Obituary Preview: Donald M. Andrews, 94, of Montgomery passed away on March 10, 2017 at Symphony of Tillers, Oswego, Illinois. Don was the youngest child of Burton & Nellie Andrews born May 14, 1922 in Aurora, Illinois. Don is preceded in death by his parents, sister, Eleanor (Howard) Kneller, brother, Stanley Andrews, and first wife, Marilyn.Don is survived by his wife of 13 years, Charlotte Andrews of Montgomery, daughter Pamela of Tallahassee, FL and Jannene (Roy) Hansen of Aurora, 4 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and sister in law Patsy Andrews. Charlotte’s daughters Karen Senft of Aurora, Julie (Ron) Weigand of Montgomery, her son William and wife Caroline of Kansas City; along with Charlotte’s grandchildren and great grandchildren. Don graduated from East Aurora High School with the class of 1941. He was assigned to Signal Corps in the United States Army.  When he returned from the Army, he worked delivering telegraphs, then at Nicor Gas, and retired from Commonwealth Edison after 35 years of service.Don built his first house out of stone that was delivered by the coal train.  Don being Don was always thinking and placed an ad in the paper in hopes to lure the sailors at Great Lakes to help him move the stone for all the beer they could drink.   All the stone was moved in a weekend. The house still stands near the Lebanon Park in Aurora. Don had many layers.  He enjoyed fishing; especially his annual trip to the upper parts of Wisconsin where he and his friends would spend a week on the lake sitting in their boats.  But fish was never served as Don was very particular on what he would eat. Don began his love of camping and traveling with a pop-up. Don achieved his dream of owning an Airstream; which many called “the Ritz on wheels”.  Don spent a month traveling in his Airstream across Alaska.  Don and Charlotte also visited Ireland and Hawaii together.  Don caught the gambling bug later in life and he enjoyed traveling with Charlotte on the senior buses visiting casinos in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Iowa, and Mississippi, Don was a member of many bowling leagues at St. Paul, Fairlane, and Parkside Bowling Lanes.  Even when he couldn’t bowl anymore, you would find Don with his coffee watching his former teammates bowl at Parkside every Tuesday. Don loved music and enjoyed recording his “sweet music” from the big band era for his family and friends.  He passed his love of music on to his daughters Jannene who sings in the choir, and Pamela who is a music teacher. We will never more hear his cheery “Howdy” greeting.  We say goodbye to Don and wish him happy trails until we meet again.Family will be receiving guests on Tuesday, March 14, 2017 from 10:00 AM until the time of service at 12:00 PM at Dieterle Memorial Home, 1120 S. Broadway Ave. Montgomery, IL 60358. Interment will be private.
