James Arthur Niemeyer - Unknown - December 29, 2022

Departed: 12/29/2022 (Waveland)
Obituary Preview: James Arthur Niemeyer, 84, entered into eternal peace and rest on December 29, 2022 with his children by his side.
The family will receive guests on Saturday, January 7, 2023 from 10:30 AM to 11:00 AM with funeral service beginning at 11:00 AM at Christ Episcopal Church, Bay St. Louis, Mississippi.
James was born September 8, 1938, in St. Louis, Missouri, son of the late Ralph Charles Niemeyer and Virginia Risser Niemeyer. James, more often known as Jim and then later in life as ‘Cappy’, as his granddaughters affectionately dubbed him, was a dreamer from an early age. He was ever drawn to a life on or near the water. Jim loved boating and fishing, having grown up yachting on the upper Mississippi River with his family on their Chris Craft cabin cruiser, the “Nancy Lee", named after his sister. After serving as an officer in the United States Navy from 1956 to 1962, in 1967 he moved to New Orleans with his wife, Janet Elliott Niemeyer, to further his career in the marine insurance industry. In the 1970’s, he co-founded the insurance firm, Underwriters Marine Services, which he successfully operated for years. In the 1980’s, Jim channeled his entrepreneurial spirit with wife Jan and son Kirk in the ambitious startup company, Niemeyer Printing. Jim was an original officer of the Algiers Economic Development Foundation and an active member of Rotary Club.
While tugs and barges occupied much of his career, yachting was his personal passion. His interests were as diverse as the boats he spent time on reflected: from a luxury trawler yacht named the CayJan, after his wife Janet, cruising with family in the British Virgin Islands, to backwater bay boats actively fishing the marshes of Southeast Louisiana, to a classic Columbia 38 sailboat, and finally taking up full time residence on a Gibson houseboat he christened, Beachcomber, in Gulf Breeze, Florida. In 1997, Jim set off on a great solo sailing adventure, single-handedly sailing 7,000 miles from New Orleans to southern Florida, up the eastern seaboard, and then throughout the Bahamas over the course of a few years. Once aboard his boat, Jim never wanted to live on land again. He eventually earned his USCG 100 ton master captain license and began working in commercial assistance towing and pleasure charter boating.

Walton Wayne Willoughby - February 12, 1941 - November 26, 2022

Departed: 11/26/2022 (Waveland)
Obituary Preview: Walton Wayne Willoughby of Poplarville, Mississippi, passed away on November 26, 2022, at Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, surrounded by family and friends.
Known as Wayne, he was born in Bogalusa, Louisiana, to Sarah Dandridge Willoughby and Walton “Peg” Willoughby. They lived in Metairie, Louisiana, until he was age six, when he and his family moved to Poplarville, Mississippi, where his mother later married Dillard Angus “Dick” Durham. He would become a standout multi-sport athlete in basketball, baseball, and football in the Desoto Conference at Poplarville High School. Some of his accolades during this time included: Most Valuable Player-football 1959; All-Desoto Conference 1959; Undefeated Baseball Team-Desoto Conference 1957 and 1959; Most Athletic 1959; and Mr. Poplarville High School 1959. He was a member of the National Guard from 1957-1961. He received a football scholarship to Pearl River Community College under legendary Coach Dobie Holden, playing as safety and halfback as well as back-up quarterback. The Wildcats earned back-to-back State Championship titles in 1959 and 1960. The dominant Wildcats were invited to play in multiple bowl games during that time. He received a scholarship offer to continue his football career at Delta State. Wayne was recently inducted into the Poplarville High School Alumni Inaugural Hall of Fame Class for his contributions to PHS as an athlete, military service, and community leader.
