Obituary Preview: Dottie Harris Speath was born in Leesville, South Carolina to the proud parents of the late Leon “Son” Crusau and the late Mary Hair Harris on February 8, 1945.  She was the fourth of six children (two of which have passed).  Dottie accepted Jesus Christ at a young age at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina.
Dottie attended Twin City High School in Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina, where she was an avid learner.
She later moved to New York City to join her two eldest siblings for better work opportunities.
Dottie met and was smitten by her husband, Richard T. Speath.  They were married on April 28, 1979, for forty-four plus years.
She moved and resided in Maryland with her husband Richard and they built a strong foundation together.
She worked diligently within the Trucking Industries/Logistics for 50+ years.  Dottie had exceptional work ethic and always took pride in a job well done.
In spite of Dottie’s illness, she continued to stay connected to God and she was adamant about not missing live stream worship services every Sunday and during the week.  Dottie’s faith in God was evident.  Dottie was a sweet, sweet soul and she transitioned peacefully.
Dottie H. Speath touched many lives, is dearly loved, and she will be dearly missed.  She leaves to mourn her passing:  her loving husband, Richard T. Speath of Hanover, Maryland; two brothers, David E. Harris and Joseph C. Harris, both of Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina; one sister, Rev. Dorothy H. Caldwell (Bennie) of Columbia, South Carolina; her niece/goddaughter; Sarah Maria Campbell (Colin) of Queens, New York; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, other relatives and many friends, all of whom she dearly loved.

Richard was educated in the public schools of Lexington County, South Carolina, graduating from Twin City High School, Class of 1966.  He was a member of Poplar Branch Baptist Church where he served as a Trustee.
In Richard’s earlier years, he served as a police officer for the Town of Batesburg-Leesville.  After leaving the police department, he became a self-employed painter.
He was preceded in death by his brother Lorenzo West, Jr.

Ella "Kat" Katherine Mingo - August 25, 1951 - December 08, 2023

Obituary Preview: Ella K. Speach Mingo was a daughter of the late Johnnie and Mamie L. Speach.  God called Kathy home on Friday, December 8, 2023.
Kat, as she was affectionately known, was born August 25, 1951 in Leesville, South Carolina.  She was blessed to grow up with two biological sisters, Mary R. Speach and Johnnie M. Speach Lemon, and a step-sister, Nora Anderson.
Kat gave her life to God and joined Friendship Missionary Baptist Church at the age of 12 years old.  She completed grades 1-12 in the public schools of Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina.  She had a successful career and retired from Richland County School District 1 after over 30 years.  She successfully worked in the federal system for over 4 years.  Kat made positive impact with the youth by volunteering and teaching Bible study at the Department of Juvenile Justice for over 12 years.  She also taught Sunday school and served as a choir assistant director at Friendship Baptist Church in the mid-80s.  Kathy participated in church choir and the Friendship Musical Choir, at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church.  Although she was a member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, she had an “honorary” membership with St. Mark Baptist Church.  She was part of the civil rights movement back in the late 60s and 70s.  She successfully participated in integrating the Batesburg-Leesville schools.  She successfully served as a Town Council Member from 2011-2015.  She was a football fanatic – college or NFL and was the ultimate Dallas Cowboys fan.  Kathy married the late Sergeant First Class (Retired) Julian Ray Mingo, on July 19, 1975.
She is survived by two daughters, Maj. (Ret.) Christa M. Mingo-Walker and MSgt. (Ret.) Kimberly Mingo; a son-in-law, 1st Sgt. (Ret.) Harold A. Walker; three biological granddaughters, Jordin Mingo, Desr’Ray Dunbar-Mingo and Alexis Walker-Mingo; bonus grandsons, Allen Walker, Julian Walker and Eric Cox; bonus great-grandson, Jion Walker; two sisters, Mary R. Speach and Johnnie M. Speach Lemon.  She was blessed to have wonderful nieces, nephews and an abundance of cousins; one adopted sister, Robbie Banks; two adopted brothers, Eddie Leon Gantt and Michael Banks and one adopted son, CSM (Ret.) Ethan Dunbar.

