Obituary Preview: Magdalene Carol (Campbell) Gonzales, age 59, of Olin, N.C., passed away Saturday, March 19, 2022, at her home after a period of declining health issues.  She was a resident of Iredell County.
Magdalene was born October 21, 1962, to the late James and Mary Campbell.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Carolyn McGuire, and her niece, Jackie Maria Parsons.
Mrs. Gonzalez worked many jobs which included sewing factories, nursing homes, and restaurants.  She loved spending time with family and friends, and she was the life of the party.   She loved all her nieces and nephews dearly.  She was a ray of sunshine on someone’s cloudy day.
In 2009, she met the love of her life, Armando Moreno.  They had 13 amazing years together.  Also, surviving is her three sisters, Rachel Torres (Arnulfo) of Yadkinville, N.C., Sheila Campbell (Mike) of Union Grove, N.C., and Joyce Pack (Calvin) of Virginia.  She had several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews who she loved greatly.
On Wednesday, March 23, a visitation for Magdalene will be held from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Reavis Funeral Home of Statesville.  A funeral service will take place on Thursday, March 24, at 12:00 pm, also, at Reavis Funeral Home of Statesville.  Magdalene will be laid to rest in Iredell Memorial Park.

Obituary Preview: Eula Marie (Dishman) Benge, age 85, of Statesville, N.C., passed away at Iredell Memorial Hospital on March 1, 2022.
Eula was born on January 27, 1937, in Iredell, N.C.  She was the daughter of the late Johnny Moss Dishman and Notie Leigh (McDaniels) Dishman.  In addition to her parents, Eula was preceded in death by her loving husband, Clay Marshall Benge, and several siblings.
In life, Eula chose a career in healthcare and worked as a C.N.A.  She married Clay Benge.  Eula was a Christian woman and served her Lord faithfully.
Eula leaves behind to treasure her memory; her son, Rickie Lee Shumaker (Deborah) of Tennessee, stepsons, Melvin Ray Benge (Sylvia) of Statesville and Larry Dean Benge (Glenda) of Statesville, a daughter, Geraldine Newland of Statesville, a stepdaughter, Carol Renee Jones (Ronnie) of Statesville, eight grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.
There is to be a memorial service on Tuesday, March 8th at the First Church of the Nazareth at 506 Medlin Street (just behind NB Mills Elementary School).  Friends and family to gather at 6:30 pm with the memorial to follow at 7.

Obituary Preview: Janice Carol (Purkey) McDaniel, age 67, of Hamptonville, NC, departed this world from Davis Regional Hospital on February 27, 2022.
Janice was born on June 22, 1954, in Jefferson City Tennessee.  She was the daughter of the late Della (Long) Purkey and Clinton Purkey.  In addition to her parents, Janice was preceded in death by her son, Charlie Wayne McDaniel who passed unexpectedly in 2011.
Janice was a one of a kind, she was a mother figure to many. Most knew her for her kindness and caring heart, she took in many people as if they were already family no matter the situtaion she was alway's there for everyone weither you needed a place to stay or even just a shoulder to cry on she was there. She will alway's be known as NANA or Maw to many of us.
In life, Janice enjoyed sitting outside and talking for endless amount's of time, she had a love for going and exploring new places, walking around yard sale's, going to antique shop's and playing checker's, but most of all she loved spending time with her husband, son and two Grand Daughters. She was alway's filled with love and wisdom she alway's wore a smile no matter what. She will never be forgotten, we will love and cherish everything she provided and taught us, We will always love and miss her. We love you forever and more NANA.
Janice leaves behind to cherish her memory; her husband, Coy McDaniel, grandchildren, Kharly McDaniel, Harley McDaniel, and family friend Donald Young and one great-grandchild that is on the way.
At the family’s request, a celebration of life for Janice will be held at a later date.

