Obituary Preview: Janet Lee Dickman, 88, of Carthage, passed away at 7:08 AM Thursday morning, April 21, 2022, at The Elms rehabilitation center in Macomb, Illinois.
Janet was born February 6, 1934, the daughter of Glen and Maxine (Jacoby) Bishop in Macomb, Illinois. She graduated from Colusa High School in Colusa, Illinois. On February 5, 1956, she was united in marriage to Charles B. Dickman in Burnside, Illinois. He preceded her in death in 2015. Janet attended Burnside Christian Church before moving to Gainesville, Texas. When she returned, she attended Elvaston Community Church and more recently the First Baptist Church of Carthage.
Janet is survived by her son, Charles E. “Gene” Dickman of Mission, Kansas; a brother Jim (Mary) Bishop of Keokuk, Iowa; a sister, Gloria Brewster of Carthage, Illinois; as well as twelve nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Charles; a niece Connie Wollbrink, brother-in-law, Vern Brewster, and sister-in-law, Wanda (J.C.) Kirk.
Graveside services will be held Monday, April 25, 2022 at 2:00 PM at Moss Ridge Cemetery in Carthage.  Printy Funeral Home of Carthage is in charge of the arrangements.

Maxine Pulver Bennett - August 16, 1923 - April 18, 2022

Obituary Preview: Hazel Maxine “Aunt Max” Pulver Bennett, 98, of Carthage, passed away at 6:00 AM Monday morning, April 18, 2022, at Hickory Grove Apartments in Carthage.
Maxine was born August 16, 1923, the daughter of Howard and Alma Elizabeth (Guilliams) Warner in Leesburg, Illinois.  She attended school in Table Grove.  In 1939 she was united in marriage to Gene Smothers, and they had two children, Robert and Connie Jo.  They later divorced and in 1947 she was united in marriage to Leonard Pulver.  He preceded her in death in 1992.  In 1995 she married Robert Bennett and he preceded her in death in 2008.  In her younger years Maxine worked at the roller rink in Marshalltown, Iowa and the clock factory in Table Grove.  She later spent 26 years working at the Carthage Super Value grocery store as a cashier and then bookkeeper.  She was an honorary Eagle’s Auxiliary member and was the first madam president of the Eagle’s Club #3515 at Carthage in 1975-76.  She was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Carthage and had served as the Treasurer of the Women’s Club.  She loved her volunteer work at the Carthage Primary School serving as a “reading pal” for nine years.
Maxine is survived by her children, Robert (Katherine) Smothers of Bellevue, Ohio and Connie Jo Smith of Ft. Collins, Colorado; grandchildren, Kristi Wear, Becca Copeland, Brooke Wear, Joe Smothers, Deb Foxen, Alison (Nick) Smith-Leuthi, and Stephanie McKinley; great grandchildren, Jake Smothers and Joey, Jake and Jaden Anderson; a sister, Martha Lee Ulmer of Macomb; special nieces, Peggy Randall of Quincy; Deanne Brooks of Carthage, Carla Warner of Warsaw and and many nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; stepmother, Viola Hamm Warner; brothers, William Howard, Lewis E. and Ronald “Bud” Warner; sisters, Evelyn Derry and Gerry Warner.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday morning, April 23, 2022, at the First United Methodist Church in Carthage with burial to follow in Moss Ridge Cemetery in Carthage.  Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. Friday evening at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage.  Memorials may be directed to the Carthage Primary School in Carthage for reading interventions for the students or Hickory Grove Assisted Living for the sunroom project.  Printy Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Fredrick Gene Hartweg - February 06, 1934 - April 16, 2022

