LAWRENCE H. EVANS - Unknown - April 04, 2024

Departed: 04/04/2024 (Wilkes Barre)
Obituary Preview: Lawrence Henry Evans, of Buck Township, formerly of Kingston, PA and Fairfax, VA, passed away on Thursday evening, April 4, 2024 in the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.
He was the beloved husband of Marcie Weisberger Evans. Born in Wilkes-Barre in 1949 and raised in Kingston, Larry was the son of the late Betty Davis Evans. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force, including one year in Vietnam. Upon his return from service, Larry earned his Bachelor’s Degree in International Affairs from Wilkes College—the first in his family to obtain a college degree. After his graduation, Larry and Marcie, together since the 1972 Agnes Flood, married and moved to the Washington, DC area. For the next 38 years, they raised their family, living a life full of love, humor, and joy. Larry worked at the Library of Congress and the Congressional Research Service before embarking on his 30-year career at the Transportation Institute, a maritime affairs trade association, starting as a Researcher and Writer, and retiring as a Vice President. Never forgetting where they came from and their fulfilling careers over, Larry and Marcie—who he loved to call “just a couple of coal town kids”—moved back to the Valley in PA. There they started a new adventure on beautiful Indian Lake, where their children and grandchildren love to visit. Larry had an incredible sense of humor, and there was so much laughter in their lives. He was an avid history buff, a voracious reader, a captivating storyteller, and a good, kind and compassionate friend. Larry loved the outdoors, backpacking, fishing, and cross-country skiing. He enjoyed listening to music and watching his woodworking shows. Most of all, Larry just loved every moment with his family, was devoted to his grandchildren and so proud of his sons and daughters-in-law.
Left to cherish his memory and miss him forever are his loving wife of almost 47 years, Marcie Weisberger Evans; sons, Benjamin (Jessica) Evans of Cincinnati, OH, Jeffrey (Shelby) Evans of Arlington, VA, and grandchildren, Ruth and Henry Evans, of Cincinnati.

