Cecelia "Ann" Heistuman - March 15, 1934 - March 12, 2024

Departed: 03/12/2024 (Pomeroy)
Obituary Preview: Ann (Schultheis) Heitstuman, 89, died peacefully at Riverview Memory Care in Spokane, on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, — just three days shy of her 90th birthday. Born March 15, 1934, in Uniontown to Jacob and Frances (Haupt) Schultheis, she was the second of five children. She grew up on the farm where there was a lot of hard work but also fun. After attending Catholic School in Uniontown for 11 years, she graduated from Notre Dame Academy in Colton in 1952 as the school in Uniontown had closed. In 1955, Ann graduated from Sacred Heart School of Nursing in Spokane and worked there until she married. She then worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Lewiston, and at the Garfield County Memorial Hospital in Pomeroy. She married Bob Heitstuman on June 16, 1956, in Uniontown. They lived in the Clarkston Silcott area for 2½ years after their marriage and then moved to the farm they purchased on Howell Grade in Pomeroy. After purchasing the farm, Ann stayed home to help on the farm and raise their four daughters. They farmed there until their retirement in 1987 when they moved into town. Bob passed away Aug. 16, 2020.
Ann loved her God, her husband, and her family and friends whole heartedly, and lived and loved life to the fullest. She was not one to complain and had a “can-do” attitude. Among her passions were reading, especially murder mysteries and medical dramas, watching sports on TV or listening on the radio and she loved playing cards — especially weekly bridge and pinochle games. She was well-versed on world affairs and local politics and never hesitated to write a letter to the editor or call or write state or national representatives on issues she felt strongly about. She also loved good country music.
Ann said hello to everyone, much to the surprise of strangers on occasion. She was a great cook and loved to bake. The entire family would gather many times throughout the year (a favorite was the annual sausage-making weekend) and there was never a shortage of good food. She always had a fabulous vegetable garden that she loved to share with family and friends. She grew beautiful flowers and especially loved roses and gladiolas and usually had several vases of flowers in her home.
She was a devout Catholic and communicant of the Holy Rosary Catholic Parish and active member of the parish and Altar Society until her move to Spokane in 2020. She was a charter member of the Spade Swingers Garden Club, on the Community Action team, served on the hospital board and was an advocate for the facility and otherwise active in community affairs. In 1975, she was chosen Citizen of the Year in Pomeroy. She was the interim administrator at Garfield County Hospital while a search was going on for a permanent administrator and was Emergency Management Director for a time. Ann volunteered countless hours to projects around town and at church. She was extremely generous to her family, friends and community.
Ann is survived by four daughters: Cheryl (Pat) Wallace, Carole (Michael) Gauche, Christy Heitstuman, all of Spokane, and Connie (Dave) Goude of Walla Walla; five grandchildren: Michelle (Paul), Jeff, Jessica, Jacob (Natalie) and Ryan; four great-grandchildren: Jenna, Jackson, Wyatt and Simon; sister, Lela Sergi, sisters-in-law Karen Schultheis, Edna Mae Schultheis, Joan Landrus, Shirley Heitstuman and Sherryl Heitstuman and many extended family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, brothers Carroll and Leigh Schultheis, and sister Myrna Schimmels.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 6, at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Pomeroy, with a Rosary recited before the Mass at 10:30 a.m. Her final resting place will be at the Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery with Bob. A dinner will follow at the Catholic school. Ann loved color so feel free to wear something colorful.
The family would like to extend their thanks to the staff of Riverview Memory Care for their care and kindness to Mom the last year and a half.
Memorials may be made to the Holy Rosary Parish Preservation Fund, Morning Star Boys Ranch, Monastery of St. Gertrude, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Louise Munday - March 14, 1923 - March 03, 2024