Obituary Preview: Fredrick Gene Hartweg, 88, of Carthage passed away at the Red Maple Care Center in Carthage on Saturday, April 16, 2022.
Gene was born February 6, 1934, the son of Fred and Edith (Alley) Hartweg in Keokuk, Iowa.  He graduated from Hamilton High School and went on to the University of Illinois for flight training.  He also served in the United States Army.  Gene was at heart a farmer but longed to fly at a young age and became an international pilot for Eastern and United Airlines.  After receiving his security clearance, he flew eight presidents over his career including serving as an Air Force One pilot for Ronald Reagan.  In his career he flew a 4H Grand Champion pig around the country for Honnegers Feed Company teaching it to walk up the steps and onto the wing to enter the plane.  He also flew the Beach Boys, crop dusting planes, the Hyannis Port shuttle and “bait planes” during the hi-jacking years, but Gene always returned to his family ground where he retired doing what he enjoyed most, farming.  Gene was a member of the Air Line Pilots Association International and the Ferris Christian Church.
Gene is survived by his sister, Barbara Kelly, of Quincy; nieces and nephews, Clifford (Judy) Kelly of Charles City, Iowa, Christine (Tom) Anders of Paxton, Illinois, David (Mary) Kelly of Mead, Colorado and Margaret (Brent) Roe of Quincy, Illinois; nine great nephews and nieces and their children as well as many cousins; and also a special friend, Nancy Jenkins, of Carthage.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law, Stuart Kelly; and a sister, Donna Rae Hartweg.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, April 27th, 2022, at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage with burial to follow in Moss Ridge Cemetery.  Visitation will be held Tuesday evening at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M.  Memorials may be directed to the Ferris Christian Church of Christianville in Haiti.  Printy Funeral Home of Carthage is in charge of arrangements.

Laura was born the daughter of Henry “Harry” and Claudine (Wheeler) Stokes in Rochester, New York.  She graduated from Dallas City High School and went on to receive her Bachelor of Arts at Carl Sandburg College and studied early childhood education at Western Illinois University.  She was united marriage to Calvin Heath, and they had two children, Eric and Amanda, they later divorced.  She was then married to Arthur Ellison and they later divorced.  Laura enjoyed eagle watching by the river, her dog Lincoln, and especially time with her family and grandchildren.
Laura is survived by her son, Eric (Connie) Heath of Dallas City, Illinois; her daughter, Amanda (Jason Kinman) Donahue of Dallas City; grandchildren, Alec (Autumn, fiancé) Heath, Braxton (Bailey Day) Heath, Draidan Heath, Chase Heath, Jamie Heath, Axel Heath and Jensen Heath, Tyler (Ashlei) Fuller, Trey Fuller and Nathan Woolfolk; great grandson, Kennett Fuller; and two brothers, Rich and Lee Stokes.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Aaron in infancy; a sister, Becky; and a brother, Jim Stokes.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday morning, April 13, 2022 at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage with burial to follow at Good Hope Cemetery, Good Hope, Illinois.  Visitation will be held from 3:00 – 7:00 P.M. Richard was born April 29, 1931, the son of Merlin Roscoe and Pauline (Butler) Smith in Plymouth, Illinois.  He served in the United States Army from 1952 until his Honorable Discharge in 1954.  In 1953, he was united in marriage to Louise Miller at the First Christian Church in Carthage. She survives. Richard was a life-long truck driver and farmer.  He was a member of the American Legion and First Christian Church in Carthage.
Richard is survived by his wife, Louise, of Burlington; a daughter, Jeana (Miles) Schroder of Danville, Iowa; and two grandchildren, Elizabeth and Anthony Schroder.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Brent Smith; a brother, Robert Lee Smith; and a sister, Inez Lawson.

Obituary Preview: Betty Joanne Munson Strubinger Boyer, 91, of Carthage, passed away on her birthday, Thursday, March 24, 2022, at River Hills Care Center in Keokuk, Iowa.
Betty was born March 24, 1931 in Carthage, the daughter of the late Marion A. and Bernice G. Landon Munson. She was united in marriage to Michael B. Strubinger December 20, 1953 in Carthage who preceded her in death February 16, 1997.  She later married James E. Boyer May 8, 2003 in Pittsfield, IL who died February 10, 2015. Betty was a member of the First Baptist Church of Keokuk, and had retired as a Caseworker after 40 years with the IL Department of Public Aid in Carthage.
Betty is survived by her daughter, Martha (Stephen) Youngmeyer of Carthage; and sons, Michael Charles (Susan) Strubinger of Weldon Spring, MO and Larry (William Hopfner) Strubinger of Chicago.  Also 4 grandchildren, Tanya (Robert) West, Kelli (Scott) Kirchoff, David (Hillary) Strubinger and Curtis (Cameron) Strubinger, and great-grandchildren Ava, Garrett, Alison, Abigail, Madeline, Charles Chase, Holden, Lorelai, and Virginia, Robert Charles (Charlie), also many nieces and nephews.
In addition to both husbands and parents, she was preceded in death by 5 brothers, Arthur, Frances, Marion, Leon and Weldon Munson and 4 sisters Blanche Webber, Irene Vacek, Agnes Campbell and Dorothy Kiesow.

