Robert Eugene Ryan - Unknown - April 29, 2022

Departed: 04/29/2022 (Sewickley)
Obituary Preview: Robert Eugene Ryan, of Sewickley, died on Friday, April 29, 2022. He was born in Dayton, Ohio on June 10, 1945. Most called him "Bob." He grew up in Dayton and attended St Agnes Catholic Elementary school, and Chaminade High School then attended The University of Dayton, where he graduated with a BA degree in English. Bob volunteered to serve in the Navy, where he served as Petty Officer Second Class, and fought bravely in the Vietnam War. Upon his Honorable discharge from the Navy, Bob attended Wright State University where he earned a Masters degree in Education and went on to earn his PhD in Education from Auburn University. During his career, Bob worked as an educator at the high school and college level, and later for the Department of the Navy and Internal Revenue Service, where he retired. An avid sports fan, Bob was a lifelong Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Reds fan. Bob will no doubt still be patiently waiting for his Browns to return to the Super Bowl. Bob was a loving husband and the father of four daughters, whom he adored and loved to travel to visit to help them in their various states of home renovations. In retirement, Bob was an avid writer, researcher, and always full of interest for the next new project. Easy to please, he was a rule follower, lover of words, dreamer, eternally optimistic, with small bouts of Irish melancholy that would lend to you dropping a tear in your beer as you listened to his tales of adventures and misguided relationships and wrongs. It was always easy to empathize with him, as he had a way of pulling you into his story and seeing it from his lens as one of the youngest of 8! The stories of Riverview days, the street he grew up on in Dayton included circus’, train adventures, and serving as an altar boy at St Agnes, entertained us all through the years, as his recipe for Chicken pot pie warmed the soul and heart on the coldest days of January. He loved to cook for those he loved and would often get adventurous there as well- whipping up “hash” which meant blending every leftover together and putting it on a saltine! He loved to research our ancestors and would often weave tales of time gone by and how their journey to America was fraught from Ballybunion to Dayton and the lives they made for themselves. The thrill of a good old handwritten letter from John P Ryan during the days of the civil war would entertain him for months on end! Bob was a kind, gentle soul who never thought twice about helping a friend or stranger. He always had a smile that was infectious and a kind word that was supportive. Always up for grabbing his scope, Bob was an avid birder, anywhere in the world he found himself he was always keen to identify the next new species that would add to his running list... Now at??? Whether fighting off squirrels, or identifying just the right species of gull, Bob took to this hobby teaching us not only about birds but about patience, perseverance, and pride. Bob will be remembered not only for what he accomplished during his lifetime, but also for the impact he made on all those who knew him. From his initial strong and welcoming handshake to his warm hug goodbye, Bob never met a stranger and will be missed by many who loved and cared for him. What would make him happiest, would be to pour yourself a tall one, and reminisce about life’s lessons and cheers to him in the afterlife. Bob was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus, serving as past Grand Knight and District Deputy. He was preceded in death by 5 older brothers (who he mostly admired and also gave him hell and much competition), his parents Eugene and Margaret Ryan (who he loved and revered). He is survived by his beloved wife Eileen Ryan, brother and his wife Larry & Deb Ryan and sister, Jean “Sis” Ryan, both of Dayton, Ohio. Bob is also survived by his four daughters, Casi & Curt Hollmann (Franklin, TN), Marci Ryan & Sri Alapati (Cary, NC), Michelle & Michael Knight (Clearwater, FL) Emily Phillips (Washington DC), stepson Rick & Lizann Killmeyer (Philadelphia, PA) and 10 grandchildren- Elizabeth Hollmann, Nate Hollmann, Jon Hollmann, Rebekah Hollmann, David Hollmann, Kaeshev Alapati, Hanorah Alapati, Samantha Knight, Declan and Maeve Kilmeyer. For Bob: Go Reds!, War Eagle!, and Let's go, Brownies! We love you & always will.  Friends received at R. D. Copeland, Irvine Chapel, Sewickley, 702 Beaver Street, Sewickley 2 – 4 and 6 – 8 pm on Wednesday where a funeral prayer will be held on Thursday at 10 am followed by a Funeral Mass in St. James Church at 10:30 am.  Contributions may be made to the Knights of Columbus Charities, Ukraine Support Fund at KOC.org or the Learning Tree Farm, 3376 S. Union Rd., Dayton, OH 45417, or at learningtreefarm.org.

