Robert C Hall - November 23, 1956 - April 26, 2024

Departed: 04/26/2024 (Wahoo)
Obituary Preview: Robert Charles Hall was born November 23, 1956, in Wahoo, NE to Robert J. Hall and Dona Lee Hall. Rob grew up on a farm north of Memphis, NE with his brothers and sister. He attended school in Mead until 1972 when he transferred to Wahoo High School from which Rob
would graduate in 1975. Rob and his wife Shelli were married in 1979. Rob spent time farming his homestead with his brother Mike in the early 1980’s before he and his family moved from the country to Wahoo
where they would raise their two children Robbie and Amanda. Rob began working with local 39 in Omaha in 1975 and later joined the apprenticeship and earned his mechanics card. He spent 10 years running work for large, industrial projects. He was later elected Local 39 Vice President and Organizer; and from 1996 until 2007 he served as Business Manager for the local. Beyond leading Local 39, Rob served as Trustee for the Omaha and Southwest Iowa Building and Construction Trades Council and as the Chairman of the Industrial Committee. In addition, Rob served on numerous labor-focused committees and boards. In 2008, Rob was appointed as an International Representative serving the Insulators
Union in many capacities throughout the United States and Canada until his retirement in 2020. Rob traveled all over throughout his career and after retirement, and was blessed to share many of his journeys with Shelli. He loved a good meal, a good view, and good company. He would argue he had the very best company in his wife Shelli. Rob shared a mutual love of history with Shelli, which is reflected in their beautiful home and pristine restoration of their historic General
Store in Weston, NE. Rob had an inherent passion for classic cars and hot rods. Rob’s fervor translated into beautiful automotive restorations. This is just one example of his talents, as it seems there was nothing he couldn't fix, and no question he couldn’t answer. He was always helping others, whether he
was offering advice, doing a favor, or simply making people laugh.
Grandpa Rob found immense joy in spending time with his two grandchildren, Baxter and Pippa. He was always their biggest fan at basketball and volleyball games. Rob took his grandchildren on several trips, but with Rob they truly were adventures. His thoughtful nature, and wonderful
sense of humor made every minute with him fun, special, and unforgettable. Rob passed away at his home, surrounded by his loving family, on April 26. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Rachelle Hall, his son Robert B. Hall, and his daughter and son-in-law
Amanda and Eric Scherer. He is preceded in death by his parents. Friends and family are invited for a remembrance gathering to be held on Wednesday, May 8,
from 6:00-8:00 pm at the education building on the east side of Lake Wanahoo.

Loretta was born in Lexington, NE on March 8, 1929 to Mose Kenneth Yanney and Wadia Nemer Yanney. She was the third of seven children. Her family owned a cafe in Lexington, but because of the Great Depression, they had to relocate and finally ended up in Lincoln, NE. They bought the Cottage Cafe near Nebraska Wesleyan University. The business was a family affair in which they all worked and enjoyed their customers.
Loretta graduated from Northeast High School in Lincoln in 1947. She enrolled at Nebraska Wesleyan and was elected president of her sorority. Because of their parents’ death, the family moved to Sioux City, Iowa. There, she enrolled in Morningside College and graduated with a BA in education.
Loretta met the man of her dreams, Mike Kacere, Sr., in January 1954. After a brief courtship, they were married on June 27th, 1954. They lived in Rushville, NE and Loretta taught kindergarten for the first semester as their first child was due in April. They then moved to Gordon, NE where they resided for the next 60 years, becoming prominent pillars of the community. Together, Mike and Loretta raised four children. Once the children were in school, Loretta went back to teaching in the Gordon Public School System where she taught for 23 years, retiring in May of 1994. She was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal church in Gordon where she served on the altar guild.
Mike and Loretta enjoyed traveling, visiting friends and family throughout the country. They traveled to Cedar Rapids every Easter. Once their children were grown and moved away from Gordon, they made it a point to travel to as many family events as possible. They took a fall trip many years in a row traveling to each of their children’s homes and visiting other relatives along the way. In 2015, Mike and Loretta moved to Wahoo, Nebraska to be closer to their children’s families. Steven Ray Berggren - March 02, 1951 - December 27, 2023

