Obituary Preview: Susan “Sue” C. Haug, 76, passed away Thursday, December 30, 2021 at the Eastridge Nursing Facility in Centralia, Kansas.
She was born to Omer E. Haug and Lucille M. (Noll) Haug on June 29, 1945 in Seneca, Kansas.
After graduating from Saints Peter and Paul High School in Seneca, Sue attended Sacred Heart College/Newman University and Wichita State University earning her Bachelor of Science degree.  She also attended Kansas State University and received her Master of Science degree in Speech and Hearing Pathology.  Following her studies and throughout her career, Sue taught at the Institute of Logopedics Clinic in Emporia for nine years.  Then, she worked for USD #380 including Corning, Centralia, Frankfort, Axtell, Summerfield, Bern, St. Benedict, Baileyville, and Seneca for 33 years.
Sue spent her life serving God, her family, her church, her students, and her community.  She touched many lives throughout her lifetime.
Sue was preceded in death by her parents; and her siblings:  Bobbie (Gilbert) Osterhaus, Cotton (Charlotte) Haug, Sister Connie Haug, George Haug, Larry (Mary Ellen) Haug, and Geriann (Ron) Henry.
She is survived by the following siblings:  Sister Dominic Haug of Great Bend, Kansas; Dora (Bill) Cross of Centralia, Kansas; Jeanne (Tom) Heiman of Wichita, Kansas; Mike (Betty) Haug of Seneca, Kansas; Mary Haug of Centralia, Kansas; Regina (Ed) Aldrine and Cathie Wynkoop both of Topeka, Kansas; she is also survived by LOTS of nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews; and great-great nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 4, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at the Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca, Kansas.  The body will lie in state at the Popkess Memorial Chapel in Seneca, Kansas on Monday, January 3, 2022 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  A visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca with a rosary recited at 7:00 p.m.  The interment will be made in the Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be made to a fund yet to be designated by the family and sent in care of Popkess Memorial Chapel, 814 Castle, Seneca, Kansas  66538.

Lela Katherine Campfield - July 13, 1931 - November 24, 2021

Obituary Preview: Lela Katherine Campfield, 90, of Centralia, Kansas, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 24, 2021 at the Eastridge Nursing Facility, where she resided.
Lela was born on July 13, 1931 in Corning, Kansas the daughter of Harry and Mildred (Mohringer) Fowler.  She was married to Harold “Dick” Eugene Campfield on February 18, 1951.  They made their home in the Centralia area. They were blessed with three children, Forrest, Morris, and Mark.
Lela graduated from Centralia High School in 1949.  She was remembered fondly by many during the time she owned and operated the D & L Drive-In in Centralia.  Lela poured love into everything she made and took great pride in the fact that she made the best doughnuts around.  Lela also worked part time as the Postmaster Relief in the Centralia Post Office for 20 years before retirement.
Lela was driven by love of the Centralia Community and enjoyed her involvement in the Centralia Methodist Church, the Centralia Cemetery Board, the Centralia Boosters, the Eastern Star, and numerous organizations.  She was always willing to lend a hand for the good of the community.  She and Dick enjoyed lifelong friends and were known for their love of laughter.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dick; son, Forrest Campfield; and two brothers, Robert Fowler and Ralph Fowler.
Lela is survived by her two sons, Morris and his wife, Connie, of Lincoln, Nebraska and Mark and his wife, Ruth, of Manhattan, Kansas; five grandchildren, Todd Campfield of Lincoln, Nebraska, April Campfield of Austin, Texas, Kelsey (Dan) Halverson of Lincoln, Nebraska, Garrett (Lisa) Campfield of Rockwall, Texas, and Grant (Markie) Campfield of Carrollton, Texas; and four great-grandchildren, Claire Halverson, Jack Halverson, Cora Campfield, and Theodore Campfield.  She will also be remembered by her beloved nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 1, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at the Centralia Community Church-West.  Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. to service time at the church.  The interment will be made in the Centralia Cemetery.  Lela will lie in state on Tuesday, November 30, 2021 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Popkess Memorial Chapel.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Centralia Community Church or Eastridge Nursing Facility sent in care of the Popkess Memorial Chapel, 814 Castle, Seneca, Kansas 66538.

Mildred Frances Streeter - June 01, 1939 - November 21, 2021

Obituary Preview: Mildred Frances Streeter, 82, of Vermillion, Kansas died Sunday, November 21, 2021 at her grandson’s residence in Raytown, Missouri.
She was born on June 1, 1939 to Casper L and Dorothy M. Carroll.  She grew up strong willed and big hearted.  Mildred worked as a cleaning lady for many years, making sure other people’s lives were kept tidy.  She loved the countryside with all its beauty.  She loved the quiet and peacefulness that the country life provided.  She loved watching old western movies and football.  She enjoyed listening to country music and artists like Mel Tillis, Dwight Yoakam, and Willie Nelson to name a few.
Mildred is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Paul L. Streeter; as well as her ex-husband, Charles Collins, Sr., whom she had seven children with; and a brother, John L. Carroll.
Mildred is survived by her seven children, Sharon S. Eddy, Cheryl L. West, Ruby L. Collins, Charles R. Collins, Jr., Billy J. Collins, Albert A. Smith, and Stephanie R. Burger; a sister, Margaret Rose Strong; a step daughter, Becky Humphreys.  She leaves behind nine grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and a niece and nephew.  She also helped raise many other children along the way, whom she considered her kids.
Mildred was cherished by many and loved by all.  May she rest eternally in paradise.
Graveside service will be Saturday, November 27, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at the Centralia Cemetery.  A visitation will be held Saturday, November 27, 2021 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the Popkess Memorial Chapel in Seneca, Kansas.  Mildred will lie in state Wednesday, November 24, 2021 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Popkess Memorial Chapel.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Vermillion American Legion Post #257 sent in care of Popkess Memorial Chapel 814 Castle, Seneca, Kansas  66538.

