It's usually published in a newspaper, online, or in a funeral home's website to inform friends, family, and acquaintances of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing essential information for those who want to pay their respects. They help notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and often include information about the person's life, achievements, and legacy.

Who writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family members or close friends of the deceased. However, some funeral homes or newspapers may offer assistance in writing the obituary. In some cases, a professional obituary writer may be hired to craft the notice.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies, interests, and surviving family members. It may also mention any notable achievements, awards, or accomplishments.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or website it will be published in. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be suitable for online publications or personal websites.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the notice and make it more engaging. Check with the publication or website for their specific guidelines on photo submissions.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process. They may have specific requirements for formatting, word count, and deadlines. Be prepared to provide all necessary information and proofread carefully before submitting.

Can I write my own obituary?

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, location, and length of the notice. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $1,000 or more for a traditional newspaper publication. Online platforms may offer free or low-cost options.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's difficult to make changes to an obituary once it's been published in print. However, online platforms may allow for corrections or updates. Check with the publication or website for their policies on revisions.

What if I need to correct an error in an obituary?

If you notice an error in an already-published obituary, contact the publication or website immediately. They may be able to issue a correction or reprint the revised notice.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

What if I'm unsure about what to include in an obituary?

If you're struggling to decide what information to include in an obituary, consider consulting with family members, friends, or a funeral director for guidance. They can help you determine what details are most important to share.

Can I include charitable donations information in an obituary?

Yes, many people choose to include information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers in their loved one's memory. This can be a meaningful way to honor their legacy and support a cause they cared about.

How do I find old obituaries?

Absolutely! Humor can be a wonderful way to celebrate someone's personality and make their obituary more engaging. Just be sure to use good taste and avoid offending anyone who might read it.

What if I'm not comfortable writing an obituary myself?

If you're feeling overwhelmed or unsure about writing an obituary, consider enlisting the help of a friend or family member who knew the deceased well. Alternatively, many funeral homes offer assistance with writing and publishing obituaries.