Departed: 12/27/2023 (Wahoo)
Obituary Preview: Steven Ray Berggren passed away on December 27, 2023 at the age of 72. He was born on March 2, 1951 to parents Clarence and Frances (Bergman) Berggren who instilled in him a love for family.
Steve and Joan were married for 45 years and raised three daughters on the farm where Steve grew up, just outside of Wahoo, NE. He is survived by his wife, Joan Berggren, his daughters and sons-in-law Erin and Mike Simons, Emily and Brandon Bliven, and Molly and Kyle Morgan, and his sister Barb Semrad. Steve also took great joy in being a grandfather to six grandchildren, Dylan and Maisy Simons, Ophelia and Oliver Bliven, and Bex and Nolan Morgan who brought immeasurable happiness to his life. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother John Berggren.
Steve worked on the farm throughout most of his life and was later employed by the Saunders County Highway Department. He had a warm personality and a nickname for pretty much everyone he met. He was always there to greet you with a smile and four-and-a-half fingered handshake.
Steve graduated from Weston High School in 1969 and had an endless supply of stories that seemed too unbelievable to be true. Luckily, he also had a core group of fellow Bobcats to back him up and confirm each and every one of them. Though he attended Weston High, he grew to love the Wahoo Warrior athletic program, and rarely missed a basketball or volleyball game. Over the past 40 years, players would come to know that jovial smile and one-of-a-kind handshake, well.
His grandchildren knew him as Papa Steve, but also as the one person in the world that could never quite tell them no. Rain, shine or snow he would take them to the barn to see cats and shoot hoops, fire up his old Ford tractor for a ride, or go throw rocks off the bridge. He lived for attending their events and playing anything and everything they ever asked.
Steve loved Blues and 70s Rock music and attended several concerts with friends through the years.
An open house reception to honor Steve will be held on Thursday, January 4, 2024 at the Wahoo State Bank Shed beginning at 6:30 pm. Friends and family are invited to gather and remember Steve.

Nancy E. Porter - April 07, 1930 - December 23, 2023

Departed: 12/23/2023 (Wahoo)
Obituary Preview: Nancy Edith Porter, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and cherished member of our community, peacefully passed away on December 23, 2023, at the age of 93.
Born on April 7, 1930, in Buffalo, WY, Nancy was the daughter of the late Vere and Ada (Sams) Duncan. She grew up on the family ranch and developed a deep appreciation for the beauty of nature that would remain with her throughout her life. Nancy embraced the values of hard work, kindness, and compassion, traits that would shape her character and impact those fortunate enough to know her. She came to Wahoo in 1945 to attend Luther Academy with her sisters.
When her youngest son reached fifth grade, Nancy pursued a career as the librarian at North Ward Middle School where she was also involved with other duties such as helping to serve lunch. She found fulfillment and purpose in her work. Later, she worked at the courthouse as the Office Manager at the Saunders County School Office. She then served diligently as Office Manager at the Saunders County Highway Department where she served for more than twenty years. Her commitment to her roles at Saunders County was unwavering, and her co-workers held her in high regard for her professionalism and warm demeanor.
Nancy's true devotion, however, lied in her role as a wife, mother, and grandmother. She married William Porter June 26, 1948 in Buffalo, Wyoming, and their union was blessed with love and companionship. Together, they embarked on a remarkable journey, supporting one another through life's joys and challenges. Nancy's love for her family knew no bounds, and her children Grant, Bruce, Randall, and Patrick were the center of her universe. She took great pride in their accomplishments and found immense joy in being a grandmother to her grandchildren Carrie, Bryan, Andrew, Derek, and Corey and her 7 great-grandchildren. Nancy prepared lavish meals for her family at every holiday and throughout the year. There was always a great variety of dishes and none of the grandchildren ever left hungry. Nancy's legacy of warmth, wisdom, and unconditional love will forever shape the lives of those she leaves behind.
In her free time, Nancy enjoyed tending to her garden where she grew a variety of beautiful plants and flowers. She was a member of two extension clubs and the Mothers Club. She enjoyed coffee gatherings with her friends, and helped raise funds for various community activities. Nancy was active in Wahoo First United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School, was in the Evening Esthers and the United Methodist Women, and served on many church committees through the years. She helped with funeral lunches, wedding receptions, and other church dinners. She volunteered at the Saunders County Historical Society and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Pythian Society. Before college football games were televised, Nancy spent Saturday afternoons listening to her beloved Nebraska Cornhuskers play and took detailed notes about each play of the game so she could remember them later.
Nancy was a remarkable lady whose personality blended elegance with folksiness, especially in her writing. Her genuine kindness and compassionate nature drew others to her, and her presence filled any room with warmth and love. As we mourn the loss of Nancy Edith Porter, we find solace in the memories we shared, the laughter we enjoyed, and the love she bestowed upon us. Her legacy will endure, inspiring us to be kinder, to value family, and to appreciate the simplicity and beauty of everyday moments.
Nancy is predeceased by her husband William Porter; son Grant Porter; sisters Bettye Dennison, Marianna Rockhold, Jennie “Jane” Imeson, and Veda Decolon. She is survived by her sons Bruce (Laurie) Porter of Scottsdale, AZ, Randall (Beth) Porter of Olancha, CA, Patrick (Connie) Porter of Omaha; grandchildren Carrie (Pat) Klaurens, Bryan (Lesley) Porter, Andrew Evans, Derek (Samantha) Porter, and Corey Porter. She will also be dearly missed by her extended family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
Funeral services honoring Nancy's life will be held on Saturday, December 30 at 10:30 am at the First United Methodist Church, followed by a burial service at Sunrise Cemetery. The family kindly requests that any donations in Nancy's memory be made to First United Methodist Church or Saunders County Historical Society.
In memory of Nancy, let us take a moment to cherish the time we had with her and to remember the importance of love, kindness, and family in our own lives. May she find eternal peace and her memory be a blessing to us all.

