Dorothy Adeline Frank - May 07, 1926 - April 15, 2024

Departed: 04/15/2024 (Spring Green)
Obituary Preview: Dorothy Adeline (Liegel) Frank, age 97, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday, April 15, 2024. She was born on May 7, 1926, the 5th of 14 children born to Walter and Mary (Aron) Liegel. She was raised with her 5 brothers and 8 sisters on the family farm outside of Plain, Wisconsin.
Although her parents did not see the need for girls to attend high school, Dorothy insisted, and was proud to graduate from St. Luke’s High School in Plain in 1944. She wanted to continue to nursing school at the Twin Cities, but her parents refused. Dorothy instilled in her own family the value of education and her children would pursue knowledge with passion.
The Greatest Generation included many unsung heroes who did not go abroad to fight but kept the home fires burning. The women of that era contributed to the war effort, and Dorothy did her part. After graduating from high school, she was employed in the chemistry lab at what was then the Badger Ordnance Works, producing war materials for use in WWII. Dorothy had to stay in the Baraboo area during the week and went back to the family farm only on weekends.
After the war, Dorothy started dating Florian Frank, who had returned to Plain after serving in Europe during the War. They married on September 17, 1946, at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Plain. Together they raised 12 children.
Dorothy and Florian owned and operated Biglow Cheese and Butter Company in Clyde, Wisconsin, from 1949 to 1989. She was an integral part of their cheese business as office manager/ bookkeeper/advisor of the business.
A product of the Depression, Dorothy became an expert seamstress making her own clothes. She would teach her children and many others in their community how to sew skillfully. She was a sewing leader for the local 4-H club and a member of the Clydette Homemaker Club.
An active volunteer in several organizations, Dorothy served as an officer on parish councils at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lone Rock and St. Malachy’s Catholic Church in Clyde. She was a member of the women’s auxiliary and volunteered as a poll worker during elections.
In addition to managing their business and family, Dorothy and Florian found time to travel extensively throughout Europe and North America.
Many fond memories will include Christmas time at the factory. We believe this to be Dorothy’s favorite time of year. Shopping, decorating, baking, and entertaining were all activities Dorothy loved to do. Her home would sparkle with the Christmas decorations and wonderful smells would come from the meals she prepared. The family made their way to Christmas Eve Mass at St. Malachy’s or Sacred Heart across the river. Afterward the factory would be filled with the laughter and conversation of her children, grandchildren, and some of the earlier great grandchildren. Her generosity was tremendous, and we all benefited from it in so many ways. They include her survivors: sons Joseph (Astrid) Frank, Mark (Eileen) Frank, Ted (Elaine) Frank, and Nick (Jodi) Frank; daughters Deborah Frank, Bonnie (Randy) Thompson, Sandra (Mark Dostal) Frank, and Susan (Bob) Ashton; son-in-law Pat Shelton (Diane); brother Jerry Liegel; and sisters Carol Meixelsperger, Mary Jane Hull (Leo), Liz Torgeson; 23 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her parents Walter and Mary Liegel; brothers Roy, Donald, Norman and Louis Liegel; sisters Evelyn Metcalf, Lorraine Urbanek, Irene Yanke, Lucy Dolan, Marcy Marklein; her beloved husband of 74 years, Florian Frank; and daughters Diane Shelton, Barbara Frank, Elizabeth Frank, and Josephine Frank.
Visitation will be held April 22, 2024, at 9:00 a.m. with funeral mass at 10:00 a.m., at St. John’s Catholic Church in Spring Green, Wisconsin. Burial to follow at St. Luke’s Cemetery, Plain, Wisconsin.
Sincere gratitude is owed to Agrace Hospice and Greenway Manor, whose professional staff treated Dorothy with dignity, competence, and compassion. They became a part of Dorothy’s very large family.

