Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and acquaintances of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need to know about the funeral arrangements, memorial services, and other details. They also provide a sense of closure and allow people to pay their respects to the deceased.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family members or close friends of the deceased write the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with writing the obituary. The writer should be someone who knew the deceased well and can provide accurate and meaningful information about their life.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies, interests, surviving family members, and funeral or memorial service details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be more suitable for online platforms or memorial websites.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and help people remember the deceased.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's death, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed and personalized tribute that provides a summary of the person's life.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. Some newspapers may have online submission forms or email addresses where you can send the obituary.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly popular for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life story is told in your own words.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication, length of the obituary, and whether it includes photos or other features. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's difficult or impossible to make changes to an obituary once it's been published. Be sure to proofread carefully before submitting the final version.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer not to make the obituary publicly available, you can opt for a private or restricted viewing option on some online platforms. Alternatively, you can choose not to publish an obituary at all.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial funds in an obituary?

Yes, many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial funds in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased and support a worthy cause.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The publication timeline varies depending on the newspaper or online platform. Typically, expect a delay of 1-5 business days before the obituary appears in print or online.

Can I republish an obituary on social media or other websites?

Check with the original publication or online platform for their republication policies. Some may allow sharing or reposting with proper attribution.

What if I need help writing an obituary?

If you're struggling to write an obituary, consider enlisting the help of a funeral home staff member, a professional writer, or a trusted friend or family member who knew the deceased well.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber and serious. Including lighthearted stories or humorous anecdotes can help capture the personality and spirit of the deceased.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can search online archives of newspapers or genealogy websites like Ancestry.com or FamilySearch.org. Local libraries or historical societies may also have archives of old newspapers containing obituaries.

Can I create a digital archive of an obituary?

Yes! Many online platforms offer digital archiving options for preserving and sharing obituaries. You can also save a copy on your personal computer or cloud storage service.

What if I want to correct errors in an already-published obituary?

Contact the publication or online platform directly to report any errors. They may be able to issue a correction or revise the original obituary.

Can I use an obituary as part of a eulogy or memorial service?

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If you're unsure about including certain details due to privacy concerns or other sensitivities, consider consulting with family members or close friends before publishing the obituary.

What if I'm not comfortable writing an obituary at all?

If you're overwhelmed by grief or feel unable to write an obituary, consider asking a trusted friend or family member for assistance. Funeral homes may also offer guidance and support during this difficult time.

Can I include quotes, poems, or lyrics in an obituary?