Obituary Preview: ROBERT ANDREW MESSER (Moose), 51, of Statesville, NC died suddenly on February 19, 2022. He was born on December 17, 1970, in Huntington, WV.  He grew up in Kenova, WV, which he always referred to as “home”
He loved football and music, especially AC/DC, Lynyrd Skynryd, Aerosmith, ZZ Top and KISS, which he reminded his family of frequently with his never-ending sense of humor.  He kept everyone around him laughing with his silly antics and unexpected conversations.  He was loved by so many and returned that love to them.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Don & Reba Workman, uncle Robert Workman, Aunt Janet Williamson and stepfather, John Bodine.
Left to treasure his memory are his mother & stepfather, Carolyn & Ken Lee of Statesville; daughter & son-in-law, Brianna & Scott Brookshire of Taylorsville, NC; son & girlfriend, Brandon Messer & Brianna Rowe of Hamptonville, NC; grandchildren Tucker & Kinsleigh Brookshire and Lukas Messer; brother & sister-in-law, Ray & Kim Messer of Huntington, WV; sister, Wendy Smith of Statesville; niece, Brittany Messer of Huntington, WV; nephews, Jared Messer & wife, Abbi of Wilmington, NC, Austin Smith and Alex Smith, both of Statesville; as well as uncles, aunts, many cousins and numerous friends. Elsie was born on July 1, 1947, in Iredell County.  She was the daughter of the late Espy Campbell Sr. and Bulah Mable (Cloer) Campbell.  In addition to her parents, Elsie was preceded in death by her husband, Danny Freeman, a sister, Shirley Mitchem, and brothers, Espy Lee Campbell, James Campbell, and Jerry Campbell.
In life, Elsie worked in the healthcare field as a CNA for Olin Village.  She worked there for 10 years before retiring.  Elsie was a Christian woman and was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church.  Elsie leaves behind to cherish her memory, three brothers, Melvin Campbell, Clifton Ray Campbell and Roger Dale Campbell, all of Harmony.
A graveside service will take place at Pleasant View Baptist Church Cemetery on Tuesday, February 8, at 4:00 pm.

Obituary Preview: Karen “Denise” Wood, 60, of Statesville, NC, gained her angel wings on February 4, 2022, at Gordon’s Hospice House in Statesville, NC, after a courageous battle with cancer. Denise was born on December 6, 1961, in Iredell County to the late Billy Ray Wood and Lala Hall Wood.  She was a strong woman and was an amazing mother and grandmother with a heart of gold.  Denise worked in the textile industry in her younger years and enjoyed gardening and spending time with her granddaughter “little princess.”
She is survived by her beloved son, Gary Franklin Wood and wife Kimberly LaNay Wood, of Statesville, and a granddaughter, Danielle Marie Wood.  Also surviving are maternal aunts, Elsie H. Kamps, Lucy H. Money, Lois H. Tomlin and Norma H. Harder, and special cousins, Cheri Tomlin Ellis, Terri Avramis and Deborah Brotherton and her close friends, Cleo Martin and Geraldine Smith, all of whom will miss her dearly.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, February 10, 2022, at Hebron Baptist Church with Rev. Darren Johnson officiating.  Burial will follow in the Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery.  The family will receive friends at Hebron Baptist Church Sanctuary from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM on Thursday, prior to the service.  The family asks that any donations, be made to Hebron Baptist Church in loving memory of Denise.

Eva was born on April 19, 1931, in Iredell County.  She was the daughter of the late Roy Daniel Rumple and Annie Mae (Linley) Rumple.  In addition to her parents, Eva was preceded in death by her husband, Phillip Talmadge Leonard, two sons, Terry Davidson and Mark Leonard, a brother, Dan Rumple, and six sisters, Fern Crouch, Betty Threate, Wanda Williams, Nadine Rector, Jackie Smith, and Dorothy Lytton.
In life, Eva was a devoted wife and mother as a stay at home mom, she was a Christian woman as a member of Catawba United Methodist Church.  When she wasn’t at home or church, Eva enjoyed taking the kids to sports and events. She also enjoyed dancing, spending time at the family lake house, traveling to their property in Montana, and spending time with her grandchildren.
Eva leaves behind to cherish her memory; a son, David Leonard (Hope), her grandchildren, Kelsey Setzer (Eric), Nikki Davidson, Justin Davidson and Cody Davidson, and great grandchildren, Zoe Haneline, Kayleigh Setzer and Layla Marie Davidson, who will all miss her greatly.
A graveside service for Eva will be held on Wednesday, February 2, at Catawba United Methodist Church Cemetery beginning at 2:00 pm.  Rev. Joe Parker and Rev. Heetae Kim will officiate the service.

Robert was born on March 6, 1958, in Statesville.  He was the son of the late James Garfield Grant and Blanche Shirley Church.
In life, Robert married his wife Georgina Lail Grant in 1975. He became pastor of New Life Community Baptist Church in 2021.
Robert is survived by; his wife, Georgina Grant of Statesville, two sons, James Grant (Shellen) of Statesville and Damon Grant (Krystle) of Lexington, one daughter, Dacia Hodgin (Edward) of Georgia, and seven beautiful grandchildren, who will all miss him greatly.
A Celebration of Life service for Robert will be held at New Life Community Baptist Church on Saturday, February 5, beginning at 10:00 am.  Pastor Steve Horton will officiate the service. Mask are required for all attending service in person. Due to limited seating, parking, and those who are sick or have been exposed to any illness the celebration of life service will be viewable on the church Facebook New Life Community Baptist Church page.