Susan R. Kopf - August 14, 1944 - January 29, 2022

Departed: 01/29/2022 (Sewickley)
Obituary Preview: Adored and admired by all who knew her, Susan R. Kopf, age 77, died at home on January 29, 2022, after a valiant struggle with cancer.
Susie was born on August 14, 1944, in Camden, New Jersey, and raised in nearby Haddonfield.  Upon graduation from Pine Manor Junior College in Massachusetts, she went to work as a legal secretary at the Philadelphia law firm of Drinker, Biddle, and Reath.  While at Drinker, Susie was introduced to Robert Y. Kopf, Jr., a student at Princeton University, by one of his roommates.  After this blind date Susie and Bob were inseparable for the ensuing 57 years.
Preceded in death by her father, Thomas H. Rowland (who died heroically in World War Two) and her mother, Virginia W. Sterner, Susie is survived by her devoted husband Bob and her three children, Robert Y. (Martina) Kopf III, Thomas R. (Celeste) Kopf, and Margaret K. (Christopher) Standish.  Additionally, Susie is survived by her four fabulous grandchildren, Robert Y. (Kirsten) Kopf IV, Jarrod F. Kopf, Maxime E. Kopf and Silas O. Kopf.
After spending three happy years in Nashville, Tennessee, while Bob was a student at Vanderbilt Law School, Susie and Bob moved to Sewickley, Pennsylvania, in 1969.  Quickly becoming an integral part of the community, Susie soon was a part owner of the Porcupine Needlepoint Shop and served on the charitable boards of The Child Health Association of Sewickley, the Sewickley YMCA, and Sewickley Academy.  An excellent athlete, she excelled in golf, tennis, paddle tennis and fly fishing.  Susie saved her most beautiful dry fly casts for the wild rainbow trout in her beloved Big Wood River near her vacation home in central Idaho.  The care of her many dogs and passions for cooking and gardening (and, at least sometimes, the Pittsburgh Penguins) were other components of Susie’s busy life.
The overarching characteristic consistently displayed by Susie was an unwavering selflessness.  Undoubtedly, this explains her extraordinarily large and loyal circle of friends.