Penny Lee Zeller Hasenkamp - December 13, 1956 - November 19, 2021

Obituary Preview: Penny Lee Zeller Hasenkamp of rural Baileyville, Kansas passed away at the age of 64 on Friday, November 19, 2021 surrounded by family at the Onaga Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.
Penny was born December 13, 1956 in Manhattan, Kansas.  She was one of four daughters born to William B. Evans and Anita (Ochs) Evans.  She was raised in the St. George community and graduated from St. George High School in May of 1974.  She attended Cloud County Community College and graduated in May of 1976 with a degree in journalism.
While attending college, she met her first husband, Daniel Zeller, of Paxico, Kansas.  They were married on June 12, 1976.  Three children were born to this union.  They later divorced.
On Labor Day weekend of 1991, she met her second husband, Glen Lee Hasenkamp.  They were united in marriage on January 18, 2012.
Penny offered years of child care services to many children in the Paxico area.  She was later well known for her work with The Smoke Signal in Wamego, Kansas.  After meeting her husband, Glen Lee, and moving to Baileyville, Kansas she worked for KANZA Land Radio for a number of years.  Penny then worked for the Seneca Chamber of Commerce and Midland Hospice.
Penny enjoyed being actively involved in all her children’s school activities and being able to attend all their events.  Over the years, Penny had many hobbies that she enjoyed. She was an avid camping, fishing, and outdoors woman.  She enjoyed passing these activities along to her grandchildren.  Penny had a passion for photography and enjoyed traveling with her husband and being able to capture all kinds of beautiful scenery.  She was also a proud member of the Columbian Theater Art group in Wamego, Kansas where she had the opportunity to showcase her photography.  Her all-time favorite hobby was spending time with her grandchildren and adopted grandchildren all of whom she dearly loved.
Penny is survived by Glen Lee, her loving husband of 30 years of the home. Her children, Amy (Kieron) Butler of Hartselle, Alabama; Amber (Anthony) Heigert of Paxico, Kansas; and Andy (Shawn Hulsing) of St. George, Kansas;  her two sisters, Nancy Tobias of Overland Park, Kansas and Billie Anderson of Missoula, Montana.  As she affectionately called them her “Babies” Bryce (Jaden Kincaid) Schultz, Bradyn and Cierra Schultz, Zowie Butler, Henry and Madelyn Heigert, Jed and Kiptyn Zeller, Byren Hulsing, and her many surrogate children and grandchildren.   She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Sharlot Barr; and brother-in-law, Robert Barr.
Penny will lie in state at Popkess Memorial Chapel in Seneca, Kansas on Monday, November 22, 2021 and the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.  She will then lie in state at Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home in Manhattan, Kansas on Tuesday, November 23, 2021 and the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at the funeral home in Manhattan, Kansas on Wednesday, November 24, 2021 at 11:00 a.m.  Interment will follow at the Westmoreland City Cemetery in Westmorland, Kansas.

Donna D. Fenske - August 09, 1948 - November 09, 2021

Obituary Preview: Donna Dee (Farson) Fenske of Pawnee City, Nebraska, passed away on November 9, 2021, peacefully surround by her family.
Donna Dee, or Dee, or Deedee, as she was known by many, was born on August 9, 1948 in Nebraska City, Nebraska to Donald and Gayle Farson.  She graduated from Nebraska City High School in 1966 and went on to graduate from Peru State University where she earned her degree to be a teacher.
After a short time in Texas where Dee began her family and career, the family moved to Iowa and Dee began working as a Teacher for the Glennwood School District, where she touched the lives of many during her nearly 30 years as a teacher.  She taught a few different grades at the elementary level, and then went back to Peru State to earn her Masters degree.  To finish her career, she was the science teacher for the 4th and 5th graders, something she really enjoyed.
Dee and Harlan Fenske, originally high school sweethearts, married and began their lives together in 2004 with their dog, Jamy.  They quickly realized they needed to retire so they could keep up with their many activities.  She would say that she never had such a social life as she did after her retirement, and she loved the family she gained.  Together, they enjoyed attending car shows, traveling to see their children, and especially enjoyed all the time they spent with their grandchildren.  They spent time wintering in Texas near the Rio Frio River and spending summers on their pontoon boat at Perry Lake in Kansas.
Dee also enjoyed playing Bridge with her friends in Pawnee City, sewing with her friends in Texas, and gardening at her home.
Dee is survived by her husband, Harlan of Pawnee City, NE; son, Jason (Dana) Lovejoy of Corvallis, OR; daughters Jill (John) Connolly of Woodland Park, CO; and Amy (Troy) Peterson of Weatherford, TX; and her grandchildren Katherine Connolly and William Peterson.  She is preceded in death by her parents, Don and Gayle Farson.
The world has lost a wonderful, kind, loving woman.
Services will be at a later date and time.

Rex O. Reist - May 09, 1926 - October 29, 2021

Obituary Preview: Rex Orin Reist, 95, passed away Friday, October 29, 2021 at Crestview Manor in Seneca, KS.  Rex was born May 9, 1926, six and a half miles north of Seneca on the family farm.  He was the sixth child of Fred and Mary Humm Reist.
Rex attended Rock Country School through eighth grade, and then Seneca Public High School where he graduated in 1944.  After high school, he farmed with his father and brother, Willis.
In March of 1950, he married Mary Lizabeth Curtis and they lived on the Reist family farm for 65 years.  From this union three children were born David, Randall, and Julie.  Late in his farming career he also worked at the Bern Seed Company.  At age 70, he retired from farming and the seed house, but soon decided he didn’t have enough to do.  So, he worked as a slot tech at the Sac and Fox Casino for 15 years retiring completely at age 85.  In 2015, Rex and Mary left the farm and moved to Seneca.
Rex was an active community member serving on boards for USD 488, Nemaha County Coop, Frieden’s United Church of Christ, Nemaha County Home Health, Axtell Hospital, and Seneca Squares.  Rex and Mary were accomplished dancers being active in Square Dancing clubs in Seneca and DuBois.  They also enjoyed polka, ball room, and round dancing.  They also couple skated in their younger years.  Although not an athlete in high school because he had to work on the farm, Rex was a good athlete playing town team baseball and softball for Seneca, DuBois, Bern, and Frieden’s UCC.  He continued playing softball to age 68.  Rex also loved watching his children, grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren play ball and seldom missed a game.
His family and those who knew Rex were entertained by his quick wit and many one-liners. He had an endless supply of quips that seemed to fit any occasion. Even to the end, the Crestview staff shared the new sayings they had learned.
Rex was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Arlene Bates, Leola Farwell, Eleanor Stepan, and his twin brothers, Wilfred and Willis.
Surviving Rex is his wife, Mary, of 71 years; his son, David (Marcia) of Highland, KS, their children, Thad, Lawrence, KS, and his son, Rex; Tabitha (Michael) Steiner, Overland Park, KS, and their children Soren and Saffi; Thatcher (Anne), Salt Lake City, UT, and their children David, Alissa, and Collin; and Tessa (Tobias) Hathorn, Boulder, CO, and their children Noelle and Louise; his son, Randall (Sally) of Norman, OK, their children, Miranda (Matt) Gray, Katy, TX, and their children, Lauren and Avery; Laura (Dustin) Horstkoetter, Norman, OK, and their children Alison and Aaron; his daughter, Julie (John) McIntire, Seneca, KS and their children, Michelle (Craig) Sundstrom, Delaware, OH, and their children, Henry and Violet; Philip (Jen) Lockhart of Seneca, KS, and their children, Dayton and Spencer; and a sister, Mary Lou Morris, of Hamilton, MT.
Funeral Services will be held Thursday, November 4, 2021, at 10:30 a.m. at Frieden’s United Church of Christ eleven miles north of Seneca.  Interment will be made in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends Wednesday, November 3, 2021 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Popkess Memorial Chapel in Seneca, KS.  Memorials may be made to Crestview Manor Nursing Home or Seneca American Legion Baseball sent in care of Popkess Memorial Chapel, 814 Castle, Seneca, KS. 66538.

