Obituary Preview: Carolyn Ruth Johnson of California, MO passed away on Monday, January 17, 2022 at Capital Region Medical Center in Jefferson City, MO.  She was born December 6, 1954, the daughter of the late Carl E. Johnson and the late Ruby (Reese) Johnson.
Carolyn was a graduate of California High School where she excelled in track and volleyball.  Upon high school graduation, she became employed with the former Cheseborough Ponds Company, Unilever, in Jefferson City following her ambition to work in the beauty industry.  She is a graduate of Merrill University School of Cosmetology in Jefferson City.  She was a licensed cosmetologist in Jefferson City for more than 38 years.  She continued her education in the cosmetology field by attending hairstylist shows, seminars and workshops throughout the country.
She was united in marriage for more than 45 years to the late Frederick “Freddie” Johnson, Sr. of California, MO.  To this union they had three children, Freddie Jr. and Angela and Phillip Johnson.
Carolyn is a second generation of the Johnson Hair Care Profession following in the footsteps of her father the late Carl E. Johnson, owner of Johnson Barber Shop in the historic district, “The Foot”.  Carolyn was a mentor and employer to many female students attending Lincoln University.  She introduced many to the art of hair care and entrepreneurship.  Some of her mentees are now cosmetologist.  She was frequently the stylist for the Royal Court at Lincoln University.  Carolyn supported charitable causes especially those which supported youth in their pursuit for education in California and Jefferson City with prominent ads in journals.  Carolyn, following the footsteps of her parents helped anyone and everyone in need.  She was a gifted seamstress in designing and making clothes for her grandchildren and window treatments for friends, craft designer, crochet maker, and wonderful cook.  All family holiday meals were held at her home.  She was a member of Mt. Zion Methodist Church in California for years and later was baptized at Mt. Vernon Church in Holts Summit.  She received several awards from numerous organizations to include but not limited to: NAACP and Lincoln University.
Survivors include her son, Frederick, Jr. of California, MO and daughter Angela (Kevin) Murphy of Texas, brothers, Carl Jr., Marshall, Steve, Mike, and grandchildren Genevive, Miles and Harper, brother-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and numerous customers and friends.  And her furry best friend, DINKY.
Along with her parents and her husband, a son, Phillips J. Johnson and sister Barbara Jackson preceded her in death.
Visitation will be Saturday, January 29, 2022 from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM at the United Methodist Church of California, MO with the Funeral Service beginning at 1:00 PM.  Burial will follow at the California City Cemetery.  Memorials in her name are suggested to the United Methodist Church of California, MO.

Steven Wayne Colvin - July 09, 1954 - March 25, 2020

Obituary Preview: Steven Wayne Colvin departed this earth in the company of angels on Wednesday, March 25, 2020,               in his home.
He was born July 9, 1954, in Ogden, Utah, to parents Marilyn (Malan) Colvin Wilson and Wayne D. Colvin.  He was united in marriage on October 11, 1974, to Karen Denise (Osborne) Colvin.
Steve was an avid hunter and fisherman, was a member of the NRA, and thoroughly enjoyed vintage cars, including his 1965 and 1973 Mustangs.  He loved walking in the woods and enjoying all nature had to offer.  He also enjoyed the time he spent on his tractor and backhoe.  He liked staying busy and enjoyed remodeling his own home as well as many others.  Steve never met a stranger and enjoyed conversing with his many friends.
His years of employment included carpentry, 20 years of employment at Nordyne, Inc. in Boonville, MO, where he was a lead person, a supervisor, managed quality and production and a friend to many there.  He was employed by Premier Services in Shipping/Receiving for 3 years until his retirement.
He was preceded in death by his father, Wayne Colvin, stepmother, Arlene Colvin, stepfather, Ernie Wilson, younger brother, Eddie Colvin,  stepsister, Cindy Jessop Webb, mother and father-in-law, John and Ethel Osborne, and brother-in-law Art Rosean.
Steve is survived by his wife, Denise Colvin, mother, Marilyn Wilson, sister Pam (Adam) Gardiner, brother, Wes Colvin (Natalie), step sister, Robin Brennan (Robert), step brother, Craig Jessop, sisters-in-law, Darlene Rosean, and Geri Uribe (Manuel), and numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