Departed: 03/03/2024 (Pomeroy)
Obituary Preview: Louise Munday died Sunday, March 3, 2024, at Garfield County Memorial Hospital in Pomeroy, just 11 days shy of her 101st birthday.
Louise was born Marianna Louisa Schuelke on March 14, 1923, to Albert and Gertrude Purcell Schuelke, at Schuelke farm up Rickman Gluch. She attended the first five grades of school at Pataha, grades six through eight at Holy Rosary Catholic School and high school at Pomeroy High School, graduating in 1941. She was the last surviving member of the class of 1941.
After graduating from high school she borrowed $100 dollars from her grandmother to pay tuition at St. Ignatius hospital nursing school in Colfax. Her nurse’s training was delayed when her brother, John, was taken prisoner of war in the Pacific in 1942. She was heart broken and dropped out of school for six months before returning. She eventually finished her nursing training at Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane in 1946.
While a student at St. Ignatius in Colfax, she met a young man who worked for farmers in the area. Howard Munday was a patient in the hospital with a broken leg. She thought him “an obnoxious flirt” and was glad when he was released. They eventually ran into each other in downtown Colfax and soon began dating. They were married Nov. 8, 1947, and shared 41 years together before Howard passed away May 25, 1988.
They built a house in Colfax and Louise worked at St. Ignatius for nine and a half years. In 1955, Louise and Howard moved to Pomeroy to help care for her ailing father and she went to work at the Pomeroy hospital. During her Pomeroy nursing career she worked for Dr. Weiland and Dr. Bond, then Dr. Weiland and Dr. Herron. She worked in the medical office of Dr. R. J. Weiland Sr. for a total of 33 years. Her nursing career spanned a total of 46 years.
Louise’s life was one of service to her community. She was honored as Retired Senior Volunteer Program volunteer of the year for Washington state in 2001. She served many years on the Garfield County Human Services Board; one of the founders of the local food bank; active in the Daughters of the Pioneers; Garfield County Pioneer Association, being the Honored Pioneer in 2002. She served on the Board of Commissioners of the Garfield County Hospital District and was a very active member of the Area Aging and Long Term Care Board. She was instrumental in the beginning and was a very active member of the Garfield County Senior Citizens Center. She played pinochle at the center just three days before she died, and legend has it that she was a cut-throat pinochle player. She supported the youth of Garfield County by buying animals from 4-H and FFA projects at the Garfield County Fair for many years.
Her greatest legacy was becoming guardian to neighbor Garth and Helen Bull’s two adult children (Garth Jr. and Judy Ann) who had disabilities from birth, after their parents passed away. Louise moved into the Bull home and cared for Garth and Judy until their passing, Garth in 2006 and Judy in 2011.
Louise was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Howard; her brother John, who died as a Japanese Prisoner of War in 1944; and foster children Garth Bull Jr. and Judy Ann Bull. She is survived by many nieces and nephews and more friends than one can imagine. Proof of that was her 100th birthday party, which was attended by a standing-room-only crowd of over 300 people.
Louise was a lifelong member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Pomeroy. Rosary service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 13, at the church at 634 High St., Pomeroy, and a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 14 (her 101st birthday). A party had been planned but now it will be a celebration of an extraordinary life. Her ashes will be buried at the Pomeroy Cemetery with Howard. A dinner will follow at the Catholic school.
Memorials may be sent to the Garfield County Senior Citizens Center, P.O. Box 23, Pomeroy, WA 99347, or the Garfield County Food Bank, P.O. Box 15, Pomeroy, WA 99347.