Martha "Lois" Visser - December 20, 1934 - October 20, 2021

Patient, kind, doesn't envy or boast and isn't proud; not rude or self-seeking, not easily angered and keeps no record of wrongs. Doesn't delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. Always protects. Always trusts. Always hopes. Always perseveres. Never fails to love.
Martha Lois (Stowell) Visser, 86, passed away at Country Place Assisted Living in Seneca, Kansas on Wednesday, October 20, 2021. Lois was born on December 20, 1934, to Percy and Cecile (Williams) Stowell on their family farm southeast of Olsburg, Kansas.  She and her older brother, Lee, attended Oak Grove School a couple miles from their home before attending high school at Olsburg High School. Lois went on to earn her bachelors and masters degrees in home economics from Kansas State University. Lois was a talented seamstress and enjoyed sewing for herself and her family.  She made the classic satin dress that she wore when she walked down the aisle of the Olsburg United Methodist Church to marry Eugene Sylvester Visser on October 7, 1962. Lois and Eugene recently celebrated 59 years of marriage. They began their married life on Eugene's family farm south of Riley. In 1966, during the Fort Riley expansion, they relocated their farming and cattle operation to Goff, Kansas in Nemaha County, where they worked and resided for more than 55 years.
Lois was a life-long learner, sharing that love of learning first in the classroom and then with their three children, seven grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. After receiving her bachelor’s degree, she taught home economics at Clyde High School in Clyde, Kansas, then went back to complete her master’s degree before joining the staff at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. After marrying Eugene, Lois dedicated her life to perfecting the art of being a farm wife, homemaker, gardener and mother. She was active in a local neighborhood club, Family and Community Education (FCE) Extension Club, and project leader for the Red Vermillion 4-H Club. Lois was an avid gardener, famous among her grandchildren for her strawberries and sweet corn.
Lois lived her Christian faith daily. She was a dedicated member of the Corning Trinity United Methodist Church, participating in UMW (United Methodist Women), and helping with Vacation Bible School, Sunday School, and in later years, playing the piano and organ. She was a quiet, kind and gentle soul, always willing and looking for ways to help and care for others. She took great joy in caring for her grandchildren, and she and Eugene were faithful attendees of activities and events for all their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Lois is survived by her loving husband, Eugene of the home; and her three children, Carol (Judd) Meyer of Sabetha, Kansas and their children Darla (John) Dwyer of Scottsbluff, NE; Amanda (Wil) Edelman and Wiliam, Adalynn, Gracie and Harv of Sabetha; and Zachary Meyer of Sabetha; Sharon Lindell of Riley and her children Haley (Robert) Dulniawka of Manhattan; Kyla (Dillon) Tittel and Camryn of Riley; Tyler Lindell of Sabetha; and Ryan Lindell of Riley; and Gregory Visser of Goff (partner Samantha Wichman and her daughters Lilly and Maggie); brothers-and sisters-in-law Beverly Stowell of Beloit, Irene Visser of Cedar Rapids, IA, Virgil and Marion Visser of Wakefield, and Albion and Jualdene Visser of Sydney, NE.
Lois was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Lee Stowell; her father-and mother-in-law Ed and Martha Visser, and brothers- and sisters-in-law George and Lorene Visser, Leroy and Evelyn Visser, Harold Visser, Evelyn and Xen Smith, and Ken and Rosemary Visser.
Funeral services will be Monday, October 25, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. at the Corning Trinity United Methodist Church in Corning, Kansas.  Visitation will be Sunday, October 24, 2021 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Popkess Memorial Chapel in Seneca, Kansas.  Interment will be in Corning Cemetery.  Memorial contributions can be made to a fund yet to be designated by the family and sent in care of the Popkess Memorial Chapel, 814 Castle, Seneca, Kansas   66538.

Margaret Joyce DeBord - October 04, 1930 - October 09, 2021

Obituary Preview: Margaret Joyce DeBord, 91, of Centralia, Kansas, peacefully passed away Saturday, October 9, 2021.
Joyce, as she was known, was born October 4, 1930, in Centralia, Kansas to William & Lillie (Ward) Horalek.  She was married to Louis Nelson DeBord on June 14, 1953.  Following their wedding, they made their home in the Centralia area.  Joyce & Louis were blessed with three children, Brete, Mary Margaret and Blake.  They owned and operated Horalek & Myers Clothing Stores and were also farmers and ranchers.
Joyce was a life-long educator.  She graduated from Centralia High School and went on to receive her bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Kansas.  Over the years she taught English in Topeka, Holton and Axtell, with her longest tenure being in Centralia.  While at Centralia High School, she was assistant principal, directed countless school plays, sponsored Kay Club, and served as Junior class sponsor (during which time she enjoyed playing “matchmaker” for the Junior-Senior Prom).  Later in her career, Joyce taught College English for Highland Community College in Highland, Kansas.
Joyce’s “extended” family included many friends and former students.  One of her favorite times of the year was Memorial Day weekend, which included the Centralia High School Alumni Banquet.  During that weekend, there was a constant stream of visitors to her and Louie’s home.
Joyce was heavily involved in the Centralia community where she was a member of the Centralia Community Church and active in numerous organizations.  She was a member of KNEA, University of Kansas Alumni Association, and the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority Alumni Association.  While at KU, she was featured on the cover of the Spring, 1949 Jayhawker magazine.  Although Joyce was an avid Jayhawk fan, she would proudly don the Royal Purple in support of her grandsons and Kansas State Baseball.
Later in her years, she was a resident at Redbud Plaza Assisted Living in Onaga, Kansas.  Then, she returned to Centralia where she lived at Eastridge Nursing Facility until the time of her death.  Joyce’s family was blessed that she loved both of those facilities and the staff that cared for her.
Joyce is survived by her son, Blake, and his wife, Brenda, of Manhattan; her daughter-in-law Joan DeBord of Shawnee; her grandchildren, Jennifer DeBord of Shawnee, Heather (Jerry) Reyes of Las Vegas, NV, Maggie (Daniel) Jones of Topeka, Blair (Ellen) DeBord of Germantown, TN, Brooks DeBord of Sioux Falls, SD; and her great-granddaughters Isabelle Jones, Evie DeBord, Ruthie DeBord, and Lena Danielle Jones.  She will also be remembered by many nieces & nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Louis; an infant daughter, Mary Margaret DeBord; and her son, Brete DeBord.