Raymond Simmons - August 07, 1935 - March 24, 2022

Obituary Preview: Albert Raymond Simmons, 86, of Burnside, Illinois passed away peacefully with his daughters by his side at Carthage Memorial Hospital, Carthage, Illinois on March 24, 2022.  He was born August 7, 1935 to Albert Paul and Ruby (Hutchins) Simmons in Ft. Green, Illinois the fourth child and only boy in a family of five children.  Raymond graduated from Colusa High School in May of 1953.  He was united in marriage to Judith DeAnn Johnson on September 21, 1957 at Immanuel Lutheran Church where he was a lifelong member.
Raymond spent his life work in road construction starting at Burlington Roadbuilders of Carthage, Illinois and later for Gunther Construction of Galesburg, Illinois.  He was a proud member of the Teamsters Union.  He made many friends during these years, friendships that lasted his lifetime.  He was proud to follow in his father’s footsteps (Simmons Lightning Protection) and installed lightning rods (along with the assistance of his good friend Jay Brown who was like a son to him) on many homes, farm buildings and businesses in the tristate area.
An avid outdoorsman, he loved all things hunting and fishing. Many fond memories were made with friends and family enjoying the great outdoors and passing on his love of nature to his grandchildren.  In his earlier years motorcycling was a favorite hobby with Triumph motorcycles being his passion.  In later years he became a NASCAR fan and attended many races.  He looked forward to ending the day with conversation and a beer shared with friends at the VFW or Eagles Club in Carthage where he was a member.  Raymond liked to travel and made frequent trips to Daytona, Florida and Las Vegas, Nevada never hitting the big jackpot in Las Vegas unfortunately.  Having quick wit, he loved telling a good joke and making people laugh. He was a good friend and neighbor to many and could be counted on when needed.  Raymond spent the last few years of his life residing at Maple Grove/Hancock Village where his blue eyes and boyish smile were a favorite with resident’s and caregivers.
He is survived by;  his three children, Kevin Simmons, Pontiac, Illinois, Kim Collins of Columbia, Missouri and Kristi (Leroy) Lanning of Plymouth; his grandchildren Kent and Kane Simmons, Jason (C.J.) Linnenbrink, Jon (Heather) Linnenbrink, Jenny (Kevin) Peitz, Jillian Collins (Michael Wilson), Julia Collins (Jake Zuke),  Cole (Maggie) Lanning, and Shelby (Ross) Bruenger and eleven great grandchildren, Landon Randolph, Harper and Charlie Ann Lanning, Avery, Elliot Rae and Lucy Bruenger, Gunner Peitz, Emma and Stella Linnenbrink,  August and Ava Linnenbrink and Kyra, Kody and Kadence Simmons.  He is also survived by one sister Judith Hascup (the late Roy Hascup) of Greensboro, North Carolina.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a sister in childhood Docie, a special sister Diana and his oldest sister, Wanda Danner (late Jack Danner) of Rock Island.
Visitation will be held at Printy Funeral Home on Monday, March 28, 2022 from 3 to 8 PM with family meeting with friends from 6 to 8 PM.  A celebration of life will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church near Basco, Illinois with the Reverend Richard Hertenstein officiating at 10 A.M. Tuesday, March 29, 2022 with burial to follow at the Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Kathleen Duncan Gelhaar - April 24, 1941 - March 22, 2022

