Fred Josue Bobila - July 18, 1945 - January 16, 2022

Departed: 01/16/2022 (Dunkirk)
Obituary Preview: Fred Bobila was the nicest of men. Often described as kind, generous, and sweet, he was a genuinely lovely person. He was a full-hearted husband. A constant and unconditionally devoted father. The grandest of grandfathers. The best big brother. A true and trusted friend. He was all of these things and more… Because there was always (always) just enough, bite, bark, swagger, and swear to make him real, keep things interesting, and generate a presence that was meaningful and memorable.
Fred was born in July 1945 in the Philippines, the first of Vic and Nining Bobila’s seven children, and eventually manong to siblings Alex, Wilbur, Vicki, Marilou, Maribel, and Ellen. The Bobilas were well-known in the town of Bangued, capital of the large mountainous province of Abra in Northern Luzon. A prominent local doctor, Vic founded Clinica Bobila, which was home to his practice and to his large family. Nining, a teacher and local civic and religious leader, was beloved by the town and revered by her children. Together, Vic and Nining proudly raised a family of doctors… except for Fred. Always the rebel, he charted his own course, which included immigration to the United States in the mid-1960s where he remained and built his life. After settling in Washington, DC, he met and married his first wife, Nila Carpio, with whom he had two children, JR and Natalie. After taking computer classes, Fred secured a position at the National Geographic Society where he worked for most of his career. He would leave Geographic for a stint at the US Chamber of Commerce, but would eventually return before finally retiring.
While working at the US Chamber, Fred met Ann, who would later become his long-time partner and, ultimately, his second wife. In 2001, he, Ann, and Ann’s son Hunter, moved from suburban Silver Spring to their custom-built house on five acres in the woods in Upper Marlboro. Fred filled his retirement years with home projects selected from an endless list of honey-do options. He was a perfectionist and it would often take him quite some time to mark something complete. But when he did finish, it was with great pride that he displayed his accomplishments! He was a painstaking tinkerer, proudly eschewing directions of any kind because, with enough patience and finesse, he could figure out almost anything. He and Ann always looked forward to cooking – and most especially eating – together.
They were both endlessly excited about traveling the world together, seeing new places, experiencing the unknown, and allowing Fred the opportunity to indulge his passion for photography. They found joy in gathering family and friends on the deck Fred built, to feed them Filipino delicacies he prepared, and to spend time with the people he loved, in the home he enjoyed. He was an avid marksman and a crack shot. Although he had not lived in the Philippines for many decades, he was a loyal ex-patriot and closely followed hometown politics. He founded a wildly popular Facebook Group called The Beauty of Abra to bring attention to the diverse geography of his province. He wasn’t an especially sporty guy and was not a fan of routinized exercise but he had taken up yoga and recently enrolled in tennis lessons, though it could be said that he had a special talent for impromptu napping.
Fred was mulishly stubborn and fiercely opinionated with a rigid sense of right and wrong. But this was balanced and mellowed by an even-tempered tenderness that produced a disarming “live and let live” attitude. He had legions of friends, many of whom were lifelong. But he was just as likely to be warmly and enthusiastically greeted by the local pharmacist or hardware store associate who knew him by name. He was always the tallest Filipino in the room… surrounded by a bevy of women who were drawn to him like honey bees to the sweetest flower. He had charisma and charm to spare. He was the nicest of men.
Fred died in the early hours of Sunday morning, January 16, 2022, with his wife by his side.  Though fully vaccinated and boosted, he was one of the many millions who tragically lost their lives to the Covid-19 pandemic.  He will be missed by everyone who knew and loved him.  But his absence will be most keenly felt by his adoring children JR, Natalie, and Hunter.  By his steadfast brothers and sisters.  By the long-awaited and most precious of grandchildren, Xandros and Maddax, who were everything to him.  And by his wife, Ann, who was his cooking partner, travel buddy, fellow movie buff, best friend, and constant companion.  His dogs Jake and Roi still look for him.
He left this world with a long to-do list.  He was a man with plans.  Plans to build things. To play with his grandchildren.  To travel with his wife.  To master the downward dog.  But he didn’t regret much.  He ate what he wanted and mostly what he shouldn’t.  He told his wife he loved her almost every day of their lives together. And although it was Covid that took him from her, it was also the pandemic that allowed them to spend every day of the last two years together.  He spoke his mind.  He swore like a sailor.  He bequeaths wonderful memories and the happiest of smiles (you know the one) to all those who cared about him.  He squeezed his grandchildren until his heart burst.  He lived life on his own terms.
Fred never liked the idea of a funeral as a way to say goodbye.  Unsurprisingly, he instead favored something much more upbeat, happy, and celebratory.  His family has chosen to honor his preferences by hosting an outdoor, informal Memorial Service and Life Celebration on Saturday, May 14, from 2pm-5pm, at Fred’s home in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.   Guests are encouraged to bring a photo of Fred to share and display.  In the meantime, contributions in his name may be made to Anne Arundel Medical Center.  The nurses and doctors there were exceptionally kind, took very good care of him, and provided consistently excellent treatment over the years.

