We are sad to announce the passing of Jitendra (Jitu) P. Shah. Jitu enjoyed a wonderful 78+ years of life and was blessed with a large and loving following of family and friends who will miss him tremendously.

Jitu was born in Ahmedabad in 1945 and moved to Germany in 1968 for work before finally settling in the US in 1969. He married Shreedevi Shah in 1972, and together they raised two sons. He followed in his father’s footsteps and entered the ship cargo brokering business in which he enjoyed a successful career for nearly 40 years before retiring in 2008.

Jitu leaves behind a wife of nearly 52 years: Shreedevi Shah. Two sons (and their wives): Niraj (married to Mona) and Mihir (married to Pragati). He also has three teenage grandchildren: Jayan, Sahil and Avani. Obituary Preview: Jitesh Kumar, aged 68, passed away surrounded by the love of his family on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, at Overlook Hospital in Summit. Born in Maputo, Mozambique, Jitesh's early years saw him relocate to Portugal at 21, and at 24, where he met the enduring love of his life, Asamita. Together, they bravely embarked on a journey to America, seeking the promise of a brighter future. Initially settling in Union City, they later found a home in the vibrant Iron Bound Section of Newark. In 2006, they moved to Green Brook, NJ, where they continued to build their life together.

Arriving in America with a modest $1000 and a wealth of determination, Jitesh embarked on a career driving for Teixeira’s Bakery. By 1991, a golden opportunity presented itself, allowing Jitesh and two partners to invest in their own bakery. Undaunted by the risks, Jitesh's sacrifices and relentless work ethic saw the enterprise flourish. Within a decade, the budding business outgrew its premises, relocating to a larger facility in North Bergen, and eventually, in 2007, to its prominent location in Irvington. Americas Bakery, under Jitesh's steadfast leadership, rose to prominence in the tri-state area, gracing numerous restaurants, pizzerias, and supermarkets with its exquisite bread.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Jitesh was a beacon of compassion and generosity. Remembering his roots, he was passionate about aiding those in need, frequently donating both food and financial aid to charities and individuals alike. His magnanimity extended to helping family and friends even when it meant stretching his own limits.

In his personal moments, Jitesh was an ardent Sporting soccer fan, relishing their matches from the comfort of his sofa. He cherished beach trips and occasional visits to casinos. Yet, his crowning joy was ensuring a prosperous life for his family, notably showering his three daughters and wife with his unwavering love and affection.

He leaves behind an inspiring legacy and will be deeply missed by all.

Jitesh is survived by his devoted wife of 41 years, Asamita; beloved daughters Sweta Belo (Andre), Anisha Lebre (Dave), and Pinky; cherished grandchildren Norah and Liam Belo, and Nala, Luka, and Baby Lebre; as well as his brother Paresh and sisters Hansa and Kumud.

A public viewing is scheduled for Sunday, October 29th, from 2 to 6 p.m., at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung, NJ 07069. Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 30th at 10 a.m., with cremation to follow at Somerset Hills Memorial Park, Basking Ridge.

Sunday, October 29th - Please wear light pastel colors, preferably no black. Dinner to follow; Location TBD

Monday, October 30th - Please wear white.

Originating from the rich heritage of India, Gulshan alongside his adored wife, painted a vivid picture of love and commitment in Delhi, where they raised a family bathed in traditions and warmth.

Gulshan's academic journey led him to Chaudhary Charan Singh University in Meerut, formerly known as Meerut University, where he pursued and achieved a degree in mathematics. Following his academic path, he dedicated over four decades to the Ministry of Agriculture, serving with passion and commitment. In 2004, he chose to retire, placing his heart and soul into spending quality time with the family he treasured so deeply.

Apart from his professional accomplishments, Gulshan was a fervent sports enthusiast, always eager to cheer for his favorite cricket team. He cherished the simplicity and joy of evenings out, whether attending a heartwarming family dinner or immersing himself in the world of cinema. Yet, above all else, his unwavering dedication was to his family, the cornerstone of his life.