LaVonne "Bonnie" Eileen Louther - December 04, 1927 - February 27, 2024

Departed: 02/27/2024 (Spring Green)
Obituary Preview: LaVonne "Bonnie" Eileen Louther, 96, died quietly and comfortably on February 27, 2024, in Cottage Grove, WI surrounded by family. Bonnie was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
Bonnie was born in Galesburg, Illinois in 1927 to Edmond N. “Pumpee” and Frances D. (Mackin) Allen. She was the middle of three children. She loved her family dearly and had special bonds with her big brother, Joe, and little brother, Freddie. She often told stories of growing up in Illinois and Iowa during the Great Depression. Bonnie went to Iowa State where she met William "Bill" Paul Louther. They married in 1947, in a double wedding with her brother Joe and his bride, Rudy, in the back yard of the family home in Ames, IA. Bonnie and Bill started their family in Lansing MI, then in 1954 moved to Madison where they raised 9 rowdy, but exceptionally gifted children.
The family moved to Commonwealth Avenue in 1960 and Bonnie created a home where everyone was welcome. She made people feel like they were a part of the family. The first time you visited, Bonnie would wait on you like you were a special guest. By the second time you visited, you had become one of the family, you knew where the refrigerator was, and you were expected to help yourself. Bonnie was a mother not only to her children, but to many of their friends, several of whom called her “mom.” During many a raucous sleep over the kids might hear Bonnie shouting at the base of the stairs to stop roughhousing because “the chandelier was SWINGIN’!” This was their queue to cut it out. She put up with a lot of antics ,but remained selfless and put everyone else's needs above her own.
Bonnie was an active volunteer at Blessed Sacrament school in the rectory and ran the stage lights for the annual Variety Show “Encore.” She was creative and loved to paint in watercolor and oils when she had a spare minute or two, which was rare.
In 1971, Bonnie went back to school to get her AA degree and become an Administrative Assistant. She studied shorthand and typing at the kitchen after a long day of cooking and cleaning. Despite the numerous interruptions, she was a straight “A” student. She immediately got a job working at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Madison and soon became a fixture in the Administration department. She gathered a group of close friends, including Doc V, who would become part of the family fabric. Mom gathered good friends throughout her life and kept them.
Bonnie and Bill owned two restaurants in Madison - Murphy’s Nob Hill for 33 years and Paco’s on State Street for 25 years. Their lives revolved around these two businesses and all their children begrudgingly worked at one or both. In addition to raising 9 children, Bonnie was also bookkeeper for Murphy’s and hostess on occasion. There too, she developed life-long friendships from patrons and regulars.
In 1977 Bill sold the family home on Commonwealth. Bonnie and Bill moved the youngest three kids back into a small house next to Murphy’s restaurant, at “The Hill.” That house was the same house Bonnie and Bill raised 7 children in the mid 1950’s before moving to Commonwealth Ave. We couldn’t figure out how she raised 7 children between the ages of 1 to 13 in that small three-bedroom house, but somehow she did. Living next door to the restaurant had its ups and downs. She could be called away at any moment to hostess if someone didn’t show, but she enjoyed random and unexpected visits from previous staff, coworkers, and patrons. Often, after the restaurant closed Sunday afternoons, our family would gather to celebrate a birthday, holiday, or nothing in particular. Those were special days bringing together friends, boyfriends, girlfriends, and the odd person out for a chaotic, boisterous, and a loving meal. She always made room for one more.
Bonnie and Bill loved adventures and traveling. They took several trips to Europe and Bonnie practiced German phrases from a vinyl record while sitting at our extraordinarily long kitchen table. “Wo ist die katze? Es ist unter dem Bett” is a phrase we all remember her mastering, even though we didn’t have a cat at the time. Other travel adventures included driving across the country in a 1955 greyhound bus that Bill, his friends, and his sons remodeled to sleep 11 people, long before “bus living” was cool. Packed in like sardines, the boys would drive the family and its ski gear non-stop to Colorado’s Winter Park ski resort for winter or spring break. (How else are you going to travel with 9 kids plus their friends?) Bonnie made those trips special because she planned, shopped, cooked, and packed for everyone on these trips. She never loved those trips as much as her kids did, and now, as parents they know why.
