During a brief furlough from the airlines, he earned his Masters in Public Administration and taught elementary and middle school. Dick enjoyed a 30 year career with United, flying over 18,000 commercial hours before retiring as a Captain in 2000 after being diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL).