Morris Dean Oesterly - March 12, 1956 - January 18, 2020

Obituary Preview: Morris Dean Oesterly, 63, passed away Saturday, January 18, 2020. Morris is preceded in death by his father, Neil Oesterly. He is survived by his mother, Phyllis Oesterly; daughter, Sarah Polo; son-in-law, Juan Polo; brother, Mark Oesterly; and his previous wife, Janet Oesterly. Morris was a proud Christian, conservative and Republican, in that order. He served for years as a pastor in northern Ohio, and then as a camera technician at Louisville's Wave 3 television station. After becoming disabled, he pursued studies in Computer Science and amateur radio (call sign K4MDO). He was extremely proud of his certifications and all of the improvements he did to his Louisville home and garden. He also loved music, and played the trumpet and cornet. His intelligence, fierce wit, and soft heart will be missed. We know he is having the best first week in Heaven. A graveside service will be held Friday, January 24th at 11:00 am in the California City Cemetery, California, MO.

Joe was born March 3, 1949 at the Latham Hospital in California, MO, son of Earl and Frances (Neal) Pardoe. Joe served in the United States Army from 1969-1971 during the Vietnam War and in West Germany. He graduated from Lincoln University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology. During college Joe started his career as a Corrections Officer 1 at Algoa Correctional Center. He helped open the Correctional Center at Boonville, MO. Joe retired as Assistant Warden at Tipton Correctional Center in 2003.
Joe is survived by his children; April (Rory) Stegeman; Amber Bolin; Andra Pardoe; Aleah Pardoe; and their mother Rita Garrett Cahill. Grandchildren; Savannah, Alaina, Chatman, Isaac, Blaize, Bentley, Brady, Brynn, and Jaelyn. Siblings; Joann (Charlie) Suggs, Earlene (Jodie) Heck, Kim Pardoe, Nancy (Clay) Dunn, and nieces and nephews. Joe has cousins throughout Missouri, and the state of Georgia.
He is preceded in death by his parents and son-in-law Andrew Bolin.
Visitation will be Thursday, May 16, 2019 from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM at Phillips Funeral Home of California, MO with a Celebration of Life beginning at 7:00 PM with Brother Tim Redmond officiating.

Freddie was employed with Carpenter Union #945 for twelve years and then for the MODOT bridge crew for twenty-five years.  He was a member of the Mt. Zion Methodist Church of California, MO.  He was an avid fisherman and was a friend to all and truly never met a stranger.

Ethel Frances Osborne - February 10, 1921 - March 11, 2018

Obituary Preview: Ethel Frances (Childress) Osborne, Jamestown, Missouri, departed this life on March 11, 2018.  She was  born to Harry N. Childress and Cora M. (Martin) Childress on February 10, 1921, in rural Moniteau County, near Lupus, Missouri, later moving into Lupus, where she grew up.  She started to Sunday school at age 5 years and was baptized into the Lupus Baptist Church at 14 years of age.  She was married to John G. Osborne, of Fulton, Missouri, on May 17, 1942, in Montgomery City, Missouri.  They were married 59 years before his passing on May 27, 2001.
Ethel was employed by the J.C. Penney Co. in Jefferson City, Missouri, prior to and after WWII.  After her retirement from J.C. Penney Co., she served 23 years as the Jamestown C-1 School crossing guard. She served as Secretary to the Board of Jamestown Senior Housing for 6 years.
Ethel and John lived in Colorado for 25 years before moving to Jamestown in 1976.  In Colorado, Ethel was an avid church worker teaching children’s church, Bible school and served as church clerk and Sunday school secretary.  She was White Cross president and was involved in the Women’s Missionary Society.  She also worked part-time at the office of the County Clerk in Georgetown, Colorado.  She loved piecing quilts and quilting them and belonged to the old Lupus Quilting Club that was in existence for many years.  She loved sewing and could make anything.  She loved gardening and canning and won many prizes and ribbons on her canned products, quilts and crafts at the local fairs.  Family and friends were often the recipients of her wonderful canned products.  She was a member of Jamestown Baptist Church.  She also attended Jamestown Assembly of God Church.  She had such great love and compassion for all animals, especially her pet dog and cats, and they really loved her.  No stray animal ever appeared at her house that they weren’t fed and watered and sometimes found new good homes.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John, her parents, Harry N. and Cora M. Childress, four brothers, Harvey, Harold, Marvin and Kenneth, and one son-in-law, Art Rosean.
She is survived by her three daughters, Darlene Rosean, Butler, MO, Denise Colvin (Steve), Geri Uribe (Manuel), of Jamestown, and granddaughters Renee’ Bannerman, Butler, MO, Rayne Chantel, Butler, MO, and Destin Allen, Raytown, MO; and two great-grandsons, Jayden and Jax Allen.  She is also survived by her three sisters, Hazel Lampton, Boonville, Bonnie June Hayes, Kansas City, and Katherine Rose Schulze, Jamestown.
Visitation will be Thursday, March 15, 2018 from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM at Jamestown Baptist Church in Jamestown, MO with the Funeral Service beginning at 11:00 AM with Chaplain Bart Larsen officiating.  Interment will follow at Bethel Cemetery in Jamestown, MO.

