Eugenia had the following wishes for expressions of sympathy in her name; Smile with a child. Take a child or friend for a walk in the woods. Take the time to see the beauty in a flower, and in its seeds. Listen to the messages that birds relay in their songs. Do a good deed. Go outdoors and lie on the ground and look up at the sky. Watch the clouds and imagine the faces they show. Catch some big snowflakes. Study the silver threads that make a flower in a milkweed pod. Walk along a stream and listen to the sounds of life it makes. Welcome spring by looking for wildflowers, and listening to birdsongs. On a bright starry night, go out and watch the stars. Paint a ceiling in a child’s room blue, and paint silver stars all over it. Sing a song to a child, and to your loved one. Teach children to love themselves and the earth. Climb a mountain to the top and look at alpine wildflowers, then lie down and look at the clouds. Do all of these things with someone you love.

Obituary Preview: Antonina Rotko, 94, of Auburn, went to meet the Lord Jesus Christ, whom she loved with all her heart on Friday, March, 1st at Auburn Community Hospital, following a brief illness.
Antonina was born in 1930 in Pankna, Poland, the youngest of four siblings to the late Theodore and Anna Hlywa Rusinko. In 1959 she married Stefan Rotko, and they had one son, Roman Rotko.
She went on to have a life that was worthy of a novel. Talking with her was as if you were taken back to the 1930’s, 40’s 50’s and so on. She had a memory that to her last days remembered detail after detail. In Europe she went from living the poorest and simplest of lives to hellish times that one can only imagine. Her family lived in a home that often hid people from Nazi and Communist soldiers.
One of her most terrifying events was when her family was forcefully removed to be resettled, and she was left to be resettled in a different part of Poland separated from her family and having only a few hours to take what she valued, which included a piglet. Eventually she was reunited with her sister and mother.
She came to the United States in 1962 with her husband and son and lived with family in Yonkers, NY, and came to Auburn in 1967, joining the Ukrainian community.
She worked as a housekeeper, as a seamstress at Custom Cleaners, and retired from Auburn Memorial Hospital.
At home she enjoyed cooking for family and who ever needed, and she enjoyed gardening until the age of 90, sometimes being in the garden until midnight. She loved visiting and a good conversation, and was comforted in her last days with discussions with close friends. She led a life of prayer.
Mrs. Rotko was a communicant and active member of SS Peter & Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, and was a member of the Sacred Heart Society at the church.
She is survived by her son Roman Rotko and his wife Lisa, four grandchildren; Justin(Katie) Miccuci of California, Andrew (Danielle) Annie (Alex) and Kathryn Rotko all of Auburn, four great grandchildren; Charlie, Liam, Luca and Logan with one on the way, several nieces and nephews, and close friends Julie Lupo, Anne Kott, Olga Brazee and Nikola Pinchak. She was predeceased by her husband Stefan in 2013.

Dennis J. McCarthy - October 16, 1952 - January 02, 2024

Departed: 01/02/2024 (Auburn)
Obituary Preview: Dennis J. McCarthy, 71 years old, a lifelong resident of Auburn, passed away unexpectedly on January 2, 2024. He was the younger son of Jeremiah and Carmel Terranova McCarthy.
To know Dennis was to love him, with his quick wit, creativity, intelligence and quirky charm, but mostly for his devotion and care for those he loved, especially his beloved wife Mary Ann Ruta McCarthy. They had their first date on New Year’s Eve, 1990. They were married on October 23, 1993, recently celebrating their 30th anniversary.
Mary Ann and Dennis shared their lives over the years with “cat children”, Buzzy, Baby, Bobby, Bonnie and Buster. Thankfully, eight year old Buster is still here to offer his comfort and companionship to Mary Ann.
Dennis was a 1970 graduate of Auburn East High School, and a 1974 graduate of Syracuse University, with Bachelor’s Degrees in both Journalism and Sociology. Throughout many of his working years, Dennis was a private investigator for a variety of agencies. However, the profession close to, and in his heart and soul was that of a writer. In the 1980’s, Dennis was asked to write for the then Merry-Go-Round-Youth theater. His production of “Alice in Wonderland” toured throughout New York State for many years and remains one of the Youth Theater’s most successful runs.
Dennis often collaborated with his longtime close friend, Rick Balian. Together they wrote many comedy shows that were performed in Auburn and New York City. One of their shows, “Temporary Lucidity” was performed in Scotland at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. It set record attendance and received wonderful reviews. A short film they co-wrote “Nine the Hard Way” won a Best of Fest Award at a Rochester International Film Festival. Dennis and Rick also teamed up to do a weekly radio show, “Arby Dempsey’s Obvious Radio Theater”, which ran on PBS station WRVO.
In 2018 Dennis published his first novel titled “Khurxoc”. At the time of his death he was well along with working on another novel. No title was ever revealed, as true to his fun loving nature, he kept that his very own secret. He considered it bad luck to give a title name away before it was time.
Besides the love of his life, Mary Ann, Dennis is survived by his brother, Jeremiah McCarthy of Harrisonburg, VA, his maternal aunt Lucy Webster of Bethany, PA, sisters-in-law Judy Ruta of Liverpool, NY and Kathleen (Irena) Arpino of Syracuse, NY, along with several cousins, giving a special recognition of and friendship with cousin Lorie (Robert) Nightingale of Auburn.
Contributions in memory of Dennis may be made to Finger Lakes SPCA of CNY, 41 York St., Auburn, 13021 or REV Theater Company, 282 North St., Suite B, Auburn 13021.
“The loss of Dennis has left many hearts heavy. He will be forever sadly missed by those who knew and loved him. Services to honor his life will be held at a later date to be announced. Arrangements are by the Plis Funeral Home, 220 State St., Auburn, 13021