Wayne joined the United States Navy, serving from 1961-1965, traveling many areas of the world. He was stationed on USS Randolph CVS-15, an anti-submarine carrier operating in the Mediterranean, Atlantic, and Caribbean. During his service aboard USS Randolph, one of the tasks for the ship was to act as a recovery ship on February 20, 1962, for John Glenn, upon his return from space. During the Cuban Missile Crisis, under former President John F. Kennedy, the Soviets brought in ballistic missiles to Cuba. USS Randolph was called in, crossing into Sargasso Sea on October 27, 1962, engaging in the infamous naval blockade. The Randolph Task Group was able to head off a submerged Soviet submarine with the assist of eleven other U.S. Navy destroyers, which were tasked with surrounding the Soviet B-59 submarine near Cuba. USS Randolph continually dropped practice depth-charges from destroyers and aircraft, in an attempt to force the B-59 Soviet submarine to surface. The historical context is believed that the captain of the Soviet submarine had the intention to launch a nuclear torpedo at USS Randolph but was able to be coaxed by his commander to await further command orders; therefore, dodging what would have been World War III. The Soviet submarine came to surface at 8:53 p.m. and observed the name “RANDOLPH” etched across the carrier. USS Randolph had relentlessly and successfully pursued the B-59 throughout the day-long ordeal, lasting nearly 24 hours. The Cuban Missile Crisis ended the following day. He then served in the Navy reserves from 1965-1967. Wayne held numerous membership titles in the U.S. Navy including National Board of Boilers, Pressure Vessels-Care Inspector, American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
He served as Manager at Bass Pecan Company, owner of the “Corner Store” in Poplarville during in the early 1980’s, Ace Hardware employee, offshore work, HEB Grocery Store Chain in Austin, Texas. In his final years of employment, he worked at Walmart in Picayune, Mississippi. In his retirement, he spent 15 years volunteering at Brother’s Keeper, a food pantry that provides groceries to families in need, throughout Pearl River County. He received “Keeper of the Year” award in 2011, and served as Brother’s Keeper President and Vice President among his time spent at BK. He planted a community garden to provide additional fresh vegetables to contribute to their cause. Wayne found much purpose and a social outlet in his years of participation with Brothers Keepers. He made special friendships with this group in all the years served. He recently received the honor of having his Brothers Keepers apron retired, known for its use in their many fish fry fundraisers. Wayne was also a member, and has served on the Board of Trustees, of First United Methodist Church of Poplarville, Mississippi, directed under Dr. Eric Pridmore.
Wayne had many areas of talent that shined in his hobbies, including his avid love and knowledge of horticulture. He served as a Board Member for Keep Mississippi Beautiful and Mississippi Pecan Growers. Most notably, his artistic abilities ranging from oil paintings, woodwork, drawings, and funny cartoons that many people throughout the region, have hanging in their homes today. He coached little league baseball and basketball at times in his life. He loved sports and looked forward to attending Friday night football games for his beloved Poplarville Hornets over the years. He loved watching college football on Saturdays. He also rooted for his nephew, Coach Jay Ladner’s team, of Southern Mississippi Men’s Basketball. He was a New Orleans Saints fan and attended the first held Saints football game at Tulane Stadium. He also enjoyed music from the 1950’s and 1960’s era. Wayne was a multi-talented man with a quick wit and prankster personality. He often joked around in saying the World Wide Web (WWW) stole his initials. If you knew him, you knew the one liner jokes he quipped, never knowing if he was serious. He had his series of eye rolling jokes; he would casually spin off to make others laugh. Wayne was quite a character. Through the years, he has been described as a fast moving, hard-hitting defensive back, silly, witty, handsome, sarcastic, funny, humble, talented, artistic, wild, selfless in servitude, creative, strong, resilient, tough, stubborn; and complex. In having his presence and contributions for nearly 82 years of life, we were fortunate to know him, learn from him, spend time with him, love him, and laugh at his tales and personality. He will be greatly missed in our lives and community. He was preceded in death by his father, Walton “Peg” Willoughby; mother, Sarah Dandridge Durham; stepfather, Dillard Durham; and sister, Gaye Willoughby
Wayne is survived by three daughters, Margaret Willoughby Davis of Poplarville, MS, Sarah Willoughby Rogers of Poplarville, MS, and Marie “Rie Rie” Willoughby of Bay Saint Louis, MS; sisters, Peggy (Larry) Ladner of Kiln, Mississippi, and Dorothy (James Richard, Sr. “Huck”) Ross of Jacksonville, Florida; grandchildren, Calynn Davis Ladner of Necaise, MS, Jacey Davis Harris of Poplarville, MS, Ashton Rogers Brown of Davenport, FL, Cameron Rogers of Poplarville, MS, Peyton Davis of Poplarville, MS, and Josh Davis of Dover, Delaware; great grandchildren, Levi Ladner, Olivia Ladner, Natalie Ladner, Kaleb Ladner, Kayson Ladner, Haisley Ladner, and Warren Beech; nieces & nephews, Pam Ladner of Gatlinburg, TN, Kim Ladner Taylor of Shelbyville, TN, Stewart Ladner of Bassfield, MS, Jay Ladner of Hattiesburg, MS, James Richard, Jr. “Scooter” Ross of Jacksonville, FL and Caitlin Ross Armstrong of Jacksonville, FL.

