Anderson Gatlin - April 08, 1956 - April 06, 2024

Departed: 04/06/2024 (Louisville)
Obituary Preview: Anderson Gatlin was born on April 8, 1956 in Brooklyn, New York, to Fred, Sr. and Novella
Gatlin. Anderson was the middle child of five, born 11 months after his older brother, Fred, Jr. and 11 months before his younger brother, Ronnie. They were the classic stair step kids. There are Irish twins…these were Irish triplets. Anderson’s siblings were Belinda, Fred, Jr., Ronnie and Sabrina. Anderson was known to everyone as “Pop.” On Saturday, April 6, 2024, Anderson departed this life, leaving the cares and pains of this world
behind. The Gatlins lived in Brooklyn, NY through the 1950s and 1960s (Albany Projects), before settling in Jamaica, Queens, NY in 1970. The 3 boys shared the basement. Anderson was educated by the New York City Department of Education, attending John Bowne High School in Flushing, Queens. As a kid, Pop used to pretend he was a preacher, and his siblings were the congregation. His father, Fred, used to drive the cab and Pop would often use a hanger and
pretend it was a steering wheel, imitating his dad. Anderson was very smart in school, and had impeccable handwriting. He was the designated writer for his mother, writing all of her annual Christmas cards. A sports fanatic, Pop was a heck
of a basketball player and loved the New York Knicks. He was very quiet and stayed to himself. It is no surprise, because he lived in the basement, his grandkids often referred to him as the “man under the stairs.” While in New York, Anderson attended South Road Tabernacle Outreach Ministries, a church his mother helped start. Under the leadership of Apostle Sarah Johnson. he gave his life to
Christ and served as a greeter/usher, Treasurer, and Deacon. In June 1994, Anderson moved to Louisville, KY. While in Louisville, he worked at a variety of bakeries, and enjoyed spending time with his kids. Once he retired, he was “the man under the stairs,” but also would babysit his grandkids, and help out his parents in between watching sports on TV. Pop also loved driving his Cadillac, the same car his dad had. They became very
close, especially in the years following the passing of his mother, Novella. He was preceded in death by his parents: Fred, Sr. and Novella Gatlin; son: Jamah Gatlin; and grandson: Marquis Gatlin, Jr.; the mother of his children: Letha Johnson; and his long-time
girlfriend, Deborah Morris. However, he leaves to cherish his memory, his children: Marquis (Tish), Marquia, Andrea, and Nakeima. His siblings: Belinda, Fred, Jr., Ronnie, and Sabrina. 19 Grandchildren, 2 Great-Grandchildren. One nephew: Freddie III; Four Nieces: Renaya, Tamika, Tracey, and Erica. A loving sister-in-law who stayed by his side, Patricia Gatlin. His favorite cousins in Cincinnati, The Johnsons. And a host of great nieces and nephews, cousins, friends and other
loved ones.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

What is the purpose of an obituary?

The primary purpose of an obituary is to share the news of a person's death with others, providing essential details about their life and funeral arrangements. It also serves as a way to honor and celebrate the deceased person's life, sharing their achievements, interests, and personality with those who knew them.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, an obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. In some cases, the deceased person may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary typically includes the deceased person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include funeral service details, memorial contributions, and any other relevant information.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a short paragraph. Some online obituary platforms may allow for longer tributes or stories.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only the basic facts such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed tribute that provides additional information about the person's life and accomplishments.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and funeral homes allow you to upload photos or create a photo slideshow to accompany the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the tribute and share memories of the deceased.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and deadlines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for publication.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly common for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on your life and legacy, as well as a way to ensure that your story is told accurately and authentically.

What is an online obituary?

An online obituary is a digital version of a traditional print obituary, published on websites or social media platforms. Online obituaries often offer more flexibility in terms of content, images, and interactive features such as guestbooks and condolence messages.

How long do online obituaries stay posted?

The duration that an online obituary remains posted varies depending on the platform or website. Some may keep them archived indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period.

Can I edit or update an existing obituary?

What is a memorial donation in lieu of flowers?

A memorial donation is a charitable contribution made in memory of the deceased person. Instead of sending flowers to the funeral service, friends and family can make a donation to a specified charity or organization that was meaningful to the deceased.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or genealogy websites that specialize in historical records. Local libraries or genealogical societies may also have access to archived newspapers and records.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an obituary?

If you notice errors or inaccuracies in an existing obituary, contact the publication or platform where it was published as soon as possible. They will work with you to correct the mistakes and republish the revised version.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and meaning to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with the deceased person's personality or values.

What is the difference between an obituary and a eulogy?

An obituary is typically written before the funeral service and provides factual information about the deceased person's life. A eulogy is a speech delivered during the funeral service that shares personal anecdotes and memories of the deceased.

Can I write an anonymous obituary?

In general, it's not recommended to write an anonymous obituary. Obituaries are meant to be authentic tributes that come from people who knew and loved the deceased. Anonymous submissions may not be accepted by publications or platforms.

How do I deal with conflicting opinions about what should be included in an obituary?

In cases where there are differing opinions within the family or among friends, try to find common ground and focus on celebrating the deceased person's life rather than dwelling on disagreements.

Can I include pets in an obituary?

Yes! Many people consider their pets to be part of their family. Including them in an obituary can be a touching way to acknowledge their importance in the deceased person's life.

What if I'm unsure about what information to include in an obituary?

Drafting an obituary can be overwhelming. Don't hesitate to reach out to friends, family members, or even professionals like funeral directors or grief counselors for guidance and support.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?

Absolutely! Social media platforms can be effective channels for sharing news of a loved one's passing and reaching a wider audience. Just be mindful of privacy settings and respect for those who may not want to receive this type of news via social media.
