Jean Elaine Maness - May 01, 1934 - May 15, 2024

Departed: 05/15/2024 (Sycamore)
Obituary Preview: Jean Maness passed away peacefully May 15, 2024, in her Sycamore, Ill., home, which she and her husband built 65 years earlier.  She passed after a nine-year battle with "probable" Alzheimer's Disease. Despite the relentless decline caused by this devastating disease, Jean retained her loving, compassionate and cooperative personality.  Even when she could no longer express herself through words, gestures or facial expressions, her eyes and the squeeze of her hand expressed her love, recognition, comprehension and appreciation. She was a joy to care for.
Jean was born May 31, 1934, in Mayfield Township (Sycamore), to Hildur and Morris Johnson.  Jean was the ninth of twelve children born to and raised by the Johnson couple, who lived on and worked several farms in the rural area surrounding Sycamore. Life on the farm was not easy and they did not have a lot, but they had what they needed, including lots of love and fond memories. Her older siblings often said Jean and her younger siblings had it easy growing up. Perhaps by comparison there was some truth to that, but she still grew into a responsible, appreciative, caring and very hard-working adult. During her senior year of high school, she moved into town and worked at various part-time jobs to support herself while going to school.
On October 27, 1956, Jean married George Maness, a residential contractor in Sycamore. They raised five children. In 1958, Jean and George established the George Maness and Sons Construction Company, through which they subdivided, developed and built the Somonauk Meadows Subdivision on the south side of Sycamore. Later, they also established the G and J Maness Rental Property business. In 1971 Jean obtained her Real Estate Brokers License and joined the Crum Halsted Real Estate Agency in Sycamore. Jean and George made a great team and complimented each other well in marriage and in business. Jean managed the home and administrative side of things, while George handled the operation side. They also shared many of the same philosophies: Do onto others as you would have done onto you, you’re only as good as your word, a penny saved is a dollar earned, a hand up is better than a hand out and if it’s not broke don’t replace it.
In December of 2002, George suffered a stroke resulting in very limited mobility and an inability to speak or write. Jean was not one to buck authority, but when the rehab facility insisted, he be discharged to a nursing home, Jean went “against doctor’s orders” and brought him home to live out the rest of his life in the fullest way possible. Jean took exceptional care of George until the day he passed away at home in October of 2008. Jean loved and respected her husband beyond compare.
Jean never sought the spotlight and was uncomfortable being the center of attention. She instead preferred to play a supportive role in the lives of the people she cared about. If you had a need, a project to complete, or a goal to accomplish, she was always ready to jump in and help. Jean enjoyed spending time with family and the feeling of accomplishment upon the completion of a job well done, especially mowing lawns. Two of her favorite gifts were a self-propelled Husqvarna mower she received from her husband on her 70th birthday and a four-wheel drive Husqvarna mower she received from her children on her 80th birthday. Jean wore many hats and had many titles throughout her rich life. By far her favorite was grandma. Jean did enjoy hosting family holidays, the Pumpkin fest parade watch get together and the Sunday morning get-togethers, later coined “Grandma’s Church.” In her later years and prior to her husband’s stroke, they enjoyed spending the month of January at their Florida condo. Especially if any of the grandkids joined them. However, Jean was always happy to get back home to her beloved Sycamore.
Jean touched the lives of so many people. It was very common to hear someone make the comment that “Jean is a saint” or “Jean is an angel.” Often those comments were followed by an example of something Jean said or did that had a positive impacted in that person’s life. It’s doubtful Jean ever said a harsh or angry word to anyone. She probably did not even realize the impact she had. She was just being her kind, considerate, helpful and welcoming self.
Jean was the heart and soul of the Maness family. There was almost nothing she wouldn’t do for the people she loved. She rose to meet every challenge with grace, dedication and self-sacrifice. She rose to complete every day with a sense of accomplishment. Jean passed on her kindness, consideration and generosity to each and every one of her family members. Her legacy will live on within each of them.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; eight siblings, Olga Waldhier, Esther Floit, Bertil Johnson, Yngve "Morry" Johnson, Roy Johnson, Ralph Johnson, Alice Haugen, Lester Johnson; step-son, Darrell Maness; and granddog, Gabe.
