Harry Solakian - April 07, 1938 - May 15, 2024

Departed: 05/15/2024 (Racine)
Obituary Preview: Harry Solakian, April 7, 1938 - May 15, 2024.
Harry Solakian was welcomed into the Kingdom of Heaven at the age of 86, on May 15, 2024, after a struggle with heart failure.  He passed away peacefully with his four children by his side.
Harry was born in Racine, Wisconsin to parents Sarkis and Florence “Filore” Solakian on April 7, 1938.  With the arrival of his younger brother, George, Harry had a wonderful childhood with a loving family.  Harry attended Garfield Grade School, Washington Junior High School and Horlick High School.  He served in the National Guard and got his bachelor’s degree in history and education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and master’s degree in history from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Harry started off his working career as a teacher at Starbuck Junior High School and then Washington Park High School, but he spent the majority of his teaching years as a Case High School history teacher.  In 1976 Harry changed careers and went into the transportation industry as a sales executive, and it was in this industry that Harry retired at the age of 62.
In 1963 Harry married Gladys Decker Solakian and together they raised four children in Racine.  In 1986 Harry and Gladys divorced, but they remained dear friends and spent holidays and many family dinners together with their children.
Harry’s great joy in life was his four children and he was delighted with the addition of his beloved daughter-in-law, Stacey, son-in-law, David, and granddaughter, Eleanor.  Harry aways said he was “the richest man in town” because of his family and up until his last week, still enjoyed his weekly Sunday dinners with them.
Harry was an amazing home chef, providing his family wonderful meals all the way into his last year, and he was so proud to see that his son, John, had surpassed him in his culinary skills.  Harry also enjoyed sharing his hunting and fishing knowledge with his sons, Sam and Joe, laying the ground work for their lifelong passion.  Together they enjoyed many outdoor adventures.  Harry was always a dapper dresser in his conservative but fashionable style and enjoyed going on shopping excursions with his daughter, eating out at restaurants with her and going to the beach and on vacations with her.
Harry was a remarkable man.  It was because of his strong sense of duty, the sacrifices he made and the deep love for his family that he achieved what he did and was able to give his family a wonderful life.  He truly lived for his family.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents Sarkis and Filore Solakian, his brother George Solakian, and his ex-wife and dear friend Gladys Solakian. Harry is survived in life by his sons Sarkis “Sam” (Stacey) Solakian, John (David) Solakian and Joseph Solakian, his daughter Catherine Solakian and his granddaughter Eleanor Solakian.
The family would like to thank the amazing staff at Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center, ICU unit for their kind and comforting care, and the wonderful staff at Clement Manor Nursing Home in Greenfield, Wisconsin for their attentive and loving care.  The family further thanks Father Avedis Kalayjian and Father Yeprem Kelegian of St. Mesrob Armenian Church for their visits and spiritual guidance and support.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 22, 2024 at St. Mesrob Armenian Church, 4605 Erie Street, Racine, Wisconsin with visitation from 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM, service from 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM, and burial to follow at Graceland Cemetery in Racine, Wisconsin.  Any donations should be made to St. Mesrob Church or Clement Manor Nursing Home.

