James E. Rich, Sr. - August 13, 1937 - April 26, 2024

Departed: 04/26/2024 (Portsmouth)
Obituary Preview: PORTSMOUTH – James Errol Rich, Sr., 86, of the 100 block of Green Meadow Dr. passed away on Friday, April 26, 2024 in a local hospital. He was born on August 13, 1937 in Henderson, NC to the late Willie and Maggie Rich. Jim retired from the city of Portsmouth and was a member of Recue Church and D.A.V. Chapter 22; and was also a former member of Central Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Bill Rich
.
Jimmy, or Pop as he was called by everyone, was the definition of a family man. Pop and Granny created a home where there were no strangers and everyone was made to feel like family. Over the years, it ranged from having their little house bulging with the whole teen dept. to Sunday night family dinners where it was standing room only with three generations eating and the house filled with laughter! Pop was a cook in the Navy and he and Granny shared the cooking duties - and they always cooked enough to "feed one more." Their little round kitchen table and the time spent around it is a memory we will all cherish. Pop and his sweetheart, Jane, were married over 67 years and their devotion to each other was evident. When she spent several months in the hospital/rehab last year - Pop drove there every day and sat for hours at her bedside. He loved his kids, grand kids, and even great grandchildren, and would often text and call - he even learned how to use emojis!
Pop was a faithful man of God and was active in his church and served in many ministries over the years. He had a heart for missions and gave faithfully over the years to further the cause of Christ. He and Granny could often be seen reading the Bible together and having their devotions.
While we will miss him so much - we are confident that he is in Heaven with many family and friends who have gone on before.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jane Rich; two daughters, Cindy Chapman and her husband Scott and Rudi Winther and her husband Eric; two sons, James “Jim” Rich, Jr. and wife Vanda and Troy Rich and wife Carmen; nine grandchildren, Megan (JJ), Brent (Ashley), Cory (Megan), Kendall (Amber), Cody (Caroline), Justin, Alex (Haley), Caleb (Lauren) and Abby; and ten great grandchildren.

Norman Ray Ambrose - January 15, 1949 - April 26, 2024

Departed: 04/26/2024 (Portsmouth)
Obituary Preview: Ray, 75, passed away at home on April 26, 2024. A native of Norfolk, VA, he was preceded in death by his parents, Donald Ambrose, Sr. and Dorothy Ambrose Hooker; two brothers, Donnie and David Ambrose; and son-in-law, Bobby Fiedler, III.
Ray is survived by his wife of 55 years, Wanda; two daughters, Angie Vaughan (Darren), and Debbie Rae Walden (Scott); adopted son, Johnathan Jarman; two sisters, Becky Ware (Bob), and Sandy Pusateri (Richard); two sisters-in-law, Marianne Ambrose and Debbie Ambrose; seven grandchildren, Nikki Fiedler, Bobby Fiedler IV (Meagen), Katie Fiedler, Samantha Watkins, Cheyane Emerson (Hal), Austin Walden and Brandon Vaughan (Kayla); eleven great-grandchildren, Braylen, Hope, Raylee, Maelynn, Zoey, Ryder, Ariel, Eve, Riley, Isla, and Addisyn; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
He was known for his grilled steaks, Elvis collection, disdain for technology, snappy comebacks, sarcasm and quick wit. He spoke his mind, often uncensored, with complete honesty and didn’t flinch to tell you exactly as he saw it. He always marched to the beat of his own drum and was one of a kind. He was a loving and proud father, grandfather and great grandfather. He had a kind and generous heart and loved his family dearly. Family was the center of his life and one of his greatest joys was spoiling his grandchildren. He was so loved. We will miss him and forever carry him in our hearts.
He cherished his yearly fishing trips with his dad and brothers and missed them deeply. We are comforted to know that they are together again boating, fishing and hunting. We are certain that his best four-legged little buddy, Dallas, is happy to see him.