Jean is survived by four children, George (Linda) Maness Jr of Sycamore, Jennifer Maness of Sycamore, Perry (Jeanne) Maness of Sycamore and Deborah (John) Pierce of Kirkland; twelve grandchildren or step-grandchildren, Christofer Maness, Rebecca Maness-Cortes, Hannah Maness-Wilson, Jason Melahn, Kelsey Halstead-Roach, Logan Halstead, Rodney Holman, Curtis Holman, Scot Collins, Melissa Maness-Therapos, Shelly Maness-Martin and Derek Maness; three siblings, Helen Morgan, Patricia Davy and Carol Zittel; 31 great- or great-great-grandchildren; and granddog, Rudy.

William E. Torrance, Sr. - December 18, 1956 - January 15, 2024

Departed: 01/15/2024 (Sycamore)
Obituary Preview: William E. “Bill” Torrance, Sr., died suddenly on January 15, 2024, after suffering heart failure, taken away too soon at the age of 67. Some people spend their life amassing wealth. Bill stored up his treasures in heaven and died a rich man. He had a genuine love for people and they for him. He was the kind of person you felt you had known all your life even if you’d only known him 15 minutes. His playful spirit made him the object of affection for most who knew him, especially the neighborhood children and his beloved grandkids. He felt it important to be a good neighbor and liked to say, “Life is hard and we are all in this together.” His capacity to love people was a gift that he shared wherever he went. Though his exterior was imposing, he quickly put people at ease with his warm and funny sense of humor, and ready hugs.
Bill was brilliant in so many ways. He had a photographic memory and viewed problems (and life) spatially. He could find perfect center by eyeballing it, know by looking how to navigate an object through a difficult space, and could fix just about anything. He never forgot a face even if it had been 50 years since he had seen that person - it was truly amazing. Under the guidance of his friend Leon, Bill mastered the art of rehabbing a large, historical home, spending more than 20 years bringing it back to its glory. Everything he did to the house was done out of love for his wife but he also enjoyed sharing the history of the house with anyone who was interested. He never hesitated to invite crowds of people in if he caught them during a guided historical tour of the neighborhood.
Bill was a gifted artist who spent his lifetime creating. He particularly enjoyed sculpture as a form of expression using whatever material was on hand. He could draw anything from memory and enjoyed welding, sculpting snow, and customizing his cars, motorcycles, and clothing. He always had a project and never hesitated to share what he made with those around him. Bill was a colorful character inside and out, reflecting his true self as an artist. He lived his life in authentic fullness, never apologizing for who he was or what he believed, including his faith in Jesus and his love for his country.
Born on December 18, 1956, to Benjamin G. and Patricia A. Torrance, Bill was the second child of eight. He cherished his family, his neighbors, his many friends, and his large extended family. He had a knack for bringing people together in a joyful, playful way. He was often seen around town riding his Harley motorcycle or cruzin’ in his blue 70’s Cadillac with a big smile, signature mustache and bandana. Bill had fun wherever he went and never missed an opportunity to ride his bike with his buds to get cheeseburgers, or gathering with high school classmates for breakfast, or making mischief with the "Main and Lincoln collective" as his neighbors were known.
In 1974 at the young age of 17, Bill met the love of his life - his “my Jan”. The first time they were together he told her he was going to marry her and then followed through with that three years later, joining Janet Bates in marriage on August 13, 1977. They moved to the Sycamore area in 1985 while attending Northern Illinois University where Bill majored in art and sculpture. He loved Sycamore and his gift for photography often captured what he treasured about it. He had an eye for seeing the incredible in the mundane and loved documenting that with his photos. Together they raised two boys who blessed them with five grandkids while enjoying a rich life together for nearly 50 years.
Bill is survived by his wife, Jan; his two sons, William (Hillary) Torrance, Jr., and Maxx (Ashley) Torrance; grandsons, Brandon Ward, William Torrance III, Carter Ward, Sam Torrance, and Eve Ellison; his mother, Patricia; his siblings, Susan Torrance, Joan Torrance, Jeannine (Devin) Larsen, Joel Torrance, Michael (Jamie) Torrance and Trisha (Willie) Torres; his God-sons, Jake Torrance and Christopher Benson; his sisters-in-law, Susan Elizondo and JoAnne (George) Adamson; 24 nieces and nephews; and Adam and Emily Jones whom he embraced and loved as his own children.
He was preceded in death by his father, Benjamin Jr.; and his brother, Benjamin, III.
