Queen E. Carson - June 09, 1941 - January 15, 2024

Departed: 01/15/2024 (Anderson)
Obituary Preview: Queen Ester Foye Carson was called home to glory while at Long Island Jewish Hospital in Nassau County, New York on Monday, January 15, 2024 after battling COPD for several years.  She also had a white blood cell disorder, for which she underwent chemotherapy for a few years.  She also required frequent blood transfusions which was quite tiresome.  In addition to these ailments, she contracted COVID-19 twice, Norovirus, several infections, more recently the RSV virus and had damage to the liver and kidneys.  In spite of all these obstacles, she still managed to maintain a positive outlook.
Queen was born on June 9, 1941 in Jones County, North Carolina to the late Alvis and Mary Sue Gooding Foye.  She was the 6th and youngest child from this union.
After graduating from Adkin High School in Kinston, NC in 1960, she traveled to New York, where she met her future husband, Claude Carson.  They were married on December 19, 1965 until his passing on December 21, 2019.
"Queenie or Miss Queen", as she was affectionately known to friends and family, was a devoted wife to husband, Claude of 54 years, loving mother, doting grandmother, loyal friend and committed woman of God with a selfless heart.  She had a flair for style, was an excellent cook and a fantastic baker.  She was smart, kind, funny and ever so willing to impart knowledge and offer friendly advice.  She was a straight shooter and didn't hold back.
In the late 1960's and early 1970's Queenie worked at various companies such as law firms and insurance companies.  In 1971 she landed employment with Columbia Broadcasting Systems (CBS Television).  There she worked in Payroll Department for nearly 30 years, until her retirement in 1999.
Queenie and Claude enjoyed cruising and traveling, particularly to the Caribbean Islands and Mexico to serene waters and sandy beaches, as well as various states.  Queenie and Claude relocated to Durham, North Carolina in 2011 and then to Bear, Delaware for a few years.  Missing their home turf so much, they returned to Queens, New York in 2017.  Queenie was a dedicated member of Macedonia AME Church in Jamaica, New York (originally located in Flushing, New York), where she served on the Stewardess Board.  Even with declining health, she would still manage to make it to church services and eventually mastered the virtual process.
Queenie was preceded in death by parents Alvis and Mary Sue Gooding Foye, husband Claude Carson, brothers Alvis, James, George, Johnny Foye and sister Tessie Foye Dawson.
She leaves to cherish her memory: daughter Kathleen Constant, granddaughter Kimberly Wright, two sisters-in-law: Brenda (Jimmy) Ellis, Patricia Carson, two brothers-in-law: Marion (Doris) Carson and E.J. Carson, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It may also include information about their surviving family members, funeral or memorial services, and any charitable organizations to which donations can be made in their memory.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a sense of closure and help to celebrate the life of the deceased.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. In some cases, a friend or colleague may also write an obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral or memorial services, burial arrangements, and any charitable organizations to which donations can be made in their memory.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the wishes of the family. Typically, it ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the notice and make it more meaningful.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online publication?

The process for submitting an obituary varies depending on the publication. You can usually find guidelines on the publication's website or by contacting them directly. Be sure to check their deadlines and fees for publishing the obituary.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, its circulation, and the length of the notice. Some publications may offer free or low-cost options, while others may charge several hundred dollars.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance, often as part of their estate planning or as a way to reflect on their life. This can be a unique opportunity to tell your own story and leave a lasting legacy.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, typically including only basic information such as their name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed notice that provides additional information about the person's life.

Can I include humor or personal anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary is a celebration of the person's life, so feel free to include stories or jokes that capture their personality and spirit.

What if I need to make corrections to an already-published obituary?

Contact the publication immediately if you need to make corrections. They will work with you to correct the error and republish the revised obituary.

Can I create an online memorial or tribute page instead of an obituary?

The length of time an online obituary remains available varies depending on the publication or platform. Some may keep them active for months or years, while others may archive them after a shorter period.
