Thomas Amos Hendrickson Jr. - October 30, 1962 - March 17, 2022

Departed: 03/17/2022 (Indianapolis)
Obituary Preview: Thomas Amos Hendrickson, Jr. was born October 30, 1962, in Indianapolis, Indiana, a bouncing baby boy from loving parents, the late Thomas Amos, Sr., and the late Bishop Andrene Singleton Hendrickson, in Indianapolis, Indiana at General Hospital/Wishard now known as Eskenazi. He was the second of six children, and the only son. In his early life he attended Washington Irving Elementary School #14, H.L. Harshman Junior High School #101, and Arsenal Technical High School. While at Tech, he was a straight A student who excelled in Auto Mechanics and grew to love everything about cars and fixing them. A talent he shared with his father, Thomas Sr., whom he always saw working on the family’s cars when necessary.
Thomas was raised in the church and attended often with his parents and sisters. As a young kid, he had a newspaper route which he shared with his sisters who would help him deliver papers before going to school early in the morning. Nearly every summer he and his sisters would spend days riding bikes and having fun on the farm, at his grandparents’ farm in Columbia, Kentucky. He began driving at an early age learning on his grandfather’s tractors. As a teen, he could be seen riding his 10-speed bike everywhere, even rode it to church when he had to. His parents saw to it that he’d BETTER had made it—or else! He liked basketball, skating and DJ’ing, too. He was instrumental with children at the St. Nicolas Youth Center on Hillside Avenue, where he mentored the kids and DJ’d when he gave them little parties on Fridays. His love of skating often led him to the skate centers around Indy, like Melody Skate Land and USA Skating Rink.
Thomas held various jobs after high school and throughout his life as a certified mechanic and skillfully repaired and owned numerous vehicles. He could build a car from scrap and then be seen driving all over town in it. Someone was always asking him “Thomas, can you fix my car?!” He loved cars, but more importantly, their radios. When he was young, he played his Parliament, Gap-Band, Cameo, and George Clinton-type music in his cars so loud he could be heard coming down the block from the corner stoplight at Washington Street and Arsenal Avenue, all the way down Arsenal Avenue to his parents’ house. He was often scolded for it. It didn’t matter, he absolutely loved bass and old school music, and his family always knew when he was coming. It was often thought he had speakers as big as his car, in his car. Later in his life, Thomas briefly lived in Detroit, Alabama, and Atlanta before returning to Indianapolis. He has three children one of whom has preceded him in death, Thomas Torrell, in 2021. Thomas took the loss very hard. He had soft spots, and could be a loving, kind, and sensitive man with a big heart for those he loved. Thomas was funny and could add some of the biggest moments of laughter and silliness to life, when he was around. All in all, he was well loved and cherished by his family. Thomas will be sorely missed by his family and friends. His main quote was “ Don’t let nobody knock you off your square...”
He leaves to mourn his daughter: Tiauna Shane’ Hendrickson, son: Dionte Jhermond Tucker, sisters: Ms. Marti (Martha) Hendrickson, Ms. Marie Jackson (Jessie), Mrs. Janet Hawkins (Willie), Mrs. Yvonne Ellerbe (Bernest), and Mrs. Michelle Knight (Romaine), a host of aunts, and uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins near and far, and a host of friends.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or crematorium. In some cases, a close friend or colleague may also write an obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It may also include information about their family, education, career, hobbies, and any notable achievements or accomplishments.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the individual's life. Typically, an obituary ranges from 100 to 500 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?