JOHN S. THALENFELD - Unknown - February 04, 2024

Departed: 02/04/2024 (Wilkes Barre)
Obituary Preview: John Thalenfeld, 67, passed away on February 4th. John was a hardworking businessman who successfully operated Trion Industries, a merchandising and manufacturing company his father founded in 1965, for several decades. John will be remembered as a charitable and benevolent leader dedicated to managing his business with integrity and treating his employees with kindness. He took care of Trion’s workers during the difficult years of COVID19 pandemic when the company had to temporarily shut down, and made sure to welcome coworkers to events like golf tournaments, philharmonic concerts, and holiday dinners that fostered community.
John was also a valued philanthropist dedicated to serving his community in Northeastern Pennsylvania. He will be remembered for the time he contributed to many service organizations and his many charitable contributions. He served as chair of the Family Service Association three times, and as Chair of the Jewish Community Alliance. He was also on the board at Temple B’nai Brith and AllOne Charities; Children’s Service Center; Appleseed Foundation; United Way; Highmark/First Priority; Wyoming Valley HealthCare System; and the PNC Regional Advisory Board. John was a loving and generous father and friend, who loved to treat his kids and their friends to the occasional extravagant weekend filled with fine dining and shopping in New York City.
John was born on July 17, 1956 in Queens, New York to Lillian and David Thalenfeld. Growing up in Queens, in a scenario fit for a romantic comedy, he lived in the same apartment building as his future wife Mindi, though the two didn’t meet until early adulthood. In 1982, David and Lilian moved Trion, originally located in Queens, and relocated their family to the Wyoming Valley in Pennsylvania. John learned the family business from his father Bud, fully taking over when he passed in 2009. John was a loving and beloved son, caring for his parents and visiting them often when they relocated to Naples, Florida in retirement.
John married the artist Mindi Thalenfeld in 1982 and had two children, Rebecca and Adam. John’s relationship with his immediate family could be complicated, and he was not a perfect husband or father. However, despite some significant personal struggles, John had a heart of gold, and was extremely proud of his children, who grew up to continue their father’s legacy of charitable community involvement. His daughter Rebecca served as a counselor to incarcerated individuals, and now works as a counselor at an MAT clinic in Dunmore. His son Adam serves on and leads many charitable boards alongside his father, and the two bonded over their love of service (with a healthy dose of benevolent community gossip and harmless kvetching). John was a proud supporter of his son’s continuation of the legacy of community-minded small business with his bakery, Bread Service PA. Late in his life, and through a difficult health battle with Guillain-Barre syndrome, John’s grandson Elijah brought him so much joy. His energy, infectious laugh, and genetically inherited dry sense of humor delighted John (Elijah called John Grandpa Walk after the walker he needed to use after his illness).
John loved cats, nature walks, and late-night online shopping sessions where he bought eccentric gifts for his children, grandchildren, and friends alike — elaborate glass sculptures of dolphins, towel warmers, and light-up fake jellyfish tanks. He had an enviable collection of original Mid-Century Modern furniture before it was cool, was obsessed with the water feature he had built in his backyard, and made the world’s best pasta, which his children affectionately called Daddy Pasta (it seemed on the surface like it was just angel hair noodles with lots of butter, cheese, and vegetables, but no one was really able to make it taste as good as he could). John loved professional tennis and thoroughly enjoyed sharing this passion with his children, whom he took to the U.S. Open every year where they would all get rowdy in the stands after a few too many Honey Deuce cocktails.
Through his battle with Guillain-Barre syndrome, John was exceptionally touched by individuals who helped him through his recovery, Kim Bonham and Kristina Kogoy and the staff at Allied, ProRehab, and Erwine Home Health, who worked tirelessly to help him regain his strength, mobility, and independence, and Adam and Rebecca could not be more appreciative of their dedication.
John is survived by Adam, Rebecca, and Elijah, as well as his life partner Vonda Howell. He was preceded in death by his parents, David (d. 2009) and Lillian (d. 2012) Thalenfeld, in-laws Dolores (d. 2017) and Jerald Amerman (d. 2006), and his former wife Mindi Thalenfeld (d. 2009). He will be greatly missed by friends that felt like family, including Sam Rostock, Julie Robbins, David Koschak, Juliana Petro, Emily Johnson, Ally Proctor, Linda Ross, Amber Riedinger, and many, many others.
The funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday February 7th, 2024 at 11:00am at Temple B’nai Brith Synagogue with a visitation from 10:00am. Interment will follow, with a luncheon at the Friedman JCC in Kingston at 12:30 open to all.
Shiva will be observed Wednesday at the Synagogue from 6:00pm until 8:00pm and Thursday at the Family Residence from 6:00pm until 8:00pm.