Obituary Preview: Margaret E. Casey, 94, passed away at Life Care of Seneca, Kansas on Friday, July 16, 2021.  Margaret was born the oldest child of Frank M. and Mary J. (Fuqua) Dickey on June 16, 1927 in Kansas City, Missouri.
Margaret was a graduate of Quenemo High School and from Grace Hospital School of Nursing in Hutchinson, Kansas as a Cadet Nurse.  She married Cletus W. Casey on September 8, 1950 in Topeka, Kansas.
Margaret was a retired Registered Nurse. She worked at Onaga Community Hospital for 25 years.  Prior to that, she worked at the VA Hospital in Topeka, Kansas.  Being a woman of strong faith, Margaret was a member of Corning United Methodist Church and Lowman’s United Methodist Church in Topeka, Kansas.  She volunteered at the Mission in North Topeka for 20 years. She was a member of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary.  She enjoyed crafts, ceramics, crochet, and knitting.  She also drew and painted.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; an infant brother; and a sister, Helen Oshel.  She is survived by her children, Ron (Cathy) Casey of McCracken, Kansas; Deb (Frank) Rivard of Stockbridge, Michigan; and Gael (Lee) Sanders of Baileyville, Kansas; a sister, Rosalyn Goodman, of Topeka, Kansas; a brother, Howard (Martha) Dickey, of Richmond, Kansas; Margaret’s pride and joy were her grandchildren, Megan Sanders of Seoul, South Korea; Devin (Hannah) Sanders of Baileyville, Kansas; Alex, Catherine, and John Casey of McCracken, Kansas; and great-grandchildren, Kaleah, Kamden, and Briggs Sanders of Baileyville, Kansas.

Obituary Preview: Mildred “Millie” Ann Bontrager, 86, of Seneca, Kansas passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 1, 2021, at the Life Care Center in Seneca, Kansas with her family by her side.
She was born in Baileyville, Kansas on April 29, 1935, the daughter of Henry and Mary Johanna (Runnebaum) Olberding, Sr.
Millie married Herbie Bontrager in Baileyville, Kansas on February 7, 1956.  Millie and Herbie had four children.  Millie is survived by her children, Connie (Jim) Holthaus, Herb (Ling Zhou) Bontrager, Jr., James (Kim) Bontrager, and Terry (Lovey) Bontrager.  She is also survived by six grandchildren, Katie, Kaylee, Randee, Riley, Charlie, and Helinna; three great-grandchildren, Ella, Jaxson, and Charlee; four step grandchildren, Heidi, Brenda, Matt, and Mike; and seven step great-grandchildren.  Millie also left behind many nieces and nephews who loved and cared for her.
Millie was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Cyril, Henry, Jr., Leonard, Alvin, and Aloysius.; three sisters, Helen Bevans, Frances Boltz, and Marie Stallbaumer; and the father of her children, Herbie Bontrager.
Millie will be remembered for her direct personality and working very hard at her café, where she harassed and enjoyed her time with her customers.  In her later years, she enjoyed her weekly magazines and newspapers, the casino, bingo, lottery tickets, her grandchildren’s activities, her home at Terrace Heights, and time spent with her family just running around town for errands and car rides.
Mom, we loved you dearly and you will always be in our hearts and always by our side.
Mass of Christian Burial will be on Wednesday, July 7, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca, Kansas.  A rosary will be prayed at 10:30 a.m. prior to the service at the church.  A visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 6, 2021 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Popkess Memorial Chapel in Seneca, Kansas.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Coins for a Cause or the Sts. Obituary Preview: Lydia Marie (Ulmer) Heiniger, 99, of Bern died Tuesday, June 15, 2021 at the Crestview Manor in Seneca, Kansas.  Marie moved to Crestview Nursing Home in the spring of 2018 at the young age of 96.
Marie was born on July 19, 1921; the sixth of eight children born to Ernest Ulmer and Rose (Strahm) Ulmer at Bern, Kansas.  She graduated from Bern High School in 1939.
Marie helped on the family farm near Sabetha after high school as well as working jobs for neighbors, holding various jobs at different businesses in Sabetha and working in the kitchen at the Nemaha County Convalescent Home.  On June 6, 1945, she was united in marriage to Wilbur J. Heiniger.  Six children were born to this union.  The couple lived by Sabetha until the early 1950’s when they bought a farm between Bern and Seneca where they raises crops, hogs, chickens, cattle and dairy cattle.  They sold the farm and moved to Bern in 1983.  After moving to Bern to “Retire”, Wilbur and Marie were kept busy helping with M & M’s Grocery store, owned by their son Mark (Mavis) Heiniger, and keeping up with their grandkids.  Marie also worked at the Bern Café off and on over the years and babysat for many in the Bern community.  Marie was an active member of the Friedens United Church of Christ, holding many positions over the years, and a member of the Bern Legion Auxiliary.
Grandma Marie’s house was always open to her grandchildren and great grandchildren.  If she wasn’t inside baking cookies or making homemade applesauce or some other treat, she could be found outside in her garden or tending to her flowers.  In the last few years when she lived in Bern she insisted that tomato plants still be planted in her garden even though she knew she was unable to tend to them.  She loved to play games and had a soft spot for marbles and cards.  She treasured spending time with her family.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wilbur J. Heiniger in February of 1993; a daughter, Katherine Jo “Kath” Heiniger in April of 2015; granddaughter, Stacy Heiniger in June of 1993; daughter in law, Mavis (Streit) Heiniger in April of 2016; her brothers, Amos, Ernest, Raymond and Glen (Bill); sisters, Anna Ulmer, Lucille Moorhead and Emily Stone.
She is survived by her five children, Loren (Carol) Heiniger of Henderson, Nevada; son, Mark Heiniger of Bern, Kansas; daughter, Barb Heiniger of Las Vegas, Nevada; daughter, Susan Shroyer of Topeka, Kansas; and son, Lynn (Angie) Heiniger of Topeka, Kansas; and seven grandchildren, Nicole Ewing, Leslie (Jared) Beer, Laura (Matt) Kmiec, Mallory (Dustin) Ensley, Brendon Shroyer, Lynzie (Rhett) Reynolds, and Lexie Heiniger; and 11 great-grandchildren, Jon Ross Ewing, Stacy Ewing, Kadyn Beer, Gavin Beer, Cooper Kmiec, Lilyana Kmiec, Reagan Ensley, Charlotte Ensley, Roman Ensley, Liam Reynolds and Raelynn Reynolds; two cousins, Erma Jean Wenger and Hal Strahm and many nieces and nephews and friends.
Funeral service will be held Monday, June 21, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at the Friedens United Church of Christ Church in rural Bern, Kansas.  A visitation will be held Sunday, June 20, 2021 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Popkess Memorial Chapel in Seneca, Kansas.  The body will lie in state after 12:00 p.m. on Sunday.  The interment will be made in the Friedens Church Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Ronald McDonald House or the Bern Library sent in care of Popkess Memorial Chapel, 814 Castle, Seneca, Kansas  66538.

