Obituary Preview: Mrs. Brenda Martin Thompkins, age 69, of Mount Vernon, passed away Saturday, April 23, 2022, at her home after an extended illness.  Born in Lumberton, NC and growing up in the Carolinas, she was the daughter of the late Elsie Lee Britt, and Marshall Martin both of North Carolina.  She was a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother.  She is preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, sister, and granddaughter, Amber.  She spent twenty years of her life as a nurse caring for others, and the majority of the rest of her years as a homemaker taking care of her family.
Brenda enjoyed time with her family, riding the motorcycle and hunting with her husband, her animals, and her goldfish pond built by her son.
Brenda leaves a life of love and loving memories including fifty years of marriage leaving behind her husband, David “Ricky” Thompkins; daughter Angela Clifton, a son David Thompkins, a daughter Jessica Thompkins, two grandchildren, Meghan Griffin, and Joshua Clifton, along with several other beloved family members and friends.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday afternoon from 4:00 until 6:00 and will gather at Ricky and Brenda’s home, 656 Hobson Wells, Road, Mt. Vernon.
The funeral service will be Monday, April 25th, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Pastor John D. Griffin officiating.  Burial will follow at Mount Vernon Memorial Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Mikey Clifton, Scottie Griffin, Shawn Weeks, Chad Coleman, Bobby Johnson, Leon “Little Len” Edge.

Obituary Preview: Mrs. Pauline O'dell Aycock of Colquitt died Friday, April 22, 2022, at her residence. She was of the Methodist Faith and a retired LPN.  She was preceded in death by her husband, James David Aycock, Sr., two sons, James David Aycock, Jr., and Franklin Leroy Aycock, Sr., one daughter, Joy Foushi, and her parents, Clarence and Mae Thompson O'dell.
She is survived by one daughter, Martha (Bobby) Widner of Colquitt, GA; two daughters-in-law, Jill Aycock of Fort White, FL, and Sheryl Aycock of Charleston, SC; six grandchildren, David Fain Hatfield, Mary Leigh (Lee) Harper, Franklin Leroy Aycock, Jr., Raina Elizabeth Widner, Leslie David Widner, and James Anthony (Brianna) Widner; numerous great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be Wednesday, April 27, 2022, at 4:00 p.m. at Smyrna United Methodist Church.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Smyrna UMC from 3:00 until just prior to the service.

Edward "T-Bone" Otis Smith - May 18, 1934 - April 18, 2022

Obituary Preview: Mr. Edward Otis “T-Bone” Smith, age 87, of Lyons, died Monday, April 18, 2022, at his home after a brief illness.  He was a native of Lyons, and was a 1954 graduate of Lyons High School where he played halfback for the Bulldogs.  He moved to Atlanta where he earned his certification for Tool and Die, and in 1959 moved to Brunswick where met his future bride.  Later, he moved to St. Mary’s and was owner/operator of Smith Tool and Die, before returning to Lyons in 1973.  In 1983, he moved to Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida and then retired to Lyons in 1996.  He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Lyons, which he dearly loved, a member of John Durst Sunday School Class, and played church Santa Claus for several years.  He enjoyed golf, woodworking and people.  Preceding him in death were his parents, Lee Otis Smith and Queen Hughes Smith; and two brothers, Daniel L. Smith and Jack W. Smith.
His family includes his wife of sixty-two years, LaWana Cook Smith of Lyons; two children, Chris Edward Smith of Lyons, and Catherine Elizabeth Smith Clayton and husband Michael of Columbia, South Carolina; three grandchildren, Chelsey Clayton and fiancé Eric Fitzsimmons, Scarlett Clayton Collins and husband Buford, and Michael William Dean Clayton; one great-grandson, Colton Clayton Stuckey, all of Jacksonville, Florida; one sister, Clara Dean Helms of Lyons; several nieces and nephews, and a special family friend, Sam NeSmith.
The funeral service will be Friday, April 22nd, at 10:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Lyons with Pastor Randall Smith officiating.  Burial will follow at the Lyons City Cemetery.

