John A. Cihon - January 14, 1944 - April 06, 2024

Departed: 04/06/2024 (North Canton)
Obituary Preview: John "Jake" Cihon, 80, of North Canton, Ohio, passed away at his home on April 6.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Susan (Welling); his son, Michael; daughter-in-law, Stephanie; granddaughter, Emily; daughter, Jennifer; son-in-law, Thomas King; sisters Judi Adams and Frances Cihon; brothers Patrick and James Cihon; and numerous friends and neighbors whose support to Jake's family has been invaluable during this difficult time. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Marian (Kaiser) Cihon, his brother, Thomas Cihon, and his sister, Mary Catherine Pace.
Jake grew up in New Philadelphia, Ohio, and graduated in from St. Joseph's High School in Dover in 1962. He graduated from The Ohio State University in 1968 with a degree in ceramic engineering. He liked to tell stories of his days at OSU, where he formed the "Chicken Little Society" (described ironically as an "anti-fraternity" fraternity), and lived in the dormitory in Ohio Stadium. Jake returned to "The Shoe" countless times during his lifetime as a season ticket holder and staunch supporter of the Buckeyes. He loved to get up at the crack of dawn to drive to Columbus, watch the pre-game skull session, and (hopefully) celebrate the win with a meal at his old haunt, the Red Door.
Jake and family lived in Michigan and Pennsylvania before settling in North Canton in 1981. Jake worked at several companies over the years, ending up as the Director of Business Development at MPW Industrial Services, from which he retired in 2012.
Jake had an incredible work ethic, and after his retirement, he channelled his energy into community activities. He was a devout Catholic and a faithful member of Christ the Servant Parish in Canton. Jake believed that the Catholic church, as well as the world, should be a welcoming and accepting place for everyone. Jake operated with a strong sense of justice and championed those in need. He volunteered on the Catholic Interracial Council, Hope Outreach Ministries, and was a board member of ABCD, Inc., which works to provide affordable housing to those in our community. He also was active in several other community organizations that were important to him, including Christ the Servant food ministry, Pax Christi of Stark County, the Interfaith Violence Prevention Coalition, the NAACP, and the Canton McKinley Booster Club.
Anyone who met Jake knew that he was a lifelong, unapologetic member of the Democratic Party. He ran for Congress in 1970, and although he lost that election, he never lost his interest in politics and remained active in the Stark County Democratic Party. Jake was not afraid to share his many political views, but those opinions were always motivated by his sense of justice and his optimistic belief that politics can be used to effectuate positive change in the world.
While we are devastated at his unexpected passing, we are comforted by the fact that Jake was a happy person who lived an honest and dignified life, full of faith and purpose to better the lives of those around him. Although he has passed, he will live forever in the hearts of his family and friends and those in the community who he was able to help.