John Allen Shoener, MD - Unknown - January 26, 2022

Departed: 01/26/2022 (Sewickley)
Obituary Preview: Shoener, John Allen; Known as Jack, died on Wednesday, January 26, 2022, 11 days before his 92nd birthday. Born February 6, 1930 to Allen Theodore and Hilda Hinchliffe Shoener, he descended through his mother from the patriot Francis Hopkinson, who signed the Declaration of Independence and designed the American Flag. He grew up in Philadelphia with a sister Jean Schramp (1920 - 2019). Upon graduation from Bucknell University in 1951, he attended Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He spent summers working in Eagles Mere Resort where he met his wife, Margaret "Peggy" Singley (1931 - 2017) from Williamsport, PA. They married in 1953 and started a family. He enlisted in the Air Force and did his residency and fellowship at Denver General Hospital, Colorado and then in 1960 was transferred to Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX. As a cardiologist and Captain, he had the thrilling privilege of doing physicals for the Mercury Seven Astronauts before their flights between 1961-1963. He left the Air Force in 1965 as a Major. At that time, he was offered a position at Sewickley Valley Hospital as its first Cardiologist. He moved his family in a station wagon across the country to Sewickley where he worked for the next 30 years. He formed a partnership with Dr. Alfred Doyle, sealing the relationship with a handshake, combining unlikely specialties for decades. Sewickley Valley Hospital became his second home as he spent long hours, weekends and holidays, caring for patients and consoling family members. He loved his partners and the hospital staff he worked with throughout his career. In 1980 he traveled to China with the first group of physicians allowed into the country as it was opening up to tourism. They shared their knowledge of medicine with their counterparts. He was touched by the eagerness of the Chinese to learn and astounded by the lack of modern equipment and techniques. He had a passion for travel, skiing, sports, reading, and martinis. Treasured family time was found on ski slopes in Vermont and then Snowmass, CO. Long days on the slopes and quiet evenings by the fire playing games or cards was where the family could have his undivided attention. He loved paddle tennis. He built a court in his backyard where many a raucous competitive match was played at all hours of the day and night. He would distract his opponents by wearing the most outrageously loud colorful pattern pants he could find. And then there was golf. He enjoyed many happy hours on golf courses at home and around the world in Hawaii, Bermuda, Ireland and elsewhere, reaffirming friendships and family ties. An avid reader, you would never find him without a book or two and a stack beside his chair waiting to be devoured. He read everything from history to mystery, love stories to travel adventures. Never musically inclined, he wanted people to know he played the accordion well in grade school. His personal quiet time was gardening. His garden was always a sea of color and his greenhouse a home to unusual plants. Most admired were his night-blooming cereus plants with flowers the size of dinner plates. He and his wife Peggy were fortunate enough to explore the world. Traveling was a passion they shared, often with their many friends and family. He is survived by his four children, Jackie (Bob Grega) Shoener of Grove City, Judy (Harton) Semple of Sewickley, Jim (Toni) Shoener of the Easterrn Shore, Maryland and Jeff (Beth) Shoener of NYC. He has 4 grandchildren, Harton Semple III, Ian Semple, Hayley Shoener, and Will Shoener. He lived long enough to meet his great-grandchild and namesake, Jack Semple, born in 2021. His love, his laugh, and all life's lessons that he passed on to his children are gifts all will remember. There will be a private service with a celebration of life in the Spring. Remembrances may be made to Heritage Valley Health System Foundation or a Sewickley organization of your choice. Arrangements entrusted to R.D. Copeland Funeral Home-Irvine Chapel, Sewickley.

Kenneth "Ken" C. Ruzich - October 27, 1932 - December 10, 2021

Departed: 12/10/2021 (Sewickley)
Obituary Preview: Kenneth (Ken) C. Ruzich, beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed to his next and eternal life peacefully on December 10, 2021. Born in Chicago, Illinois, on October 27, 1932, he was the son of Irene and George Ruzich. Ken graduated from Hinsdale High School, where he was a varsity athlete in basketball and baseball and captain of the football team. After graduation, he went on to proudly serve in the US Marine Corps. Returning from the service, he met the love of his life, Janet Hinckley, and charmed her with his kindness, quiet humor, and their mutual love of ice cream. They were married on a warm summer day in June of 1956, and moved to Colorado, where Ken graduated from the University of Colorado with degrees in engineering and physics. He worked for both Argonne National Lab and Westinghouse as a nuclear engineer, and the family lived in Hinsdale, IL; Monroeville, PA; and Libertyville, IL before moving to O’Hara Township, PA in 1976.
Ken had an inquisitive mind; he was an avid reader and amateur historian, always ready to share what he had recently read about Sherlock Holmes, George Washington, or the taxonomy of trees. Ken was also a creative and talented woodworker, making everything from clocks to footstools. His grandchildren, who called him “Zip” (the name he had asked his childhood friends to call him but that never caught on), remember fondly his dry sense of humor, his love of ocean swimming on beach vacations, and his dominant skill in backyard croquet tournaments.
While outwardly reserved, Ken demonstrated his selfless love for his family and his Lord with his life. His many acts of generous, thoughtful care are too numerous to count. He was a volunteer at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Pittsburgh and a member of St. Stephen’s Church in Sewickley, where he served for many years as an usher and as a recorder of the church’s history.
He is survived by his dear wife Janet; his sons and their spouses, Jeff, Scott, Gary, Mari, Andy, and Connie; and his five grandchildren, Emily, Bess, Ian, Shea, and Trevor, as well as his sisters Marilyn and Barb, and his brother, Greg.
Arrangements entrusted to R. D. Copeland, Irvine Chapel, Sewickley.

