Obituary Preview: Thomas W. Preston, of Geneseo, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 11, 2024 at his residence, succumbing to complications of COPD and Congestive Heart Failure (CHF). He was 77.
Tom was predeceased by his parents, Warren "Smoke" and Lois Preston. He is survived by his wife, Donna Caffrey Preston, children, Tommy Preston II of Geneseo, Carrie (Eric) Falls, grandsons, Zachary, Jacob and Lucas Falls all of Duxbury, MA, brother, James (Eileen) Preston of Livonia, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Tom was born November 11, 1946 in Warsaw, NY the son Warren A. and Lois Brown Preston. He was a graduate of Livonia Central School and went on to earn his Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration and Accounting from the University of Kentucky. Tom was the Business Administrator at Geneseo Central School and after 12 years at GCS, he was hired by both Geneseo and Livonia Central School Districts. Tom was one of the first high level school administrators in the state to be shared by two different districts at the same time. Tom retired from Geneseo Central School in February of 2003. He was an active member of Livingston Country Club in Geneseo for many years.
Tom was known for his love of all sports. He was a die-hard Kentucky Wildcats fan, his loyalty to the team unwavering throughout his life. His enthusiasm for sports and his spirited cheers for the Wildcats brought joy to fellow fans and friends alike. In recent years he has loved following and attending his grandsons many sporting events.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday, May 19, 2024 from 1-4 PM at the Rector-Hicks Funeral Home, 111 Main St. in Geneseo. A Celebration of Tom's Life will follow, 4-6 PM at the Valley Oak Event Center, 4242 Lakeville Rd. in Geneseo.

Obituary Preview: Gail Elizabeth Laursen, 73, of York passed away peacefully and unexpectedly in her home Sunday, May 5th, 2024. She was predeceased by her parents Carl and Jeanette Mandeville.
She is survived by her husband, Keith Laursen, sons Kevin (Sandy Jester) Laursen of York, Christopher (Shannon) Laursen of Caledonia, grandchildren Jessica (JW) Cook of Pittsford, Samantha (Ryan) Bulter of Caledonia and Joseph Laursen of Caledonia, brother Terry (Shirley) Mandeville of Leicester, sister Gay Mandeville of York, nieces and nephews, Scott (Marissa Lena O'Connor) Mandeville of Amesbury, MA, Elizabeth (Danny) Lyness who is also her Goddaughter of York, Carolyn (Colin) Tidd of Lake Placid, Holly Bigelow of York, Dave Mandeville of Henrietta and Mercedes MacGonegal of Rochester, great nieces and nephews, Anna Lyness, Carl Szczech, Adam Szczech, Daniel Lyness, Laura Szczech, Maggie Szczech, Connor Mandeville, Jonathan "Jack" Mandeville and Isla Tidd, along with several other brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews and treasured friends.
Gail was born November 11, 1950 in Warsaw, NY, the first born of Carl Glenn and Jeanette Helena Krueger Mandeville. She was a graduate of York Central School in 1968 and immediately began working at the G&W railroad where she made her career holding several different positions during her 44 years there until her retirement in 2012.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday, May 8, 2024 from 4-7 PM at the Rector-Hicks Funeral Home, 111 Main Street in Geneseo. Graveside Services will be held Friday, May 10, 2024 at 11AM at Pleasant Valley Cemetery in York, with a luncheon following at A-ON-DO-WA-NUH Sportsman's Club 4716 River Road in Cuylerville.

Mary was born August 29, 1932 in Retsof, NY the daughter of Charles and Michelina Arrigenna Farruggia Jr. She was the owner of her hairdressing business while being employed at General Foods in Avon. After marrying, Mary and Art owned Art’s Market, Softball Unlimited, and Art’s Vending in York, where they have lived their whole life in a community that they loved. Mary was a lifetime member of St. Lucy’s Church in Retsof. Mary’s favorite pastime was spending time with her family, especially cooking Sunday Dinners with them, but above all, Mary cherished every second she spent with her grandchildren.

He enjoyed sports, listening to music, especially jazz, and overall enjoyed the arts.