Obituary Preview: Bettye Catherine Coleman Guyton was the daughter of the late John Henry and Butler Mae Coleman.  She was born August 19, 1943 in Saluda County, South Carolina.  Bettye entered her eternal rest on December 3, 2023 at the Aiken Regional Medical Center.
She was married to Reverend Eugene Guyton for 51 years.  She was educated at Twin City High School, Batesburg, South Carolina.
Bettye joined Philippi Baptist Church at an early age.  She was closely affiliated with Friendship and Baughmanville Baptist Churches throughout the years.  She faithfully served as a Deaconess and was former First Lady of Union Hill Missionary Baptist Church for 11 years.
She started her working career at Owens Corning Fiberglass in Aiken, South Carolina where she met her husband, Eugene Guyton.  She also had a passion and love for interior design.  Her love for decorating prompted her to join Home Interiors, Inc. as a Sales Associate and she ultimately progressed to the Director’s level.
Bettye was preceded in death by her parents and her three brothers, Randolph, Joe Henry and Nathaniel Coleman.
She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 51 years, Reverend Eugene Guyton of Wagener, South Carolina; two daughters, Donna (Darrell) Dandy of Aiken, South Carolina and Tressy Davenport of Columbia, South Carolina; one son, LeMel Guyton of the home; four granddaughters, Brandi Davenport, Braya Dandy, Madison Guyton and Taylor Davenport; one great-grandson, Brandon Barnes, all of whom she loved and cherished dearly.
She is also survived by five sisters, Louise Singleton, Mary Coleman, Annie Drakeford, Patricia Richardson and Deloris (Bill) Whitney; one brother, Charlie (Johnnie) Coleman; two sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law.
She will be missed by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Martin and Amick Farms.
Louis was preceded in death by his mother, Ozie Lee Williams; a brother, Leroy Williams, Sr.; an aunt, Erline Williams; two close cousins, Richard Williams and Johnny Rowe.
Louis leaves to cherish his precious memories:  a nephew, Leroy (Wendy) Williams of Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina; a niece, Alice Jones of Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina; great-nephews, Akeem Jones, Davonté Jones, Desmond Williams, LaTrell Williams, JaMarcus Williams and DaMarcus Williams, all of Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina and a host of family and friends to cherish his memories.

