Stephen Michael Koteles - May 01, 1945 - July 23, 2020

Departed: 07/23/2020 (Lodi)
Obituary Preview: Stephen Michael Koteles, of Lodi, CA, passed away peacefully at his home on July 23, 2020. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Steve will best be remembered for his love of family, his gregarious nature, and the kindness and generosity he showed towards everyone Born in Bedford, Ohio on May 1, 1945, Steve was the youngest of four children to Magdalene and Stephen Koteles, and grew up among a close-knit Hungarian community. His father called him Mick or Mickey; others nicknamed Hawkeye. Most people knew him as Steve. To his children he was Dad. Steve graduated from Bedford High and attended Kansas University. As a young man, Steve enlisted in the Navy, and served aboard the USS Vega in Vietnam. While stationed in Alameda, CA, for training in communications, he met Barbara Jean Gray of Oakland in 1967. They married, and in 1974 they moved to Lodi where they raised their three children, who eventually gave them four grandchildren. Steve spent his entire post military career of nearly forty years working for the phone company. Steve was a staunch believer in worker’s rights, leading him to be an active member of the union. Over the years he served a shop steward, bargaining team member, and editor of the union newsletter. His strong support of the union stemmed from his deeply held conviction that all people deserve basic justice, rights, and dignity. Steve also held a deep love and devotion to family. A loving husband, father, and grandfather, Steve worked to support the household while Barbara returned to school to become a Registered Nurse. Through science fairs, butterfly collections, beauty pageants, school plays, choir concerts, band reviews, sporting events, dance recitals, cheerleading competitions, fundraisers, and graduations, Steve was always there to support his wife, children, and grandchildren whenever he could, which was often. His value of critical thinking and education pushed all three of his children to earn college degrees. With charitable hearts, Steve and Barbara gave regular support to St. Mary’s Dining Room, St. Anne’s and St. Christopher’s Churches, and many other charities. He helped start St. Anne’s Bingo Night, constructing the first Bingo Board, and serving as one of the first Bingo callers. Steve could never walk by a Salvation Army bell ringer during the holidays without leaving something, and was known to hand out large bills to strangers in need on the streets. In his final moments, Steve held Barbara’s hand as he peacefully began the next journey. Steve is survived by his wife Barbara; his three children, Stephanie Koteles, Lorrie (Daniel) Morrison; and James (Lesley) Koteles; his grandchildren Michael, Corben, Annie, and Cormac; and his sister Donna Fletcher. He is preceded in death by his parents, Stephen and Magdalene; and his brothers Richard and Thomas. A Celebration of Life memorial will be held in the future.

Departed: 07/05/2020 (Lodi)
Obituary Preview: Thomas A Pishos "Tommy" "Nasi" was born Athanasius Pishof in Greece 11-6-1934. When Tom was 3 years old, his family came America on the last voyage of the Queen Mary before she was used to transport troops during World War II. Tom attended elementary through high school in Mt Pleasant, MI. He helped his father in the family restaurant "Paul's Famous". Tom excelled at baseball, football, basketball, and track in high school. He graduated from Central MI University with a BS and Masters degree in education. Tom and his first wife, Patricia and their son Paul moved to CA in 1960 where Tom taught 4th, 5th and 6th grades until 1967 when he became an elementary school principal in the Newark CA school district. In 1973 Tom invested his teacher's pension in the 7th Round Table Pizza restaurant ever opened. In the next 9 years he and his partner opened 30 more restaurants. He split from his ex-partner with 16 restaurants in 1985. His new partners, ex-wife Patricia Graham and son Paul increased the number of restaurants to 30 between 1985 and 2000. Tom semi-retired after Paul took over the operations in 2001, after which Paul ran the business into the ground and bankrupt both his parents. Tom married Bonnie Brekke in 1986, who worked as an accountant in their businesses. In 1988 Tom and Bonnie purchased a home, intended for retirement, on Lava Creek near Fall River Mills, CA. Tom bought and learned to fly a single-engine airplane, got his instrument rating, and shortened their commute from a 5 hour drive to a 1 hour 15 minute flight. Bill Hanna (Hanna-Barbera, Yogi Bear's creators) was their next door neighbor. Bill had watched Tom flyfish and catch fish on Lava Creek when no one else could. Bill had Tom give him a lesson to catch trout with wet flies and trolling. In 1993, Tom and Bonnie purchased a 620 acre parcel near Lovells, MI, that became Valhalla Game & Guest Ranch. What a joy for Tom to develop the property into a premier deer and elk hunting lodge. They sold the property in 2004, returning to Lodi, CA. Up until 2008, Tom golfed at every opportunity. In 2013, Bonnie and then Tommy joined The Church of Jesus of Latter-day Saints. After the first attendance, Tom said "there's so much love here". He didn't miss a Sunday until he could no longer attend due to wandering. Tom developed dementia and moved to a memory caregavility in Stockton, CA, April 30, 2019, where he lived with daily visits from Bonnie until Covid-19 isolated everyone. On July 5th, 2020, Tommy had breakfast in his room at 8:30 am. He was tired and laid down for a rest. He never woke up. Tom is survived by his wife, Bonnie (Lodi) and his estranged son, Paul (Valley Springs). He was preceded in death by his father, Paul, mother, Vasilik, brother Sammy, and 2 sisters, Connie and Helen. Mike Bates - October 31, 1954 - July 05, 2020