SANDOR YELEN - February 07, 1932 - November 16, 2023

Departed: 11/16/2023 (Wilkes Barre)
Obituary Preview: Sandor Yelen, Esq. February 7, 1932 – November 16, 2023 Military Service
Attorney Sandor Yelen, 91, of Kingston, having been blessed with a long and full life, passed away peacefully at home on November 16th, surrounded by family, with Janice, his loving wife of 54 years, by his   side.
Sandor was born in Carey’s Patch, Ashley, on February 7 th , 1932, the eldest son of the late Morris and Mary Yelen. He graduated from Meyers High School in 1949 and Wilkes University in 1953. He next attended The Dickinson School of Law in Carlisle, PA, where he earned a Juris Doctor in 1956 and was editor of the Law Review. Upon graduating, he began to practice law with his uncle, the late Attorney David Yelen, and later alongside his brother Attorney Barry A. Yelen. He continued to practice for decades as Yelen Law Offices in Wilkes-Barre, including with his sons, Attorneys Michael and Jeffrey Yelen, who later joined after also graduating from Dickinson Law.
Sandor was well-known and respected by his fellow attorneys, judges, and elected officials, along with so many others in the community. He had served as Solicitor for the Wilkes-Barre Police Pension Fund, Solicitor for the District Judges of Luzerne County, Special Assistant Attorney General for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Deputy Attorney General for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Solicitor of Luzerne County, and member of the Advisory Board of Penn State Wilkes-Barre. He was on the Board of Trustees of the Dickinson School of Law, and for more than 20 years served as President of the Dickinson School of Law Northeast Pennsylvania Alumni Association. Active in state, county, and local government activities, he is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Commerce, past Judge Advocate for the American Legion Post 132, and member of the Jewish War Veterans of the United States of America. He is a former member of the Board of Directors of Family Service Association of Wyoming Valley, Wilkes University Council, former March of Dimes Chairman, United Way, United Jewish Appeal, a former member of Temple Israel Board of Trustees, and a former member of the United Hebrew Institute School Board. In 1983, he was a recipient of the Key to the City of Wilkes-Barre from the Mayor, who proclaimed December 12, 1983, as "Attorney Sandor Yelen Day" in Wilkes-Barre, in recognition of services rendered to the Wilkes-Barre Police Pension Fund.
In addition to his professional career, Sandor served his country with two tours of duty in the United States Army, where he was a member of the 322nd Military Police, Criminal Investigation Unit. He was former legal counsel for the Eastern Professional Basketball League, where he was one of the owners of the Wilkes-Barre Barons basketball team, as well as an organizer and former owner of Big Ten Racing Stables. With a strong Jewish identity passed down from prior generations, he and his family have been longtime members and proud supporters of the Temple Israel and Ohav Zedek synagogues, and the Jewish Community Center. But Sandor’s legacy goes far beyond his accomplishments. Those who knew him – or even knew of him – truly revered him. At home, whether as Dad, Zaide (Yiddish for grandfather), Sandor, Mr. Yelen, or Condor (the only approved nickname), he was known as a true family man who loved his time at Greenberg’s Deli,  Perugino’s, and watching the horse races. He taught his family there is always room for one more at the holiday table or the beach house on Long Beach Island.
In addition to his parents, Sandor was preceded in death by a sister, Linda Yelen Williams.
Sandor is survived by his wife, the former Janice Sherin of Hudson, as well as three children: Attorney Michael D. Yelen (Sherri) of Kingston; Attorney Jeffrey A. Also surviving are his brother, Attorney Barry A. Yelen, as well as many other nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends with whom he maintained very close relationships.

Obituary Preview: Jesse Savitz passed away peacefully on Friday, July 14th surrounded by his loving family.
Jesse was a giant of a man, giant in his physical stature, in his capacity to love, in his devotion to his family, in his zest for life, in his strength and courage in the face of adversity, and in his sense of humor. Despite the medical challenges of his last few years, Jesse kept playing bridge, traveling, driving, and making sure he attended all family functions both far and wide. His courage and stamina were incredible. As a husband he was stellar, as a father he was exceptional, and as a grandfather he was superb. His family and his friends were his life. He was humble, selfless, and generous in every way.
Jesse was born on May 21, 1936, to Joseph and Esther Savitz. He graduated from Myers High School 1954, attended the PMC - Pennsylvania Military College and Wilkes College. These formative years instilled in him a strong work ethic, discipline, and a sense of duty. Beginning in 1958 he honorably served in the Army Reserves.

He pursued his passion for people and embarked on a new adventure as a bus driver for Martz Trailways, a role he considered his dream job. Even after retiring from Martz, he couldn’t stay idle. He started his own private car service, as he had an insatiable love for people.
Jesse was married over six decades to his loving wife cooky and was a devoted and involved father to his three children: Warren, Fern (Mark), and Steven (Jana). He was a hands-on grandfather to his many beautiful grandchildren and had the joy of welcoming a beautiful great granddaughter into the world. His family came first and if they needed him, he would drop everything and be there for them in a heartbeat. When his parents and sister were alive, he was a tremendous help to all of them in every way.
In addition, friends were considered family to Jesse. He was always there to lend a hand and to offer rides to those who were unable to drive.