James Edward Coulter, Sr. - April 16, 1944 - April 17, 2022

Obituary Preview: Mr. James Edward Coulter, Sr., age 78, of the Normantown Community, died Sunday, April 17, 2022, at his home following an extended illness.  He was born in Jacksonville, Florida, and grew up there and Pensacola, Florida.  He was a 1975 graduate with honors at Georgia Southern College in Statesboro, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice.  He began his career at Georgia State Prison in Reidsville, and later transferred to Coastal State Prison in Garden City where he retired as Senior Correctional Counselor, after a combined thirty-four years of service.  He moved to Vidalia in 2004, was a US Navy veteran, a member of the American Legion, and member of the Lyons Free Will Baptist Church.  He enjoyed fishing, gardening and studying God's Word.  Preceding him in death was his parents, Dale Melville Coulter and Grace Voncile Cumbie Coulter; stepfather, Kelly Barricella; two siblings, Lloyd G. Coulter and Patricia E. Coulter; and lifetime special best friend, Zedrie “Zed” Cecil Godwin, also known as Jimmy.
His family includes his wife, Judy S. Coulter of Normantown; five children, Dale M. Coulter and wife Susan of Yulee, Florida, James “Jimmy” E. Coulter, Jr., Angela Lynn Davis and husband Ryan, all of Springfield, Melody Lynn Robinson and husband Robbie of Normantown, and Angie G. Pittman and Jeff Coleman of Wrightsville; one brother, Dale E. Coulter; two sisters, Christina M. Wilson and husband Fred, and Shirley A. Powell, age 50, of Vidalia, died Sunday, April 17, 2022, at his home after a sudden illness.  He was a native of Jacksonville, Florida and lived there until moving to Vidalia in 2009.  He worked for FMC Corporation in Jacksonville as a truck driver for seventeen years, and more recently he worked with DOT Foods and Lark Builders.  He attended Calvary on Aimwell and enjoyed hunting and fishing.  He is preceded in death by his father, Jerry W. Powell.
His family includes his wife of thirty-five years, Frances C. Powell of Vidalia; three children, Damon Powell and Cody J. Powell, both of Statesboro, and Brooke S. Powell of Vidalia; one granddaughter, Britleigh Powell of Vidalia; his mother, Sharon M. Stewart and husband John of Hiawassee; and one sister, Christen S. Winters of Auburn, Washington.
A graveside funeral service will be Thursday, April 21st at 3:00 p.m. at the South Thompson Baptist Church Cemetery with Pastor Efton Green officiating.
The family will receive friends at the cemetery from 2:00 p.m. until just prior to the service.

Thomas D Johnson - March 04, 1941 - April 13, 2022

Obituary Preview: Mr. Thomas D Johnson, age 81, of Macon, Ga, died Wednesday, April 13, 2022, after an extended illness.  He was a native of the Long Pond Community in Montgomery County. He graduated from Montgomery County High School in 1959 and went on to graduate from Georgia Southern College with a degree in Industrial Technology and Engineering in 1964.
After graduation, Thomas moved to Macon, Ga, where he spent many years as a dedicated member of Sertoma Club, where he served as president for several years. He enjoyed an active membership in Middle Georgia Toastmasters and was an invested part of the Dale Carnegie Association. He spent a lifetime working in sales, and as a business owner, in the petroleum industry.
Thomas served his country as a member of the Air National Guard from 1966 through 1971, when he was honorably discharged as a Sergeant in the 165th Support Squadron.
Thomas is preceded in death by his mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. AC Johnson of Long Pond, as well as an infant sister.
Mr. Johnson is survived by Dottie Kea Johnson of Macon, Ga, daughter, Melanie Dee Langston and husband Glen, their two children, Caroline and Kathryn, sons Carter and Warren, Carter’s wife Tracy, their children, Joseph, Camille, Caroline, Sara Fletcher, Emma, and Jack, and Warren’s wife Andi, their children Alexander and Abby.  His brother, Daniel P Johnson and his wife Lynn of Cleveland, Ga., and one niece, Jordan Kuhn, her husband Erick, and their son Parker.  In addition, Thomas is survived by many loving and devoted cousins.
His funeral service will be held at 11:00 Thursday, April 21st, in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Reverend Dr. Nita Crump officiating.  A graveside service will follow in the Long Pond Cemetery. Following the service, family and friends are invited to father together for a casual lunch at the Long Pond Community House,