Obituary Preview: Robin "Rob" David Ranieri, 66, of Seneca, Kansas, for nearly forty-seven years, beloved father, father-in-law, and grandfather, passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 30, 2021.
He is survived by his sister, Venetia Angel of Hawaii; two brothers, Randy Ranieri of California, and Ramon Ranieri of Montana; his four sons, Jerett Ranieri (Laura) of Seneca, Stefan Ranieri (Alex) of North Carolina, Dylan Ranieri of Manhattan, and Tanner Ranieri (Brittany) of Illinois; and his three grandchildren, Kamryn, Cole, and Nora Ranieri of Seneca.  He is preceded by his father, Larry Ranieri; his mother, Bobby Nelson Ranieri; his brother, Romel Ranieri; and his sister, Vicki Ranieri.
Robin Ranieri was born in San Jose, California on December 10, 1954 and moved to Black Eagle, Montana as a child.  Then, Robin was a high school graduate of Maur Hill - Mount Academy in Atchison, Kansas.  Robin worked a number of jobs including building agricultural silos, at CR industries, painting oil rigs off the coast of Texas, and at Wolfe's Camera Shop in Topeka.  He attended St. Thomas Seminary in Denver, Colorado.  Robin married Janet Olberding on August 6, 1977 in St. Benedict.  They welcomed their first son, Jerett, into the world the following year.
The couple worked as photographers in Northeast Kansas and captured special moments for nearly forty years, and won numerous photography awards in the Tri-State Area while running multiple one-hour photo labs.  He was continuously a hard-worker, and also started the Seneca Main Street Drive-In with his brother, Ramon.  Robin and Janet went on to have three more sons, Stefan, Dylan, and Tanner.
Robin was known as the life of the party, boisterous, and could talk to anyone who would listen.  People always knew he was in attendance at events by his unique laughter.  He was gregarious and friendly to everyone, bringing smiles to all of those around him.  Robin spent his final years as a loving father to his sons, spending time with friends on morning walks, enjoying being a grandfather, and attending sports games of his three grandchildren.

Terry was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by a brother, Maurice Woolsoncroft; several cousins; and his nieces and nephews.

He was a member of the Delaware Baptist Church in Fairview, Kansas and member of the American Legion and VFW Post in Seneca, Kansas.
He was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Mike Malone; two sisters, Cleo Meeker and Ada Landsdale.
He is survived by his daughter, Susanna (Malone) Antolek of Germany; a step-daughter, Jan Darling of Las Vegas, Nevada; two sons; Bill Malone of Chino Valley, Arizona, Patrick Malone of Prescott, Arizona and 9 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

Obituary Preview: Lydia (Skiles) Beck, 93, of Corning, Kansas, passed away on Monday, January 4, 2021, at Eastridge Nursing Facility in Centralia, Kansas surrounded by her family.   She was born on, March 31, 1927, in Trask, Missouri, to Martin L. Skiles and Lucille (Larimer) Skiles.  She attended country schools in the Hurley, Missouri area.  The family followed harvest and lived in various communities over the years.
She married Alex Ruibal in 1946 and they had two sons, John and Larry, and also lost an infant son at birth.  They later divorced.  Lydia and her sons moved to Corning where she worked at the telephone exchange.   She met and married Von Beck in 1956, at the New Eden Church.  Later, they purchased this church, moved it to the farm, and it became their family home.  Lydia and Von had four sons.
Von and Lydia milked cows, bottled and delivered milk and cream, door to door, to local communities.  In addition, Lydia worked at the dress factory in Onaga, Kansas and was head cook at the Centralia Schools in Centralia, Kansas for several years.   Later in life, she worked at the Corning Library and babysat her grandchildren.
Lydia was an accomplished writer and artist.  She wrote many beautiful short stories and poems.  Many of her gorgeous paintings adorn walls in her families’ homes.  She was very proud of the Corning community and loved living there.  She loved watching the neighborhood children play and as her eyesight began to fail, her neighbors made sure that she safely made the trips to the store and bank.  In addition, her neighbors always ensured that her sidewalks were cleared of snow and her lawn mowed and well kept.
Lydia was a member of the United Methodist Church, Corning FCE, and past member of the Library Board and NCTC Board.   She enjoyed playing cards with her Corning buddies at the Corn Crib Café.  After their children were grown, Von and Lydia enjoyed traveling with Roy and Leone Harries.  They traveled to California, Montana, Colorado, the Ozarks, and other various places.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Von; a grandson, Cody; and her five brothers.
Lydia is survived by a sister, Leone Harries, of Topeka; her six sons and five daughter-in-law’s; John and Brenda of Corning, Kansas, Larry and Carol of Topeka, Kanas, Brent and Lizz of Warsaw, Missouri, Wayne of Corning, Kansas, Tim and Jane of Corning, Kansas, and Doug and Amy of Seneca, Kansas; and by her 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday, January 8, 2021, at 10:30 AM at the Corning United Methodist Church with Pastor Brenda Harter officiating.  A viewing will be held at Popkess Memorial Chapel in Seneca, Kansas from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Thursday, January 7, 2021.  Casketbearers are her grandsons; Luke, Matt, Dustin, Dallas, Lane, Nathan, Kurtis and Marcus Beck.  Lane Beck will serve as soloist. Elaine Evelyn White - April 18, 1925 - December 02, 2020