He is survived by his wife, Norma Sartain Benedict, his children, Jack (Judy) Benedict of Geneseo, Gary (Mary Ann) Benedict of Livonia, Dennis Benedict of Newark, Sandra Ulanowicz of Geneseo, Pamela (Harry) Gardner of Lakeville, grandchildren, Michael and Richard (Becky) Benedict, Nicole and Thomas Benedict, Travis, Brianna (Tony) and Alexis Benedict, Daniel (Korisa), Jason (Kelsey) and Eric Petre, several great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.
Gary enlisted in the US Marines in September of 1955 in Camp Lejeune, NC where he met and married Norma Sartain in November of 1956. They relocated to Geneseo, NY after his service to his country and raised 5 wonderful children there having been married 67 years, Upon relocating to Geneseo, Gary went to work in the family business building residential homes in the Geneseo and Rochester areas. He and his brother Douglas followed construction in Geneseo and began working for Warner Spitz Construction in Rochester where he worked for 20 years before retirement. He then served the Towns of Geneseo, Groveland and Conesus as Code Enforcer and Building Inspector. Gary then worked for 15 years at Walmart in Geneseo. He was an avid golfer and was a member at Livingston Country Club in Geneseo. Gary was a fan of the Buffalo Bills, Buffalo Sabres and the SUNY Geneseo Hockey Team. He and his son Gary also coached the Geneseo Youth Hockey Teams at the Pee Wee and Bantam levels. Gary had a great sense of commitment to family and community. He was a member of Central Presbyterian Church in Geneseo for over 60 years.
Friends may call Thursday, March 28 from 4-7 PM at the Rector-Hicks Funeral Home, 111 Main St. in Geneseo. Funeral Services will be held Friday March 29 at 11 AM at the Central Presbyterian Church, 31 Center St. in Geneseo. Interment will follow at Temple Hill Cemetery in Geneseo with Military Honors.

Bill and Marilyn enjoyed many years of camping with family and friends. After their retirements, Bill and Marilyn especially enjoyed traveling to Arizona and Florida in their Motorhome.

Obituary Preview: Clifford B. Stevens, age 88, of Leicester, died Saturday, March 9, 2024 at Unity Hospital in Rochester, NY. He was predeceased by his siblings, Frank, Floyd, Gertrude, Dorothy and Norma.
He is survived by his children, Mark Stevens of Leicester, Janet (Dale Quackenbush) Stevens of Scottsville, many nieces and nephews.
Clifford was born August 5, 1935 in Dansville, NY the son of Clifford Briggs and Edna A. Barnhart Stevens. Cliff worked at AR Christiano Hardware in Leicester as a youth before opening his own hardware store on Main Street in Geneseo. He went on to operate Wright's Floral and Gift Shop, as well as other gift shops. Clifford had a love of cars leading him into sales for a period. He retired from Walmart as the paint and hardware guru. Cliff enjoyed spending time in his own wood working shop and is known for the car that he modified into a convertible.

Eleanor "Lee" B. Smith - July 21, 1930 - March 03, 2024

Obituary Preview: Eleanor "Lee" Besemer Smith of Geneseo passed away peacefully in her home on Sunday, March 3, 2024, after a courageous battle with old age. She was 93.
Lee was born on July 21, 1930, and grew up in Kingston, NY. Her parents, Walter and Louise Besemer, were German immigrants. They were co-owners, and lived above, the Wagner & Besemer Deli in Kingston. She was very close to her beloved brother, Egon, who was nine years her senior. Egon was hospitalized for two years with polio as a child, then went on to have a career as a chemist. Sadly, he died in 1955.
Lee enrolled in the University of Rochester at 16, where she earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry. She met her future husband Richard "Dick" Smith at the U of R in a chemistry lab, and they married in 1951. She worked at Kodak but was asked to resign when they noticed she was pregnant. Dick became a college professor, and in 1965 he accepted a position at SUNY Geneseo.
Dick and Lee were supporters of the arts. They made many trips to Toronto and London, where they especially enjoyed classical music, theater, and fine art. Lee also loved to read, go to the movies, and do crossword puzzles in pen.
Lee was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Richard F. Smith, and brother, Egon Walter Besemer.
She is survived by her children, Marilyn (Walter Putter) Smith of Syracuse, Kenneth (Maureen) Smith of Lakeville, and Janet (Jonathan Goldberg) Smith of Newton, MA; grandchildren, Sean Flanagan, Patricia (Stephen Watson) Smith, Leanne Smith, Rosalie Goldberg, and Arnon Goldberg; and three great grandchildren—Christopher, Shay, and Daxtyn.