Kenton Lee Points - June 28, 1944 - October 29, 2023

Departed: 10/29/2023 (Wahoo)
Obituary Preview: Kenton Lee Points was born on June 28, 1944, to Phillip & Peggy (Meek) Points in Honey Creek, Iowa, and went to rest in the arms of his loving Savior Jesus Christ on October 29, 2023. In February, 1980 – after a very brief courtship – he married the love of his life, Cheryl Peavy, bringing with him to the marriage the blessing of a son, Phillip. During their 43+ years of marriage, they were further blessed with daughters Kendra, Anabel and Amanda, and son Kenton. He was very proud of all of his children, and eagerly watched as they conquered new challenges and milestones, celebrating with them along the way. The Bible says, “Children are a gift from God; they are his reward,” and Kent believed he was richly rewarded.
Those who were blessed to know Kent were usually the recipient of a firm handshake, a great story, and a delicious meal. He cherished his family, loved all children, feeding people wonderful meals he concocted, and “the art of the deal.” His bargaining skills and ingenuity were unparalled, and his chili legendary. Above all, he was that rare man of noble character. During his lifetime, he was a jack-of-all-trades and master of many. At the age of 18, he disassembled a roller coaster by hand, hanging from his knees upside down. He owned and operated numerous businesses – including motels, a salvage yard, a boarding house, TV and auto body shops and an antique store. But most importantly, he had a deep love for Jesus. At an early age he was drawn to seek God, though that journey was not always easy. In the end, he remained faithful, and we can hear God say to him: “Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful and trustworthy over a little, I will put you in charge of many things; share in the joy of your master.”
Survivors include his wife, Cheryl; children Phillip (Sharon) Points, II, of Colorado; Kendra (Matt) Nielsen of Nebraska; Anabel (Josh) Johnson of Tennessee; Amanda (Mike) Arndt of Nebraska; and Kenton (Jordyn) Points, of Nebraska; sisters Diana Sherman, Iowa, and Kathy (James) Ringler, Colorado; and brother Mike (Edie) Points, New Mexico; grandchildren Abby and Lance Schuhrke, Colorado; Matthew Nielsen, Nebraska; Souriya, Lance, Luke, Alyse and Ivy Johnson, Tennessee and Colorado; Noah and Colby Arndt, Nebraska; and Raina and Nova Points, Nebraska; several great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews; and his faithful companion, his dog Bowzer. Preceding him in death were his parents.

The union of she and Bob resulted in three children, Stephen Robert, Janece Louise and Nancy Ann.
Shirley’s teaching career began at a country school, she then taught 3rd and 4th grade at Ceresco Public School. Once her children were in school, she accepted a part time position as library aide at Wahoo Public Library where she worked for 4 ½ years. She then transitioned to West Ward Elementary school where she was the Librarian and taught library skills to students for 16 years. Shirley was asked to return to the Wahoo Public Library where she accepted the position as Director; she retired from that position in 1993. After her retirement from the public library, Shirley continued as a teacher’s aide at District 23 and later worked at Reliable Services.
Shirley was involved in many organizations in the Wahoo community; most prominent was her involvement in the First Presbyterian Church. Shirley practiced and displayed the importance of the biblical reference “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Matthew 7:12. Shirley also felt that a passage that guided her through her life and remained in her daily reflections was to show “compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Be helpful to one another and forgive one another, and to all these add love”. Colossians 3:12-14.
Shirley moved to Oxbow Assisted Living in Ashland, February 2023. She blended right into the community with ease and loved her new apartment which overlooked the garden. She joined other residents in arts and craft activities and games of Skip-Bo, Dominos, and cards. When she wanted to relax you would find her in her apartment listening to music, reading her books, devotions or her beloved Bible. In the spring and summer, you would find Shirley outside watering the flowers and rose bushes in the Oxbow garden. As she strolled along the path to her favorite rose bush (light pink) she would sing “Into the Garden”. Shirley loved to give and brighten the lives of her friends; she walked through the community areas and dining room and distributed candies nearly every day. When an aide, nurse, cleaning staff or assistant of any type came into her room, she would always tell them to take a piece of candy from the dish on her kitchen table.
Shirley went to church at Oxbow regularly. She connected immediately with the Methodist Minister and asked if he would conduct a Bible Study at Oxbow. He agreed and she gathered 8-10 residents who were interested in participating; they met for the first time on October 18, 2023.
Shirley is survived by her daughters Jan (Ray) Malousek of rural Wahoo and Nancy Tortora of Ridgefield, CT; grandsons Jeff Malousek of rural Wahoo, Peter Tortora ( Hershey, PA) and his fiancé Shefali Nagpal, Owen Tortora (Berkely, CA), formerly of Ridgefield, CT and granddaughter Kristy (Loren) Fortik of rural Wahoo. She had 5 great grandchildren: Tyson and Hailey Malousek, and Hudson, Hadley and Lucas Fortik. Shirley is preceded in death by her parents, sister Ethel Dedering, son Stephen Robert Yarmon, son-in-law Michael Tortora and grandson Matthew Robert Tortora.