Leaving an indelible mark of love and affection, Gulshan is survived by his four doting children: Archana Jain (Arun), Deepa Batra (Sandeep), Sharmila Arora (Abhishek Jain), and Rohit Arora (Shelly Kalra). His spirit also blossoms through nine grandchildren: Carishma, Tanisha, Kartik, Arushi, Pranav, Shreyan, Tanshi, Rian, and Shania. Moreover, the joy of his life extended to a great-grandchild, Aliha. A native of Punjab, India, Urmil's journey led her to Delhi shortly after her graduation, a city where she spent the most of her vibrant life until relocating to New Providence last year, to be nearer to her son.

An accomplished scholar, Urmil held a bachelor's degree in Teaching and further honed her academic prowess by obtaining a master's degree in English. She wielded her knowledge and passion as a formidable tool in shaping young minds, dedicating several years of her life to teaching kids at a middle school in India before retiring.

Urmil found joy in the simple things - her four children meant everything to her. In her leisure hours, watching a heartwarming family television show from India, or the aromatic spices that filled her kitchen. Cooking and hosting loved ones were not just hobbies, but her way of nurturing relationships. Her culinary skills were admired by all, but more than that, she will be fondly remembered for her generous spirit and lifelong commitment to serving others.

Leaving behind a legacy of love are her devoted husband of 58 years, Gulshan Arora, and their four beloved children - Archna Jain and her husband Arun, Deepa Batra and her husband Sandeep, Sharmila Arora and her husband Abhishek Jain, and Rohit Arora and his wife Shelly Kalra. Urmil's life also bestowed joy upon nine grandchildren - Carishma, Tanisha, Kartik, Arushi, Pranav, Shreyan, Tanshi, Rian, and Shania, as well as one great-grandchild, Aliha. Her siblings Madan Mohan Sachdev, Inder Mohan Sachdev, and Kailash Arora also survive her, cherishing her memory.

A funeral service to honor Urmil's life will be held on Friday, July 28, 2023, at 10 am at Somerset Hills Memorial Park, 95 Mt. Airy Road, Basking Ridge, NJ 07920.

Obituary Preview: A remarkable human being with an incredible life journey, Dr. Bodh Narayan Das (Babuji) leaves behind his wife of 68+ years, Mrs. Usha Das, along with his 6 children, Abha, Bibha, Rekha, Akhil, Nikhil, and Pratish, their respective spouses, 12 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren. All that he accomplished in his life is a testament to his perseverance, intellect, and courage. He touched innumerable lives as he forged a path forward, always putting others first while maintaining his deeply-held beliefs.

He came from Belaur, a remote village in the state of Bihar, located in Northeastern India near the foothills of the Himalayas. Although he grew up in extreme poverty, Babuji overcame the economic challenges by earning the high grades needed to compete for admission to Darbhanga Medical College. While there, he received the distinction of being elected the Secretary of the student body’s Clinical Society. After completing his medical training, he chose to come to the United States in 1968 and was thrilled to have his wife and children join him in 1970.

He saved many lives as a cardiologist for over 50 years in the United States – both as a clinician and as an academician training physicians who went on to save even more lives. Within his South Asian community in New York and New Jersey, he was everyone's "2nd Doctor".

Babuji was a man of great self-discipline who always abided by a set of principles and led by example. He never drank alcohol, and he never smoked and truly lived with regard for others. His daily practice of Ahimsa extended to his being a strict vegetarian for the majority of his life.

Kindness and consideration were the hallmarks of his being. In his unfailing willingness to help families within the community, Babuji welcomed them into his home for as long as they needed when they first arrived in the United States. He was a loving husband, not only providing devoted companionship and perfectly-crafted cups of tea but also fulfilling his wife’s dream of visiting the Char Dham temples in India. Babuji’s love for his family showed up in countless ways as well, from providing opportunities for education, stability, and growth for his children, to delighting in every grandchild’s FaceTime call, performance, and academic achievement. Yet another testament to his humanity was his selfless decision to donate a kidney to his youngest son.