Visitation will be held on January 26 from 3 to 7 p.m. at Olson-Quiram Funeral Home, 1245 Somonauk Street in Sycamore IL 60178 and a funeral will be held to celebrate his life on January 27 at Bethel Assembly of God Church, 131 Elm Street, Sycamore, at 11 a.m. with lunch to follow. Both the visitation and service are "come as you are".  The funeral service will be live streamed at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Bethel-ofSycamore/435060896515005. A memorial fund has been established to honor his life at https://www.gofundme/f/bill-torrance.
The world lost one great man.

Departed: 01/05/2024 (Sycamore)
Obituary Preview: Phillip “Phil” James Montgomery, 41, of Kirkland, Ill., passed away unexpectedly Friday, January 5, 2024, in his home on the farm. He was born on July 29, 1982, in Sycamore, Illinois, to James and Rebecca Montgomery. On August 31, 2013, he met Amanda Ball in New Glarus, Wis. They were married one year later, on August 31, 2014, in Sandwich, Ill.
Phil graduated from Kirkland Hiawatha High School in 2000 where he was an active member of the FFA. He was awarded the Kirkland Lions Club Jack Vowels Memorial Scholarship to Kishwaukee College where he graduated with an Associate’s Degree in CNC and Tool and Die along with many other manufacturing and agricultural certificates.
Phil was a life-long farmer and has worked on his grandparents, parents, and his farm his entire life. His work history includes Shapemaster, Kasper Ag Solutions, and Country Financial Crop Claims. AM and PM Hemp Farm started growing in 2020 and expanded with AM and PM Hemp-a-licious Goods in 2021. Even after starting his own businesses, he continued farming at Boehne Farms applying custom hog manure because he loved driving tractor.
Phil enjoyed pursuing educational leadership opportunities. In 2010 he graduated from Illinois Farm Bureau’s ALOT (Ag Leaders of Tomorrow) and in 2013 he graduated from Prairie Farmers CMF (Cultivating Master Farmers). He was accepted into the Illinois Agriculture Leadership Program where he enjoyed traveling throughout the state of Illinois, Washington D.C., and on an international trip to Nairobi, Kenya and Tel Aviv, Israel. He caught one of the last flights home before the world shut down due to COVID and graduated in 2020.
Phil has a long history of serving in his community. He was a part of the DeKalb Corn and Soybean Growers since 2007. His most recent achievement was developing “Ag Street” at DeKalb County Corn Fest. He was on the DeKalb County Farm Bureau Board since 2004 with Vice President being the highest position he served. Locally, he was involved with the Franklin Township Park Board, Kirkland Hiawatha Education Foundation, and Kirkland Hiawatha FFA Alumni.
“We Serve” was the motto Lion Phil took very seriously to raise money for the world’s largest service organization with the Kirkland Lions Club. He served as President in 2015 when the Fairdale Tornado took place where he then became Vice President of the DeKalb County Long Term Recovery Cooperation helping residents rebuild their homes after their town was destroyed. For his involvement, Lion Phil received the highest honor from the Lions Club International Foundation receiving the Melvin Jones Fellow Award in December 2015. Lion Phil ensured there were plenty of fireworks to be displayed at the Kirkland Lions Club 4th of July Annual Celebration in recent years. At the festival he always prioritized organizing local bands in the entertainment tent but also invited Rodney Adkins, Joe Diffie, Lainey Wilson, American Blonde, Wayland, and Hinder.
Phil was lucky to find his passion in life - hemp farming. AM and PM Hemp Farm started growing hemp in 2020. The 5-year plan quickly became a 6-month plan after establishing the CBD product line. Their first market was the DeKalb Farmers Market in 2021. Since then, Amanda and Phil have been to over 300 venues and 15 states. Their biggest personal accomplishments were being at the National Farm Machinery Show, first hemp growers at the 70th Farm Progress Show, and being published in the largest Brazilian newspaper.
Phil believed in cooperation over competition in the ever-changing hemp industry. He was a founding member of Accanability and a sponsor of the Illinois Hemp Growers Association which works to improve cannabis legislation and education. Phil loved every business partnership he formed - though too many to name.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a lasting tribute to the deceased, preserving their memory and legacy for future generations.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or crematorium may assist with writing the obituary or provide guidance on what information to include.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, city of residence, and information about their surviving family members. It may also include details about their occupation, hobbies, achievements, and any notable accomplishments.
