Obituary Preview: Joan Louise Onopa (73) of Pottstown, PA, passed peacefully on February 19th, 2024 at Paoli hospital with her husband’s hand in hers surrounded by her children. She leaves behind her beautiful spirit, her vigor, her smile, her signature dance move, her many dear friends, a loving family, and thousands of strangers turned friends that have shared their story with her over the years.
The visitation and memorial service will be held at R. Strunk Funeral Home in Phoenixville, PA on Tuesday, February 27th, 2024.
We welcome family & friends to join us for visitation beginning at 10:30am with a formal memorial service to follow at 12:30pm. Burial will be at a future date for the immediate family. Joan’s memorial service will be an opportunity to grieve together, to honor a life well lived, to share our memories, and to remember a beautiful, strong, intelligent, and passionate individual. We welcome you to join us dressed in vibrant colors - in memory of a vibrant woman.
Joan was born in Bethlehem, PA to Julia & Maurice Postupack on January 8th, 1951. She lived in a loving home with her siblings; Mary Jane, Olga, Gloria, and Carl. She went to Freedom High School and graduated in 1968. She went on to earn her bachelor’s degree from Penn State University where she met her future husband and forever best friend, Lenny Onopa. After months of friendship, a trip to Fort Lauderdale sparked a love story that would only be rivaled by romantic comedies and epic romance novels. Beginning their life together, Joan and Lenny moved to Bloomington, Indiana where she received her Master of Social Work from Indiana University. She dedicated her life to her work in this field - serving her patients and fighting for the care that they deserved. She was active on United Way boards and various community organizations. She was a lover of music and dance - with a playlist that ranged from Crosby Stills & Nash to her favorite songbird, Ed Sheeran. Joan began to refine her signature dance move early on. In order to do so, she committed to never missing a party…mastery requires dedication. Here is a link to watch our tribute to her dances. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Xtv_mdqtuk
Her hands were always creating.. beautiful stained glass art, crocheted gloves, and a garden for her orchids. She took immense pride in her Ukrainian heritage and honored the many unique holiday traditions. She had a passion for travel and cherished her annual beach trips to Rehoboth with her family. She would sit in the sun for hours - listening to the ocean with her husband - eating red licorice & peanut M&M’s. Joan and Lenny’s love story and the family they have built together was Joan’s greatest accomplishment in life. She is survived by her husband Lenny, her children Justin, Morgan (Karissa), Ryan (Jenn), and her grandchildren Jaxon, Wren, Cecily, and Rafe Joan (due spring 2024)
Joan was her own. She was a fighter and knew the pain and beauty that life could bring. She shared both with the world…always saying “this is how we learn.” She was ferocious in her opinions and knew no way other than that of her truth.
In the days to come, let us honor Joan by living out the values she embodied. Let us ask questions, share stories, cherish our relationships, and approach life with the same zest and enthusiasm that she did. By doing so, we will keep her spirit alive and thriving within us and in the world around us.