Babuji was a man his community admired and relied upon, and his family adored. His impeccable legacy lives on in the hearts and minds of all whose lives he touched.

He was also one of the founders of the Telugu School Society in Delhi to serve the Telugu community in Delhi. He continued to serve as an honorary treasurer for several decades.

He later immigrated to the United States in 2014 along with his wife, who passed away in 2020.

He is survived by his three sons: Sriprakash Nyshadham of Parsippany, NJ; Daksha Nyshadham of Brooklyn, NY; and Janakiram Nyshadham of Fremont, CA; and four grandchildren.

He was a devout son to his parents, a caring husband, dutiful father, revered by his extended family (in India and the USA), and was a well-respected person in the Telugu community in Delhi.

As per the family's wishes, all funeral services and cremation will be kept private for the family.

Her grace, loyalty, and warmth united a huge joint family through joy and hardship, and her memory will nurture that unity for decades to come. We remember her for her world famous Daal Bati and Sizzler, vivacious selfies, gentle-yet-firm mannerisms, infectious laughter, love for nature, passion for travel, spiritual wisdom, enthusiasm for life, and so much more. She lives on in the hearts of her daughters and their husbands, grandchildren, brother, sisters and brothers in law, nieces and nephews, and friends and neighbors.

Aruna was the youngest of four sisters and she has a younger brother. Aruna received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the Institute of Science, University of Bombay, India. It was at the Institute of Science where she first met Kishore Shah, with whom she was married on July 10, 1967. Six months later she came to Lowell, MA to join her husband who was a student at the time. They have two children-daughter Priti and son Vinay. Aruna was a great wife and a wonderful loving mother. She lived her whole life loving, caring, and supporting her family. She was very fond of her two grandsons. They were always in the center of her heart. She worked in banks at various times in her life. She retired from Affinity Federal Credit Union in 2009. Cooking and gardening were her favorite activities. When Vinay gifted her an iPad, she used it to the fullest exploring the internet for new ideas and solutions in cooking and gardening. She lived a very active lifestyle. She loved walking and hiking. Her life took a very sad turn in 2019 when she became sick with severe pneumonia. It left scarring in her lungs. Since that time initially, she recovered very considerably due to her tenacity and fighting spirit. However, over the last several months her condition started declining. But she was a fighter. She did not let her illness stop what she wanted to do. She wanted to live her life on her own terms and she did. Eventually, she succumbed to the illness and God took her away on June 1, 2022. We humbly pray for peace and sadgati for her soul.

He last worked at Merrill Lynch prior to retiring in 1997.Seetharamiah raised his family in Paramus, New Jersey before moving to Basking Ridge, New Jersey in 2000. He was an avid bridge player and loved vintage Hindi and Telugu songs and movies. Later in his life, he developed an enthusiasm for Carnatic music. He appreciated the simpler things in life, was extremely lighthearted, and often used his sense of humor to lift the spirts of all those that were fortunate to have known him.Seetharamiah is survived by his wife of almost 53 years of marriage, Simanthini Kauta, two sons (Satish and Anup), two granddaughters (Shaila and Leela), and two grandsons (Aadhi and Kalyan).Given the current situation surrounding the pandemic, the family will conduct a ceremony with limited guests. In leu of flowers, Seetharamiah would have wanted his friends and family to help those who are less fortunate. Please donate your time and money to homeless shelters in your local communities.

