Obituary Preview: George B. Applin III, 44, of Springfield, Ohio passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, May 1, 2024.  He was born December 2, 1979, in Springfield, Ohio, the son of Joseph B. Hocker and Sherry Lynn Applin.
George spent most of his life between Columbus and Springfield, Ohio.  He loved making music, basketball and had recently become interested in gardening.  George would do anything for his friends and family, fiercely.  He like to make sure everyone knew that he was from Pleasant Street.  He made everyone that knew him laugh, cry or curse his name at the stories he told.
George is survived by his fiancée, Regina Long; his parents, Sherry Lynn Applin and Joseph Bryant and Eva Hocker; his daughter, Georgia Applin; stepbrothers, DeVon Roberts and Jaques Hocker; grandmother, Rose Ann Applin and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Visitation is Saturday, May 11, 2024 from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. in the Robert C. Henry Funeral Home.

Lela Mae Lytle Hall was born to Margaret Ann (Stripling) Lytle and Robert Braxton Lytle on August 12, 1925 in Springfield, Ohio. She was the oldest of twelve children blessed to that union. She is survived by her sibling, Ada Lee Barker of Toronto, Canada; by her children, two sons, Anthony V. Hall of Clearwater, Minnesota and Christopher L. (Gwendolyn) Hall of Springfield, Ohio and two daughters, Teresia Harper Simmons of St. Louis, Missouri and Karen Hall Hudson of Atlanta, Georgia; grandchildren, Neal Allen, Marcus (Sandra) Hall, Randall Harper, Rabiah Harper, Mandisa Hudson Vinson, Tavis Hudson, Demetrius Hall, Patricia George, Kanesha Hall Scott and Camille Hall; as well as, thirteen great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Braxton Lytle and Margaret (Stripling) Lytle; her husband of 64 years, Leonard Hall; her daughter, Gloria E. (Hall) Taylor; siblings, Leon Lytle, Harold Lytle, Robert (Annie Howell) Lytle Jr, James Lytle, Johnny Lytle, David Lytle, Larry Lytle, Elizabeth Lytle, Andrea Lytle, Vicki E. (Lytle) Langhorne; daughter-in-law, Deanna Mills and son-in-law, Joe C. Simmons.
Lela was educated at Springfield High School and graduated in 1945 with her high school diploma. She was an advocate in the field of medicine spending many years employed at Springfield City Hospitals as a nurse aide. She also earned her Licensed Practical Nursing Degree from the first Inaugural class of Clark State Technical College and she and classmate, Hazel Carter were the first Black graduates. She would go on for more training to become a licensed Midwife and Mental Health Therapist. During the illness of her husband, Lela served as his main caregiver and was there for many members of her community and family.
Lela was a member of the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Springfield, Ohio for over sixty years where she served in many positions; such as, the Minister of Music, Choir Director, Vacation Bible School Director and she served on the Deaconess Board. Lela was a Christian who loved and served the Lord until her illness prevented otherwise. Countless individuals and families were gifted by her love and guidance.
She was an active bowler and loved bowling in leagues with her husband, friends and sisters-in-law, Barbara Lytle and Annie Lytle. Lela had a passion for travel and was able to travel all over the world visiting family and friends. Lela was also involved in the National Baptist Convention and traveled to many and was involved in training others. She was known nationally and in the tri-state area for her beautiful singing voice. Our family is a family of musicians of every genre, Lela was not different. She took lessons in piano and organ and you could find her singing and playing the organ most Sunday mornings. She was happiest singing, playing and directing the choir.
We shall miss the force that she was and we will always cherish her memory and the marks that she leaves permanently etched upon our hearts. She was and will always be loved.
In Lieu of Flowers the Family asks that donations be made to your local Alzheimer’s Association.
Visitation is Monday, April 22, 2024 from 11 a.m. until the time of service at 12 noon in Restored Life Ministries.  Lela will be laid to rest in Ferncliff Cemetery.