Besides her husband of 60 years, Larry Boyd Wolfrum, Ann is survived by a son, Dale Wolfrum (Elena) of Florida; a brother, Robert Barnes of Alabama; 2 grandchildren, Andrea Walker and Stephanie Sansone, and 4 great-grandchildren.  Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandson, Christopher Wolfrum.
Visitation will be held at Phillips Funeral Home, 211 S. Oak St., California, MO, Saturday, October 28, 2017 from 11:00 to 1:00 PM followed by a funeral service at 1:00 PM with Rev. Collette Jones officiating.  Burial will be in Evangelical Cemetery, California, Missouri.

Jean Ellen Rohrbach - October 06, 1934 - September 24, 2017

Obituary Preview: Jean Ellen Rohrbach, 82, of Valdosta, GA and formerly of California, Mo, peacefully parted this world on Sunday, September 24, 2017, at Langdale Hospice House in Valdosta, GA.  She was born on October 6, 1934, in Clarksburg, MO, a daughter of the late Porter and Ellen (Gish) Donley.  On December 21, 1952, she was united in marriage to Bobby L. Rohrbach, who preceded her in death on November 3, 2002.
A life-long resident of Moniteau County, Jean was raised on the family farm.  She graduated from Clarksburg High School, and attended Central Missouri State College.  She and Bob farmed full time, as well as working off the farm, until their retirement.  Jean also worked at the Clarksburg Post Office and Burgers Country Smokehouse in California for a number of years.
She was a strong woman of faith.  In addition to being a devoted wife, mom, and “MaMa”, she was just as devoted to her church and church family at the United Church of Christ in California, Mo.  She taught Sunday school and she and Bob helped lead their church’s Youth Fellowship group for many years.Jean so enjoyed watching all the local kids participate in their school sports and other extracurricular activities.  She cheered for them as hard as she did for her own grandkids.  While still healthy, you would seldom miss seeing her in the bleachers at any Pinto home games.  She would continue to keep up with the college careers of those who had the opportunity to participate at a higher level.  She was one of the most avid Mizzou and St. Louis Cardinal fans around, as well.
She is survived by one son, Mitch Rohrbach (Linda) of Valdosta, GA; two daughters, Cathy De Lisa (Mike) of Phoenix, AZ, and Beth Rohrbach (Brian Sandlin) of  Los Angeles, CA; two grandchildren, Neal Rohrbach (Ashley) of Valdosta, GA, and Mandy Rohrbach (Matt Jenkins) of Burke, VA; three step-grandsons,  Mike De Lisa, Jr. (Kristin), Kenny De Lisa, and Joe De Lisa (Kate) all of Phoenix, AZ; two great grandsons and six step-great grandchildren; one sister, Stella York of Chillicothe, Mo; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Jean was preceded in death by two brothers, Lloyd Donley and Leland Donley. Arrangements are under the direction of Phillips Funeral Home, California, Mo.  Visitation will be Sunday October 1st from 4:00 -7:00 PM at the Funeral Home.  The funeral will be at the United Church of Christ, 101 N. Robert Daniel Wallenmeyer - August 03, 1921 - March 24, 2017