He also leaves behind his siblings Malu, Vasant, Pushpa, Vidya, and Neelu who he always kept in his thoughts and prayers.Also known as Madhu to his family and friends and Baba to his two grandchildren, he had a lifelong career of over 40 years in the airline industry working for Indian Airlines and US Airways until his retirement over 20 years ago. It was at that time he changed his career when he became a grandparent and loved every minute of baseball games, tae kwon do, soccer, football, lacrosse, and sports that his grandchildren took part in over those years. After all those years of dutiful service Madhu was able to travel around the world with his family and when asked to take a trip his answer would be “let me check my schedule, oh okay I’m free that week, let’s go!”We were fortunate to have him for guidance, support, wisdom, and love for the happiest part of his 81.989 years. He is already missed but his schedule is once again freed up to take that trip.

After graduating from medical school, he completed his residency in ophthalmology at the New York Ear and Eye Infirmary of Mount Sinai and completed his fellowship in vitreoretinal diseases and surgery at University of California, Irvine, School of Medicine. Neil returned to New York City and served as the president and founder of New York Ophthalmology.He was an avid reader, had a passion for surfing, and enjoyed tending to his rooftop garden in New York City. His greatest joy in life was spending time with his family and friends and caring for his patients.Neil is survived by his parents, Suresh and Aruna Patel; his sister Sima Suresh Pandey and her husband Ajitabh; his nephew, Ajay Keshav Pandey; and two nieces, Anjali Tulsi Pandey and Sejal Sia Pandey. Dr. Maghar Singh Manhas - August 17, 1922 - January 03, 2022

Obituary Preview: Professor Emeritus, Dr. Maghar Singh Manhas, who taught Organic Chemistry at Stevens Institute of Technology for 40 years, passed away peacefully on January 3rd, 2022 at the age of 99, surrounded by his family. He recently celebrated his 68th wedding anniversary and is survived by his wife, five children, eleven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Dr. Manhas was born on August 17th, 1922, in Sialkot, India to a well-respected army officer father and a housewife mother. He had two older sisters and was the only one in the family to receive formal education in those times. His father’s one wish was for him to be fully educated so that every future opportunity would be available to him. In turn, Dr. Manhas has ensured that his children and grandchildren have all been educated to at least the collegiate level. Dr. Manhas earned his undergraduate Science degree in 1943 from Punjab University, his Master’s in Chemistry in 1945, and his Ph.D. from Allahabad University in 1950. He never allowed his commitment to education to falter, despite his family being uprooted and his home being lost during the India-Pakistan Partition in 1947.In 1960, Dr. Manhas joined Stevens Institute of Technology as a Postdoctoral Research Associate and quickly rose through the ranks to become a Professor of Chemistry in 1970. He retired from Stevens in 1992, and was conferred the honor of Professor Emeritus. He continued to teach at Stevens into the late 1990s and served as an advisor into the early 2000s. Dr. Manhas received international recognition from the Ranbaxy Pharmaceutical Research Organization, was conferred an Honorary M. Eng. from Stevens in 1974, and was twice awarded the Jess H. Davis Memorial Award for Research Excellence.During his teaching tenure, he advised over a dozen doctoral students and published over two hundred research papers as well as several books of both scientific and spiritual background. His research was funded by the National Science Foundation, National Institute of Health, Stevens Institute of Technology, and multiple private industries. He was an international subject matter expert on beta-lactams and spoke regularly at several national and international conferences. He served as a visiting lecturer at universities in Japan and The People’s Republic of China as well as at the Indian Science Congress, the Indian Pharmaceutical Science Association, and the Indian Council of Chemists. In addition to his academic and scientific accomplishments, Dr. Manhas also heavily contributed to the Rajput Association of North America (RANA) for over thirty years. He was a proud Rajput who encouraged everyone to honor their heritage. Dr. Manhas himself focused his attention on the analysis of Hinduism through the eyes of a scientist. He spoke five languages (Punjabi, Hindi, Dogri, Urdu, and English) which enhanced his ability to connect with people of diverse backgrounds and create lasting international friendships. Despite his humble beginnings, Dr. Manhas succeeded in life through hard work, sacrifice, and selfless service to a countless number of people. He kept a positive and cheerful attitude and was a source of inspiration to all who crossed his path.After more than five decades of service to his family, friends, Stevens, and RANA, Dr. Manhas is remembered as a deeply determined educator who dedicated his lifelong journey to his family and to his students. He strove for his disciples to achieve their very best, Per Aspera Ad Astra.