John Lawrence Stephens - January 31, 1927 - February 21, 2024

Departed: 02/21/2024 (Pomeroy)
Obituary Preview: John Lawrence Stephens was born in the Pahsimeroi Valley of Idaho on Jan. 31, 1927. His parents, John William and Ellen Irene Stephens (nee Fogarty) homesteaded in view of Mount Borah. That place was beloved of John. However, at thirteen, he left to attend high school.
John was drafted by the U.S. Army near the end of World War II and trained as a scout. After the war, he went to Panama as a medical supply sergeant.
John attended Washington State College (now Washington State University) in Pullman, where he met Dorothy Evelyn Branch, the love of his life. Their “story” reads like a movie script.
John received a degree in mechanical engineering and worked for Allis-Chalmers in Milwaukee and Stearns-Roger in Denver before going oversees to Saudi Arabia to work for the Trans-Arabian Pipeline Company, and later the Arabian-American Oil Company. He designed compressors, pump stations and power plants. John and Evelyn traveled the world with their four children: Ken Putnam, Lynn Stephens, Joanne Stephens (Pederson) and John D. Stephens.
After ten years overseas, the family returned to the USA. John received his master’s degree at WSU and became Facilities Engineer at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Ore. Upon retiring, John started his consulting business — Delta Engineering Services.
John and Evelyn thoroughly enjoyed Corvallis. They were active in Shepherd of the Valley Missouri Synod Lutheran Church. John was longtime treasurer of the Corvallis Rotary Club. John also enjoyed playing bridge, participating in Cycle Oregon and writing his book of memoirs. He was fond of cats, dogs and horses. He enjoyed walking. He was a pun-master. He also loved all babies and kids. His biggest smiles were for them, especially for his numerous great-grandchildren.
He generously provided the extended family with adventures: camping at Wallowa, Ore., a houseboat trip on Lake Roosevelt, horseback riding at Stehekin, ocean fishing....
When nearly ninety, John weathered a laryngectomy, even though he had diabetes and kidney disease. He learned to talk with a “buzzer” but, with a grin and a glint in his eye, he would “buzz-buzz” to say hello, thank you, good job, or just hey you.
John and Evelyn moved to Spokane Valley, and then to Pomeroy to be near family. In August of 2023, the family helped John and Evelyn celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary.
John was 97 when he died at Garfield County Hospital in Pomeroy on Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2024.
John was greatly loved by many and will be sorely missed.
There will be a memorial at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 2, at Richardson-Brown Funeral Home, 750 Columbia St., Pomeroy, and military honors will take place at noon Tuesday, March 5, at the Wenatchee Cemetery. We suggest donations to John’s favorite charity, the Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch.

Thrion Phillip Crawford - Unknown - April 21, 2023

Departed: 04/21/2023 (Pomeroy)
Obituary Preview: Thiron Phillip “Phil” Crawford passed away Friday, April 21, 2023.
A lifelong resident of Garfield County, Phil was born July 20, 1930, to Thiron R. and Hazel B. Crawford.
Phil was raised on the family farm where he and his siblings would, at times, try their parents’ patience. One cold morning, Phil and his brother Lloyd decided that it would be a good idea to heat up the outhouse toilet seat. Fortunately, they got the fire out before it did any real damage. Also, one time when his parents went into town, they were told not to saddle up the horses. They did follow their dad’s request and saddled up a cow instead.
Phil attended a one-room schoolhouse before he attended Pomeroy High School. Phil had a four-year boxing career, one year as captain, with Hazel Tefft being his biggest cheerleader. Phil graduated in 1948 and was the last living member of his class.
Phil and Hazel were married on May 1, 1949.
Phil worked as a farmhand for Aubrey Slaybaugh and then at Al Obenland appliance store. He then went to work for his best friend Kenny Price at the Price Hereford ranch.
In 1956 he began his 39-year career at the Pomeroy Grange Supply, first as a bookkeeper and then as manager, until he retired in 1994. He then worked part-time for Gary Houser until 2010. Phil and Hazel traveled many places during their 72 years of marriage. They enjoyed Alaskan and Caribbean cruises, traveled to Hawaii, to Nashville, and several other cities in the United States. Their ultimate trip was to the east coast to visit Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C., and the New England states. They also took their three daughters on a vacation every year. As his wife said many times, “your dad was a good provider.”
Phil had a lifelong dream of owning a cabin in the mountains. He purchased a cabin at Stentz Spring which was the gathering spot for many family reunions. Even after he sold the cabin to Simon Crawford, the family continued to hold yearly reunions.
Phil was active in the community serving on the city council and as a volunteer firefighter.
Phil was a member of the Pomeroy United Methodist Church, Pleasant Grove Grange, Harmony Lodge 16 and Faith Rebecca Lodge 16.
Phil is survived by his daughters Phyllis Sweeney, Kathleen Dung and Nancy Crawford; grandchildren Jim Sweeney (Teresa), Aaron Sweeney (Ildi), Jeremiah Dung (Devan Warr), Adam Mauhar and Katelyn Mauhar (Matt Liasjo); great-grandchildren Devin Sweeney, Ali Schwanke, Lillian Dung and Maverick Liasjo; siblings Eleanor Bingman, John Crawford and Ed Crawford (Jackie), and numerous nieces, nephews and many friends.
Phil was preceded in death by his loving wife Hazel, his parents, and siblings Evelyn Morris, Lloyd Crawford and Jim Crawford.
The family would like to thank the staff of Memory Manor for all of the love, care and concern that they gave Phil during his time there. Also, the love and support they have given the family during this difficult time.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday, July 8, with the interment at 1:15 p.m., at the Pomeroy City Cemetery, followed by the service at 2 p.m. at the Pomeroy United Methodist Church.
Memorials may be sent to the Pomeroy United Methodist Church, the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.