Robert Miller Gordon, Jr. - May 28, 1930 - November 11, 2021

Departed: 11/11/2021 (Sewickley)
Obituary Preview: Robert Miller Gordon Jr. died peacefully at his home surrounded by his children and his faithful dog, Jesse, on the evening of November 11, 2021 - Veteran’s Day, an appropriate day for this American patriot and Korean War veteran. Born on May 28, 1930, to Robert M. Gordon and Mary Pascoe Gordon, Bob was a true Pittsburgh boy. He grew up in Rosslyn Farms with his younger brother, best friend, and lifelong business partner, Tucker. Bob was an athlete, a scholar, a loving husband, and a wonderful father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He attended Phillips Exeter Academy and Duke University.  He was a champion wrestler throughout high school and college. He also excelled on the track where his record in the 440 hurdles stood for nearly fifty years. Bob was a member of Phi Gamma Delta and among the first Eagle Scouts in Western Pennsylvania. He married Shirley Dewis of Interlaken New Jersey, his loving wife of 64 years in 1950 and had Kathy, the first of their six children. The Korean conflict interrupted college and marriage when Bob shipped out as an ROTC first lieutenant. He returned home with Captain’s bars and was then promoted to the rank of Major to complete his reserve duty and finish college at Washington and Jefferson University. Bob took over Gordon Lubricating Company in 1962 when his father died and with the help of Tucker turned Gordon Terminal Service Company into a thriving and successful business.  But his passions were many, and his determined work ethic did not prevent him from enjoying life to the fullest. Bob had an adventurous spirit.  He was a terrific golfer, but he liked to say that he golfed because the snow melted and he couldn’t ski. He built a home in Vermont because he loved to ski.  He also enjoyed tennis, bicycling, canoeing, and hang-gliding. A natural performer, Bob loved the stage as well as the field. Other passions were his Scottish heritage and his Pittsburgh sports teams.  He traveled and danced with Shirley and skied and golfed with his kids. He adored his fourteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, and he made every special occasion memorable. Bob lived his life with integrity and a charitable heart.  He touched many lives with his joyful generosity and exuberant style.  He was a Boy Scout Leader, an Elder in his church, a mentor, and a teacher.  Bob was an insatiable learner who read Shakespeare, Milton, and Burns to his cross-eyed kids at the dinner table. Bob is survived by his children, Kathy Hilliard, John Gordon (Andree), Cricket Pylman (Rick), Petie Cooklin, and Bobby Gordon (Shadley).  Bob’s grandchildren are Colin Hilliard, Genevieve Sullivan (Mark), Emmy Gordon, Travis Gordon (Martina), Cameron Gordon, Teddy Gordon, Casey Pylman, Danny Pylman, Veronica Cooklin, Sofia Cooklin, Clara Cooklin, Alex Gordon, Elsa Gordon, and Mary Grace Gordon.  Great-grandchildren are Cayden Hilliard, Bodhi and Flora Sullivan, Danny and Mia Gordon, and Sawyer Gordon. Bob was predeceased by his wife Shirley and his son Tommy. A memorial Service will be held on Friday November 19, 2021 at 11:00 am at the Sewickley Presbyterian Church, 414 Grant Street, Sewickley, PA 15143.  Interment will be private. Remembrances may be made to Blind and Vision Rehabilitation Services of Pittsburgh, The Carnegie Free Library of Carnegie PA, and The Boy Scouts of America.   Arrangements entrusted to R. D. Copeland – Irvine Chapel, Sewickley.
