He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Patricia Prine Long, three children, Margie A. Walker, Lisa L. Seward (Tony), and James M. Long, III. Seven grandchildren, Rhyne A. Seward, Christopher S. Walker, Jeremy L. Seward (Lauren), James M. Long, IV (Haley), Matthew J. Walker (Madeline), Jacob E. Walker (Madison), and Adam W. Seward. Four great-grandchildren, Axyl, Arabella, Kinsley, and Claire. A sister, Jennifer L. Snyder, a niece and several great nieces and nephews.

A life-long resident of Wakefield, Jim was a member of Living Hope Community Fellowship, where he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher for the adult class. He was a devoted father and grandfather and could be found at all of his grandchildren’s extra-curricular activities. He was dedicated to church and community, making himself available for numerous activities. His unwavering faith led him to serve youth ministries in several churches.

He retired from Federal Bureau of Prisons and Prince George Electric. Jim was a talented and well- respected mechanic; this was his profession and passion from the time that he was 14 years old. He was always willing to pass his knowledge to his son and grandsons.

Jim will be greatly missed by his wife, family and community.

Carolyn Brittle Boykin - March 29, 1938 - February 15, 2024

Obituary Preview: Carolyn Faison Brittle was born at home with her loving family around her in Richmond, Virginia on March 29, 1938. Early on the morning of February 15, 2024, she departed this life from home with her loving husband, daughter, and son at her side. In between her arrival into this life and her departure from it, Carolyn exemplified a faithful life well-lived.

Carolyn was the third of four children and only daughter born to Gilbert Cephas Brittle and Catherine Barrett Brittle. When Carolyn was five years old, the family moved from Richmond to Dendron, Virginia. During the family’s year-long residency there, two neighbors gave Carolyn sewing lessons, which sparked a life-long joy of sewing. Her skill increased as Carolyn grew, and by her teen years, Carolyn could see a dress in a store and replicate it at home without a pattern.

Not long after Carolyn turned six years old, the Brittle family of six (including brothers Gilbert, Earl, and Charles) moved to the farm owned by her maternal grandparents, George and Carrie Barrett, located just outside of Wakefield, Virginia, to care for them and to help them farm. The farm is where Carolyn would put down roots and the place that she would think of as home for the rest of her life.

Carolyn played basketball in high school and began dating a young Navy veteran and local farmer named Nelson Boykin. After high school Carolyn studied Home Economics at Longwood College with the plan to become a home economics teacher. However, college opened her eyes to new possibilities, and she subsequently became interested in bookkeeping.

Carolyn and Nelson were married on May 16, 1959, and began a love story that would last for almost 65 years. In the early years of their marriage, Carolyn worked at the Talley Neon Company in Richmond. The couple settled in western Henrico County, just outside of Richmond. While Nelson was away working as a fire fighter and part-time grocery clerk, Carolyn worked to make a comfortable home for him and their baby daughter, Kimberly Lynn, who was born in 1963. Nelson’s mother, Fannie, eventually came to live with the young family after her husband passed away, and Carolyn was a caregiver for her as well. In 1971, baby Kevin Page arrived and brought with him great joy and new challenges.

Since childhood, home, family, and her faith in Jesus Christ were at the center of Carolyn’s life. She loved her Lord and her church family at Mount Vernon Baptist Church, where she served the Lord and others in many ways for more than 60 years.

Once Kim and Kevin were in school, Carolyn began to work part-year at various tax services. She excelled at preparing taxes and eventually opened her own business, which she later sold to W. S. Logan, where she would work until her retirement.

Carolyn joyfully welcomed new members to the family when Kim married Paul Eskridge in 1986 and when Kevin married Kim O’Neal in 2000, and her joy was complete when grandchildren arrived: Caryne, Cole, and Kyle Eskridge and Ashley and Ava Boykin.

Carolyn battled cancer for 22 years; breast, followed by multiple myeloma and ultimately pancreatic. Throughout that time, Carolyn’s faith and resolve grew even stronger, and she found ways to flourish and to help others who were also suffering with cancer. She led support groups and mentored other patients throughout their cancer journeys.

When Carolyn left her earthly home, she went to a place where there is no cancer, no chemo, and no strokes, only complete healing and joy in the One who loves her perfectly. She is finally at her truest home. “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.” –John 14:1 – 3

A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 23, 2024 at 11 AM at Mount Vernon Baptist Church, 11220 Nuckols Rd., Glen Allen, VA 23059, with a reception to follow in the church fellowship hall. A graveside service will be conducted on Saturday, February 24, 2024 at 11 AM in the Wakefield Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday, February 24, 2024 from 10 to 10:45 AM at R.W. He retired from Sears in Colonial Heights as a sales manager in the auto service center and a former realtor with Hampton Roads Real Estate. Steven was an alumni of Tidewater Community College with additional studies at UVA, Charlottesville with GRI designation.

He is survived by his wife JoAnne Clark McCarthy; brother, David Herman McCarthy (Donna); several nieces and nephews and his canine “fur babies” Taylor and Lucy Lu “Lulu”.