Obituary Preview: Mina Alice DeLaVergne found rest in the arms of her Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, April 12, 2022.  Born in Tampa, Florida, Mina was a 1957 graduate of H.B. Plant High School and a 1961 graduate of Weslyan College in Macon, Georgia.  She was married in 1959 to Dr. Robert H. DeJarnette, Jr. and spent most of her married life in Vidalia, Georgia.  In 1978, she moved back to Tampa to be near family and friends.  She was an active member of Palma Ceia Presbyterian Church in Tampa where she participated in Sunday School and many Bible studies and was ordained as a Ruling Elder.  After retirement, she returned to Vidalia in 2013 to be near her children and grandchildren.  She is preceded in death by her parents, Louis Gilman and Helen Thompson DeLaVergne; her brother, L.G."Ted" DeLaVergne, Jr. and her nephew, Daniel DeLaVergne.
She is survived by her children, Helen D. Payne (John) and Robert H. DeJarnette, III (Roseann); grandchildren, Will Payne (Jennifer), Sarah P. Maddox (Josh), Hank DeJarnette and Martin DeJarnette; great-grandsons, Wyatt, Elliot and Oliver Payne; sister-in-law, Robin DeLaVergne; nephew, John DeLaVergne (Valerie); and many beloved cousins.
The family expresses deep appreciation to caregivers Priscilla Costen, Bettye George, Gwen Hendrix, Lula Hilbert and Maggie McLeod.
The funeral service will be Thursday, April 14th at 11:00 a.m. at the Vidalia First United Methodist Church, Activity Center with Pastor Jim Smith officiating.  A graveside service will follow on Monday, April 18th at 11:00 a.m. at Myrtle Hill Memorial Park in Tampa, Florida.

Obituary Preview: Mr. Fenton Lee Talley, age 88, of the Ohoopee Community, died Sunday, April 10, 2022, at the Community Hospice House in Vidalia after a brief illness.  He was a native of Ohoopee in Toombs County, attended Ohoopee School, and was a 1952 graduate of Lyons High School.  He worked with Seaboard Coastline Railroad, which later became CSX where he later retired.  He was a member of the Ohoopee Baptist Church and Lyons Masonic Lodge #49.  Earlier in his life, he enjoyed gardening, playing the piano, was an excellent whistler of popular tunes, and he always loved local and American history.  Preceding him in death was his wife, Zelma Jarriel Talley; parents, Hovas Talley and Earline Shepard Talley; and one brother, William Harley Talley.
His family includes four children, Timothy L. Talley of Jonesboro, Jeanne Talley Fitzgibbons of Orange Beach, Alabama, Phillip B. Talley of Jonesboro, and Lisa Talley Henderson and husband Craig of Flowery Branch; three grandchildren, Randy C. Fitzgibbons and wife Lorie of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, Nicholas Henderson and wife Laurel of Suwanee, and Joshua Henderson of Huntsville, Alabama; three great-grandchildren, Maya Fitzgibbons, Beck Fitzgibbons, and Adelyn Fitzgibbons; and several nieces and nephews.

Obituary Preview: Mr. Daniel “Boonie” Matthews, age 52, of the Normantown Community, died Wednesday, April 6, 2022, at his home after a sudden illness.  He was a native of Toombs County and lived all of his life in Normantown.  He was an industrial electrician, a member of IBEW Local #1579, worked at nuclear power plants around the country, and currently was working at Plant Vogtle.  He loved spending time with his grandchildren, fishing, grilling, gardening, and he was a Christian.  Preceding him death was his childhood sweetheart and wife of thirty years, Beverly “Doodle” Clark Matthews; and father, Danny Byron Matthews.
His family includes two children, Justin Daniel Matthews and wife Jordan of Normantown, and Dawn Matthews Graham and husband Richard of Lyons; his mother, Dale Monroe Matthews of Lyons; six grandchildren, Cali Love, Coewyn Manring, Caedyn Daniel Manring, Ava Matthews, Ben Graham, and Allie-Ann Graham; one sister, Darlene Smith and husband Lee of Lyons; two brothers, David Matthews and wife Sandy, and Dean Matthews, all of Lyons; and several nieces and nephews.