Departed: 10/27/2022 (Waveland)
Obituary Preview: Bay St. Louis, MS-Grace Marie Puls Santa Cruz, 84, departed this life peacefully on October 27, 2022, while surrounded by her adoring family and friends. Grace led a very humble and Christian filled servant life that focused on her family, church, gardening and friendships. She was born in New Orleans, LA on July 1, 1938, the daughter of Dr. Elmer E. Puls, (Dean at Southeastern Louisiana University), and Grace Mitchell Puls of Hammond, LA (predeceased).   She is survived by husband of 65 years, Edgar W. “Woody” Santa Cruz, Jr., and also leaves behind two sons, Edgar W. Santa Cruz, III(Susan) of New Orleans, LA, John R. “Randy” Santa Cruz(Charlotte) of Bay St. Louis, MS, and daughter, Elizabeth A. Santa Cruz of Beaumont, TX.  That love of family became even larger as she was blessed with 8 grandchildren; Paul Batman (Amy), Joel Batman (Haeley), Neal Batman (Abby), Katherine Santa Cruz Sheely (Scott), Dr. John R. Santa Cruz, Jr., Reid Santa Cruz, Mary Grace Santa Cruz and Ellie Santa Cruz; and 7 great-grandchildren that became a shining light in her last years of life. Grace is also survived by her sister, Mattie Patricia “Patty” Puls of Covington, LA and predeceased by her brother Dr. Elmer “Earl” Puls, Jr., (Jo Ann M. Puls) of Baton Rouge, LA.
While a student at Newcomb College in New Orleans, Grace met and married her husband who was attending Tulane University. They spent several years raising their children in San Antonio and San Francisco before returning to her husband’s childhood home in Bay St. Louis, MS after Hurricane Camille hit in 1969. For the next 53 years they became embedded in the community where Grace served on Boards of the Junior Auxiliary, Bay-Waveland Yacht Club and Senior Warden of her beloved Christ Episcopal Church. She was instrumental in helping the church rebuild after Hurricane Katrina demolished the structure.  Grace was employed as a licensed nursing home administrator for Gulf View Haven Nursing Home (formerly Hotel Reed) in Bay St. Louis, which was owned by the Santa Cruz family. Her final and favorite occupation was serving as the administrative secretary for the local Catholic girls’ school, Our Lady Academy “OLA”, where she was known as a mentor and friend to many young ladies. Grace had a gift and passion for gardening, something she learned from her father. When she couldn’t be found filling her home with warmth and kindness as an exceptional chef, to gather family and friends, she was in her garden growing the most fabulous flowers and vegetables that would rival any nursery or farm! She always found the good in others and supported their choices in life which was a beautiful character trait admired by all who knew and loved her. The name Grace alone describes the kindness, forgiveness and compassion she had for others, and all that is good in this world. Every life she touched has a story of how she made their lives better for being part of hers. Although life will never be the same for anyone who knew her, now that she’s gone we are forever blessed with her never-ending grace in our lives!