A celebration of life ceremony will be held Tuesday, February 13, 2024 at 11am in the Wakefield United Methodist Church with Rev. Glenn Riggs officiating. Interment will follow in the Wakefield Cemetery. The family will receive friends for a reception in the church social hall following the service.

The family request food items, if desired, please be given to the church for the reception and not carried to the home.

He is survived by his wife, Ann Joyner Cass, to whom he was devoted throughout their long-lasting 59 years of marriage. His memory will also be kept alive by his loving sons, Mark Spencer Cass and Donald Matthew Cass (Sarah Elizabeth Cass).

John Eddie took great pride in his grandchildren, Laura Ann Cass (Tyler Colby O'Neill) and Thomas James Cass. He also leaves behind 4 great-grandchildren, Addison Elizabeth, Nathaniel Lee, Cora Lorene Elizabeth, and Reagan Delaney who were the absolute light of his life.

John Eddie has been reunited with those who passed before him, including his father Jack Cass, and his mother Anna Bates Cass. He also joins his siblings, Grace Lorene Cass Lanier, (MM1) James Winford Cass, and Thomas Lee Cass in eternal rest.

Noblitt of Port Clinton, Ohio; and the late Mr. and Mrs. James Karmogiannis of Lorain, Ohio. He was the son-in-law of the late Harold Lane Chambers, Jr. of Waverly, Virginia.

Kip was a loving husband, father, and friend. He was a 1979 graduate of Colonial Heights High School. He was an operator for over thirty years at Honeywell in Chesterfield. Kip was the proud owner of Spring Branch Farms in Waverly. He loved the farm, where he supported the love of his life, June, with cattle farming. Kip was a member of his family hunt club, fondly called “The Shack” and enjoyed all things outdoors, particularly deer hunting and fishing. He was exceptionally skilled at making fishing lures. Kip was extremely talented in building and crafting traditional bows from scratch. He took great pride in designing and crafting traditional archery, as well as repairing and sighting archery.

He is survived by his wife of over thirty-two years, June Chambers Noblitt of Waverly; his son, Cody Lee Noblitt of Dinwiddie, his parents, retired LtCol Richard “Dick” C. Noblitt, Jr. and Mary “Karmy” Karmogiannis Noblitt of Chester, Virginia; his sister, Kally Noblitt McGeehan and husband, Mike of The Colony, Texas; his niece, Olivia, and nephew, Nick, wife, Brittany, and a great niece, Naya, of Oak Point, Texas; mother–in-law, Linda Harrup Chambers of Waverly; sister-in-law Pam Carr and husband Brian of Disputanta; brother-in-law, Lane Chambers and wife Frances of Wakefield; as well as many special nieces, nephews, and friends.

Born on December 22, 1930, Barbara was the daughter of the late George Robert Ashby and Nellie Stancell Ashby. She was also predeceased by her two siblings, Jeanette A. Taylor and George R. “Bill” Ashby, Jr. Barbara was born in Richmond, Virginia and raised there as well as Triangle, Virginia. She graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond, and attended MCV School of Nursing until she met and married the love of her life, Carl, in 1952 and moved to Sussex Courthouse.

Barbara was a homemaker, talented beyond measure. She mastered every needlecraft imaginable; was an excellent cook; enjoyed reading, travelling and painting; and mostly gardening and flower arranging. She studied with the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs to become a Master Flower Show Judge. Barbara loved digging in the dirt to plant another shrub or flower to use in arrangements and had been active in several garden clubs.

Mrs. Prince was a devoted caregiver to her husband during his long illness until his death in 1994. They enjoyed 42 years of marriage. Barbara is survived by one daughter, Jeanne P. Emmerson and her husband, Richard. She was “Ba” to her two loving grandchildren, Carly Jane Emmerson (Thomas Hite) and Hunt Emmerson (Priscilla) and her two precious great grandchildren, Briggs Ashby Harrell and Rhett Emmerson. She was also “Aunt Bobbie” to several nieces and nephews, one devoted, Leslie Lee Kellenberger. The family wishes to thank the caregivers of The Village at Woods Edge, East Pavilion and Gentiva Hospice, for their help in her later years of life, as she made the move to Franklin, Virginia. Barbara tried to remain as independent as possible, despite her challenges with loss of sight.

Betty was an endearing wife, mother, and grandmother. Her world revolved around her family. She married her first love and they spent over 54 years together creating their happily ever after. She was a natural when it came to caring for people. She adored her grandchildren and quickly became "Gram" to anyone who interacted with her. She could warm any heart with a quick "hey baby." Betty found joy in family time, traveling (only by car though!), gardening, dancing, music, art, baking, and watching movies. She loved visiting her brother in Appomattox and going to the apple orchard. Betty cherished "card night" with Winky and their friends. Later in life, she enjoyed playing cards with her girlfriends. Betty attended Waverly United Methodist Church as long as she was able. She was eager to participate in community volunteer efforts. She devoted her entire life to caring for everyone but never expected anything in return. She never fully realized the impact she had on others, and our memories of her gentle, kind, and sweet soul will be forever treasured.