Obituary Preview: Elaine Evelyn (Swanson) White was born on April 18, 1925, in Vilets, Kansas, in the Salem Community to Arvid Conard Swanson & Lydia Cynobia Schuck Swanson.  She passed away December 2, 2020 at Eastridge Nursing Facility in Centralia, Kansas.   She graduated from Vermillion High School in 1943 in Vermillion, Kansas.  After attending Washburn University for a short time, she taught school at Victory School near Vilets.  During the war, she worked at the Supply Depot in Topeka, Kansas making wooden boxes to ship airplane engines.  She married Lawrence Arthur White on March 7, 1945 in Warsaw, Missouri, while he was on leave, by his brother, Walter.
After Lawrence was discharged from the Army, they moved to a farm north of the Vermillion Cemetery where twins, Donna and Dorothy, were born in 1946.  Dorothy did not survive.  Later they moved to another farm on the Axtell road north of Vermillion.  While here Dennis (1950) and Dreda (1955) were born at the Seneca Hospital in Seneca, Kansas.  They moved to Vermillion, buying a home from Herbert Florence, where she resided until 1997.  Also, while here Danny was born (1964) at the Seneca Hospital.  In 1958, they moved to Antelope, Kansas for about six months while Lawrence worked in the oil fields.  In 1970, they moved to Morrill, Kansas for about one and a half years while Lawrence was the city maintenance person and Elaine worked at Duckwalls in Sabetha, Kansas.
Elaine was always a busy person whether she was wallpapering with her friend, Hazel Stowell, or cleaning homes for others during the early years.  In the late 1950’s, she cooked homemade meals with her sister-in-law, Mabel White, at the Vermillion Grade and High School.  In the late 1970’s, she worked at the Marysville Infirmary.  Then, she worked for 17 years at the Frankfort Care Home as a CNA.  She retired, moving to Wamego, Kansas to care for her two youngest granddaughters, Samantha and Cheyenne.  They lived in Abilene, Kansas and Jetmore, Kansas as well.  She moved back to Centralia, Kansas to senior housing in 2006.
During the 1970’s, her neighbor in Vermillion, Hannah Bishop, taught her how to quilt.  Each of her children and grandchildren were recipients of at least one quilt.  She did a lot of hand quilting for others while in Vermillion and Abilene.  She was doing hand embroidery up until she became ill with COVID.
Her greatest enjoyment was getting together and visiting with family and friends.
Elaine was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence; her daughter, Dorothy; a grandson, Justin Smith; her parents, Arvid and Lydia Swanson; her sister, Lillian Vasti; and her three brothers Lloyd, Stanley, and Wesley Swanson.
She is survived by her two daughters, Donna (Charley) Catron and Dreda (Terry) Smith; her two sons, Dennis (Elaine) White and Danny (Debbie) White; her eight grandchildren, Marc Catron, Jonas (Ashley) Smith, Jessica (Shawn) Schneider, Janell (Kerry) Crotinger, Sydney White, Andrew White, Samantha (John) Swank, and Cheyenne White;  her fifteen great-grandchildren, Murphy Catron, Damon, Haley, Taya, Creighton, and Isabella Smith, Daren Schneider, Samantha Jones, Jennifer and Amber Schneider, Meagan and Jocelyn Smith, Lauren and Brecken Crotinger, and Luci White; her two great-great-grandchildren, Jacob and Lindsey Jones; her sister-in-law Jean Swanson; her many nieces and nephews, and her friends.

Obituary Preview: Darleen J. Flentie, age 81, of Topeka, formerly of Centralia, Kansas passed away Sunday morning, August 23, 2020 at Aldersgate Village in Topeka.
Darleen was born June 9, 1939 in Vermillion, Kansas the daughter of Paul and Kelma (Cullimore) Watts.  She married Elton Flentie March 15, 1955 in Topeka.  He preceded her in death March 4, 2005. Elton and Darleen made their home north of Centralia on the family farm, Alfalfa Plains.  Darleen owned and operated Flentie’s Retail Liquor, worked at CR Industries, served as Seneca Golf Course clubhouse manager and worked at the Hayes-Popkess Mortuary in Centralia.  She was a member of the East Centralia Community Church (formerly the Centralia Congregational Church), where she served as a deaconess and taught Sunday School and was on the church board of directors.  She volunteered with Meals on Wheels and served as a Farm Bureau Women’s Leader and was on the State Women’s Committee.  She also was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for over 50 years.
Darleen is survived by a son, Keith W. (Carol) Flentie of Topeka; a daughter, Debra (Ray) Downing of Topeka; a sister Kelma “Tomi” O’Connor of Manhattan, KS; four grandchildren, Dustin (Hannah) Flentie, Shayla (Darren) Rottinhaus, Mark (Julia) Downing and Kristina (Nick) Landkamer and seven great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by a sister, Elda Joy Watts. Obituary Preview: Mary "Ruth” Hoskins, 91, of Seneca, Kansas died Thursday, July 30, 2020 at the Life Care Center in Seneca, Kansas.
Ruth was born on June 24, 1929 in Onaga, Kansas to Raymond and Mary (Matthews) Landreth and grew up in Axtell, Kansas. She met Charles William Hoskins, a teacher at Axtell High School and married him on June 22, 1952. Shortly thereafter, Ruth and Charles moved to Wichita, Kansas where their two children, Kevin and Pamela were born. The family then moved to San Jose, California in 1968. In 1997, ten years after Charles retired from teaching, Ruth and Charles moved back to Kansas taking up residence in Seneca.
Ruth was a lover of maps and geography and was never without an atlas. She and Charles visited all 48 contiguous states during a three month road trip in 1987. She was a talented seamstress, crocheter and knitter. Ruth enjoyed playing the piano and organ at home and at church. She was an avid basketball fan of both college and the NBA. Ruth was a homemaker and sometimes an office assistant in medical offices.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Mary; her husband, Charles; and her brother, Bill Landreth.
Ruth is survived by her son, Kevin Hoskins (Joni); her daughter, Pamela Aguilar (Gregg); her sister, Helen Saville; five grandchildren, five great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
An Inurnment Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 14, 2020 at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Axtell, Kansas.

