Veto P. Zavagli - November 17, 1925 - March 04, 2022

Departed: 03/04/2022 (Loves Park)
Obituary Preview: It is with extreme sadness that we announce the passing of Veto P. Zavagli, with his beloved wife, Violet, by his side as he went to be with the Lord on March 4, 2022 at the age of 96.  Veto was a bright spark in this world and will be deeply missed by many.
Veto was born to Beni and Anna Zavagli on November 17, 1925 in Rockford, IL.  He spent his childhood growing up in a quaint neighborhood on the southeast side of Rockford with his loving parents and his older brother, Joe.  Veto was very active as a young boy and he was no stranger to mischief.  Before graduating from Rockford East High School in 1946, Veto enlisted in the United States Navy during the height of World War II.  He proudly served his country as a Navy corpsman from 1944 to 1946.  Upon retiring from the Navy, Veto returned to Rockford where he met his wife, Violet, and they married on January 28, 1950 and together had three children, Tom, John and Jay.
Veto spent his 40-year career working as a production coordinator for Barber-Colman.  In his free time, Veto also enjoyed being active in his community and volunteering for various organizations.  He was an active member of the Model T Ford Club, the VFW, and served on the supervisory board at Rock Valley Credit Union for 52 years.  But most importantly, he was a devoted member of St. Bridget Catholic Church for 62 years.
Veto was a passionate man, spending his life enjoying the simple pleasures of life.  Among his many passions, Veto loved to cook, building and collecting classic diecast cars and traveling around the country.  Veto was an avid collector, and according to his wife, Vi, he kept anything and everything which drove her mad at times.  Veto thoroughly enjoyed being in the kitchen with his beloved wife creating his famous Swedish Mickey pancakes, homemade pasta, chocolate logs and puff balls for his family.  And you could almost bet money, he never passed up a trip to the casino where he enjoyed playing slots alongside his wife.  But among his greatest joys and accomplishments, was his family.  Veto was happiest when spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Veto had an infectious zest for life, making sure to enjoy every living moment.  He never knew a stranger and would always make you feel welcome with his big hello.  He would do anything for a laugh and always enjoyed a good joke.  Anyone that truly knew him knew he had such a big, giving heart.
We lost a special one with Veto.  He saw the magic in all things.  His warm demeanor and his infectious smile will be greatly missed.  He loved deeply and fiercely and we take comfort in knowing that Veto is finally home and reunited with his late son, Jay P. Zavagli.  What a glorious day it was for him and Jay.
We know Heaven is a great place because they now have you.
Veto is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Violet Zavagli; two children, Tom and John Zavagli; four grandchildren, Megan Caveny, Amber Rodas, Heather Morse and Josh Zavagli; nine great-grandchildren, Ellie and Maizy Caveny, Jacob and Ashley Turner, Anthony and Alejandro Rodas, Jaden, Amaiyla, and Jeremiah Zavagli; and one great-great-grandson, Azariah.
Veto is preceded in death by his son, Jay P. Zavagli; mother, Anna Zavagli; father, Beni Zavagli; brother, Joe Zavagli.
No services are planned at this time.

Gerald Wayne LaFayette - July 18, 1940 - July 07, 2021

Departed: 07/07/2021 (Loves Park)
Obituary Preview: On July 7, 2021, Rockford lost one of its beloved native sons, Gerald (Jerry) Wayne LaFayette, to natural causes.
Born to Gunhild Elvira Schelin and Lincoln Grant LaFayette on July 18,1940 at Rockford Memorial Hospital, he spent his entire life and livelihood here. Jerry is survived by his two sisters: Marcia (John) Carmichael of Erie, CO, and Cynthia (Dennis) Laumer of San Antonio, TX, and predeceased by his best friend and brother, Larry (Barbara) LaFayette of Rockford. Jerry was blessed with 3 children: Amy (Tom) MacAdam of Colorado Springs, CO, Garett (Amber) LaFayette of Cottage Grove, WI, and Adriana (Mike) Plocinski of Batavia, IL, and their mother, Barbara (Denis) Anderson of Loves Park. His ten grandchildren who kept him on his toes are Quinn MacAdam of  Pensacola, FL; Jake (Megan) MacAdam of Wheaton, IL; Charlie, Marina, and Elena MacAdam of Colorado Springs; Adele and Aurelie LaFayette of Cottage Grove and Tyler, Lucas, and Colton Plocinski of Batavia. His first great-grandchild is due early August.
Jerry was a lifelong fixture in Rockford. Son of a rough-and-tumble Iowa farm boy and a beautiful Swedish city girl, his early years were spent running the neighborhood on Rockton Avenue and later, Quincy Street where he worked a paper route. He was a graduate of West High School, Southern Illinois University, and John Marshall Law School in Chicago. Before he began his 50 yearlong practice of law, he was found working side-by-side with his father washing the windows and mopping the floors of downtown Rockford businesses. Although it was his joy to help Rockford’s residents with their legal needs, it was those days that he spoke most frequently and fondly of – learning the grit, the work ethic, and the common sense that that work taught him. Directly after graduating law school, Jerry served both as a Winnebago County Public Defender and later, an Assistant State’s Attorney for a few years before going into private practice with various firms before forming Victor & LaFayette, and finally The Law Offices of Gerald LaFayette. In work and life, Jerry was known for his fairness, kindness, generosity and always “looking out for the little guy".
Never losing sight of his agrarian roots, Jerry always had a hand in the dirt, planting anything that offered a chance of growing as well as hunting and fishing. Anyone who knew him, knew that Jerry loved cars and races, collecting a few here and there, including his beloved Shelbys. In his later years, Jerry became an avid reader, loving a good history book on any topic and thoroughly enjoyed his morning coffee groups discussing said texts. Like his dear parents, Jerry had the “gift of gab” and could talk to any person from any walk of life for hours and was sure to treat them to one of his fantastical stories. His ultimate pride and joy was his family, whom he gifted many memorable summers together - boating and fishing and all the campfire things - at his cabin, Fernwood II, on Lake Chicaugon, Michigan. There, he helped forge a kind of creature that came to be known as “Lake Rats” (aka his children), who learned to embrace the great outdoors in a deeper, more appreciative way.
Jerry loved attending his grandchildren’s endless number of sports games, as well as recitals, Grandparents Day school events, and family get-togethers. He only cheated at cards a little. His nephews, Lincoln (Wendy) LaFayette and Jamie (Dawn) LaFayette; and niece, Holly (Jim) Fiorini, and all their dear children were a special blessing to him with their lively company and devoted, selfless, care they gave him right up to his final days.
We welcome you to join us as we celebrate the inimitable life of our Gerald Wayne LaFayette at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 16, 2021 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 200 N. 1st St., Rockford, IL 61107. A private burial service will follow. “As long as we remember a person, they are not really gone. Their thoughts, their feelings and their memories become a part of us.” S. Cronin