Obituary Preview: Kathleen (Duncan) Gelhaar ( formerly Tucker) passed away on March 22, 2022, in Greenville , North Carolina.  She was born on April 24, 1941, in Quincy, Illinois to parents Richard P. Duncan and Eleanor (Myers) Duncan. For 33 years she was married to William Gelhaar and resided in Carthage, Illinois. Mrs. Gelhaar graduated from Unity High School in Mendon, Illinois going on to complete a Bachelor of Science degree in Special Education ( 1963) at MacMurray College in Jacksonville. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Carthage, a former board member of the Carthage Public Library, as well as a member of the Carthage chapter of P.E.O. Mrs. Gelhaar began her teaching career as a Kindergarten teacher in Mt. Sterling, Illinois and later was a special education teacher at the Quincy Alternative School and Ferris School in Carthage, Illinois. She also served as a proofreader for Good Apple, inc., publisher of children’s’ educational materials, formerly located in Carthage. She was an avid reader, kind and generous and will be missed by family and friends. Kathleen was preceded in death by her daughter Margaret Anne Tucker on March 2, 2018, and her husband William Gelhaar on August 22, 2018.  She is survived by daughter Mary Tucker-McLaughlin of Greenville, North, Carolina stepdaughter Anne ( Eric) Martin of Burnside, Illinois, stepsons David ( Lisa) Gelhaar of Newport News, Virginia and James Gelhaar of Lake View, Colorado. She had two grandchildren Olivia and Jack McLaughlin of Greenville, North Carolina and eight step-grandchildren, Taryn (Martin) Mellert of Canton, Illinois , Kirstin (Martin) Protsman of Alexandria, Missouri, Reece Martin of Cambridge, Massachusetts, Taylor Gelhaar of Ohio, Allyson Gelhaar of Colorado, Michael Gelhaar of Newport News, Virginia, and Timothy Gelhaar of Fairview Heights, Il.
A memorial service will be held Sunday May 15, 2022, at 11:30 am at the First Presbyterian Church of Carthage located at 321 Main St, Carthage, IL 62321, followed by a gathering of family and friends. A burial service will be held following the gathering at 2pm at Ellington Memorial Presbyterian Church located at 4600 N 36th St, Quincy, IL 62305.

Berneita was born July 7, 1922, the daughter of James and Lelia (Langford) Clark in Bentley, Illinois.  She graduated from Quincy High School in 1940.  In 1942 she was united in marriage to Gilbert Smith in Dillon, South Carolina.  He preceded her in death in 1986.  Berneita had worked at the State Street Store in Quincy for many years and was a member of the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ in Carthage.  She enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading, and playing countless hours of Kings in the Corner and Skip-Bo.  You could also find her watching her beloved Days of our Lives and always looked forward to her weekly hair appointment. Berneita deeply loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren and her eyes would light up the room when she saw them.
Berneita is survived by her son, Gary Dennis Smith of Springfield, MO; grandchildren, Shawna Gerding and Cory Smith of Quincy IL; great grandchildren Shay and Lincoln Gerding of Quincy IL and numerous nieces and nephews. The family greatly appreciates the special medical attention and care that she received from her niece, Judy Gillogly.  Berneita always put the needs of others before herself and she will be greatly missed by family and friends.
Berneita was preceded in death by her husband Gilbert of 44 years, her parents, five sisters and one brother.
Graveside services will be held at 11:30 AM Monday morning, March 21, 2022, at Harmony Township Cemetery near Bentley.  Visitation will be held from 10:00 – 11:00 AM Monday morning at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage.

Thomas "TL" Lamar Farris - February 03, 1930 - March 15, 2022

Obituary Preview: Thomas Lamar “TL” Farris, 92, of Hamilton, Illinois, passed away at 5:15 AM on Tuesday, March 15, 2022, at Hancock Village in Carthage, Illinois.
TL was born on February 3, 1930, in Lydalisk, Arkansas, the son of June and Vesta (Martin) Farris. On December 28, 1983, he was united in marriage to Kathryn Treadwell Sawyer in Searcy County, Arkansas. She survives.
TL worked in forestry for fifty years as a white oak and walnut veneer buyer, and worked a side job as a tree-trimmer well into his 80’s. He was a member of the South Side Boat Club and enjoyed boating on the Mississippi River. TL also owned a sawmill as a hobby. TL was known as a master tinkerer and was always fixing something, even if it wasn’t broken. He also raised game chickens as a hobby. He was best known for his incredible pool skills, playing in tournaments throughout the Midwest and even playing Minnesota Fats. It was a sought-after privilege to play pool with him, and for the past 23 years, the “TL Farris Invitational Pool Tournament,” has been held in his honor.
TL is survived by his wife Kathryn Farris of Hamilton; three sons: Thomas (Heather) Farris, Jr. of Rushville, Illinois, Timothy (Dawn) Farris of Hamilton; and Michael (Boo)  Stevens of Washington State, daughter-in-law Shelli Sawyer of Hamilton; two brothers: Doug Farris of Adair, Illinois, and Dwain Farris of Fairfield Bay, Arkansas; his sister Sherry Alman of Norfork, Arkansas; five granddaughters: Ashley Bowers of North Carolina, Emily Erhart of Troy, Il, Abigail and Autumn,  of Rushville, and Sidnee Sawyer of Edwardsville; two grandsons: Connor Farris of Russia and Trevor Farris of Spokane Valley, Washington; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
TL is preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Bernice (Perry) Farris; three brothers: Austin, Raz and Gary Farris; and three sisters: Royce Holt, Lou Tester and Bobbie Cocker; and his step-son Kent Sawyer.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, March 27, 2022, from 2 to 4 pm at the Southside Boat Club in Keokuk, Iowa.
Memorials may be directed to South Side Boat Club for a memorial project to be determined.