He was born on March 10, 1945 in Seneca, KS the son of Glenn and Dorothy (Coulter) Jenkins. Earl grew up in Centralia, KS.  Earl was in the United States Navy as a Seabee and served in Vietnam.  Following his service in the Navy, he worked as an engineer for Black & Veatch for over 30 years.
Earl was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, gardening and spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Susan; two sons, Lance (Heather) Jenkins and Bryan (April) Jenkins; two sisters, Marietta (Jerry) Watkins and Peggy Jenkins; and three grandchildren, Nick, Eva and Dylan.

William "Bill" J. Kuhlman - January 13, 1944 - February 26, 2020

Obituary Preview: William "Bill" J. Kuhlman, 76, of Seneca, Kansas passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 26, 2020 at his home.
Bill was born on January 13, 1944 in Kelly, Kansas the son of Louis and Irene (Vock) Kuhlman. He attended Kelly Schools until 8th grade. He worked on the farm with his dad, and was a janitor at the Kelly Schools. Bill went on to work for a number of local grain elevators and then went to work for Nemaha County in the maintenance department.
Bill was united in marriage to Darlene Shump on September 3, 1966 at the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. To this union three children were born.
Bill was most proud of raising and selling registered Angus bulls. He also owned and operated Old West Feeds with his wife. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, and collecting sports trading cards. Bill was a lifetime member of St. Bede’s Catholic Church in Kelly. In 2009, Bill and Darlene sold their farm and moved to Seneca.
Bill was a caring and giving person; he continued that in death through the gift of body donation for science.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Marvin Kuhlman.
Bill is survived by his wife, Darlene of the home; his two sons, Tim (Diane) Kuhlman of Seneca, KS and Rick Kuhlman (Luciana Hooper) of Olathe, KS; his daughter, Sherri Routh of Fort Worth, TX; his brother, John (Edna) Kuhlman of Tecumseh, KS; seven grandchildren, Tad Kuhlman, Zach Kuhlman, Katie Kuhlman, Josh Kuhlman, Madelynne Routh, Gabriella Routh and Emma Kuhlman.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 4, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Bede’s Catholic Church in Kelly, Kansas. A rosary will be recited at 10:30 a.m. prior to service time at the church. Inurnment will be made in the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church Cemetery in Seneca. Obituary Preview: Leila June (Reed) Nutter, 72, of Seneca, Kansas, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Saturday, December 28, 2019 at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital.
Leila was born to the late Irvin Reed and June (Anderson) Reed on September 14, 1947 in Holton.  She graduated from Soldier High School and from Clark’s School of Business in Topeka.  She married Lloyd Nutter on February 14, 1969 in Soldier, Kansas.  Lloyd and Leila raised their two daughters in Seneca.  She worked as a type setter for the Courier Tribune for 43 years.  Leila was an avid reader and was a huge supporter of the Seneca Free Library where she served on the Library Board and attended their book clubs.  She was also a member of the Seneca United Methodist Church.  Leila was well-liked in the Seneca community and will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother as well as a loyal friend.  She cherished her family and looked forward to spending time with them.  She also enjoyed getting together with her friends for tea and sitting on her porch swing to visit and read books.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her sister-in-law, Cathleen Reed.
Leila is survived by her husband; two daughters, Tracee (Quentin) Davis of Oskaloosa, and Darcee (Mel) Zehm of Hammond, Wisconsin; and five grandchildren, Annika, Luke, Caleb, Jack, and Jacob.  She is also survived by two brothers, Dale Reed of Soldier, and Jerry (Nina) Reed of Soldier as well as her nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be Tuesday, December 31, 2019 at 1:00 pm at the Popkess Memorial Chapel in Seneca, Kansas.  Visitation will be Monday, December 30, 2019 from 5:30 to 7:00 pm at the Popkess Memorial Chapel.  The interment will be made in the Soldier Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Seneca Public Library or Nemaha Valley Community Hospital, sent in care of Popkess Memorial Chapel, 814 Castle St., Seneca, Kansas 66538.