In life, Curt graduated from Clarion University earning a bachelor’s degree.  He went on to become an accountant, after working for many years he retired.  He married the love of his life, Mary Cancilla Hagins in May of 1981.
Curt leaves behind to cherish his memory, his loving wife, Mary, a daughter, Caitlin Upright of Statesville, a sister, Janice Coleman (Richard) of Leechburg, PA, and three grandchildren, Braden, Saxton, and Killian.

In life, Albert attended Iredell schools.  He later, chose a career in the textile industry working for Payola Cotton Mill.  Albert was of the Baptist Faith and was a member of Liberty Baptist Church.
Albert is survived by his three sons, Timothy Albert Shoemaker (Susan), Christopher Shoemaker, and Albert Wayne Shoemaker, a daughter, Patricia Diane O’Boyle (Ronald), a brother, Gary Shoemaker, a sister, Betty Pierce, eight grandchildren, Allie, Shane, Cameron, Albert Jr., Abigail Marie, Anthony, Rebecca, Dakota, and five great-grandchildren, Haley, Jerry, Ruby, Jaxson and Alexander.
A visitation for Albert will be held on Friday, January 28, from 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm at Liberty Baptist Church on Highway 115 in Statesville.  A funeral service will follow visitation at 1:00 pm, also, located at Liberty Baptist Church, with Pastor Robert officiating.

Betty was born on April 30, 1935, in Welch, WVA.  She was the daughter of the late Ambrose and Edna Chambers.  In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her first and second husbands, Howard Belton and Lawrence Allgood, four brothers, Jack, James, Garland, Boss and William Chambers, and one sister, Beula Chambers.
In life, Betty attended school in West Virginia.  Later, she chose a career in the medical field where she worked in nursing homes for 25 years.  Betty was a God-fearing woman and was of the Baptist faith.
Betty leaves behind to cherish her memory; two sons, Howard Belton (Donna) of Howell, NJ, Vince Belton of Statesville, NC, one daughter, Barbara Stadler (Kim) of Michigan, and five grandchildren, Vince Belton Jr., Erica Archer, Nicholas Belton, Jameson Stadler, and Mica Stadler.  All who knew her will miss her greatly.
A graveside service for Betty will be held at Oakwood Cemetery on Monday, January 10, 2022, at 11:00 am.

Wilma was born on July 24, 1937, in Wilkes County, NC.  She was the daughter of the late Ada Johnson.  In addition to her mother and father, Wilma was preceded in death by her loving husband, Wayne James Laws, her son, Donald W. Laws, brothers, Rex Johnson, Carl Dean Johnson, and Van Johnson, and sisters, Nina Eller and Evon Johnson.
In life, Wilma attended Wilkes County schools.  She later, started a career with Hickory Chair in furniture manufacturing, where she worked for 20 + years before retiring.  Wilma was a kind woman who loved her children and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Wilma is survived by her sons, Mike Laws (Kay Oliver) of Lawndale, and Mark Laws (Ellen) of Statesville, a sister, Dorothy Nickleson, grandchildren, David Laws, Kimberly Stien, Jessica Applegate, Holly Woods, Lindsey Laws, Hanna Warnick, Wesley Laws, Chris Laws, Elizabeth Laws, Karla Laws, and 18 great-grandchildren, who will miss Wilma greatly.
A graveside service will be held on January 3, 2022, beginning at 1:00 pm at Iredell Memorial Park.  Pastor John Powell will officiate the service.

Bob, as he was so lovingly known as, was born on January 27, 1929, in Lawrence Co., TN.  He was the son of the late Henry Herbert Turpen and Katie (Bonner) Turpen.  In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his loving wife, Billie Jean (Battle) Turpen, and his sister, Joy Barnett.
In life, Bob attended school in Tennessee. He went on to college and earned a bachelor’s degree.  Bob honored his country and served in The United States Army.  Later, he became a banker and worked for nearly 40 years until he retired.  Bob was strong in his Christian faith and was a member of McKendree United Methodist Church in Nashville, TN.  He was also a member of the Rotary Club.
Bob leaves behind to cherish his memory; a son, Richard Turpen (Nancy) of Birmingham, AL, a daughter, Robyn Turpen of Statesville, and two grandchildren, Katie Turpen Doyle (Michael) of Birmingham, AL and Samuel Turpen (Chelsea) of Dallas, TX.
Dad never met a stranger and could find the good in anyone.  He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Brenda leaves behind to cherish her memory; her loving husband, John Mowrey of Hickory, her two beautiful daughters, Sonja Roberts of Weaverville, NC and Angela Moore of Trinity, NC and three grandchildren, Shaelyn Roberts, Elijah Roberts, and Kara Moore, all who will miss her very much.