Ronald Lee Schulz - March 01, 1953 - March 13, 2022

Obituary Preview: Ronald Lee Schulz, 69, of Carthage, passed away at 3:11 PM Sunday, March 13, 2022, at The Loft Rehabilitation Center in Canton, Illinois.
Ron was born March 1, 1953, in Carthage, Illinois, the son of Paul W.W. and Irene E. (Hobart) Schulz.  He graduated from Carthage High School in 1971 and went on to receive his A.A. in Accounting from Robert Morris College.  He worked in the Schulz Tax and Accounting family business over 40 years retiring in 2012.  Having an insurance license, he then began working for Harmony Mutual Insurance from 2012 until his retirement in July of 2018.  He then worked for Wal-Mart for a short time before his illness.  Ron had an active mind and pursued many varied interests and hobbies.  He was a member of the bowling league for over 20 years and also played in and organized the Carthage Golf Club Men’s league for many years.  He was an active member of the Lutheran Church and became a Synodical Authorized Minister in 2006.  He built computers, enjoyed photography and learned to play the guitar.  In his younger years he enjoyed stamp collecting.  Ron was an animal lover and helped with the Hearts of Hancock Humane Society and My Matthews House and lately enjoyed feeding the birds and squirrels.  He especially enjoyed activities with his grandchildren.
Ron is survived by his wife, Susie, of Carthage; three children, Joshua and Jeremy of Des Moines, and Jennifer (Cory) Clostermery of Carthage; three grandchildren, Caitlin, Jacob and Cara Clostermery; and two brothers, Loren (Connie) Schulz of Carthage and Donald (Rachel) Schulz of Arizona.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a niece in infancy, Deanna.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, March 18, 2022, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Carthage.  Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 P.M. Thursday evening at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage.  Memorials may be directed to the family of Ronald L. Dorothy was born November 6, 1942, in Downing, Missouri, the daughter of Cleo Clyde and Anna Lee (Bissell) Bradley. She graduated from Downing High School in 1959. She was married to Donald L. Eiffert in her mother’s backyard on June 15, 1960. Dorothy worked at Methode Electronics in Carthage for many years, retiring in 2010. She enjoyed planting flowers and attending rodeo’s with her husband, Don and her daughter Brenda. Dorothy was of the Protestant faith.
Dorothy is survived by her husband, Don, a daughter, Brenda (Greg Hammack) Hamman of Neosho, Missouri; two grandchildren, Tyler (Elizabeth) Neally of Carthage, and Tarah (Brock) Mosier of Bettendorf, Iowa; six great grandchildren, Veda Neally, Hudson Neally, Jamarion Robinson, Aria Mosier, Truett Mosier, and Rollins Mosier; she is also survived by her siblings, Donna Meeks of Kahoka, Missouri, Roger (Twila) Bradley of Neosho, Missouri, Debbie Lowe of Hamilton, Illinois, Dale (Lola) Bradley of Neosho, Missouri, Dixie (Larry) Fink of Carthage, Illinois, Deanna (Gene) Hitz, of Abbington, Illinois, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a step-father, Bill Haley, a son, Bradley Edwin Eiffert and a son in infancy Brackston Lee Eiffert; a brother, Buddy Lee Bradley and two brothers-in-law, Hollis Meeks and Don Lowe.

Obituary Preview: Danny L. Ellefritz, 84, of Ferris, Illinois passed away at 3:01 AM early Friday morning, March 11, 2022, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy.
Danny was born in Burnside, Illinois, the son of Lawrence and Edith (Edgecomb) Ellefritz on September 25, 1937.  He graduated from Colusa High School in 1955 as Salutatorian.  He served in the U. S. Army Reserves.  On September 10, 1960, he was united in marriage to Pat McIlmoil at her grandmother’s house in Elvaston.  Danny started out farming and later built steel bins and houses.  He was the Vice President of Kirby Buildings.  He then worked at the Union Electric Dam facility from 1982 until his retirement in in 1999.  Danny enjoyed bowling with his wife.
Danny is survived by his wife, Pat, of Ferris; three children, Jackie (Jill) Ellefritz of Burlington,Iowa, Jamie (Jennifer Imthurn) Ellefritz of Carthage, and Julie (Marc) Bohnenkamp of Ft. Madison, Iowa; grandchildren, Justin (Jami) Ellefritz, Jayla (Jordan McFadden) Ellefritz, Jacy (Courtney) Ellefritz, Jadrien (Elizabeth) Bohnenkamp, Adriana (Kody Vermazen) Bohnenkamp and Aleana (Nate Rose) Bohnenkamp; great grandchildren, Kensley, Jensen, Bryleigh, Paizlee and Adaleigh Ellefritz and Evelyn Bohnenkamp.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and five brothers, William “Jackie”, Gayle “Pete”, Glen “Bill”, Robert Short and Vernon Ellefritz.

