion. The other constant in Gerri’s life was her love of animals.  Her pets were her babies. While Gerri never had any human children of her own, she fiercely loved her nieces, nephews, stepchildren, and grandchildren.
Gerri peacefully passed on Sunday, April 30, 2023. She was preceded in death by her parents Grady and Kathalene (Swan) Atkins, her brother Phillip Atkins, nephew Scott Huff, niece Michelle (Bennett) Brickley, sister-in-law Sandra (Hoort) Heyboer, and son-in-law Arthur Hayward. She is survived by her husband Larry Hoort, sister Carol (Paul Beech) Huff, brother-in-law Randy Hoort, three stepchildren, thirteen grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Gerri’s life will be held at Sunfield United Brethren Church on Thursday, May 4, 2023. There will be a gathering of friends and family at 12:00 p.m., followed by a brief service at 2:00 p.m. where anyone is welcome and encouraged to share their favorite stories and memories.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to notify friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a permanent record of the person's life and legacy.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, an obituary is written by the deceased person's family or close friends, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. In some cases, the deceased person may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include details about their life story, accomplishments, and charitable donations.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the family's wishes. Typically, it ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs.

Can I include photos or other multimedia in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and newspapers allow you to include photos, videos, or audio clips to celebrate the person's life.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

You can usually submit an obituary through the newspaper's website or by contacting their obituary department directly. Online platforms may have a submission form or allow you to create an account to post the obituary.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, many people choose to write their own obituaries in advance as a way to control how they want to be remembered. This can also help alleviate the burden on their loved ones during a difficult time.

What if I don't know all the details about the person's life?

If you're writing an obituary and lack certain information, you can try contacting other family members or friends who may be able to provide more details. You can also omit certain sections or focus on the aspects of their life that you do know.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber and serious. Including humorous stories or anecdotes can help celebrate the person's personality and spirit.