After closing both restaurants, Bonnie and Bill moved from Madison to Minnesota in 1993 where they lived a quiet life on Lake Moran outside Park Rapids, MN surrounded by good friends and neighbors. Visiting them up in the “nort woods” was a slice of heaven. They were both relaxed and at peace there. Bonnie continued to paint and make crafts, then turned her attention to writing. She wrote stories for a local writer’s guild and helped publish numerous volumes of “The Talking Stick”, a collection of short stories written by the locals.
After Bill passed in 2001, Bonnie worked until she was 83 years old and lived alone. She cooked meals for visiting friends and family up until she was 90, ending the week with a tradition of cooking for a small group of family members, lovingly referred to as a “Another Perfect Sunday.” We will deeply miss her warm heart, home cooked meals, generous spirit, laughter, and wonderful sense of humor.
Bonnie AKA BonBon, Grandma, Tootie, G-Ma, or Nala Bali was beloved by all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her love of them ran deep. She was endlessly proud of all their accomplishments and reveled in their joys.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 53 years William Paul Louther, her parents, brothers Joseph Allen and Fred Allen, and 3 of her children: William "Casey" Paul Louther Jr. of Mount Horeb, Tamalynn Albrecht of Madison, and Toni Alisa (Casey) Cole, of Madison.
She is survived by her children: Debi (David) Haley of San Diego, CA, Scott Allen Louther of Middleton, WI, J. Michael (Linda) Louther of Apache Junction, AZ, Brian K. Louther and Cynthia Tahtinen of Middleton, WI, Mona Lynn (Kevin) Peirce of Madison, WI, and Marti Jo (Rik Adams) Louther of Seattle, WA; her Grandchildren: Cherri Haley, Shannon Haley, Sean Haley, Aaron Haley, Kira Keough, Whitney Louther, Toby Louther, Nicholas Louther, Brian Louther, Brittney Louther, Alisa Louther, Mitchell Louther, Katie Wilkins, Alec Albrecht, Taylor Albrecht, Gabe Albrecht, Austin Albrecht, Tyler Cole, and Nora Adams; and 23 (and counting) great-grandchildren.
The family would like to pay special thanks to Mona and Kevin Peirce who graciously opened their home and cared for Bonnie for over 5 years, and during the pandemic ‘ta boot. We cannot sufficiently express our gratitude for their generosity and love. Additional thanks to the caring and loving staff at Kindred Hearts – Cottage Grove and Agrace Hospice.

Dennis A. Dahl "The Opal Man" - March 22, 1946 - February 13, 2024

Departed: 02/13/2024 (Spring Green)
Obituary Preview: Dennis Arthur Dahl, “The Opal Man”, age 77, of Spring Green, passed away on Tuesday February 13th, 2024 under hospice care at Greenway Manor Nursing Home. He was born on March 22, 1946, the son of Robert and Evelyn (Herbig) Dahl in Rockford, IL.
Dennis was the oldest of three children by Bob and Evie Dahl. He was a quiet and supportive pillar in the family. He offered a unique perspective on life, sharing his faith and love of God with all. He was a patient teacher with a big heart. Just as with his opals he was able to see people’s beauty through the rough. He attended college in Rockford and, when called upon by his country, he faithfully served in the Army during the Vietnam War.