Growing up in Chhatral, Gujarat, she was the ideal daughter and sister. As a child, she was her siblings’ secondary caregiver , much like a mini-me of her mother, Shanta. Although coming from a poor household, she and her family were fun and loving people; they wouldn't let their circumstances determine their happiness. As a wife and mother in Bardoli, she was devoted to care for her husband and sons. When J.C. was away teaching others, she would be instilling values in her sons at home to which they still carry till date. Ashaben stuck by her husband’s side till his last breath, and you could even call them soulmates. Being a mother, Utpal and Shehul were always her top priority; whether it be scolding them for dozing off instead of studying or nurturing them while they were sick.

Anju Chopra, 65, passed away on Wednesday, August 11th following a five-year-long battle with breast cancer. She was born in New Delhi to Shanti and Indra Chopra in 1956. She studied to become a doctor in India and, in 1983, she moved to the United States where she met her husband, Jagbir Beniwal. They married in 1990 and welcomed their one daughter, Pamela, in 2001.

She was a physician specializing in Internal Medicine and worked at Pfizer Inc. as a Medical Director since 2001. She was a dedicated employee who took every opportunity to work, even after being diagnosed with cancer. Until July 2021, she worked full-time. Anju had a deep love for Pfizer and was valued and beloved amongst her colleagues.

Anju was a kind, soft-spoken, and loving woman, a capable person who accomplished anything to which she put her mind. She cared deeply for her parents and made sure to visit them every single day after she had finished her work. She treasured her daughter Pam, her best friend, and her dear puppy, Eddie, and was a wonderful mother to them both.

Although reserved, Anju had many friends and was a cheerful person despite any hardships that came her way. She mustered great strength in the face of severe adversity and fought bravely until the end. She was a role model for many. Few people, if any, could say any harsh words about her. She was truly loved by all.

Anju was the type of person who would suffer so that others wouldn’t have to, and she never complained. Her positivity, dedication, and love will be dearly missed by all who knew her, and she will remain forever in our hearts.

Obituary Preview: Shaila Kallianpur (nee Indu Bagade) was born on November 23rd, 1938 in Kasargod, India to Shri. Bhavanishankar and Smt. Uma Bagade. She lost her parents and two brothers at the very young age of 5 and moved to Bombay to live with her uncle Shri. Kamalakar Bagade and family.

Shaila loved her family deeply, and is survived by her two daughters Arti & Akshata, her sons-in-law Rajesh & Yateen, her grandchildren Rhea, Atharva & Arohi, her favorite puppy Benji, and a loving extended family consisting of many cousins, nieces, nephews and their children.

Shaila completed her schooling at Balmohan Vidya Mandir in Bombay, and worked as a Montessori teacher for many years. In December 1961, she married Shantaram Kallianpur. The two welcomed their beautiful daughters and raised them in Bombay, Madras, and settled in Bangalore in 1978. They loved to travel and eventually moved to New Jersey, following their daughters.

Shaila made friends wherever she went and made sure to keep in touch with them over the years. Charitable work was very important to Shaila. She has helped many who were less fortunate than her, directly providing food, money and/or education to their children. She enjoyed cooking, tatting, and crafts. And most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren. Shaila was a doting grandmother and loved to be with and take care of her grandkids.

Shaila was always caring, kind and treated everyone like family. Her positive energy, tenacious spirit, and radiant smile will forever be remembered. Shaila Kallianpur will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

A pooja and memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 19th, 2021, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at the Main Chapel at Somerset Hills Memorial Park, 95 Mt Airy Rd in Basking Ridge, NJ.