Herman Taliferro Quick, III - September 09, 1968 - October 18, 2023

Obituary Preview: Herman Taliferro Quick, III was born on September 9th, 1968 in Lexington County, South Carolina to Sylvia Jeanette Baston Quick and the late Herman Quick, Jr.  He departed this earthly life on Wednesday, October 18th, 2023.
At an early age, he joined the Friendship Baptist Church in Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina where he built his strong Christian foundation by participating in Sunday school. Being raised in a family of gospel singers, he discovered his love for music at a young age singing in the church youth choir.  He also shared the song in his heart and soul as a member of both the chorus and marching band at Batesburg Leesville High.  He also played the lead guitar for the sensational family gospel group Little Desi and the Sons of Faith.
After earning his high school diploma, he served our country as a proud member of the United States Army Reserve.  His legacy of service with honor and integrity earned him several military commendations including the Army Achievement Medal, Army Service Ribbon, and Army Lapel Button.
Upon completion of his military service, he entered the field of customer service where he shined as brilliantly as his Army medals. As an employee at Blue Cross and Blue Shield he was routinely recognized for his exemplary customer service, excellent effectiveness as a team player, and genuine love for helping others. He continued to spread this love as he assisted countless customers in achieving the American Dream of homeownership as a Regional Assistance Sales Manager for Fleet Mortgage.
Always dedicated to growing and pursuing new challenges, he was awarded student of the year from Florence-Darlington Technical College in 2006 and in 2010, he earned his bachelor’s degree from South University.
Herman T.  won the hearts of his family and friends with his quick wit, infectious laugh, and charming smile. Throughout his life he was a bright light that shared his huge heart and bold, bodacious personality.  He loved gospel music and could often be found listening to some of his favorite “old school” artist, The Swannie Quintet (Percy), Tommie Ellison and the Five Blind Boys.
Herman loved sports; as a member of the Leesville Golden Eagles, he was a baseball standout and earned the beloved nickname “Slime Time”, he also enjoyed refereeing High School Basketball.  On any given Sunday after church service, you could find Herman cheering on his favorite football team the Denver Broncos, decked out from head to toe in team colors and gear.  His smile, his inviting eyes, his warm humor, his grand presence, his infectious vivacity left an unforgettable imprint upon the hearts and minds of every person he met—truly unforgettable.
He was preceded in death by this father, Herman Quick, Jr.; a nephew, Ra’Jae Quick; paternal grandparents, Herman Sr. and Clara Quick; maternal grandparents, Reverend Booker T. Sr. and Dora Baston.
He is survived by his wife, Nikena Quick; children, Nakalah, Briana and Brian Sparks; Tandrea Stroman and D’Juan Morgan of Columbia, South Carolina; mother, Sylvia J. Quick (Bennie); brothers, Corwin Quick of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Andrea M. Quick (Ericka) of  White Plains,  Maryland, Desmond R. Annie was educated in the public schools of Lexington County, South Carolina.  She joined Tabernacle Baptist Church at an early age.  Annie moved to New Haven, Connecticut and lived there for many years.  She was a member of the Order of Eastern Stars in New Haven.  Upon retirement, she relocated back to South Carolina and rejoined Tabernacle Baptist Church.
In addition to both of her parents, Annie was preceded in death by two sons, Dennis Williams, Sr. and Darrell Williams; six brothers, James Williams, Joel Williams, John Cannon, Larry Williams, Joe Williams and Lucious Landy; four sisters, Phyllis Cannon-Washington, Wilma Cannon, Ora Mae Cannon and Ann Williams; three brothers-in-law, Ulysses Cannon, James Hendrix, Sr. and Arthur Adams; three sisters-in-law, Hattie Williams, Faith Landy and Cora L. Clark-Williams.
Those left to cherish her memories and celebrate her life include:  two sons, Al Williams of New Haven, Connecticut and Desi Williams of Lexington, South Carolina; one daughter, Dr. Aissa Williams of Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina; four brothers, Johnnie (Patricia) Williams and Wilbur Cannon, both of Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina, Walter Williams of Little Mountain, South Carolina and Andy Williams of Chapin, South Carolina; three sisters, Mary Adams of Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina; Frances Hendrix of Gilbert, South Carolina and Carrie Lowman of Lexington, South Carolina; sixteen grandchildren, thirty-six great-grandchildren, eleven great-great-grandchildren, several God-children whom she loved dearly, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends who will truly miss her.

