Helen I. Hines - August 15, 1931 - November 21, 2023

Departed: 11/21/2023 (Erie)
Obituary Preview: Helen I. Hines, 92, of Erie, joined her heavenly father at 10:18 p.m., Tuesday, November 21, 2023 at the Oswego Health and Rehab Center in Oswego.
She was born August 15, 1931, in Ottawa, Kansas to Rev. J. Martin Torrence and Grace M. (Smith) Torrence. Her father was a Methodist minister and the family lived in several towns where he pastored before moving to Erie during her high school years. She graduated from Erie High School and attended Baker University for a time.
Helen later recalled that she did not initially plan to make Erie her home, saying at the time that she did not intend to live in a small town and would never marry a farmer. Her mind was changed when she fell in love with her future husband, Jack L. Hines, a farmer and lifelong Erie resident. They married on June 26, 1955 in a double wedding with lifelong friends Louis and Lloydeen (Locke) Hines at the Federated Church in Erie. The officiating pastor was Helen’s father, Rev. Torrence.
Helen considered attending college after graduating from high school but found that mid-20th century society discouraged women from pursuing degrees in her area of interest, which was mathematics. She instead decided to become a bookkeeper, and later manager, of Neosho County Creamery, (Mid-America Dairymen) where she worked 47 years. She took great pride in her work and was well liked by both her coworkers and the dairymen she served.
Helen enjoyed a very active retirement. She graduated with honors from Pittsburg State University with a business degree shortly after retiring, some 40 years after graduating from high school. She was treasurer of the Federated Church for many years and was an active member of the Pittsburg State University Alumni Association and served as a member of the board of directors of the Labette Health Foundation. She also was active in the Labette Health Auxiliary as a “pink lady” where she carefully inventoried and distributed medications.
Helen and Jack enjoyed traveling during their retirement years. Some of their memorable experiences included riding a hover boat over the English Channel, climbing the walls of an Aztec Temple, kissing the Blarney Stone in Ireland and visiting Glacier National Park.
Helen lived a life full of the best type of contradictions. She was very independent but was quick to give of her own resources to those in need. She held herself to an extremely high moral standard, but was quick to forgive the failings of others. She did not have any biological children, but she cared for and loved those of others as if they were her own. Helen left this world much better than she found it. She will be dearly missed by her friends and family.
Her husband, Jack, preceded her in death on January 21, 2022. She was also preceded by her sister, Mary Ann Torrence and nieces Becky Hunn, Brenda Herrin and nephew Steven Masquelier. Surviving are several family members including Betty Mackesty (Mike) of Gravois Mills, MO, Lori Jensen (Marty) of Erie, Connie Angleton (Jeff Holcom) of Erie, Jeannie Chard of Chanute, Lynn Hines (Carol) of Chanute and Leland Hines (Ti) of Erie and their families.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, November 28, at the Federated Church in Erie with Rev. Shella Choi officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery. Friends may call at the Pierce-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Erie on Monday until 8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Federated Church. They may be left at or sent to the funeral home at P. O. Box 182, Erie, KS 66733. Online messages may be left at www.wallfuneralservices.com.

John E Craig - April 13, 1935 - September 11, 2023

Departed: 09/11/2023 (Erie)
Obituary Preview: John E. Craig, 88, arrived in this world on April 13, 1935, and passed on September 11, 2023, after a difficult struggle with Parkinson's Disease and other medical complications. Hard-work, frugal living and the ability to think critically through difficult problems were calling cards of this good man. He and his soul mate, Sandra Ann (Campbell) Craig, shared almost 64 years of a loving marriage together. He is survived by Sandra and by his two sons and their spouses, Marcus and Anna Craig, Neil and Chancee Craig; by four grandchildren including Jessica and her husband Josh Blakely, Michael Craig, Elizabeth Craig, and Jacqueline Craig; and by his great-grandson Wyatt Blakely. He is preceded in death by his parents Ernest Craig and Anita Craig, and by his sister Louise.
As a depression-era child, John grew up in Erie, Kansas, and was the younger of two children. His father served as game warden, carpenter and as sheriff for the Erie township, and these jobs created lasting memories and values for young John. His loving mother retired as the city clerk in Erie. She was a longstanding volunteer at the Federated Church. While he was raised to be frugal and to be diligent in his work, John had a strong sense of adventure and seized life with both hands. As a youth, the odds were good that his free time would be spent either hunting or fishing. He always preferred to be working outdoors, rather than indoors, when given the opportunity.
After graduating from Erie High School, John joined the Army and was stationed in Germany. Upon his return to the States and with the help of the GI bill, he went to school at Kansas State University and graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. While in college, he began dating Sandra Ann Campbell from Stark, Kansas and traveled the bi-ways and highways of Kansas visiting her while she attended college at Pittsburg State University, worked summers in Kansas City, and eventually began teaching in Topeka, Kansas. On November 26, 1959, John and Sandra were married in Erie and a new set of adventures began.
The aerospace and oil industry took John and Sandra to several locations, including Fairborn Ohio, El Dorado, Kansas, Great Bend, Kansas and Richardson, Texas. In 1960 Marcus was born in Xenia Ohio and in 1963 Neil was born in Great Bend, Kansas. Southeast Kansas was truly in his heart and was always tugging on him. City life just wasn’t for him. The young family settled in Independence, Kansas in 1974 and John and Sandra were to live happily in this community for over 48 years. He retired from Arco in 1992, and he and Sandra began yet another set of adventures.
John's garden was a marvel, his woodworking was beautiful, and his big heart loved volunteering. He was a long-time and active member of First United Methodist Church, offering his woodworking love repairing and creating needed infrastructure. He spent many, many hours maintaining Kiddyland at the zoo in his work with the Lions organization. He and Sandra often traveled to be with their children and grandchildren at locales around the country. He was so proud of his family and demonstrated that love in many, many ways. His absolute favorite family vacation? The K-State football bowl games of course! The family went to many bowl games through the years. Buddy appropriately became his grandpa's name and John was thereafter known within the family as Buddy Craig. As a father he tended to be quiet and austere and was much loved by his sons; as a grandfather he was lively and kind and adored by his grandchildren.
John was a good listener and dispensed his vast wisdom carefully. “You just can’t learn about someone if you’re doing all the talking” he would say. John lived his life with dignity and delight, taking in the joys of work and family, church and community. He will be sorely missed.