Frances Donna Andujar - July 18, 1954 - January 01, 2022

Departed: 01/01/2022 (Dunkirk)
Obituary Preview: Celebrating the wonderful life of Frances Donna Andujar. The greatest show woman, she juggled careers, children, grandchildren, fur-babies and feathered friends while being the most loving and doting Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Honey, Maw-Maw, Sister, Aunt and Friend. She was first a lady, always, and devilishly simple.
To know her was to be loved by her. Even if you didn’t know her you were family and were treated as such. You met her in the grocery store, she was the nice lady who let you go in front because you had your hands full. Humble and kind. Pink Flamingos gave her hope because even the poorest of folks always find a way to have a couple in the yard. You witnessed her kindness when she helped you clean up a mess you got yourself into and left the room smelling better than when she arrived. She was there to calm your fears in the courthouse land records while helping you locate uncle so and so’s property lines. She was a most treasured friend to all who knew her. She thought so much of others she often forgot her glasses on the way out the door to care for them. No worries, she usually had hoarded a pair or two just in case.  She listened to everyone, even when you thought she wasn’t. She heard our hearts and prayed for them often.
She learned how to pray from listening to her father. She loved her mother and Jesus and said her prayers loudly. She was a warrior and fought until her last breath was breathed. She prayed up to the second her spirit left her failing physical vessel on earth. Not once did she ever lose hope or faith. It was her final wish that everyone who valued her, know Jesus and love one another. She was a good and faithful servant. She held tightly when she hugged. She was held tighter when she decided it was time to cross the clear water and head over the river to Heaven and her Lord. She will be missed. To those who knew her, you were blessed to see how Jesus wanted you to love others freely and unconditionally. Until we gather at the river where bright Angel feet have trod. Rest in peace! See you on the banks of the river someday.

