David Christopher Braswell - June 02, 1931 - April 22, 2022

Departed: 04/22/2022 (North Wilkesboro)
Obituary Preview: David Christopher Braswell   June 2, 1931 - April 22, 2022,               Wilkesboro, North Carolina
David Christopher Braswell, age 90, of Wilkesboro, North Carolina passed away at home, resting in the love of his family.
Born in Montezuma, North Carolina in 1931, he was the second son of Linville Lafayette Braswell and Hettie Jane Anderson. After his father’s premature death, David and his brother Dan were sent to live at the Masonic Home for Children, Oxford Orphanage in Oxford North Carolina.  At Oxford, David learned many important life skills and made lifelong friends.  He thrived and excelled in both school and sports and earned the rank of Eagle Scout. As a child he sang in the Oxford Orphanage traveling choir.  After graduating from John Nichols High School in 1949 he joined the Masonic Lodge and founded his first company, Braswell Chain Saw Company in Cheraw, SC, evolving into a distributorship of parts.  In 1959 he moved the business to Charlotte, NC and renamed it Specialty Welding Company, becoming a prominent parts and accessory distributor.  In 1981 he changed the name to Sunbelt Outdoor Products, Inc., and distributed parts for all makes of outdoor power equipment, rapidly growing throughout the US.  In 2000, he sold Sunbelt to Deere & Company. David married Anne Griffin Howell in 1960 and started a family in Charlotte, North Carolina.  David was a certified pilot, flying his own Cessna to his beach home in Ocean Isle, NC and visiting family members.  He loved big game hunting and was an avid golfer, often playing 36 holes with his friends. After he sold his business, he turned his attention to winemaking and started the process with his wife to establish a vineyard, Uwharrie Vineyards, in Albemarle, NC.  After Anne passed away from a long battle with cancer, he reconnected with widow, Bettie Evans Wyke, a fellow classmate of Oxford Orphanage and John Nichols High School.  David and Bettie married in September 2004 and they made their home in Wilkesboro, NC where he quickly became involved in First Baptist Church of North Wilkesboro, Lions Club, the Lunch Buddy and Backpack Buddy Programs.  He was both physically active and socially engaged in the Wilkes community until a series of strokes robbed him of his mobility. David was a member of many organizations and held positions of leadership throughout his life, among them, Director of the Royal Order of Jesters and President of the Wilkes Lions Club.  He has remained continually active in the Alumni Association for Oxford Orphanage, participating in many fundraising events, an active Oasis Shriner for 63 years, a Master Mason and a member of the Royal Order of Jesters. Highly competitive and driven to succeed, David made many lifelong close friends, and his smile was so brilliant and infectious it could transform a room. His personal life brings to mind a quote from Robert Louis Stevenson, “The man is a success who has lived well, loved much, and laughed often.”
David is survived by his wife, Bettie Wyke Braswell, sons Chris Braswell, MD, of Mobile, AL, Fred (Janet) Braswell and his daughter, Anne Braswell, of Charlotte, NC, stepdaughters Sandra (Matt) Couch of Hilton Head Island, SC, Valerie (Nelson) Granade of Statesville, NC, stepson, Allen Wyke, of Traphill, NC, stepson in law, Greg (Michelle) Dancho of Clemmons, NC, and half-sister, Helen Jenkins of Clinton, TN.  David is survived by grandchildren, Mason (Ally), Madison Braswell and David Gray, Callie, Carson and Christopher, step grandchildren, Bryant (RJ), Emily, JD, Noah, Alex, Jaclyn, and Nicholas, along with many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, first wife, Anne, brothers, Dan and Mike Braswell, half-brothers Jackie and Doug Williams and stepdaughter, Evelyn Dancho.
A very special thank you to the wonderful caregivers of Wilkes Home Instead and Wake Forest Baptist Health Care at Home Hospice who provided exceptional home care for David, and to Bettie’s brother, Jerry Evans, who visited daily helping Bettie and David in so many special ways.

His much-cherished grandchildren know him as Pop and they remember he was quite the doting grandfather.  Pop always had a laugh ready for them with his sharp-witted pragmatism.
After Millers Creek High School, a business degree from King’s College and service in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Beltrami, Blaine had a career with Southern Railway, Charlotte Freight and then twenty-three years at Lowe’s Companies where he worked in Store Operations and the Homestead Department.
Blaine and Wanda were a devoted couple and celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary earlier this month.  Beyond his wife, family and faith, he also loved his bluegrass roots and was a talented banjo, guitar and mandolin player.  Blaine was picking and grinning at an early age in a traveling band during high school for “pocket change” he would often say. Blaine also loved Ashe County and the New River where he enjoyed many boyhood memories he could vividly recount.  Blaine was generous with his time as a skilled do-it-yourself man and Jack of all trades.  His family cherishes his memory and recalls 2 Timothy 4:7, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”

