Departed: 04/29/2024 (West Warwick)
Obituary Preview: DONNA L. COSTA, 70, of West Warwick, Rhode Island, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 29, 2024.
Raised in Smithfield, Donna was the daughter of the late Louis J. Cornell and Charlotte (Watson) Cornell (Savory).
She was a quality control specialist for many years at Elmwood Sensors (Honeywell) in Pawtucket, then later for Greystone, Inc. in Lincoln, and retired in 2020. Before her retirement, Donna pursued her higher education from CCRI and the Rhode Island University where she graduated with her Bachelor of Science Degree in Animal Science. With that degree, she enjoyed her passion for caring for injured wild animals, some of which were brought home for around-the-clock care. She further educated herself on the various species of birds which she enjoyed caring for and feeding.
Donna’s love for animals started at a young age with dogs and especially horses. She was even a 4-H girl. She enjoyed many very early morning horse shows at the Rocky Hill Fair in East Greenwich, Rhode Island where she would stay most of the day. Donna would also go to the Washington County Fair in Richmond, Rhode Island, and The Big E in West Springfield, Massachusetts. Recently, checking off her bucket list, she went to the Devon Horse Show for the first time in Devon, Pennsylvania.
Donna also enjoyed a good baseball game. She was the number one fan of her grandsons’ sports, including baseball. She would often find time to watch local high school games, especially on TV whether baseball or softball which she enjoyed with her late (second) husband, Paul Lewis, the unofficial ball collector of the Mt. Pleasant Little League.
In addition to those favorites, Donna also enjoyed off-roading and car and truck shows, which she often participated in. She was a dedicated NASCAR fan and became an avid crafter creating many valuables with a room full of craft supplies, tools, sewing machines, and the like. She has made many quilts, afghans, throws, blankets, and other things that she enjoyed giving away.
Donna was the best mom and grandmother ever, always putting them first. She sometimes liked her grandsons better than her own kids. She is survived by her son Troy L. Costa of Cranston, daughter Darleen J. Costa-Quezada and her husband Ahmed, both of West Warwick. She was the proud grandmother of Xavier Quezada, Zaniel Quezada, Dorian Quezada, and grand-dog, Jack. She was the sister of James Cornell of Cranston and Gail (Cornell) Regnier of Johnston.