Obituary Preview: Robert Daniel Wallenmeyer, 95, of California, Missouri passed away Friday, March 24, 2017 after a brief illness and a deep sadness after losing his last remaining sibling, Ruby, in January.
He was born on August 3, 1921 on a farm between Jamestown and Prairie Home, Missouri.  He was the second child of Otto William & Louise Annette (Kaempfer) Wallenmeyer, who preceded him in death.
He attended Carlos School, finishing the eighth grade, where he made high marks.  Like many of that generation, he left school to work the family farm.  That was something he regretted, even into his senior years.  He knew the value of a good education, and encouraged his children to apply themselves in school.
At some point prior to the war, he left to work the wheat harvest in Kansas, saving enough to buy his first old clunker. He was drafted and entered into the US Army on November 12, 1942.  He said he was passed-over for the draft the first round because he was born blind in his right eye, which his children did not know growing up for he hid it well, but took him on a subsequent round and assigned him to the artillery.  You can read his military history, in his own words, here:  https://www.wwiimemorial.com/Registry/plaque.aspx?honoreeID=2063948
He was a farmer his whole life until retirement, though he supplemented his income through a variety of occupations.  He worked at the Woolen Mill in California, Phillips 66, a number of road and building construction jobs, and finally Von Hoffman Press, from where he retired.
He was a member of Salem Baptist Church, The American Legion, VFW and The Fraternal Order of Eagles.
He is survived by his children Debbie (Steve) Gonzales of Lake Ozark, MO, and their children Melissa and Tony, Bill (Mary) Wallenmeyer of Shermans Dale, PA, and their two sons Otto and Yanni, and Roberta (Dave) Rothstein of California, MO, and her children Eric and Stephanie.  Plus 4 great grandchildren.  He was proceeded in death by his parents, sisters Ruby Ziehmer, Mildred Cain and Bessie Sutton, brother Rev. Franklin was an accomplished welder, owning his own business for many years and also worked for DeLong’s in Jefferson City for 15 years.  He was a Charter Member of The Shooters Club, Main Street Baptist Church and the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Lodge 4027 in California, MO.  Franklin enjoyed hunting, fishing, welding, woodworking and his cats; Midnight and Peanut.

Obituary Preview: Grace W. Clay , 102, died Saturday, September 10, 2016 at Moniteau Care Center in California, MO.  Grace Wilson Clay, daughter of Clarence Oliver and Vivian McBee Wilson, was born near Stet in Ray County, MO on November 6, 1913.  She graduated from Stet High School in 1931.
Grace married Thomas Ewing Clay of Lupus, MO at Liberty, MO on August 9, 1941.  Their life together began on the Clay Farms in Lupus, MO.  They lived with Gertrude and Dorsey Clay at El Moro (family home) until Ewing passed away in 1971.   Grace began working in 1973 at the University of Missouri and retired in 1981.
Grace was known for her needlework and quilting.  She made many quilts to use and gift to close friends and family; she quilted daily at Moniteau Care Center, which was an inspiration to all.  Grace had a passion for genealogy, evidenced by her Historical Society volunteerism and continued work on the Clay Family History.
Grace was a former member of the Lupus Baptist Church and a member of the First Baptist Church of California since 1982.  She was also a member of the Eastern Star and numerous Quilting Clubs.  For years, she worked as a Home Economics Supervisor at the Missouri State Fair and a Sunday School Teacher at the Lupus Baptist Church.
Grace loved God, family, friends, quilting, antiques, baking, music and life.  Grace loved her nieces and nephews who marveled at her generous love, time, attention, cooking and quilting.
Grace was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers: Kenneth, Melvin, and Clarence Oliver, Jr., and two sisters: Madarine and Gertrude.
Services will be held at The First Baptist Church on Friday, September 16, 2016.  Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. followed by the funeral at 11:00 a.m.  Brother Greg Morrow will be officiating.  Burial will be in the California City Cemetery.

