Rodney Walker Hall - April 22, 1950 - March 24, 2021

Departed: 03/24/2021 (Samson)
Obituary Preview: Rodney Walker Hall – HACODA, AL April 22, 1950 – March 24, 2021
The man. The myth. The legend.
Rodney Walker “Rod” Hall departed this life for the next on March 24, 2021 with his two children, Kimberly and Derek Hall by his side.  Rod loved deep fried Southern food, mayo on his sweet peas, tooling around on the farm, candy bars, cheap beer, and beautiful women. Not necessarily in that order. He hated cucumbers and lazy people. Not necessarily in that order.
Rod was a jack of all trades and a master of none.  He retired from the Chevron Refinery in Pascagoula, Mississippi and went back to his farming roots when he moved from Mobile back to Hacoda.  Rod could build ANYTHING and was also great at growing things, especially vegetables, wrecking vehicles, giving his kids heart attacks, and making sure his neighbors were always taken care of.  He was a pro at collecting “stuff” and was often referred to as “Mr. Haney” by his children because if you wanted something and he did not already have it, he could find you one of anything that your heart desired.  And he would be happy to do it at a “small” cost.
Rod loved to tell stories. And you could be sure 50% of every story was true. You just never knew which 50%. Roy Rogers and Clint Eastwood were his television heroes. And he was the hero for his two children and many of his friends and loved ones.
When Rod took off for that family reunion in the sky, he was greeted there by his parents, Ned and Dana Lou Simmons Hall, his favorite grandmother, Clarice Simmons Webb, and a myriad of other relatives, friends and loved ones.  Rod leaves behind his daughter, Kimberly C. Hall of Mobile, Alabama, his son, Derek W. Hall of Chunchula, Alabama, three beautiful grandchildren, Victorija Hall-Smith, Liam Smith, Brinkley Hall and his younger brother, Thomas Hall.
A memorial service for Rod will be held Saturday, May 8, 2021 at 11:00 am at Pittman Funeral Home in Samson, Alabama with Rev. Dewey Elmore, officiating.  A community potluck in his honor will follow at the Hacoda Community Center.
Everyone that knew Rod knows that he loved to talk and to eat.  As a tribute to his life, we hope you will all come share some food and some fond memories of Rod with his family and friends.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It serves as a way to share information about the deceased with friends, family, and community members.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries play a significant role in honoring the life of the deceased, providing closure for loved ones, and serving as a historical record of the person's life. They also help to notify others of the passing and provide details about funeral services and memorial arrangements.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend writes an obituary, but it can also be written by a funeral home or a professional obituary writer. The writer should have personal knowledge of the deceased and be able to capture their personality, accomplishments, and spirit.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary usually includes the deceased's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include a photo, quotes, or anecdotes that celebrate their life.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the family's preferences. Typically, it ranges from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be published online or in a memorial booklet.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Humor can be a wonderful way to celebrate the deceased's personality and spirit. A well-placed anecdote or witty remark can make the obituary more engaging and memorable.

Should I include all of the deceased's relatives in the obituary?

No, it's not necessary to list every single relative. Focus on immediate family members, such as spouse, children, grandchildren, parents, and siblings. You can also mention close friends or caregivers who played a significant role in the deceased's life.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes! Photos can add a personal touch to the obituary and help readers connect with the deceased. Choose a clear, recent photo that captures their personality or spirit.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

Contact the newspaper or online platform directly to learn about their submission guidelines and deadlines. Be prepared to provide the written obituary, along with any photos or additional materials they may require.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost varies depending on the publication and the length of the obituary. Some newspapers offer free or low-cost options for basic listings, while longer or more detailed obituaries may incur higher fees. Online platforms may offer free or paid options as well.

Can I write an obituary before someone passes away?

Yes, it's possible to write an obituary in advance. This can be especially helpful for individuals who want to have control over how their life is celebrated or for families who want to prepare for an impending loss.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If the deceased had a sensitive or private aspect to their life, it's essential to approach this information with care. Consider consulting with family members or close friends to determine what details should be shared publicly.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial requests in an obituary?

Absolutely! Including information about charitable donations or memorial requests can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased and support a cause they cared about.

How long after someone passes away should I wait before publishing an obituary?

The timing depends on individual circumstances and cultural traditions. Typically, an obituary is published within a few days to a week after the person's passing.

Can I write an obituary for someone who has been deceased for many years?

Yes! Writing an obituary for someone who passed away years ago can still serve as a meaningful tribute to their life and legacy.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary?

If you're having trouble writing an obituary, consider seeking help from a professional writer or asking a friend or family member for assistance. You can also find online resources and templates to guide you through the process.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes or lyrics that resonate with the deceased's personality or spirit can add depth and meaning to the obituary.

How do I ensure accuracy when writing an obituary?

Can I write multiple versions of an obituary for different publications?

Yes! You may want to create different versions of the obituary tailored to specific publications or audiences. For example, you might write a shorter version for a local newspaper and a longer version for an online memorial page.

What if I need to make corrections to an already-published obituary?

Contact the publication immediately if you need to make corrections. They will work with you to correct the errors and republish the revised obituary.

How do I preserve an obituary for future generations?

You can save physical copies of printed newspapers or create digital archives of online obituaries. You can also consider creating a scrapbook or memory book that includes the obituary along with other mementos and memorabilia.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?

Absolutely! Social media platforms can be a powerful tool for sharing news of a loved one's passing and celebrating their life. You can share links to online obituaries or create your own posts with photos and memories.

What if I'm unsure about what to include in an obituary?

Talk to family members, friends, or a funeral director for guidance. They can help you determine what details are most important to include and how best to celebrate the deceased's life.

Can I include personal anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Personal anecdotes can bring warmth and humanity to the obituary, making it more engaging and memorable.

How do I balance brevity with detail in an obituary?

Focusing on key events, achievements, and personality traits can help you strike a balance between brevity and detail. Remember, the goal is to give readers a sense of who the person was and what they meant to others.