Obituary Preview: Alvin P. Hall passed at home April 4, 2024. He was born January 4, 1940, the second child of Dr. Alvin P. Hall, Sr. and Ellen Francis (Talbert) Hall in Richmond Indiana. He spent elementary and high school years in Cleveland, Ohio, after living in Columbus, Ohio,Tuskegee, Alabama, Boston, Massachusetts, Chicago, Illinois, and Detroit, Michigan. In later years, he lived in Columbus, Ohio, Flint, Michigan, and Las Vegas, Nevada. He married Maryemma Ballard of Springfield, Ohio May 31, 1969 where they lived and later returned to after retirement in 2003.
Alvin received a BS Degree from Central State University, a Master Degree from Antioch College, a Specialist degree from Eastern Michigan University, as a recipient of a Mott Foundation Fellowship and was a Doctoral Candidate at the University of Michigan in the E.Ed  Degree program.   Al, as he was also known, served as Director of Community Education and Assistant Principal of Fulton Elementary Springfield. He served as Administrative Assistant for Community Service in the Beecher School System, Flint, Michigan, Assistant Principal and Director of Cottage Life in the Ohio Department of Youth Services in Columbus, Ohio and retired after serving as Principal and Chapter I and Community Education Director at Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (Retirement date December 1997) Columbus, Ohio.  Alvin is a certified Life Member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He was a founding member and member of the Board of Directors of the Ohio Community School Education Association and a founding member and past president of National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice, Ohio Chapter.
Continuing a committed and very happy marriage, he and Maryemma together enjoyed spending time with their family and friends, camping, swimming and working out, traveling, photography, dance roller skating, ballroom dancing, spending extensive time at their Las Vegas condominium, playing chair volleyball and attending live jazz events   and plays and other events.          Alvin was preceded in death by his mother and father; his brother-in-law (cousin), Charles (Chuck) Hall, and a niece Tonya (Mitchem) Hill. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of over 54 years, Maryemma; a sister, Dora Ellen (Hall) Simmons; a niece Doreen Mitchem; a sister-in-law, Elida (Toby Ballard) Hall, many cousins and other relatives and close friends.

Homer F. Roberts - January 24, 1941 - March 31, 2024

Obituary Preview: Homer F. Roberts, 83, passed away on Sunday, March 31st, 2024, at his residence, surrounded by loved ones. He was born on January 24, 1941, in Urbana, Ohio to Charles Eugene Sr. and Margaret (Stillgess) Roberts. Homer was a proud graduate of Urbana High School and later served as a Medic in the United States Army during the Vietnam conflict. He was honorably discharged.
After his military service, Homer went on to have a successful career at Cascade Corporation before retiring after many years of service. He was a dedicated member of Greater First Baptist Church and found great joy in his faith. Homer had a passion for the outdoors and spent much of his free time fishing, deer hunting, and bowling. His love for these activities brought him immense happiness throughout his life.
Homer will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his loving wife, Eleanor Roberts; his daughter, Djuna (Norman) Pickens of Missouri City, TX; his two sons, Homer Roberts, Jr., and Bradley Roberts, of Springfield, Ohio; several beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, a brother-in-law, Jerry Cooper; sister-in-law, Peggy Roberts and his beloved and adored doges, Lightning and Stormy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Eugene Sr., and Margaret (Stillgess) Roberts; his daughter, Anita Y. (Roberts) Henry; four sisters: Patricia Cooper, Charlene Couts, Dorothy Easly, and Bonnie Roberts; and three brothers: Charles “Chuck” Roberts, Jr., Roger Roberts, and Arthur Green.
Homer was known for his generous spirit and dedication to serving others. He was actively involved in volunteering for the Frontier's Club and the Elderly United of Springfield, where he made a positive impact on the lives of many. Among all those he loved; his grandchildren held a special place in his heart. His cherished angels are Anisha, Bianca, Brittany, Christian, Anita, Peja, Brooks, Matthew, Keosha, Kennedy, Johnnie Jr., Kamiya, Dominic and Tru. They brought him immense joy and he cherished every moment spent with them. Homer served as a surrogate "Paw Paw" for many others, sharing his love for fishing and hunting with younger generations.
His legacy of kindness, love, and service will live on in the hearts of those he touched. Homer's memory will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His passing leaves a void in the lives of many, but his spirit will continue to inspire and bring comfort to those who mourn his loss.
Homer F. Roberts will be remembered for his unwavering devotion to his family, his selfless acts of kindness, and his passion for life. May he rest in peace, knowing that he made a lasting impact on the world around him.
Visitation is Friday, April 12, 2024 from 11 a.m. until the time of service at 12 noon in Greater First Baptist Church.  Burial will follow in Rose Hill Burial Park with military honors.