Rosie Lee Summers - October 01, 1928 - September 17, 2023

Obituary Preview: Rosie Lee Edmond Summers, 94, affectionally known as “Elwee” by her family and friends and “Summer Time” by her Pastor, was born October 1, 1928 in Leesville, South Carolina. She transitioned to her heavenly home on Sunday, September 17, 2023 just two weeks prior to celebrating her 95th birthday.
Rosie Lee accepted Christ at an early age and joined St. Matthew C.M.E. Church in Leesville, South Carolina.  After she graduated from Hampton High, she attended Bettis Academy, and graduated from Allen University in 1961.
Though South Carolina always remained home, she lived in Connecticut, Virginia, and finally made Maryland her home for over 54 years. There, she joined First Baptist Church of Highland Park November 1, 1975.  Rosie Lee loved her church and she served faithfully in the follow ministries:  October Birthday Ministry, Missionary Ministry, Pastor Partners, Pictorial Ministry, The Installation Committee of Dr. Henry P. Davis III, Pastor, Journal Committee, Tutorial Ministry, Lucy Wyatt Choir, Credit Union Committee, Sunday Biblical Institute (Student), and Vacation Bible School.
Rosie Lee was a dedicated and outstanding teacher and an asset to the Prince George’s County School Systems where she began her teaching career at William Paca Elementary School in 1969 and taught at Morningside Elementary for 18 years.  She retired from the Prince George’s County School Systems July 1, 1992.  After retiring at the age of 64, because she loved children dearly she returned as a full-time Substitute Teacher and worked until she was 80 years old.
Rosie Lee was preceded in death by her parents, Stannie and Alberta Edmond; brothers, M.C. Edmond, Lawrence P. Edmond and a sister, Dorothy R. Cornelius. Her life is a beautiful legacy to be celebrated by her children, John W. (Diane) Summers, Carolyn S. (Freddie) Derrick, Randy C. Summers, Cynthia D. Summers; her grandchildren, Kenya (Todd) White, Pamela Summers, Maurice (LaTonya) Derrick, Tiffany A. Summers, Courtney Guntz-Summers, Erin W. Obituary Preview: Catherine Padgett Gary, 92, daughter of the late William and Eva Padgett, was born May 19, 1931 in Edgefield, South Carolina. She was called from labor to reward on Saturday, September 9, 2023 at her home in Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina.  She was the last of 13 siblings.  She was raised in Ridge Spring, South Carolina.
Mrs. Gary was married to the late Marion D. Gary. Mrs. Gary moved with her husband and daughter from South Carolina to Hempstead, New York in 1953.  A few years later, they settled in Roosevelt, New York.  Finally, Mr. and Mrs. Gary retired and relocated back to Batesburg-Leesville in 2004.
Mrs. Gary graduated from Ridge Hill High School in Ridge Spring, South Carolina.  She later worked in the cafeteria for the Roosevelt Union Free School District in Roosevelt, New York. Her last position was as a maintenance worker for The State University of New York at Old Westbury in Old Westbury, New York.
Mrs. Gary was a member of Holy Trinity Baptist Church, Roosevelt, New York.  She was a Deaconess at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Medford, New York.  After returning to Batesburg-Leesville, she became a member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church.  She was a member of the Sanctuary Choir, Bryant-Hall Senior Missionary and a Deaconess.
In 1968, Catherine Gary, Estell Brown, and Carol Simpson started the Roosevelt Midget Football Cheerleaders and ran the concession stands in Roosevelt, New York.  1970-71, Catherine Gary and Carol Simpson started the Roosevelt Traveling Cheerleaders’ Division for the Traveling Biddy Basketball League.
Mrs. Gary attended President Clinton’s White House Christmas Party December 13, 1994.  During that time, she took a portrait photo with President Clinton and First Lady Hillary Clinton.  Mrs. Gary attended President Obama’s White House Christmas Party December 16, 2014.  During that time, she took a portrait photo with President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.

Ozie worked at Columbia Farms, and as a housekeeper/nanny for John & Carolyn Hendrix for many years.  She loved to be around family  and friends.  Her greatest joy was keeping her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, J.C. Alewine and three daughters, Clara Smith, Carol Ann Addy and Virginia Alewine and four sons, Clarence Alewine, Freddie Alewine, J.C. Alewine, Jr. and Terry Alewine.

Kenian loved computers and technology.  After graduating high school, he began working at Bell Atlantic, now known as Verizon, as a telephone installer.  He moved to North Carolina between 2008 and 2010 where he received a heart transplant in 2020.  Before he became ill, he was taking online classes at the University of Phoenix, receiving an Associates degree and started taking additional online classes in business management at the University of Phoenix.
Kenny’s most recent employment was with Enterprise Rent-A-Car.  He was employed there until his health began to decline.