Arnold was born July 27, 1936 in Gelsenkirchen, Germany the son of Fredrich and Elisabeth Kroll Dueppengiesser. He owned and operated Ransom Rail Dairy Farm in Perry for many years. Arnie was a past president of the NY Holstein Association, President and CEO of the Conesus Milk Producers, served on the Board of Directors for Dairylea Cooperative, NY Dairy Marketing Services, Dairy Management Inc., and a member and consultant for Dairy Farmers of America. Arnie was a member of St. Luke's the Evangelist Parish where he served on many committees including the Parish Council. He was a long time Rotarian in Perry. Papa supported all his grandkids, attending sporting events, school concerts, cattle shows and more.
His home was the favorite gathering place to celebrate all the family events. Tranquil Reflections was a labor of love for Arnold and Sharyon. Open to all, in encompasses 10 acres at their home, created as a place for peaceful reflection.

Terrence (Cara) Bennett of Altoona, PA, Nora (Jim) Devoy of Fayetteville, NY, his brother-in-law, James (Darlene) Wojtanik, many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins, as well as his adoring pets.
Jamie was born April 2, 1964 in Syracuse, NY, the son of Floyd W. and Barbara Ryan Bennett. He was a graduate of Cazenovia High School, earned his Bachelor's Degree from SUNY Geneseo, and his Master's Degree from SUNY Brockport. Jamie was a retired high school English teacher, but his true calling was as an adjunct professor at SUNY Geneseo, where he was part of the Philosophy Department for the past 18 years. Jamie's love of imparting knowledge in his Humanities classes, along with his wonderful rapport with his students, earned him the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2016. He spent many summers teaching abroad in Greece, Italy, and Spain, which further whet his appetite for travel to explore many delicious foods and cultures.
Raised with a strong sense of community service, Jamie was also an EMT for the Geneseo Ambulance and Geneseo Fire Departments for several years. But his greatest joy was spending time with his immediate and extended families, and with the many friends who loved him well. Marjorie, known as Marji by her family and friends, was born on April 17, 1930 in Reeds Corners, NY to her parents, Harlan and Hazel Trescott. She attended Dansville High School, graduating in 1948. After graduation, she worked for Foster Wheeler in Dansville and then was a homemaker for many years.
She is predeceased by two husbands, Donald K. Rice, Sr. and Joseph Tice, her son, Donald K. Rice, Jr., brothers, William and Robert, two sisters, Helen and Ann.
She is survived by two daughters, Christine Rice Nidd and her husband Phil of Houston, TX, Cheryl Rice Bigenho and her husband Jerry of Quakertown, PA, and a son, Ronald Rice and his wife Danielle of Amarillo, TX, ten grandchildren, Jessica and Joshua Hitchcock, Rebekah Bigenho Kelly, Ben Bigenho, Bethany Bigenho Jorgensen, Keeley and Kierra Rice, Donald III, Alec and Hannah Rice, and twelve great grandchildren.
Marji lived in the same house in Groveland Corners for nearly 60 years. She loved gardening and playing the piano. She was self-taught and played only by ear. This brought her great joy and she enjoyed sharing her gift with others. She was involved in a number of small bands and played at nursing homes, the Groveland Federated Parish and other various venues in the surrounding area. She even had the privilege of recording a CD with a close musical friend.
The family will celebrate her life with a private graveside service at Lakeview Cemetery in Groveland.

She was well known as a cook at The Barn Restaurant in Greigsville. Millie was an avid bowler and enjoyed her many camping trips. She was a member of the Mt. Morris VFW Post 547 Ladies Auxiliary where she was a regular for bingo night.

She was a dedicated mom and grandma and enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

Father Ed attended St. John Fisher College in Rochester, NY and then went on to study at St. Andrew's and St. Bernard's seminaries and Rome's Pontifical North American College in Italy. He was ordained on December 18, 1960 in Rome where continued to study and earned his Master's and Doctoral degrees in Sacred Theology.
In 1969 Father Ed started working in the Philadelphia area with the homeless, less fortunate and ministered prisoners and ex-prisoners. In the early 1980's he returned to the Rochester area serving in many different capacities. His first pastoral position was with the Immaculate Conception in Rochester. Father Ed then became the pastor at St. Felix and St. Francis Churches in Ontario County. He was the senior priest for St. Joseph the Worker Parish in Wayne County, Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, and retired from St. Luke the Evangelist Parish in Livingston County. After his retirement, Father Ed moved to St. Mary's Church in Canandaigua where he resided.
Father Ed will lie in state on Monday, January 29, 2024 from 10 - 11 AM at St. Mary's Church, 4 Avon Rd., Geneseo, where his Funeral Mass will be held at 11 AM with the Most Reverend Salvatore R. Matano officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Geneseo.
