Phyllis Durante - January 24, 1963 - April 09, 2024

Departed: 04/09/2024 (New York)
Obituary Preview: Phyllis Durante, affectionately known as "Baby Phyl" by those who knew her best, passed away on April 9, 2024, at the age of 61, after a brave battle with cancer. Phyllis's journey began on January 24, 1963, in New York, NY, where she was born to the late Danny and Marie Licata. Bringing light to the lives of all she encountered, Phyllis will be remembered for her selfless nature, generous spirit, and loving heart. She was the beloved wife of Jeffrey Durante and the devoted mother of Danny, Jeffrey, and Joseph. Phyllis's nurturing love extended to her two daughters-in-law, Alison and Daniella, who were like her own. Her presence was a cornerstone to her family, who will cherish her memory, including her brother Vincent Licata, sister-in-law Jill, and their children Vincent and Rachel, as well as her nephews and nieces: Kara, Matt, Toniann, Bryan, Samantha, Mikey, and Kait. She will be remembered and her memories cherished by her brothers-in-law Joseph and Michael and sisters-in-law Annette and Michele. Each of them held a special place in her heart, and their lives were deeply enriched by her unwavering support and affection. For over a decade, Phyllis was a valued employee at Kelley, Drye and Warren, where her hard work, dedication, and camaraderie were evident in all she undertook. Her professional accomplishments, however, paled in comparison to the pride she took in her role as a mother. Phyllis's life revolved around her sons, and her joy was multiplied with the love and care she poured into her family. A woman of many interests, Phyllis found delight in the simplicity of life's pleasures. Whether it was preparing a meal with love, sharing laughter with friends, or basking in the warmth of the beach and sun, she embraced every moment fully and encouraged others to do the same. Phyllis's life is a testament to the impact one individual can have through simple acts of love and kindness. She will be deeply missed, but the legacy of her generosity and the tenderness of her love will continue to flourish in the hearts and lives of her family and friends. As we bid farewell to this remarkable woman, we honor the vibrancy with which she lived her life, the compassion she showed to all, and the love she bestowed upon her family, who stood at the center of her universe. Phyllis, "Baby Phyl," a beacon of generosity and love, leaves behind a trail of beautiful memories that will forever be cherished by those who were blessed to know her. Her spirit, a guiding light for us all, will never be extinguished. Just as the sun she so loved continues to rise and set, Phyllis's influence and love will continue to resonate with each new day, reminding everyone she's touched that life's greatest gift is the love we share.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It may also include information about their surviving family members, funeral arrangements, and any charitable donations in lieu of flowers.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a sense of closure and can be a therapeutic way for loved ones to celebrate the life of the deceased.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the family of the deceased or a close friend will write the obituary. Funeral homes or mortuaries may also offer assistance with writing and publishing the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary should include the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, and any notable achievements or accomplishments. It may also include information about their surviving family members, funeral arrangements, and any charitable donations in lieu of flowers.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and to the point. Aim for around 150-200 words, depending on the publication's guidelines.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the notice and make it more meaningful to readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online publication?

Contact the publication directly to find out their submission guidelines and deadlines. Some publications may have online forms or email addresses where you can submit the obituary, while others may require you to visit their office in person.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication and the length of the notice. Some publications may charge by the word or line, while others may offer package deals or discounts for longer notices.

Can I edit or revise an obituary after it's been published?

This depends on the publication's policies. Some may allow corrections or revisions, while others may not. It's best to proofread carefully before submitting the obituary to avoid errors.

What if I want to publish an obituary in multiple newspapers or online platforms?

You'll need to submit the obituary separately to each publication, following their individual guidelines and deadlines. You may also consider using an online obituary platform that allows you to publish the notice across multiple sites simultaneously.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary as a way to reflect on their life and legacy. This can be a unique opportunity to tell your own story and ensure that your wishes are respected after your passing.

What is a death notice versus an obituary?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed notice that provides additional biographical information and context.

Can I include humor or personal anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary is a celebration of the person's life, so feel free to include stories, quotes, or humorous moments that capture their personality and spirit.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published after submission?

The timeframe varies depending on the publication's schedule and deadlines. Online publications may publish the obituary immediately or within hours, while print newspapers may take several days or even weeks.

Can I request changes to an existing obituary template?

If you're working with a funeral home or mortuary, they may have standard templates for obituaries. However, you can certainly ask if they can make modifications to accommodate your needs or preferences.

What if I'm unsure about what information to include in an obituary?

Drafting an obituary can be overwhelming. If you're unsure about what to include or how to structure the notice, consider consulting with a funeral director, family member, or close friend for guidance.

This depends on the publication's policies. Some online platforms may allow links to memorial websites, social media profiles, or charity donation pages, while others may not.

How do I ensure accuracy when writing an obituary?

Double-check all facts and details before submitting the obituary. Verify dates, names, and spellings with family members or official documents to avoid errors.

What if I want to publish an anonymous or private obituary?

This is possible in some cases. Contact the publication directly to discuss options for anonymous or private notices. Keep in mind that some publications may have restrictions or requirements for these types of notices.

Can I republish an old obituary from years ago?

This depends on the publication's archives and policies. You may be able to find archived copies of old newspapers or online notices through libraries or genealogy websites.

Are there any specific rules or regulations for writing an obituary?

While there are no hard-and-fast rules, it's generally considered respectful to follow traditional guidelines for tone, content, and format. Additionally, be mindful of any local laws or regulations regarding death announcements and notifications.

Can I use social media platforms like Facebook or Twitter to share an obituary?

Absolutely! Social media can be a powerful tool for sharing news of a loved one's passing and connecting with friends and family. You can share a link to the online obituary or create your own post with details about the person's life and legacy.

What if I'm struggling emotionally while writing an obituary?

This is completely normal! Writing an obituary can be a difficult and emotional task. Take your time, seek support from loved ones if needed, and remember that it's okay to show emotions in your writing.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and meaning to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with the person's personality or legacy.

How do I handle corrections or mistakes in an already-published obituary?

Contact the publication directly as soon as possible to report any errors. They will work with you to correct the mistake and republish the revised notice.