Obituary Preview: Vernie Lee Murray, 86, of California, Missouri, died Sunday, July 17, 2016 in Columbia, Missouri.  She was born January 15, 1930 in Eldon, MO to Everett Lester Connell and Hildred Clemence (Slote) Connell.  She was a lifelong resident of mid-Missouri, having lived in Jefferson City and California.  She was married November 30, 1946 to Eugene Cecil Garrison, who preceded her in death on July 5, 1969.  They had three sons: Jerry Garrison who died as an infant, David Eugene Garrison, and Tommy Joe Garrison. Vernie was baptized at an early age in the Lutheran faith at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Stringtown, MO.
She later married Hiram Wilson Garrison on October 20, 1974, and remained married to him until his death October 19, 1983.  She married Lee “Pete” Burtam Murray on February 4, 1984.  He preceded her in death on January 15, 2012.
Vernie worked for 25 years at McGraw Edison in Jefferson City, until her retirement in 1988.  She also worked at Tweedy’s Shoe Company for 6 years.  After her retirement she started babysitting local children in her home along with her husband Lee, and continued to do that for over 20 years, continuing to babysit alone after her husband’s death.
She also enjoyed going to garage sales, bluegrass music festivals, and eating at restaurants.  As a young woman she dearly enjoyed dancing.  She loved spending time with her family and her close circle of friends.  Most of all she loved children and took great joy in caring for them and watching them grow up.
She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 sisters; Fay Darlene Beeler and Ella May Connell, who died as an infant, 3 husbands, and 3 children.
She is survived by 3 grandchildren; David Garrison and his wife Sonya of Jefferson City, Rodney Garrison and his wife, Maggie of Russellville, and Steve Garrison and his wife Dorothy Jo of Brazito, 9 great-grandchildren, and one nephew Chris Beeler of California, MO. She is also survived by one niece Andrea Yurko and 2 great-nephews Evan Yurko of Holyoke, MA and Zane Linehan of Northampton, MA.
Visitation will be held Saturday, July 23 from 11:00 – 12:00 at Phillips Funeral Home, 211 South Oak Street, California, MO followed by a funeral service at 12:00 with Reverend Dr. Peter Kurowski officiating.  Private inurnment will be at the convenience of the family in California City Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association, the Glaucoma Research Foundation, or the American Kidney Foundation in her memory.

Madalyn was born on June 6, 1910, on the family farm north of California, to loving parents, Henry and Stella Scott Dearing. Madalyn went to school in a one-room schoolhouse (Highland) through her elementary years and then went to California High School where she graduated salutatorian of her class of 1928. She played basketball and loved and played all sports available at the time. She was known in high school as the blue-eyed blonde that was always jolly and had a kind word and a smile for everyone. On October 8, 1929, she married Norman Vivion, who preceded her in death July 9, 1959. Following her high school graduation in 1928, Madalyn taught for one year at the Highland School, and in 1942, she began working at the California Manufacturing Plant, where she eventually retired. Madalyn and Norman had one child, a daughter, Dorothy Louise Vivion Bolinger born June 19, 1931, on the family farm north of California. Dorothy married Freddie Bolinger and had six daughters who all have married and are still married to their first and only husbands. Madalyn was raised to know and serve the lord. Her family attended the Brush Creek Baptist Church near their farm where Madalyn played the piano and her father led the music. Since 1954, she has been a member of the Salem Baptist Church. She served the church at Salem in many different ways. She was pianist, choir member, church clerk, VBS teacher, Sunday School teacher, Women’s Missions leader and quilted many quilts with the women’s group. She knew her Bible well, and she started each day with Bible reading and prayer. She lived each day to serve the Lord and those around her. Madalyn loved to crochet and also created many hand-painted ceramic pieces. Many of her crochet pieces and ceramics were given as gifts to loved ones. She also enjoyed gardening, sewing, quilting, and traveling. She visited many locations in the United States in her travels. Madalyn was a great cook and her family always enjoyed eating the food she prepared. Although she spent much of her life caring for her loved ones, Madalyn always took care of herself, as well. Her good health and longevity continually amazed those who knew her. She was always content and her cheerful disposition was always evident. She will be remembered for her kindness and gentleness, for her love for the lord and her love for others. We rejoice in the life she lived and in the eternal life she has now entered with our Heavenly Father. Madalyn is survived by her six granddaughters and their husbands, Kathy and Mike Volkart of Russellville; Cheryl and Jack Knipp of Tipton; Joyce and Norman Rohrbach of California; Brenda and Donnie Sells of Prairie Home; Sara and Rex Hill of California; and Barbara and Dan Kuttenkuler of Festus; 15 great grandchildren, and 32 great, great grandchildren. Madalyn was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Clark Dearing, her husband Norman Vivion, her daughter and son-in-law Dorothy and Fred Bolinger, and one grandson, Robbie Knipp. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, December 28, 2015 at the Salem Baptist Church.Visitation will be on Sunday from 4 to 6 pm at the Phillips Funeral Home, California.Memorials are suggested to the Salem Baptist Church c/o Phillips Funeral Home, 211 S.
