Larry was born in Detroit, Michigan and graduated from Cooley High School at the age of 18. He married Patty, the “TRUE LOVE” of his life, on 12/1/1956. After raising their four girls in Westland, MI, his ‘heaven on earth’ was living with his Bride in the beautiful home they built in Grayling, Michigan.
He is survived by his Bride Patricia (Murphy) Gillies of 67 years, his sister Audrey (Grant) Queener, Howell, MI, his four daughters and sons-in-law, Janet (Edvarts) Abermanis, White Lake, MI, Susan (James) Little, Jeannette, PA, Barbara (Robert) Rehn, Mulberry, FL, Deborah (Brian) Iverson, Simi Valley, CA, 10 grandchildren, Christopher (Nichole) Abermanis, Laura (Arthur) Wakeford, Amy Rose Kim Abermanis, James Little, Bryce Little, Michael (Courtney) Rehn, Megan (Christopher) Sutherland, Marissa (Gaylon) Cathey, Nicole Iverson, Jamie Iverson, 9 great-grandchildren, Dollyanna, Inara, Isabelle, Maxton, Jordan, Carly, Ellie, Piper, Lucas, with the 10th coming in September, plus many nieces & nephews as well as great-nieces & great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Wilfred & Dorothea Gillies, brothers Wilfred Gillies, George Gillies and his granddaughter Baby Mary.
He worked many jobs, sometimes 3 at a time, to make sure his family had everything they needed. This includes Ira Wilson Dairy, H&R Hardware, installing air conditioning systems after work and then retired after 30+ years at General “Generous” Motors.
Larry had such a welcoming aura about him that when he talked to you he made you feel as though you were long time friends. His daughters’ friends would come over just to hang out with “Mr G”. His sons-in-law would say “he was a man’s man” and since he had every tool known to God and man, he was always helping them with any and every project they had. He made an indelible mark and will truly be missed by all who knew him, whether they called him Larry, Dad, Grandpa, Uncle or Mr G.
A memorial is pending and will be announced to family and friends when an appropriate date can be arranged.
We will never forget that you are “fine as wine”. We love you “you gorgeous little thing you”.