Dr. John C. Moser - March 02, 1946 - April 19, 2023

Departed: 04/19/2023 (Phoenixville)
Obituary Preview: Dr. John C. Moser, 77, Philadelphia
John Moser, 77 passed away Wednesday April 19, 2023 at home.
He was born March 2, 1946 in Phoenixville, the second child and only boy of Dr. Christian Moser and Edith Moser (nee Hamel). John grew up in Spring City, and left his mark within the Springford school district as a football player, wrestler, and indispensable member of the Ferguson-Schleifert-Murtha et al. wrecking crew. His senior year was disrupted by back surgery, which left him convalescing in a body-cast and homebound for several months, likely contributing to the back issues which plagued his golden years.
After graduating from Springford High, John matriculated at Bucknell University, where he brought his irrepressible intellect, joie de vivre (expressed in Animal House-esque shenanigans as a fraternity brother) and (reportedly) profound and intuitive grasp of Chemistry. There was also something about him inventing the first skateboard, and something else about a coed in a red bra. He spent a year abroad at Aberdeen University, during which time he bested several much more experienced and determined local players in a dart tournament. His children will attest that he did have really good aim, and a knack for pulling stuff out of his ass.
After college he worked as a teacher at Devereux, where he met Mary Agnes Benke, and the two were wed August 1970. Their first child, Autumn Josephine, was born in 1972. They move to 53 New Road where John (with Aggie’s help) built their family home—demonstrating his lifelong willingness to tackle jobs for which he had zero training or qualification (see: episode cutting down tree which almost takes him out, and the DIY Sloop Entropy).
John entered Hahnemann Medical College (allopathic, not osteopathic) in 1975, graduating in 1979. Thus began his long-standing love affair with the practice of medicine. He started his practice in Morgantown and as the town’s family physician (crazy doc Moser) he commanded respect and affection, and was as apt to heal with humor as with medicine. He also taught and mentored a plethora of medical students and ARNPS, thus creating a legacy of healing while having fun.
With home built and first child under-belt, John and Aggie continued to build both the family (Christian in 1977, and Damian in 1979), and the house – adding a room, garage, shed, or hut approximately every 3-5 years. This was necessary to accommodate the growing family and the proliferation of once used items. In his spare time John engaged in the classic doctor hobbies of skiing, golfing and sailing, expressing his inspired if occasionally reckless approach to life in drunken ski weekends, sailing adventures, and Sunday worship of the God of par. He maintained a thriving medical practice, providing for both his family and his patients, and adding fun and excitement to the lives of those around him throughout. John and Aggie divorced in 2012. He then wed Amy Smith in 2013: his second marriage ended a few years before his death. His final years were spent winding down his practice of medicine, sailing, and coping with disability attributed in part to his previous back injury
He leaves behind his three children: Christian Moser (wife, Christelle), Damian Moser (wife, Sarah) Autumn Moser (husband, Chuck), two grandchildren: Charles and Maxwell; two sisters: Margaret Moser Munz and Christine Moser Nelligan; many nieces and nephews, and a slew of friends, patients, and neighbors. He is predeceased by his sister Elizabeth (Moser) DeMutis, and nephew Jonathan Munz.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 3:00 PM Saturday, May 13, 2023 in the R. Strunk Funeral Home 400 Main Street, Phoenixville, PA 19460, with visitation beginning around 2pm.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It may also include information about their family, accomplishments, and funeral or memorial services.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to share the news of a loved one's passing with friends, family, and community members. They provide an opportunity to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important details about funeral arrangements and how to pay respects.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend writes an obituary, although it can also be written by a funeral home or other third party. The writer should have a good understanding of the deceased person's life and be able to convey their personality, accomplishments, and relationships.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It may also include information about their family, education, career, hobbies, and achievements. Additionally, it should include details about funeral or memorial services, including dates, times, and locations.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the individual's life. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a few paragraphs. Aim for a length that does justice to the person's life without overwhelming readers.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the notice and help readers remember the person. Be sure to check with the publication for any specific guidelines or restrictions on photo submissions.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

The process for submitting an obituary varies depending on the publication or platform. Typically, you'll need to provide the written text and any accompanying photos, along with payment for the notice (if applicable). Check the publication's website or contact their obituary department for specific instructions.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, location, and length of the notice. Some newspapers offer free or low-cost options for basic notices, while others may charge several hundred dollars for longer or more elaborate notices. Online platforms may also offer different pricing tiers or packages.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to ensure that their life is represented accurately and authentically. This can also be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on one's accomplishments and values.

What is a self-written obituary called?

A self-written obituary is sometimes referred to as an "autobit" or "self-obit." This practice has gained popularity in recent years as people seek greater control over how they are remembered after death.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can search for old obituaries through online archives, genealogy websites, or local libraries. Many newspapers also maintain archives of past issues that can be searched by date or keyword. Additionally, some websites specialize in aggregating historical obituaries from various sources.

Can I reprint an obituary from another source?

In general, it's best to obtain permission from the original publisher before reprinting an obituary from another source. However, if the original publication is no longer in business or has granted permission for republication, you may be able to reuse the content with proper attribution.

What is a death notice versus an obituary?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, often including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is typically longer and provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber or formal. Including humorous stories or anecdotes can help capture the personality and spirit of the deceased person.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive details about the person's life or death that you're unsure about sharing publicly, consider consulting with family members or close friends before including them in the obituary. Remember that the goal is to honor and celebrate the person's life.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial information in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial funds in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to continue the person's legacy and support causes they cared about.

How do I proofread an obituary for errors?

Carefully review the text for spelling, grammar, and factual errors before submitting it for publication. Consider having multiple people review the draft to catch any mistakes or omissions.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

This may depend on the publication's policies and deadlines. If possible, corrections can usually be made before publication; however, once it's printed or posted online, changes may not be feasible.

What is a living obituary?

A living obituary is a celebration of someone's life while they are still alive. This can take many forms, such as a birthday tribute or anniversary celebration. It's a way to honor someone's accomplishments and relationships while they can still appreciate it.

Can I write an obituary for a pet?

Yes! Many people choose to write tributes or memorials for beloved pets that have passed away. These can be shared with friends and family online or in print.

How do I cope with writing an obituary during a difficult time?

Writing an obituary can be an emotional challenge, especially when grieving the loss of a loved one. Take your time, gather support from others if needed, and focus on celebrating the person's life rather than dwelling on their passing.

Are there any specific cultural or religious considerations when writing an obituary?

Yes! Different cultures and religions have unique customs and traditions surrounding death announcements. Be respectful of these differences and consult with family members or community leaders if necessary.

Can I include quotes or poems in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes, poems, or lyrics can add depth and meaning to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with the person's personality or legacy.

How do I preserve an online obituary over time?

Saving a copy of the online obituary as a PDF or screenshot can help preserve it for future generations. You may also consider printing out copies for personal keepsakes or scrapbooks.