James Thomas Eller - September 24, 1976 - April 08, 2022

Departed: 04/08/2022 (North Wilkesboro)
Obituary Preview: James Thomas Eller, born September 24, 1976, departed this life on 04/08/2022.  He was born to Jack and Janice Eller in Wilkes County, North Carolina.  He graduated from Wilkes Central High School.
His lifelong dream was to open and operate his own business.  He accomplished this dream with the opening of Jack’s Sons Seafood Restaurant on April 18, 2020, during the height of the Covid Pandemic.  He worked tirelessly toward building his successful business while sacrificing his time, resources, and unlimited hours of hard work in the process. He generously gave to the community by feeding doctors, nurses, CNA’s, Registered Nurses, and other essential workers during the pandemic.  Jamie never turned anyone away if they had no means of paying.
Jamie was also a “hero” to his circle of family, friends and his peers.  He was always providing words of encouragement and was considered a mentor when approached about difficult times in their lives.
He was married to Izchel Eller on October 20, 2005.  After 11 years of trying to add to their family, their miracle child, Elaine, was born.  Thirteen months later, along came JJ.
Jamie was a loving husband, father, brother, nephew, uncle, cousin and friend.  His wife and children were the joy of his life. He was the most loving, caring, and giving husband.  He would bring breakfast in bed, put flowers in her car, and made sure Izchel was enticed with plenty of food and chocolate. There was nothing that he would not do for her or the family.  The word “spoiled” had no meaning to Jamie as he showered his children with all the love and affection possible.  He was a member of New Damascus Baptist Church in Wilkesboro, NC.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved Elaine.  He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Izchel, his son JJ, his sister, Lena (John) Ellis, of North Wilkesboro; his brother Gene (Flo) Eller of Wilkesboro;  his sister-in law, Valery (Ambiorix) Guevara, Wilkesboro; his father and mother  in law, Marco and Rubi Martinez, his aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Departed: 04/03/2022 (North Wilkesboro)
Obituary Preview: Delores Kate Foster Horton February 24, 1940-April 3, 2022
Delores Horton was born at home in Millers Creek to Jim (Walter James) Foster and Vergie Esta (Dillard) Foster in 1940.  She was the second of 4 daughters to delight Jim and Vergie, falling between her big sister Chris(tine) and her little sisters Gayle and Teresa.  Her dad taught her to wield a hammer and fix things while her mother taught her to run a sewing machine.  She had a wonderfully rounded skill set and wasn’t afraid to tackle any project, big or small.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, April 16, 2022 at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with Chaplain Mark Brown officiating.  Burial will be in Scenic Memorial Gardens.  The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 2:00 PM prior to the service at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.
Delores, or ‘Doe’ as she came to be known, is preceded in death by her parents and by her late husband, William Donald (Bucky) Horton.  She was also proceeded by a special friend, Tommy Hayes, who she met in 1st grade and who she became especially close to about 10 years ago.  She is survived by her three children, Donna Horton-Berry (Elizabeth) of East Bend, NC, Diane Horton Galloway (Scott) of boomer, NC, and William Donald (Bill) Horton, of Liberty SC; her bonus child John Brown (Shirley) of Millers Creek; 5 grandchildren, William Allen Horton, Trent (Samantha Kate) Cleary of Raleigh, NC, Ellen Dayton (Jimmy) of Garner, NC, William Donald (Will) Horton III of Liberty SC, and Hanna Horton of Columbia/Liberty, SC; her three sisters, Chris Myers of Winston Salem, Gayle Foster of Wilkesboro, and Teresa (Dale) Broyhill of Wilkesboro; along with several nieces and nephews, dozens of cousins, hundreds of friends, thousands of acquaintances, and millions of fans.  Doe believed in long-term relationships and she held many, many people close to her heart every day.
Doe had many loves and interests in her life but none were greater than her love for her children and grandchildren.  She was born a nurturer and she made sure that her kids (or her ‘bunnies’ as she liked to call them) were surrounded by joy and laughter.  She took a great interest in the activities of her bunnies and attended thousands of ballgames and dance competitions over the years where she was a loyal cheerleader.
Besides her kids and grandkids Doe enjoyed spending time with her family and had some exciting adventures with them.  She loved to entertain as much as she loved to be entertained.  She was an outdoor lover who loved to play in a creek as much as she loved anything.  She enjoyed canoe trips down the New River with her sisters friends and the Blue Ridge Parkway was one of her favorite places.  Visiting the ocean, ANY ocean, was a delight for her and she took everyone she traveled with for long walks on beaches looking for seashells.  Doe and her sisters and friends enjoyed sitting on each other’s decks watching birds and telling stories…most of which were true.
Doe was born on her parents farm and she kept a love for gardening and landscaping throughout her life.  She taught her children to grow things and helped them learn to love creeks and birds.  She had some great adventures in her life and did a lot of traveling which she loved.  She had some hardships, too.  Her husband Bucky developed kidney failure and she helped him battle his disease for 10 years before he passed away in 1990.  She was a survivor of stage 3 breast cancer who managed to smile and enjoy visits with friends and family throughout her extensive surgery and treatment.  She became a resource for many women needing support through their own cancer journey and was eager to talk them through the bad times.  She was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease almost 7 years ago and maintained her charm and wit throughout the disease.  She never stopped telling stories and enjoying her family and friends throughout her last years.  She traveled to the mountains and the oceans several times and even went to the Grand Canyon 3 years ago to walk on the glass Sky Bridge.  COVID happened around the same time that she began needing help in her home and she chose to move in with her daughter Donna to quarantine.  She lived with Donna and Elizabeth for a little over 2 years and continued to visit with friends and family as vaccines became available and the world felt a little safer.  She received excellent care and support in the home from Jenni Norman and the whole family will always be grateful for her.  She passed away peacefully at their home.
Flowers will be accepted or donations can be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care or the Parkinson’s Foundation.