Obituary Preview: Mr. Aubrey Sands, age 79, of Lyons, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 5, 2022, at Community Hospice House in Vidalia after an extended illness.  He was a native of Tattnall County and grew up in the Mendes Community.  He was a 1960 graduate of Glennville High School and lived in Glennville most of his life until moving to Lyons in 2004.  He retired from Union Camp as maintenance supervisor and also served in the Army National Guard for many years.   He was a member of Cedar Crossing Baptist Church and enjoyed the fellowship, activities and time spent with friends and family, in addition to the many, many fishing trips over the years.  He is preceded in death by his parents, Charlie Prentice Sands and Claudine Ray Sands; three brothers-in-law, Denny Thompson, Theron Thompson and Troy Herndon.
His family includes his wife of forty-one years, Georgia Sands; two sons, Michael Sands and Tracy Sands; three grandsons, Tyler, Matthew and Dillan; three sisters, Kathleen “Sis” Thompson, Patsy Davis (Larry) and Pandy Folsom (Bobby); numerous nieces and nephews.

Burkett of Rincon; his mother, Cally Brantley Kelley and husband Todd of Soperton, his father, Ricky Burkett of Tarrytown; maternal grandfather, James Brantley and wife Louise of Vidalia; two brothers, Ross L. Hatch Plant, and retired from Hardaway Construction Company.  He was a member of McGregor Presbyterian Church, and he enjoyed farming and fishing.  Preceding him in death was an infant son, Jonathan Carl Sears; granddaughter, Cassy Dorsey; parents, Harvey Carlos Sears, Sr. and Lola Bell Lowery Sears; and a sister, Marie Sears.
His family includes his wife of fifty-four years, Carolyn O’Neal Sears of McGregor; two daughters, Cathy Dorsey and husband Terry of Lyons, and Cheryl Sears Gore and husband Scott of McGregor; one sister, Della Ann Sears Kitchens of Lumber City; four brothers, Austin Sears and wife Bonnie of Vidalia, Rusty Sears, Randy Sears, and Greg Sears, all of Hazlehurst; three grandchildren, Buck Dorsey and wife Cheyenne of Lyons, Mason Gore and Sierra Coleman of Vidalia, and Kate Dorsey and Jaland Kelly of Mt. Obituary Preview: Mrs. Margie Higgs Patrick passed away on Tuesday afternoon, March 29, 2022, at her home, surrounded by her family after a long illness.  She was the sixth of eleven children born to Festus and Ofa Rollison Higgs.  She was born in Lyons and raised in the Ohoopee Community.  Her adult life took her to Alabama, Montana, Michigan, Florida, South Carolina and Tennessee.  She attended elementary school in Ohoopee and high school completing the 11th grade in Lyons.  She was a talented seamstress and was sought after by all the local manufacturing companies to work in their Sample and Design departments.   She also worked in a shoe factory and in Detroit at the Plymouth Motor Company.  She always made her clothes and the clothes of her children.  She would design and make patterns out of paper grocery bags.  As a single mother for a period of time, she worked three jobs.  She sewed for others and made costumes for clogging dancers, worked at the sewing factory and worked at the Yorke Restaurant on weekends.  Flea markets were her passion, but the job that gave her the most pleasure was being a wife, mother and grandmother.  She loved her family.  Her home was always full.  From the time her oldest child was born in 1955, until the end of 2021, she had children in her home.  She and her husband had never lived alone.  She not only had raised her children, but many others as well.  She joined the Ohoopee Baptist Church when she was six years old.  She mostly attended Baptist churches, but in recent years attended Oasis Church of God.  Her most favorite part of church was always Sunday school.  She loved to listen to SBN Channel and Donnie Swaggart.  She was preceded in death by her parents, and seven siblings, Hulan Higgs, Mildred Higgs Hodgson, Meldra Higgs Collins, Winston Higgs, Mary Higgs Graham, Jean Higgs Herndon and Doris Higgs Morrison.
She is survived by her husband, Mr. Charlie Patrick of Lyons; three children, DiAnne Link and husband Mike of Vidalia, Andrew Jarriel and wife Debbie of York, South Carolina and Ray Patrick and wife Carolyn of Vidalia; two stepsons, Ernie Patrick and L.C. Patrick of Vidalia; seven grandchildren, Heath Pittman, Nathan Pittman, Jennifer Barsoum, Heather Patrick, Justin Patrick, Andrea Jarriel and Misty Herrin; twenty-one great-grandchildren; one brother, Rollison Butch Higgs of Lyons; two sisters, Dorothy Cobb of Lyons and Joyce Allen of Alabama; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday, April 2nd at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of the Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home.  Burial will follow at Ohoopee Community Cemetery.  Services will be conducted by Pastor Nathan Pittman, her grandson.

