Madeline was married to the love of her life, Tony, for 68 years. They enjoyed doing everything together…going to the movies, sitting at the beach, watching their shows on TV and of course weekly dinners at Chili’s with a margarita for Madeline. They were still best friends and deeply in love when Tony passed in 2022. Life centered around family and friends. Madeline loved entertaining, visiting friends and family and especially “the drop-in”. She took photos of every single gathering and special event and left us with over 100 photo albums to cherish. Her love for all was unconditional and profound. She was selfless, always caring more about everyone else than herself. Every visit or call with Madeline ended with an “I love you”. Her warmth and kindness to all was a true gift she shared with everyone she met. Special thanks to the staff and caregivers at Artis Senior Living where Madeline resided in her final months and Compassus Hospice for their amazing care.

Barbara Ross - March 15, 1936 - April 27, 2024

Departed: 04/27/2024 (East Haven)
Obituary Preview: Barbara Martino Ross 88, of East Haven, beloved wife of the late George R. Ross Jr., passed away on April 27, 2024 at the Ark Healthcare at Branford Hills. Loving mother of Kevin G. (Ashley) Ross of Durham. Cherished grandmother of Braydon Samuel Ross. Barbara was born in New Haven on March 15, 1936 daughter of the late Samuel P. and Antoinette Giannotti Martino. Prior to her retirement, Barbara was an accountant for Yale University. She was an incredible athlete. She was one of the top duckpin bowlers ever to come out of Connecticut. She played semi pro softball in the late 1950’s; but most importantly, she was happiest just playing catch with her grandson in the backyard. She was his biggest fan, and never missed one of his little league games. But also, she was like ALL the boy’s honorary Nonnie. That was her grandma title. She was an incredible cook; especially baking. Her pride and joy was the Easter Brunch that she hosted for ALL her extended family. It was legendary, and something that everyone looked forward to. Also, she made the greatest apple pie that I’ve ever had the pleasure to eat. And finally, if you can include her love of travel. She drove cross country three times, also trips to Italy, Mexico, Spain, Portugal, France, Germany, The Netherlands, Austria, and many others. She loved immersing herself in other cultures, and was accepting and progressive with welcoming others, even at a time when it wasn’t trendy to do so. She was an extraordinary woman. She loved her family unequivocally, but her grandson Brayden was in a league of his own with her. He was her whole world. Nothing, or no one, made her happier.
Her funeral procession will leave the PORTO FUNERAL HOME, 234 Foxon Rd. (Rte. 80), East Haven WEDNESDAY at 12:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Pio of Pietrelcina Parish in St. Vincent de Paul Church at 12:30 p.m. Interment will follow in Beaverdale Memorial Park (New Haven). Family and friends may call WEDNESDAY from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's often published in newspapers, online obituary websites, or funeral home websites to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They help to notify others of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a chance for loved ones to pay tribute and celebrate the person's life.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or cremation service may assist with writing the obituary or provide a template for the family to use.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), surviving family members, and any notable achievements or hobbies. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or website. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Online obituaries often have more flexibility in terms of length and content.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online obituary websites allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the obituary and help readers remember the person.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and deadlines. Some newspapers may have online submission forms or email addresses where you can send the obituary.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as part of their estate planning or as a way to ensure their legacy is told in their own words. This can be a unique opportunity for self-reflection and creative expression.

What is an online obituary?

An online obituary is a digital version of a traditional printed obituary. It's typically published on a website or social media platform and can include additional features such as photos, videos, and condolence messages from friends and family.

How long do online obituaries stay posted?

The duration that an online obituary remains posted varies depending on the website or platform. Some sites may keep them up indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period, such as 30 days or one year.

Can I edit an online obituary after it's been posted?

What is the difference between an obituary and a eulogy?

An obituary is a written notice announcing someone's death and providing biographical information. A eulogy is a speech or written tribute delivered at a funeral or memorial service to celebrate the person's life and legacy.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

What is an "in lieu of flowers" donation?

This phrase indicates that instead of sending flowers to the funeral service, donations can be made to a specific charity or organization in memory of the deceased. This can be a meaningful way to honor their legacy.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can search online archives of newspapers, genealogy websites, or local libraries for old obituaries. Many websites also offer paid services for searching historical records.

Can I write an anonymous obituary?

In most cases, no. Obituaries typically require verification of identity and relationship to the deceased before they're published. Anonymous submissions may not be accepted due to concerns about accuracy and potential misuse.

What if I'm unable to find information about my ancestor's death?