Alex is survived and greatly missed by his wife, Virginia (Stanford) McCarty, daughter Gina Holland, nieces Linda Watson, Alfreda (Roland) Freeman, Kendra Harvey, brother-in-law Phil Cason, adopted son Michael Dixon, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends. Amber Moody was a loving and adventurous mother, aunt, friend, and colleague.  She passed away on March 12, 2024, at the age of 42.  She leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and strength. Born August 12, 1981, in Columbus, Ohio, to Carolyn Moody and Larry Waddy.  Amber was the youngest daughter.  Amber was a determined and caring individual.  Her life wasn’t traditional in any way but, that is why she was so loved.
Amber worked at Essex of Springfield for several years as a nurse’s aide.  Amber will be deeply missed by her children, Kaliyah (Khalil) Moody and Haylee Acquah; her sisters, Angela and Dawna Moody, and other friends and family.
Although she may no longer be here with us on earthside, her spirit still lives on in all the people she met.  A celebration of Amber’s life will be held on Friday, March 22, 2024, at My Church (334 S Plum Street, Springfield, Ohio 45506). The service will begin promptly at 10:30 a.m.  As we mourn the death of Amber, let us not forget that she is rejoicing with our Lord and Savior.  She lived for others and would want nothing more but for people to remember the positive impact she made.

Dorcas M. Jackson - April 17, 1928 - March 12, 2024

Obituary Preview: Dorcas Mae (Clay) Jackson, 95 of Springfield, Ohio, transitioned to Glory, on Tuesday, March 12, 2024. She was born in Springfield, Ohio, on April 17, 1928, to Maston Clay and Mary Louise (Ventress) Clay. Dorcas was a graduate of Springfield High School. Later in life, she received her Bachelor of Arts in Bible Studies from Liberty University and Doctor of Divinity from Grace Apostolic Bible College. In 1993, she authored the book, How to Implement a Jail Ministry.
Dorcas was employed for 15 years at Wright Patterson Airforce Base as an administrative assistant. She retired from Wilberforce University after 25 years of service in the registrar and bursar offices. Dorcas would later become the property manager for Kent Jackson Properties and served as corporate secretary for Kendor Development Corporation. She was instrumental in the development of the 40-unit Springfield Village housing complex which was completed in 1998.
Dorcas was a woman of deep faith. She loved spending time in prayer and studying the Word of God. Dorcas was an ordained minister of both the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World (PAW) and Higher Ground Always Abounding Assemblies Inc. In 1993, she was appointed as an International Evangelist of the North Philippines Council. She was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Family Worship Center in Springfield, OH for nearly 50 years and in 2019 was welcomed by her new church family at Higher Ground Always Abounding Assemblies in Columbus, OH.
She enjoyed hosting large monthly dinner parties, traveling with her three closest friends, “The Golden Girls,” and fishing and boating with her husband on Lake Erie.
Dorcas is survived by her children, Kent Jackson, Kevin (Lisa) Jackson, and Kerry Jackson; grandchildren, Latosha Jackson, Kevin Jackson II, Lindsey Jackson, Miles Senior, Brooke McCormick, and Jordan Johnson; two great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; special cousins, Myra Ventress, Shirley Ventress, and Marsha Jones; best friend, Betty Carter; special friend, Mother Elease Shaw; newly discovered niece and nephew, George and Betty Williams, and a host of loving nieces, nephews, relatives, church family, and friends. Dorcas was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick Jackson, her parents; brothers, James Clay, Matthew Clay, and Ardell Williams; sons, Kenneth Jackson, and Kennard Jackson; daughter, Patrice Senior; son-in-law, Ellsworth Senior; daughter-in-law, Beth Ann Jackson, and grandson, Hayden Jackson.
Dorcas epitomized elegance. She will always be known for her strong faith, fervent prayer, praising the Lord through dance, her exquisite fashion, humor, and words of wisdom.
A visitation in Springfield will be Saturday, March 23, 2024 from 3-4 p.m. in the Robert C. Henry Funeral Home.