Obituary Preview: Barbara Kay Clem, 74, of Burlington, Iowa, formerly of Bowen, IL and Mediapolis, IA, passed away Monday, February 28, 2022, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, Iowa.
Barbara was born July 25, 1947, the daughter of Maurice and Marjorie (Pierce) Crossland in Quincy, Illinois.  She graduated from Bowen High School and went on to attain her B.A. from Western Illinois University.  On November 4, 1967, she was united in marriage to Michael W. Clem at the Bowen United Methodist Church.  He preceded her in death on January 17, 2016.
Barbara began her teaching career at the Bowen Junior High School in 1970, and later at Burlington Notre Dame. She was currently an academic advisor for Carl Sandburg College in Carthage, a position she held for fourteen years.
While at home raising children, Barbara was a La Leche League leader where she formed many lifelong friendships and said these were the best years of her life.
Barbara was an active member of the Zion United Church of Christ Church in Burlington serving in many capacities and positions, including the social justice committee, food pantry, choir and handbells and serving as a lay speaker.  She was passionate about music, her artwork and actively working to make the world a better place.
Barbara is survived by four children, Eric (Rachel) Clem of Maysville, Iowa, Dr. Nathan (Courtney) Clem of Bainbridge Island, Washington, Dr. Amy (Daniel Beetner) Clem of Burlington, Iowa, and Michelle (Songkane) Keokham of Springfield, Illinois; grandchildren, Grace, Wyatt and Eleanor Clem, Hadley and Tatum Clem, Michael “Mica” Beetner and Ryan Keokham; siblings, Kenny (Carla) Crossland of Bowen, IL, Neil (Karen) Crossland of Fairfield, Iowa, Marjorie Cheesman of Republic, Missouri and Maynard (Gail) Crossland of Lexington, Kentucky; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Michael in 2016; her stepmother, Maxine Crossland; and a half sister, Melissa Crossland in infancy.