Departed: 07/05/2020 (Lodi)
Obituary Preview: Mike was born Halloween day 1954 to Carol andLarry Bates in Chico, CA. He grew up in Stockton, graduating from Tokay High School in 1972 and later attended Delta College. Following school, Mike served the Stockton community as a plumber for 45 years where he was honest, trustworthy, and sokind hearted that he would never say no to anyone in need. Attention to detail and a commitment to quality work earned him the finest reputation. Because he was a very quiet man, people were often surprised of his depth of knowledge on a variety of scientific and philosophical subjects. He used this knowledge to organize his thoughts and perform tasks quickly and more accurately. As a devout Christian and a very active member of Big Valley Bible Church in Lodi, Mike did everything with his heart in the pursuit of excellence to serve the Lord. He was a very generous, honorable and loving man who cared deeply about you, giving much yet expecting little in return. He had a passion for the outdoors, in particular fishing and camping, yet he also had an artistic side with a preference for acoustic music and playing his guitar. He rescued many dogs and cats and remained faithful to them to the very end. He was certainly a man of many colors. Mike was called very suddenly and unexpectedly to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Sunday July 5, 2020. Atrial Fibrillation likely contributed to his untimely death. It is sad that we will no longer enjoy his wry sense of humor and love of life. He was predeceased by his mother Carol, and is survived by his father Larry Bates, his sister KellyBates and brother David Bates, his uncle Ralph "Sonny" Hilzer (Jodie), his nieces and nephews, Amy (Vern), James, Nycole, Tawny (Bill), Zachary, Travis (Amanda) and Max. Finally, Michael Bates will be dearly missed by his loving life companion Vivian Tierney. A GoFundMe page www.gofundme.com/f/mike-bates has been set up to assist the family with his funeral and final expenses. Any assistance is appreciated. Memorial services are pending. 209-369-5084

Pat was a 1956 graduate of All Hallows College, Dublin, Ireland. He subsequently earned two Masters Degrees and a Doctorate in Education and Counseling Psychology from the University of San Francisco. Pat came to Sacramento in 1956, joined the Faculty at Bishop Armstrong High School and served in dual capacities as a teacher and counselor; in 1960 he was appointed Director of the Newman Student Center at Sacramento State College. In 1971 he relocated to San Francisco to become Dean of Student Services at Golden Gate University. He retired from that position in 1994. At GGU he also served as the University Ombudsman and Master of Ceremonies. He held the rank of Senior Adjunct Professor in the University’s Graduate School of Business. After two years in retirement, he was recruited by Catholic Charities of San Francisco to be the Director, Peninsula Family Resource Center, San Mateo. He retired again in 1998. He was an active volunteer in a variety of programs: Women’s Recovery Association, Burlingame, San Mateo County Human Relations Commission, San Mateo County Self-Esteem Committee, San Carlos Economic Development Committee, San Mateo St. Vincent de Paul Society, St. Matthias Parish, Redwood City, Parish Council (Chairman), Therapy Dog Program with his faithful dog, Angel, Lodi, CA. He is survived by his cherished wife (and best buddy) Nancy, his beloved daughter Peggy, granddaughters Hayley and Katie, and, in Ireland, his brother John and his family, the family of his brother Michael (dec.), many nieces, nephews and life-long friends. At Pat’s request, there will be no funeral. A private gathering will be held at a later date to acknowledge his gratitude to all the wonderful people who enriched his life. A favorite quote: “Being Irish, he had an abiding sense of tragedy which sustained him through temporary periods of joy.” W.B. Yeats. (His family and especially his wife, want to note that, despite his laments, his periods of tragedy were few and brief while his periods of joy were many and long-lasting.) Those who knew and loved him appreciated his storytelling, his annual St. Patrick’s Day party, his informative and entertaining Christmas letters, his kindness and his great wit. He was the officiate of choice for family and friends’ weddings, where the bride and groom’s greatest hope was to build as beautiful a marriage as he and Nancy’s. Memorial gifts may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society, 50 North B Street, San Mateo, CA 94401.