He loved Stephen King novels, sci-fi & horror films, especially watching cheesy B-movies, old movies and shows with Tim. He was crazy about their houseful of spoiled, affectionate cats. He will be remembered for his kind heart, quiet demeanor, and sense of humor.

Marlyene was a civilian employee at Wright Patterson Air Force Base for her whole work life and retired over 30 years ago after 37 1/2 years of dedicated service. She loved the Lord and enthusiastically directed for many years the Angel Choir with her sister, Charlsey at Mt. Zion Baptist Church where she was a member all her life. She was a Deaconess as well.  She liked to read, travel, sing, and shop!
Marlyene is preceded in death by husband & best friend, Eugene, parents, sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn Robinson and Victor Robinson; daughter, Nicolle L. Harrison as well as a multitude of beloved family members.
She leaves behind three children, daughter, Akhmiri (Holly); son, Christopher Eugene (wife, Camille) Minnesota and Stacy Sharon of Springfield, Ohio; Sister, Charlesine Murph; grandchildren, Zamaya of Minneapolis, MN., Nashwa Bawuah of Columbus, Ohio, Anthony, Adaya, and Amari of Springfield, Ohio and a host of family and friends.

Cayden was blessed with a big sister and best friend, Kaydencei! "Junebug" as we called him also had several uncles that include Dale Wilson, Justin King, Martez, Onyx, Oryn and Olyn Person; his beautiful aunts include Lavender, Jazlynn, Jadelynn, Jasmine Wilson, Dione Bouye (Ronald), Rochelle Martin and Pearl Jones. Our baby was gifted with three god moms, Vaeh Clay, Alicia Evelyn and Candice Anderson. Cayden was way too precious for this earthly world, so the Lord called him back home. Baby boy was preceded in death by an uncle that met him at heaven’s gate, Kamell "Bub" Golden.

Obituary Preview: Roger L. Evans, 87, of Springfield. Ohio passed away Tuesday, January 16, 2024.  He was born April 24, 1936, in Springfield, Ohio, the son of Douglas and Mary (Thomas) Evans. Roger served his country in the United States Army and was honorably discharged. He retired after many years of dedicated service from the Springfield Police Department and served as Chief of Police.
Roger was affectionately called Pastor Chief at Greater Grace.  He thoroughly enjoyed teaching the Wednesday morning Bible Study. Roger enjoyed traveling all over the country and world. His best vacations were cruises with Sharon and their group of traveling friends. He also enjoyed trying various restaurants throughout the Miami Valley, Columbus, and Cincinnati.  Another enjoyment was shopping with Sharon anywhere they found a mall. Roger loved the Springfield Community and enjoyed serving in various capacities.
His memory will be cherished by his loving and devoted wife, Sharon Evans; daughter, Rhonda (Rodney) Jackson; brother-in-law, Marvin (Debbie) Flowers; three grandchildren, Brandy Evans, Christina Frisby, and Onesti Evans; great grandchildren, Justyce and Keyanne Simmons, Hailey Virgin, Breanna Bowman, and Toni West; daughter-in-law, Caren Evans, and a host of other relatives and friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Gerald Evans; grandson, Tracey Evans; brother, Carl Evans and sisters, Erma Goodwin, and Doris Kelley.
Pastor Chief showed extreme strength and kept a positive attitude throughout all his sickness, and he never complained. He never gave up but happily gave into God for his eternal reward.
Visitation is Friday, January 26, 2024 from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 12 noon in Greater Grace Temple.  Burial will follow in Ferncliff Cemetery.