In life, Grover attended Iredell County Schools.  Later, he began a career in commercial glass installation working for A and H Stained Glass.  In 1985, Grover married April Renee (Vanhoy) Hicks in Iredell County.

Obituary Preview: Jerry Woolard, 80, of Statesville NC passed away on Monday November 22, 2021 at the Gordon Hospice House in Statesville NC.  His daughter, Tammy Blackmon prayed with him as he passed. His son, Jerry Woolard Jr. joined shortly after via phone and both were able to visit with him for a time of healing and mourning.
There will be a graveside service at Oakwood Cemetery on Friday 26th at 1:00 with the service finale ending at 3:00 with the filling and decorating of the grave.  Cemetery address is 114 N Oakwood Drive Statesville NC 28677 and the nearest cross roads is Cowles Drive and Oakwood Drive; look for balloons.  Please come prepared to share your love and sentiments for this time of healing.  Any persons that have been exposed to COVID, please do come and join the service and please do wear a mask and practice social distancing.  The family is utilizing Johnson Green House 704-873-4345 ask for the Jerry Woolard Service.  The AA Family will be having a reception at the AA House at 432 Bell Street in Statesville following the graveside service.
Jerry was preceded in death by his wife Mary Brackett Woolard, son Johnny Woolard, mother Pauline Elizabeth Etheridge Woolard, father Ira Woolard, and many friends that were truly his family.
He is survived by his sons Jerry Woolard Jr. and Edward Woolard /Vickie Hatton and his daughter Tammy Blackmon, his three sisters Lucy Carstater, Shirley Erickson, and Patricia Willoughby, his brother Earl Woolard, his three grandchildren Twila Woolard, Brian Blackmon, Scott Blackmon and his AA family that he truly loved as his own.

Survivors include his Loving wife of 68 years, Wilma (Johnson) Laws, sons Mike Laws (Kay Oliver) of Lawndale, Mark Laws (Ellen) of Statesville, brother Harold Dean Laws (Brenda) of Elkin, sisters Dorothy Yale of Yadkinville, Geneva Higgins of Millers Creek, Cynthia Huffman (Danny) of Wilkesboro, Joyce Anderson (John) of Wilkes County, Arlee Livingston of Hickory, grandchildren David Laws, Kimberly Stien, Jessica Applegate, Holly Woods, Lindsey Laws, Hannah Warnick, Wesley Laws, Chris Laws, Elizabeth Laws, Karla Laws, and 17 great grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 11:00 AM on Tuesday November 23, 2021 at Iredell Memorial Park Cemetery.

Steve was born on January 31, 1950 in Frankfort, Kentucky.  He was the son of the late James Shirley Rogers and Marilyn Garrard (Burdin) Rogers.  In addition to his parents, Steve was preceded in death by his loving wife, Ima Joyce (Clark) Rogers and his great granddaughter Kiley Elizabeth Reaves.
In life, John attended schools in Kentucky and Texas. Steve married the love of his life, Ima Joyce (Clark) Rogers in 1976.  Later, he began a career in sales where he was a salesman most recently with Tec Utilities until retiring this year. Steve was of the Methodist faith and a member of Harmony Methodist Church.
Steve leaves behind to cherish his memory; a daughter, Eva Foster (Ian) of Camden, brothers, James Gregory Rogers of Frankfort, KY and Jeffrey Irvin Rogers  (Mary) also of Frankfort, KY, and sisters, Cathy Olsen (Jan) of Springtown, TX.  Also, surviving Steve are his grandchildren; Kimberly Ryan, Sarah Raney, and Alex Foster, and great-grandchildren, Lucas and Logan Reaves, who will all miss him, greatly.
Steve was an avid golfer when health allowed and passed on his love to anyone who would join him on the course. To his immediate family he was "Granddaddy" a persona he took on proudly and a role he fulfilled to the fullest.
A funeral service for Steve will be held on Friday, November 19, 2021 at 6:00 pm located at Harmony Methodist Church. Steve will  be laid to rest with his wife, Joyce in Harmony, NC.