Obituary Preview: Leland Leon Yarnell, 81, rural Erie, died at 11:02 a.m., Monday, July 31, 2023 at the Prairie Mission Retirement Village in St. Paul.
He was born June 17, 1942, in the Neosho River bottom west of Erie, to Leon Perry and Roberta Ann (Basler) Yarnell. When only three days old he and his mother were brought out by horse and wagon during a flood. Flooding of the Neosho would be an event he would endure many times throughout his life as a farmer in the river bottom.
Leland lived and grew up west of Erie, attending country schools Urbana, Doan-Dode and finally Erie Junior High. He entered the new high school building in 1954 and graduated from Erie High School in 1960.
He worked at the Neosho Valley Creamery through August of 1962 and married his high school sweetheart, Sharon Louise Young, on August 25, 1962 at the First Baptist Church in Erie.
With the exception of the years 1962-1966 he lived his entire life in the Neosho County, Erie area. During those four years he worked as a ranch hand on the Bundy Brothers eight hundred acre ranch, two miles south of Walnut. Leland was a former member of the Temple Baptist Church. He was an avid hunter and sports enthusiast. He coached little league baseball, ran the chains at football games and attended most all sports events of Erie High. He played men’s slow pitch softball until he was 54 and continued playing sports as a senior golfer. Camping and fishing along the Neosho River was a frequent family event. One of the highlights was a five day camping trip where over six hundred pounds of fish were caught. In recent years he and Sharon enjoyed fishing at Wolf Creek Lake, John Redmond Reservoir, Fall River and various area lakes. He loved traveling with Sharon on her Young-Ermey Family research trips to the eastern part of the country, which included wading in the Atlantic Ocean at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Patrick A. "Pat" Johnson - June 12, 1945 - July 17, 2023

Departed: 07/17/2023 (Erie)
Obituary Preview: On Monday, July 17, 2023, at the home of his son Todd Johnson in Lenexa, we said goodbye to a remarkable man, Patrick A. "Pat" Johnson. A dedicated farmer and stockman, Pat, 78, was born on June 12, 1945, in Chanute, Kansas, to Wayne and Virginia (Slater) Johnson. His journey through life was filled with love, hard work, and a passion for his family, friends, and the community he called home.
Growing up on the family farm, Pat cherished the rural life from an early age. He attended Erie schools and graduated from Erie High School in 1963. Continuing his education, Pat joined the Sigma Chi fraternity while studying Agricultural Economics at Kansas State University, earning his bachelor's degree in 1968.
Returning to rural Erie, Pat embraced the family farming legacy and worked evenings at his father's gas station, 59 Truck Stop. But his ambitions knew no bounds, and he ventured into many diverse agricultural endeavors. Over the years, Pat expanded his farming operation, acquiring more land and leases. Not content with just growing crops and raising cattle, he became a sales representative for Pioneer Seed as well as a certified crop consultant. He also owned a grain elevator, and even ventured into the crop dusting business.
When the 1980s brought challenging times for farming, Pat's forward-thinking approach led him to add specialty crops like flowers, pumpkins, Indian corn, and sorghum to his operation. He proudly supplied sorghum and fall decorations to Silver Dollar City and Shepherd of The Hills in Branson.
Yet, even amidst his busy career, Pat always made time for the outdoors. An avid hunter and fisherman, he particularly loved deer hunting and ventured on several thrilling Elk hunts in Colorado. Pat's commitment to his community was evident in his roles as a board member of the Heartland Rural Electric Cooperative and Rural Water Board No. 3.
Above all, Pat cherished his family. On August 1, 1965, he married the love of his life, Julia "Julie" Taylor, at the First Christian Church in Erie, and their love endured throughout the years. Julie survives him, along with their son, Todd Johnson, and his husband, Daniel Estrada of Lenexa, who were a source of immense joy and pride for Pat. He adored his grandchildren, Garrett Johnson of Overland Park, Jenna Johnson and her husband, Reid Bruce of Lenexa, Dr. Lauren Torrey and her husband, Connor of Little Rock, AR, and Lora Rose Buntin of Glencoe, OK. Pat is also survived by his sister, Sharon Stirewalt of Chanute, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Robin Buntin, on December 3, 2003.
Pat had an adventurous spirit that took him all around the globe, and he eagerly instilled this love for exploration in all of his kids and grandkids. A lifelong learner, Pat always emphasized the importance of reading and expanding one's horizons. You could always find a new book and a sudoku puzzle next to his favorite chair, a testament to his curious mind and thirst for knowledge. Pat was also well-known for his great sense of humor, and he could effortlessly lighten the mood and bring smiles to the faces of everyone around him with a mischievous prank or playful tease.
A true pillar of the community, Pat’s intelligence, hard work, and drive served as an inspiration to all who knew him well. Whether he was helping his neighbors or having a coffee with friends at Pete’s, Pat's generosity, caring nature, and friendship were unmatched. As we bid farewell to Pat, we celebrate a life well-lived—a life that touched so many hearts and left a legacy of love and dedication. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. In our hearts forever, rest in peace, Pat.