Joyce Arden Rightler - July 12, 1943 - May 04, 2024

Departed: 05/04/2024 (Racine)
Obituary Preview: Joyce Arden Rightler (Nee: Kirchoff), 80, of Racine, Wisconsin passed away peacefully in the early hours of May 4, 2024.
Joyce was born on Monday July 12, 1943 to Percy and Bertha Kirchoff at St. Mary’s Hospital in Racine, Wisconsin.  Joyce was the eldest of 5 siblings, she enjoyed being the eldest especially helping oversee her siblings. She grew up in the Crestwood neighborhood of Racine and she loved visiting her grandparent’s farm growing up. She went to Horlick High School in Racine.
Joyce worked in many different jobs, but they were all based on her giving, helping and nurturing spirit.  She worked as a waitress in many different restaurants along with Racine Country Club. She owned and ran Wigs By Joyce for many years and was well known for her hair (wig) dressing skills.  She always enjoyed seeing the joy on the ladies faces after they got their wigs, especially helping women who lost their hair fighting cancer. She even made sure that those ladies got wigs even if they couldn’t afford it. Those who knew Joyce, knew that was exactly her heart. One of her favorite jobs was working as the household coordinator for Dr. Elisabeth Allen Steffen of Racine.  She took care of Dr. Steffen’s household activities and helped Dr. Steffen in many other ways. Not only did she work for Dr. Steffen but this flourished into a great friendship that Joyce spoke about with love and admiration for many years.  She had the opportunity to be in the first Phlebotomy class at St. Mary’s Medical Center, earning her Phlebotomy diploma and National Certification.  She then went on to work for many years as a phlebotomist at St. Mary’s and genuinely loved helping people to get better.  Joyce had also had the opportunity to work as manager for the thrift store for Lutheran High, she took immense pride in running that store successfully knowing that helped many students with their Christian based education.  She parlayed that experience to become a Manager for the Family Dollar Stores in Racine.
It wouldn’t take exceptionally long after meeting Joyce to see that her Faith in Jesus along with her love for her family were her everything.  She would volunteer at the Love and Charity mission to help reach people when they most needed the help and to have the opportunity to demonstrate the love of God to others.  Her children and later grandchildren were her entire world.  Joyce loved being a mother and would often say that was what she always wanted to be, and she absolutely adored being a grandmother.  She would always speak of her grandchildren as being one of the greatest blessings to her.
Joyce was the matriarch of this family and a true gem; she will always be known for her loving kindness along with her willingness to help others and her family.  She was always the first to lend a hand; or as most of her friends know, she would rummage through her incredibly organized basement to find whatever someone needed.
Joyce is survived by her children Jeffrey Jones of North Little Rock, Arkansas, Jennifer (Jesse) Cernicka of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin and Sheri (Hal) Coffen of Saukville Wisconsin; her grandchildren Jordan, Jasmine and Jared Cernicka, Addyson Jones and Katherine (Mike) Martinovich; her sister Janet Greco and brother Larry Kirchoff.
Joyce was preceded in death by her husband Larry Rightler, her parents Percy and Bertha Kirchoff, her sisters Judith Wieland and Jacqueline Hansen and Sue Ellen Kirchoff.  They are waiting at the Door to Heaven to welcome her with love, hugs, laughing and of course dancing.
Funeral services for Joyce will be held on Monday, May 13, 2024 at 6:00 p.m. at Purath-Strand Funeral Home. A visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.

Sean P Devlin - August 30, 1935 - April 17, 2024

Departed: 04/17/2024 (Racine)
Obituary Preview: Sean Patrick Devlin, a longtime Racine journalist and Opinion Page editor, passed away on April 17, 2024.  He was born in South Chicago on August 30, 1935 to Robert Devlin and Margaret (Beech) Devlin.  He moved to South St. Paul, MN at the age of seven and graduated from South St. Paul High School.
He attended the University of Minnesota and served in the US Army Artillery Corp.  After his Army tour he returned to the University of Minnesota Journalism School.
His first writing job was with the Beloit Daily News in 1964, followed by a brief stint at the Kankakee (IL) Daily News.  He came to Racine in 1966 to be a general assignment reporter and worked his way through several beats mainly covering government for almost 20 years before finally taking the reins of the Opinion Page for the last 12 years of his journalism career, retiring in 1997.  For 32 years he endeared himself to readers of The Racine Journal Times. “Mostly,” Sean said, “I was treated gently in my career as editorial writer.”
He met Sandra Welch (Devlin) in 1967.  Three years later they were married.
Sean said her “patience and love managed to keep us together for 54 years of marriage”.
His wordsmithing work was only a means of financing what he calls the “real stuff in life” – canoeing, camping, cross-country skiing, woodworking and travel.
Together he and Sandy shared that joy, traveling far and wide over the years.  Both were licensed pilots and flew two light planes, a 1946 Taylorcraft and a 1947 Stinson a few years later.  They would fly to distant airports and camp.
Their infectious love for travel and the outdoors drew a “coterie” – as Sean put it - of like-minded friends, journalism co-workers and relatives to what soon became twice-a-year summer and fall campouts at Potawatomi State Park in Door County and Nelson Dewey State Park near Cassville.
Nowhere was Sean more at home than around the campfire, spinning tales and sharing his reasoned opinions on the events of the times, often punctuating or puncturing his reasoning at the very end with, “But on the other hand….”.  That was usually followed by his short bark of laughter as he enjoyed the confusion he had created.
Good times, indeed.
Together Sean and Sandy traveled the world, Europe being their favorite – “everything below Denmark and west of the Czech Republic”, as Sean put it.
After traveling to Alaska on a cruise and Hawaii on a stop-over on the way to Australia, he started thinking about the states they had stayed overnight in on their other travels.  That became their Bucket List for the next few years.  As of last year they had completed it, having stayed overnight in all 50 states.
Survivors include his wife, Sandy; his brother Tim Devlin (Joyce); his brother-in-law Robert Byers; nieces Lori Evans and Cathy (Jay) Kreamer; nephew Robert Byers, Jr.; his German family, Meike and Andreas Schwarze and their children, Louisa and Jacob. They also include dogs.  “In this family, the dogs count,” Sean said.  “I fondly remember all the other dogs – 10 of them – and two still living.” He would add to that survivor’s list “a large coterie of people I consider friends.”
Sean said there will be no ceremonies or funeral service.  There will be a yard party at some date in summer where all those friends can gather again, just as they have for years.