Carl Henry Wade - October 02, 1957 - January 02, 2023

Departed: 01/02/2023 (Pomeroy)
Obituary Preview: Carl Henry Wade, named in honor of both of his grandpas, was born Oct. 2, 1957, in Pomeroy to Cecil Wade and Beverly Smith Wade. Carl passed away surrounded by his family Monday, Jan. 2, 2023, at Deaconess Hospital in Spokane because of interstitial lung disease at the age of 65.
Carl was a lifelong resident of Pomeroy, graduating from Pomeroy High School in 1976. Carl married Kim Capwell on Sept. 10, 1977, recently celebrating 45 years of marriage. Carl and Kim were blessed with three sons, Jeff, Michael and Andrew.
At an early age, Carl worked for various farmers and also worked for a short time at General Tractor and Implement in Pomeroy. Carl began his career at Dye Seed Ranch in 1978, where he was the mill supervisor and seed lab tech — he was a dedicated employee of Dye’s for 44 years.
Carl’s favorite season was hunting season, something he looked forward to every year. From a young age, he immensely enjoyed hunting with his dad and other family members, to later in life when he hunted with his sons and friends. He loved everything about that time of year: the preparation, the time spent with family and friends, and getting a deer or elk was an added bonus. Carl was lucky enough to draw multiple quality bull tags and harvested two trophy Blue Mountain bulls, which were memorable experiences for him. Fishing and camping with family were some of his favorite pastimes. Carl was a Dale Earnhardt Jr. fan and enjoyed watching the NASCAR races.
For 20 years, Carl was a volunteer firefighter and a first responder with the Garfield County Fire Department. Carl began working with the Pomeroy Junior Gun Club when his boys began shooting and continued with the program for many years even though his sons were no longer participating in the program. He enjoyed trapshooting and one of his special memories of that time was when he was on a shooting squad with four other friends and each of them shot straight 25s with none of them missing a target in the round.
In February of 2018 Carl, became a grandpa to Greyson Alexander Wade and his life was filled with joy. There was no better time spent than time spent with Greyson.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Beverly, and his grandparents Henry and Rena Wade, Carl and Marie Smith, Bernice and Ray Pence. He is survived by his wife, Kim; sons Jeff, Michael and Andrew (Amanda); grandson Greyson, all of Pomeroy; sisters Connie (Duane) Larson, of Potlatch, Debbie Taylor, of Potlatch and Tami (Kaare) Norland, of Clarkston, sister-in-law Colleen Capwell, of Spokane, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Clark and Lillian Capwell, of Colfax.
Carl was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and will be deeply missed.
Memorial donations may be made to Shriners Hospital c/o Bob Cox, P.O. Box 545, Pomeroy, WA 99347; or Pomeroy Junior Gun Club, c/o Ken Bott, 389 15th St., Pomeroy, WA 99347.
A memorial service for Carl will be held at a later date in the Blue Mountains.
Richardson-Brown Funeral Home of Pomeroy is in charge of arrangements.

Obituary Preview: John R. Henry, beloved husband of almost 51 years, father and lifelong civil servant, passed away Sunday, Dec. 18, 2022, at 71 years old after a short but courageous battle with brain cancer. John was born in Coulee Dam to Ted and Sivilla Henry.
His youth was spent moving around central and eastern Washington with his family while his father worked construction on the Columbia and Snake river dams. When John was 15, the family settled in Pomeroy where he met the love of his life, Eileen McCabe. He was an accomplished athlete in football, basketball and baseball, earning a scholarship to play football at Whitman College in Walla Walla. He eventually transferred to Washington State University to be with Eileen. They married in 1972 in Pomeroy.
John took a job with the Idaho State Patrol and he and Eileen moved to Boise, where they stayed until John was hired by the Spokane Police Department. John practiced law in Spokane with his older brother, Robert Henry, before relocating to Pomeroy to join in practice with Rich Burns at Burns and Henry. He was appointed District Court Judge for Garfield County in 2009 and he stayed in that role until his retirement in 2017.