Dennis was a highly skilled opal cutter. After spending a year in Australia in 1969 working at an opal shop and learning to cut opal he began his opal business as a Master Opal Cutter and Opal Wholesaler in 1970. He sold his cut opals throughout the Midwest and beyond. Australia became Dennis’s second home as he regularly traveled to the opal mines, bringing home rough opal (boxes of rocks) to cut into beautiful opal cabochons highly sought after in the world of gems. Dennis began his business in Rockford, Illinois under the name of Harlequin Enterprises, renamed in 1973 to Midwest Gem Cutters. In 1975 he moved to Hanover, Illinois, and in 2001 another move to Spring Green, Wisconsin and a name change to The Opal Man. He expanded his business into the retail world in 2011 when he opened his all- opal jewelry store in Spring Green, WI housed in little stone gas station built in 1926 that looked like a bit like a gingerbread house. In Dennis’s own words, “It's a wonderful adventure, in a great little town, in a beautiful building, with fascinating opals and unique opal jewelry,” His business remains the only retail store dedicated to selling only opal and opal jewelry in North America. In 2019 he expanded his retail business and opened The Opal Man of Lake Geneva. Dennis found a sense of home in Lake Geneva where he opened his second store. He appreciated and felt blessed to have the wonderful customers of the city and his staff who he considered friends.
Dennis loved being an entrepreneur, he loved opals, but most of all he loved God. His highest goal was to follow Jesus wholeheartedly with every twist and turn of his life. He did this well in the world of opals and jewelry. He has many friends across the country (and the world) who remember Dennis as the “opal guy” who literally “walked” into their store, their mine, and their life with a backpack and message of God’s love for all. He was charming, humble, mysterious, and a drifter with purpose. One of Dennis’s all time favorite sayings was, “Opals are tiny windows through which we see the Kingdom of Heaven.” With each opal he cut at the wheel he saw a tiny bit of the Kingdom of Heaven and now through his faith in Jesus, he is dwelling in the Kingdom of Heaven. Survivors include, niece, Natalie Dahl, niece, Carrie (Jeannette) McBriar, niece, Kellie (Chad) Knutti, nephew, Travis Dahl, niece, Kim McBriar, nephew, Justin (Aliona) Dahl and niece, Kace Wagner. Included are many great nieces and nephews
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Evelyn Dahl, sister, Connie Wagner and brother, Douglas and sister-in-law, Jo Mary Dahl.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, February 18, 2024 at the Spring Green Community Church at 2:00 P.M. Rev. Kendall Harger will officiate with burial in the Willwood Cemetery in Rockford, IL at a later date. Visitation will be held on Sunday at the church from 12:30 P.M. until the time of service.

Departed: 02/03/2024 (Spring Green)
Obituary Preview: Phyllis Elaine (Hale) Feiner ascended to heaven on February 3, 2024. In just 43 days, she would have celebrated her 100th birthday. Born in Spring Green on March 16, 1924 to George Dewey Hale and Vera (Schroeder) Hale, she soon moved to Wisconsin Dells.
At the age of 7, she and her sister, Lorayne, entertained during the depression as the Hale Sisters. They tap danced, sang, played Hawaiian guitars, and performed acrobatics at the Chula Vista Resort in Wisconsin Dells and the surrounding area. They sang on live radio broadcasts from Portage. Their act prompted an offer from a talent scout to move to California for a chance at national fame, but they chose to remain in Wisconsin. They eventually performed in a dance band.
Phyllis graduated from Reedsburg High School in 1942 and worked on the rocket line at The Badger Ordinance Works until WWII ended. She married Felix Joseph Feiner in 1946 and they took over the family farm on Horseshoe Road just North of Spring Green and raised eight children. The octagon barn on the farm was restored and is now hosting weddings and other events. When Felix retired from farming, they moved into the village of Spring Green. As a member of St. John’s Catholic Church, Phyllis sang in the choir for many years, was in the Women’s Auxiliary, volunteered to supervise students during recess at St. John’s School, and helped out at the local library. She also served as secretary of the local chapter of the National Farmer’s Organization. Her passion for birds lead to work with Bluebird preservation and her gardening skills beautified both the farm and her home in Spring Green where she hosted a yearly garden party for her many friends and relatives.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her sister, Lorayne (Hale) Holtz, husband Felix, and daughters Barbara Van Slyke and Patricia McDougal.
She is survived by 6 children; John (Marla) Feiner, Victoria (Kenneth) Horn, Doug (Jayne Schwartz) Feiner, Judi Feiner, Georgia Reynolds, and Mary Jo Abell; 11 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