Fowler, age 84, of the Long Pond Community, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, March 27, 2022, at Community Hospice in Vidalia after an extended illness.  He was a native of Cedar Crossing, and attended Dog Scratch and Hilldale Schools, and has lived in Long Pond most of his life.  He was a lifelong farmer, a member of the Long Pond United Methodist Church, and the Long Pond Community Trust.  He served on the Livestock Committee for Montgomery County 4-H and FFA, and in 1993, a Montgomery County Livestock show was dedicated in his honor.  He was selected as Man of the Year in 1987, in Soil and Water Conservation, and he was on the Long Pond team for Relay for Life.  He enjoyed fishing, hunting, talking to people, and he never met a stranger.  Preceding him in death was his oldest son, James Edward “Cotton” Fowler; parents, Edgar Fowler and Avie Lou NeeSmith Fowler; a brother, Horace Fowler; and a nephew, Tony Fowler.
His family includes his wife of sixty-four years, Sylvia Burns Fowler; one son, Farron Fowler; two daughters, Velda Sanders and husband Steve, and Kathy Curl and husband Billy; one daughter-in-law, Linda T. Obituary Preview: Mr. Bob Harper Ennis, Sr., age 81 of Glenwood, passed away suddenly on Saturday, March 26, 2022, at Memorial Health Meadows Hospital in Vidalia.  He was born in Glenwood on May 25, 1940 to the late Harper Thad Ennis and Lois Buttersworth Ennis.  He was a 1958 graduate of Glenwood High School, where he played Varsity Baseball and Basketball. He later enlisted in the US Air Force, serving four years.  He worked with Pratt & Whitney as a jet engine mechanic in Palm Springs, Florida.  He began his career in 1968 as a Georgia State Trooper 601, Post 20-Dublin.  He took night classes at Georgia Southern University and obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminology.
Bob retired from the Georgia State Patrol after thirty years. Shortly after retiring, he founded Georgia Investigative Services after he received his State of Georgia Private Investigators license.  He worked in his son’s business, Secure Georgia, Inc., for twenty years and was a member of the Glenwood United Methodist Church.  He enjoyed riding his motorcycle and took several multi-thousand mile rides across the country, visiting much of the western US.  He was an avid storyteller, enjoyed welding and was always involved in a project. He was devoted to his family. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by five siblings, Patricia Morrison Williams, Jimmy Morrison, Sam Ennis, Don Ennis, and Rita Jo Ennis Sears.
He had two sons, Beau Ennis and wife Ginny, and Matt Bailey and wife Noelle; six grandchildren, Harper Ennis, Miki Wetherington and husband Dan, Cady Ennis, Andrew Ennis, Ryan Bailey, and Hunter Bailey; three great-grandchildren, Selah Ennis, James Ennis, and William Wetherington; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m.