Obituary Preview: Cynthia Sue “Cindi” Melvin, 73, of Carthage, Illinois, passed away on Thursday, February 24, 2022, at Hickory Grove Assisted living in Carthage.
Cindi was born on September 21, 1948, in Keokuk, Iowa, the daughter of John F. and Millie (Elting) Scott. She graduated from Carthage High School in 1966, and later received an associate degree in early childhood education.
Growing up Cindi spent many summer days skiing behind the boat from their cabin in Sycamore Haven all the way to Kentucky Lakes.  Anytime she couldn't be on water she was in roller skates at the Crystal Ball Roller Rink that her parents had built.
Cindi was a member of the Red Hat Ladies, the Carthage VFW and the Eagles club. Cindi held many jobs in her life including Methode Electronics, Pact Head Start and driving a school bus for the Warsaw and Illini West school districts, which she absolutely loved. Cindi often referred to herself as a jack of all trades master of none.  She also taught baton twirling, was a Brownie leader, seamstress, dog groomer, bartender, co-owned Cakes-By-Design, co-owned The Flower Shop, and owned her own Janitorial Business.  Cindi's favorite hobbies were spending time with her children, grandchildren, roller skating, crafting, shopping, sewing, and as many of you know moving (she liked to keep the mailman guessing)!  Cindi was never a fan of cooking and she preferred to drive through, carry out, or have it delivered.
Cindi is survived by her three children; Melissa (Tom) Cook of Carthage, Dawn (Chad) Enzeroth of Warsaw, and Courtney (Adam) Lang of Navarre, Florida; grandchildren, Brett (Megan Brink) Cook, Bryce (Megan Doyle) Cook, Nicholas Hellyer, Natalie Hellyer, Shayna (Brock Hartweg) Harris, Wyatt Enzeroth, Conor Kiley, Ryann Lang, Logan Lang and Aaron Lang; great grandchildren, Harrison Brink, Theodore Brink, Trace Harris and Charlotte Hartweg; and a sister, Bonnie Bentzinger, her cat Lilly, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Obituary Preview: Kathryn D. “Kay” Hamman, 97, of Carthage, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, February 11, 2022.
Kay was born July 26, 1924, the daughter of Henry and Alma (Kiesel) Johnson in Centralia, Illinois.  She graduated from Gladbrook High School in Gladbrook, Iowa. While attending Carthage College, Kay met Elmer Hamman. On October 26, 1947, Kay and Elmer were married in Cedar Falls, Iowa.  He preceded her in death in 2007.  Kay loved being a farm wife and enjoyed leading a 4-H club for many years. She embraced the joy of loving her children and grandchildren; she was very pleased as they all became productive members of society. Kay was a member of New Testament Christian Church in Keokuk for many years, and was recently attending Ferris Christian Church.  Kay was an avid rose gardener and was known as the “Rose Lady” at church and throughout the community. Kay blessed others through bountiful generosity and sharing many, many bouquets of roses.
Kay is survived by four children, Janice (Dennis) Bruns of Brimfield, Illinois, Stephen (Sandra) Hamman of Carthage, Sandra (Mark) Bernhard of Naperville, Illinois and Jeannine (Joseph) Stevenson of Burnside, Illinois; grandchildren, Tim (Janie) Bruns, Matt (Maia) Bruns, John (Sarah) Hamman, Dave (Mary) Hamman, Glen Hamman, Allison (Matt) Schramm, Joel (Sara) Bernhard, Austin Stevenson, Scott (Andrea) Stevenson and Lance (Elisabeth) Stevenson; and eighteen great grandchildren.

Louise was born March 30, 1929, the daughter of Maurice and Lora (Vanzandt) Scott at home on the old Scott homestead east of Liberty, IL. She went to grade school in Adams County. Louise moved to west of Plymouth where she attended all four years of high school in Plymouth, IL graduating in 1947. She was then united in marriage to Edward Riggens soon after high school. Louise helped with the family farm and worked part-time at Menn’s Firestone in Carthage. She enjoyed doing volunteer work through RSVP and at nursing homes. She also enjoyed the great outdoors and God’s wonderful creation. Her greatest passion was music, especially southern gospel music and old-time country music. Louise spent time ministering at nursing homes and churches playing guitar and singing with the Mt. Carmel music group. She loved to play the electric organ for church. Louise attended Colmar Christian Church after Oak Grove closed. She loved the Lord, her family, grand kids, and great grand kids which were her pride and joy.
Louise is survived by her three children; Linda (Dave) Watson of McKinney, TX, Larry (Jackie) Riggens of Carthage, IL, and Lonnie (Bonnie) Riggens of Carthage, IL; five grandchildren, Scott (Lisa) Watson, Ryan (Alicia) Watson, John (Cheryl) Predmore, Wendi (Travis) Riggens-Miller, and Cara (Travis) Sanderson; and fourteen great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edward; brother, Russell Scott; and sister, Letha Clark.

Obituary Preview: Frances “Mardelle” Reed, 97, of Basco, passed away at 11:10 PM Saturday evening, January 29, 2022, at Hickory Grove Assisted Living in Carthage.
Mardelle was born July 29, 1924, in Basco, Illinois, the daughter of Harry and Hattie (Gavillet) Launer.  She attended Basco High School for three years and graduated from Hamilton High School in 1942.  On May 27th, 1943 she was united in marriage to Ernest Huls at Immanuel Lutheran Church near Basco.  He preceded her in death in 1978.  She was later united in marriage to Phillip Reed on February 14, 1981.  He preceded her in death in 1996.  Mardelle had worked at Keokuk Area Hospital for twenty-three years as a nurse’s aide and for Sherricks Home Health for three years. Mardelle was a life-long active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church serving in the Dorcus Doers, preparing packages for soldiers overseas and in the church sewing club that made quilts for school children.  She was a forty-year member of her card club and loved to exercise.  She served on the election board for many years and was the treasurer for the Bear Creek Veteran’s Memorial. Mardell loved to take her Model T to all the area parades. Her son, Gary and grandson Davey took great pleasure in driving it in the parades and showing off her prized possession.
Mardelle is survived by her daughter, Bonnie (Jack) Lafeber of Basco; daughter-in-laws, Margaret Huls of Basco and Cheryl Huls of Carthage; step-sons, Robert (Donna) Reed of Laughlin, NV and Gary (Mary) Reed of Quincy; 18 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, and 19 great-great grandchildren; a sister, Marilyn Cameron of Basco; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Ernest and Phillip; two sons, Jim Huls and Gary Huls; a stepson, Rolland Reed; a grandson, Jeff Huls; brothers, Leo Launer, Rodney Launer, Don Launer, Wilber Launer, Russell Launer and Homer Launer; sisters, Leota Antoine, Jean Berg, Wilma Shay, and Mabel Heagy.