Ralph Edward Mars - August 19, 1933 - November 25, 2019

Obituary Preview: Ralph Mars of Vermillion, KS passed away November 25, 2019 at 86 years old, at the Good Samaritan Home in Olathe, KS due to advanced stages of sepsis, resulting in renal failure. Ralph was born August 19, 1933 in the Neuchatel Township. He lived on his family farm, previously located east of B Road and 32 Road, in Nemaha County. He attended the Concord Grade School House, completing an 8th grade graduation, and later earning his GED. He attended the Manhattan Technical College for Welding. He served in the US Army, as a Private 1A class, serving from 1954 to 1956 in the 5th Armored Division, Company A, 46th Armored Infantry Battalion, SIGC Unit, stationed in Germany. He received 3 medals in service for Good Conduct, National Defense Service, and Army Occupation of World War II. His job in the Army was as a Wireman Communication/Telephone Operator, calling in ordinance for tanks. While in the army he went to Rome and was blessed by Pope Leo. Ralph was a member of the Frankfort, KS American Legion Post #181. After the Army, Ralph worked for 12 years with the Union Pacific Railroad as a Communication Lineman running telephone line. This work took him throughout Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Montana, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, and Wyoming. This is where he met is former wife, Barbara Selena Cook to whom he was married from 1960 to 1973. To this union was born two children, Stanley (1961) and Synthia (1962). Ralph worked in custom hire to cut, bail hay, and combining crops. He began farming full-time in 1968 raising cattle and hogs, as well as growing milo, oats, wheat, and hay. He had had once owned up to three properties in Nemaha and Pottawatomie Counties. Ralph moved to Vermillion in 1974, residing there for 41 years until August of 2014 when he suffered a massive stroke, which paralyzed his left side. After a three month stay at the Topeka VA Medical Center, he was moved to a nursing home in Olathe, to be close to his daughter. Ralph said that fishing on the Blue River was his favorite pastime. In the 1960’s, he often enjoyed fishing with cousin Richard “Dick” Mars, sister Lucille, cousin Darlene (Mars) Costa, and his own family. He would bird hunt with Cotton Florence, Wayne Chadwick and Dick. His favorite pets were a palomino horse he named Goldenrod, and a border collie named Keene. Ralph was fond of cars. Some of the more unique cars he owned was a 1931 Model-A car, a light blue 1957 Chevy Belair, a light yellow 1965 Ford fastback Mustang, and a starlight-black 1979 Pontiac Trans-Am. His personal activities since childhood also included hunting, and trapping. Later he enjoyed dancing, listening to music, metal detecting, natural treasure hunting, genealogy, and bow-fishing. He was known by many as good-natured, fun-loving, having a sense of humor, loved hearing and telling jokes, making up jokes, and playing pranks. Laughter was his medicine for himself and his gift to others. The nursing home staff loved him dearly for his personality, jokes, and teasing. His relationship with his children changed over the years, from strict parent to calm counselor, to friend and an encourager. He was proud of them and all that they had accomplished on their own in life. He stayed in touch with them, and always asked about his grandchildren, and was connected to each of them. He was able to give his love and blessing to his family before his passing, telling us to “follow your bliss” in life, and “be patient in striving for success.” At the time of his passing his daughter was with him, and had just sang him “O Holy Night” after which he opened his eyes one last time, looked at her and passed knowing he was loved.
Ralph was of French and German decent, and was preceded in death by parents, Bernice (Surdez) and Roland E. Mars; his grandparents, Oscar and Mattie (Morrison) Surdez, and George and Minnie (Linderman) Mars; his sister, Lucille (Mars) Chadwick; his brother-in-law’s, Wayne Chadwick and Cotton Florence. A beloved father, he leaves behind family: Stanley (Tiffany) Mars of Estes Park, CO, and Synthia (Kenny) Wilson of Olathe, KS; grandchildren, Kandace (Mars) Dane of Wamego, Ricky Gant and Tammy Corum both of Topeka, Julie Kolterman of Centralia, CJ Barleen and Cade Barleen of Colorado, and Selena “Len” Wilson and Clayton Wilson of Olathe; and his younger sister, Florence of Onaga.
Funeral service will be Friday, December 6, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at the Centralia Community Church East in Centralia, Kansas. Dinner to follow services at 5:00 p.m. in the church basement for friends and family. Visitation will be Thursday, December 5, 2019 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Popkess Memorial Chapel in Seneca. Interment will be made in the Neuchatel Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Frankfort American Legion Post #181. Memorial contributions may be sent in care of, Synthia Wilson, 1524 E. He was born June 20, 1948 in Kansas City, KS to Darwin N. and Dortha Hester (Winn) Copeland.  He grew up in Shawnee, KS and graduated Shawnee Mission North.  Jim attended the University of Kansas where he met Kathy Ann Sheehan and married her on February 17, 1968 in Overland Park, KS.  They were blessed with a son and a daughter.
From 1969 to 1972 Jim served in the U.S. Army and fought bravely in the Vietnam War. When he returned home he became a computer programmer for the Social Security Administration in Kansas City.
As their children were growing up Jim was a very involved father, he was a Scout Master and Little League Baseball Coach.  He had a love for music, his dogs, camping vacations, hunting for treasures at auctions, meeting friends at the local coffeehaus every morning and spending time with his grandkids whom he was always so very proud of.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents.  He leaves his wife, Kathy, of 51 years; two kids, his son, Jamie Copeland and his wife Danielle of McLouth, KS, and his daughter, Cindy McWilliams and her husband Galen of Seneca; his brother, Steve Copeland of Independence, MO; and 7 grandchildren.
Jim died a loved man surrounded by his family.  We knew our Dad always a man of integrity and honesty.  He will be missed so much.
There will be a Celebration of Life on Saturday, July 27, 2019 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Popkess Memorial Chapel in Seneca, KS.  The Copeland family invites friends and family to join them to share their favorite memories of Jim.  Memorial contributions may be sent in care of Popkess Memorial Chapel, 814 Castle St., Seneca, KS  66538.

He is survived by his beloved children, Jason Anderson of Cambria, NY, Brandi Walek of Cambria, NY, Jeremiah Strotkamp of Bryan, TX, Kalista Strotkamp of Bryan, TX, and Kaylee Hall of Emporia, KS; two younger brothers, Donald Strotkamp and Johney Strotkamp, both of Centralia. Gary is also grandfather to 19 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

Obituary Preview: Leona Eileen (Boeding) Olberding, 83, of Seneca, Kansas passed away on Friday, May 24, 2019 at Life Care Center of Seneca.
Leona was born east of Kelly, KS on December 13th, 1935 to Herman and Anna (Haverkamp) Boeding. Leona graduated 8th grade from St. Bede’s Catholic School. After her school years, she worked the family farm and helped women in the area during the time of their pregnancies.  Leona also worked in Kansas City at various ice cream and candy shops during her early adult years.
On December 31, 1953 she married Robert Olberding at St. Bede’s Catholic Church in Kelly, Kansas.  When Robert entered the army, they were stationed at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas and then in Fort Lewis, Washington. They enjoyed the army life and made many lifetime friends in which they traveled across the US to visit the rest of their lives. In 1956, they returned to Seneca and for several years ran the Sun Vita Seed test farm east of town.  In 1962 they settled down and purchased a farm south of Corning. Together they ran a Grade A dairy farm and raised their 12 children.  After her children were raised, Leona worked at the Golden Eagle Casino and Seneca Court House where she helped in the processing of documents into microfilms.
In 1995 Robert and Leona purchased the original Olberding homestead west of Seneca where they retired.
Leona was active in the St. Ann’s and St. Patrick’s Altar society, and a member of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary where she was a past president. She was an avid gardener, impeccable card player, determined bowler, and the greatest maker of coconut cream pies. She enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren play sports.  Besides her family she was most proud of the GED she earned in 1976 and the number of lives she helped save with her donations of blood.
Leona is survived by her husband Robert and by her 12 children, Duane (Kim) Olberding of Kansas City, Janet (Neil) Conley of Wichita, Barbara (Gerald) Feldkamp of Centralia, Joan (Dan) Rickel of Topeka, James (Jean) Olberding of Seneca, Donna (Kenneth) Wege of Hoyt, Michael (Sara) Olberding of Abilene, Cheryl Broxterman of Hoyt, Colette (Cy) Wallisch of Effingham, Kevin (Valerie) Olberding of Circleville, Angela (Shawn) Wise of El Dorado, and Brian (Mindy) Olberding of Corning. As well she is survived by 43 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and 3 more great-grandchildren on the way.
Leona was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Father Damian, Wilbert, Lawrence, and Francis; her sisters, Mary Kremer, Rita Brownsberger, Edna Steinlage, and Rosalia Fangman; grandsons, Ryan Olberding and Shane Olberding; a granddaughter, Mary Love; and a great- granddaughter, Hannah Love.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be on Wednesday, May 29, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at the Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. Rosaries will be prayed on Tuesday, May 28, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. at the St. Bede’s Catholic Church in Kelly. Interment will be made in the Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital, sent in care of Popkess Memorial Chapel, 814 Castle Street, Seneca, KS 66538.
