Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They help to notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a sense of closure.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend of the deceased writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with the writing process. The author should have a good understanding of the person's life, personality, and accomplishments to create a fitting tribute.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, charitable donations in lieu of flowers, and any other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise yet meaningful, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Online obituaries often have more flexibility in terms of length and content.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging for readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and deadlines. You may need to provide the written obituary, along with any photos or other materials, via email or online portal.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise that allows you to reflect on your life and legacy. However, it's essential to keep in mind that the final version may need to be edited or revised by others after your passing.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, location, and length of the notice. Online platforms may offer free or low-cost options, while traditional newspapers may charge by the word or line.

What is an online obituary?

An online obituary is a digital version of a traditional printed obituary. It's typically hosted on a website or social media platform and can include additional features such as guestbooks, photo galleries, and donation links.

How long do online obituaries stay online?

The duration that an online obituary remains available varies depending on the platform or website. Some sites may keep them archived indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period (e.g., 30 days).

Can I edit an online obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, yes. Online platforms usually allow you to make changes or updates to an obituary after it's been published. However, it's essential to check with the specific platform or website for their editing policies.

What is a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement that informs readers of someone's passing. It typically includes only basic information such as the person's name, age, date of death, and funeral details. Death notices are often used when a full obituary is not feasible or desired.

What is the difference between an obituary and a eulogy?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death and provides biographical information about the deceased. A eulogy is a spoken tribute delivered during a funeral or memorial service to celebrate the person's life and legacy.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary should reflect the personality and spirit of the deceased. Including humorous anecdotes or quotes can help capture their essence and make the tribute more engaging and relatable.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive topics or issues related to the deceased's life (e.g., cause of death), it's essential to approach them with tact and discretion. Consider consulting with family members or close friends to ensure that you're handling sensitive information appropriately.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary?