Katherine Kae Cates - Unknown - November 14, 2021

Departed: 11/14/2021 (Dunkirk)
Obituary Preview: Katherine “Rusty” Cates, 91, of Montross, VA passed away in her home on November 14, 2021, surrounded by her loving family. Rusty grew up in Washington, DC, seven blocks from Union Station, where she loved roller skating, visiting art galleries and free concerts on Friday nights, and most of all, going to her grandparent’s ice cream shop in Georgetown, which was the best treat! Most of us associate Rusty with living in North Beach, MD where she loved to fish, have crab feasts in her backyard, and always have the Redskins game on. Rusty was a fierce woman – holding fast to her beliefs, defending those she loved, and always availing herself to friends and family. Understanding that five of her closest girlfriends followed her to North Beach, MD to take up residence should attest to her loyalty and kindness. Although Rusty was 91 years old, her mind was still sharp! Just weeks before, she recounted living in WDC during the World War referred to as the “Blackout” years and told her story of how the city was when President Kennedy was assassinated. These are only a few of the amazing events she experienced during her walk on this earth. When Rusty found out her health was fading, she turned to her daughters and said,  Let’s go shopping.” When you see six young men in football gear carrying her casket, don’t worry- we haven’t forgotten funeral etiquette.  As her health began to rapidly decline, two days before she passed, she commented in her feisty tone, she hadn’t planned on going anywhere, “at least not until the Redskins won.”  Lo and behold, the Washington Football Team had a triumphant victory on her date of death, November 14, 2021. We will see Rusty again when we meet in heaven, in the meantime…… she’s gone fishing!
Rusty is survived by her daughters, Patricia (Larry) Vincent and Nancy (Guy) Lombardi; brother, James Rowley; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, Milton Frank and Ethel Cecilia (Merritt) Rowley; husband, John Robert Cates; son, Robert “Skippy” Cates; daughter, Barbara Jo Young and brothers, Vincent and Robert Rowley.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who need to know about the funeral arrangements and other details. They can also be a therapeutic way for families to process their grief and share memories of their loved one.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. Funeral homes or crematories may also offer assistance with writing an obituary as part of their services. In some cases, a professional obituary writer may be hired to craft the notice.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral services, memorial donations, and any other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform it will be published on. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a short paragraph. Online obituaries may allow for longer tributes or stories.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the notice and help readers remember the deceased.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to find out their submission guidelines and deadlines. Some newspapers may have online submission forms or email addresses where you can send the obituary text and photo(s).

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, it's becoming more common for people to write their own obituaries in advance as a way to take control of how they're remembered and to spare their loved ones from having to do it during a difficult time.

What's the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information like name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life and achievements.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! While an obituary should be respectful, it's okay to inject some humor or personality into the writing to reflect the deceased person's spirit and character.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost varies depending on the publication or platform. Newspapers may charge by the line or word count, while online obituary platforms may offer free or low-cost options. Funeral homes may also include obituary publication as part of their package prices.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

This depends on the publication or platform. Some may allow corrections or updates, while others may not. It's essential to proofread carefully before submitting the obituary to avoid errors.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe varies depending on the publication's schedule and deadlines. Online obituaries may be published immediately or within a few hours, while print newspapers may take several days or even weeks.

Can I republish an obituary at a later date?

Yes, you can republish an obituary on anniversaries or special occasions as a way to continue honoring your loved one's memory.

Are online obituaries permanent?

Most online obituary platforms archive notices permanently, allowing friends and family to access them for years to come. However, it's essential to check with each platform for their specific policies.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and meaning to an obituary, helping to capture the essence of the deceased person's personality or spirit.

What if I don't want to include certain family members in the obituary?

This can be a sensitive issue. It's generally recommended to include all immediate family members out of respect for their relationship with the deceased. However, if there are estranged relationships or other complex situations, it's best to discuss with other family members or a trusted advisor before making decisions.

Can I include charitable donations information in an obituary?

Yes! Many people choose to include information about memorial donations in lieu of flowers as a way to honor their loved one's legacy and support a meaningful cause.

How do I handle mistakes in an already-published obituary?

Contact the publication or platform immediately if you discover errors in the published obituary. They may be able to correct it online or issue a correction in a subsequent print edition.

Can I write an obituary for someone who died many years ago?

If you're looking to honor someone who passed away in the past but didn't have an official obituary published at the time, you can still write one as a way to celebrate their life and legacy.

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an obituary for someone who was LGBTQ+?

Yes! When writing an obituary for someone who identified as LGBTQ+, it's essential to respect their identity and use language that reflects their preferred pronouns and relationships.

Yes! Many online platforms allow you to include social media links or hashtags so that friends and family can share condolences and memories across different channels.

How do I ensure that my loved one's online obituary remains accessible over time?

Choose reputable online platforms that have a long-term archiving policy in place. You can also consider printing out copies of the obituary for safekeeping or creating a physical memory book with printed copies of online tributes.

What if I'm not comfortable writing an obituary myself? Can I get help?

Absolutely! If you're struggling with writing an obituary or need guidance on what to include, consider reaching out to a funeral home director, hospice bereavement counselor, or professional writer for assistance.