John Edward Price - July 06, 1961 - March 08, 2024

Departed: 03/08/2024 (Racine)
Obituary Preview: After a long three-and-a-half-year battle with pancreatic cancer, John Edward Price, 62, passed peacefully into spirit, with his wife Nancy by his side, on the morning of March 8, 2024, at Zilber Family Hospice in Wauwatosa, WI.
John was born in Chicago, IL on July 6, 1961, to Ollie Price (Pierson) and Theodore Price, the youngest of 6 children. He developed an interest in music – his lifelong passion – from a young age, and enjoyed spending summers with his aunt, Adeline Washington (Price), and family in Decatur, MI, where he played baseball and daydreamed about monsters and the supernatural. John attended John T. Pirie Elementary School, St. Edmund School, and Mendel Catholic High School in Chicago.
Despite the offer of an engineering scholarship to Purdue University, John chose to follow his creative dreams, studying music at Berklee College of Music in Boston, and film at Columbia College in Chicago. He completed a BA in Creative Pedagogical Studies at the University of Massachusetts—Amherst.
John was a Waldorf teacher for 21 years. Most of that time was spent as a class teacher and later, teaching high school calculus at Tamarack Waldorf School. He was the first Waldorf teacher in the city of Milwaukee to graduate an 8th grade class. He also taught Science and Math to teachers in the Great Lakes Waldorf Teacher Training. John made a huge impact on the lives of all his students and had a knack for helping them to feel seen. In 2019, he accepted the role of Director of Programing of St. Kate—The Arts Hotel, a job he enjoyed immensely.
A film connoisseur, actor, teacher, director, author, and songwriter, John was, above all, a superb professional jazz bassist who fervently spread the gospel of music, tirelessly dedicated to keeping the cultural scene of Milwaukee and Southeastern Wisconsin vibrant and alive. He had a wicked sense of humor and could light up a room with his smile. He will be greatly missed by the many people whose lives he touched.
While in his professional life John was an accomplished renaissance man, his greatest accomplishment was creating an incredible family with his wife of 35 years, Nancy. Married in 1989, the couple raised John’s two children from a previous marriage and together had 3 more. All the children were adored by their parents. The family loved to travel, spent time most summers in Door County, WI and enjoyed occasional trips to the mountains of Estes Park, CO. John shared his love of countless kinds of music with his family and introduced them to all the Jazz greats as well as to artists such as Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan, Earth, Wind and Fire, and Pat Metheny—and so many more. He loved to support his children as they excelled in sports, music, and the arts. His children were his greatest joy.
John is survived by his wife, Nancy Kresin-Price; his five children, Carmen Price (Johan Holmquist), Gregory Price, Timothy Price (Kaitlin), Selena Price (Nathanial Jackson), and Sophia Price; his three grandchildren: Theodore Holmquist, Olive Jackson, and Willow Price; his sisters Dianne Brownlee (Willard decd), Helen Ross (Adrian), and Denise Bell (William), sister-in-law Ruth Price, and many nieces, nephews, and countless friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Theodore & Ollie Price, his brother Theodore Price Jr., sister, Judith Lawson (Dennis), and niece Stephanie Renee Bell.
John’s Funeral service will be held on Monday, March 11th at 1:00 pm at the Wilson Theater in Vogel Hall at The Marcus Performing Arts Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Refreshments will immediately follow in The Rouge Ballroom at the Pfister Hotel. Vogel Hall Address 121 E. State St. Milwaukee, WI 53202 Entrance on the Milwaukee Riverwalk Pfister Hotel Address