Danny was born on December 11, 1949, in Macomb, Illinois, the son of Le Roy and Wilma (Schoch) Veach.  He was the oldest of four children.  On July 16, 2005, Danny married Holly Califf at the Camp Point United Methodist Church. They were together for twenty-five wonderful years.
Danny grew up in Bowen and graduated from Bowen High School in 1968. He then attended Southeastern Community College in Keokuk, Iowa, on a baseball scholarship. In 1974, he graduated from Western Illinois University with a Bachelor of Science in Education.
Mr. Veach began his teaching career at Abingdon High School. He taught Anatomy, Biology, and Physical Education. During his tenure at AHS, Danny coached football, basketball, and track. In 1977, the Abingdon Jaycees presented him with the Outstanding Young Educators award. Mr. Veach spent eighteen years in Commando Country.  Many students acquired nicknames from Coach Veach that stuck for life.  He touched many lives as a teacher, mentor, coach, and friend. Whenever he returned to Abingdon, Danny was greeted by former students that commented, he was a legend at AHS. Next, Danny was hired at Southeastern Junior High in Bowen. He taught Physical Education and coached basketball and Jr. High and High School baseball with the legendary David Swisegood.  Danny returned to coaching football for two years when the Central Southeastern Cooperative CSE was formed.  While at SE, Danny served on the first Student Assistance Team mentoring at-risk students. Danny taught P.E. at Central Junior High School for one year, There was not a classroom that Danny could not manage. He was a gifted teacher modeling respect and encouraging learning, while caring about individual students. Former students all remember starting class with the cadence, “Good morning, Savages.”
Danny had a photographic memory and was a walking encyclopedia.  It was almost impossible for him to miss a trivia question. His vast knowledge included; sports, geography, biology, anatomy, and history. Danny knew every High School mascot in the state of Illinois. He loved music with a passion and knew every song, artist, and record label.
While teaching, Danny was a DJ for weddings, class reunions, benefits, and birthday parties. He began this business with boxes of forty-five records and massive speakers. Eventually, he acquired an extensive collection of CDs.
Danny had a wicked sense of humor. He was the best guy ever to tell a joke or a story.  Danny had a tendency to be the life of the party. He had a passion for weightlifting, physical fitness, and slow pitch softball. Danny was an avid fan of the Atlanta Braves, Chicago Cubs, and Fighting Illini.
Danny is survived by his wife, Holly, son, Wesley Hudson, sisters; Cyndi Bigham and Susan Veach; sisters-in-law; Susan (Kirbach) Veach, Kristine (Califf) Gawin, and Janet Califf, brothers-in-laws, Tom Bigham (brother), and Steve Califf, mother-in-law, Kay Califf, numerous nieces and nephews; Joel (Jenni) Veach, Jenna (Joey) Eslick, Carly (Jesse Gallagher) Bigham, Aubrey Nelson, Lindsay and Andrew Califf, Haley and Hannah Gawin, Great-nieces and nephews include; Ezra and Quinten Veach, Ava, Archer, and Emerson Eslick, Breyer Bigham, Gabriel and Elijah Burgos.  Breyer was a frequent visitor at Aunt Holly and Uncle Dan’s house and Danny’s special buddy.  Danny is survived by numerous Aunts, Uncles, cousins, and friends. Danny was preceded in death by his parents, beloved brother David (Little Man), nephew Richard Barber III, and father-in-law Phillip Califf.
In accordance with Danny’s wishes there will be no funeral.  A private family burial service is pending at the Bowen Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date, Danny was diagnosed with esophageal cancer last year in July. He fought like a warrior through his treatments and the cancer returned. Danny received excellent care at the Blessing Cancer Center. Memorials may be made to the Blessing Cancer Center, in care of Holly Veach, 700 Wendell, Golden, Il, 62339.
