Sharon Esther Murphy - May 03, 1939 - April 02, 2022

Departed: 04/02/2022 (Conyers)
Obituary Preview: This is the story of Sharon E. Murphy (born on 05.03.1939), not the obituary.  Our mother, Sharon, never liked to stay in one place for any length of time. We were blessed to have had her with us for 82 years. She has moved on once again. Sharon passed away on Saturday, April 2, 2022 surrounded by her sons, daughters and grandchildren who took care of her. She boldly faced obstacles with fiery independence. She fully embraced life.  Very proud of her Irish heritage, Sharon made four trips to Ireland.  All four trips included her clan with the final trip in 2014 for her 75th birthday that even included some of her grandchildren.  Wherever she went, she enjoyed vibrant conversation with family, friends and strangers who then became friends. Sharon was a woman who made an impact and lasting impression wherever she went.
She was the proud, youngest daughter of William "Bud" Murphy who fought for fair wages and work conditions. He was a charter member of Ford Motor Company UAW local 600 in 1938. Sharon was politically active; she campaigned for the first Irish/Catholic President, John F Kennedy; she reported on the 1967 Detroit Riots for the Dearborn Times Herald and was a first generation college graduate from George Washington University in 1981 with a degree in Public Affairs & Policy. She worked for the Army Corps of Engineers in public relations on various projects of significance including the invasion of the Falkland Islands in 1983 & Hurricane Andrew in 1995.  Sharon's final career stop was at Fort Huachuca, AZ. the "intelligence ears" of the Western Hemisphere.  Additionally, she was an avid golfer.  She NEVER retired her Walter Hagen persimmon 2 wood that now holds a spot in her son Tommy's golf bag.
Sharon was also the proud mother of 6 children (the first three, Irish triplets, born within 11 months sequentially): Kathleen "Keke", Mary Kathryn "Kate" (Mike), Kelley (Tom), Margaret "Meg", Thomas "Tommy" (Jessica), and the baby, Kevin (Sonya), all of whom carry her spirit forward.  Sharon encouraged Meg's competitive Irish dancing and also coached Kevin's youth soccer team. She had great affection for her nephews Dennis & Jimmy along with nieces Colleen, Penny (Tino), Peggy (Stan) and Sheri (John). She loved her grandchildren Patrick, Ellen, Kevin, William, Allison, Emma, Nikki, Kelly Rose, Brendan, Kylie, Jawaun, Bianca and great grandchild Brendan. We know she is watching out for all who she loves with a reassuring look; perhaps from the mesa, with Barney, Molly and Cooper by her side; her green beret jauntily angled on her head;  the sun shining; the breeze blowing; the clouds rolling, the smell of her favorite lilac bushes in the air. Perhaps her mother, father, brother, sister and those she loved that have passed are with her. We know that her Irish eyes are smiling, her fist is clenched and all hell is about to break loose...SLAINTE
A memorial service to honor her will be held on Saturday, May 28 at 10:30 am at the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Conyers, GA.

Karen Lynn Foster - June 04, 1955 - March 10, 2022

Departed: 03/10/2022 (Conyers)
Obituary Preview: Karen Lynn Foster, 66, of Decatur, GA, passed away peacefully on March 10, 2022, following an 18-month battle with an aggressive cancer.
Karen was born June 4, 1955, in Quonset Point, Rhode Island, to Carolyn and Robert Foster.  She was the oldest of their six children.  As the daughter of a career Navy Supply Corps Officer, Karen moved frequently throughout her childhood, living in Port Washington, NY: Honolulu, HI; Medway, Massachusetts; Athens, Georgia; Newport and Middletown, Rhode Island; and Springfield, Virginia, where she graduated from West Springfield High School.  She was a 1977 cum laude graduate of Longwood College in Farmville, Virginia, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts with honors in English.  She earned a Master of Arts in Creative Writing from Hollins College in Roanoke, Virginia, and did postgraduate work in English at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee.
In 1982, Karen moved to the Atlanta area and began working at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as an Assistant Editor for Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR).  During her 23-year career at CDC, she also served as Writer-Editor for the Center for Infectious Diseases (1986-1988); Managing Editor, MMWR, and Chief of the MMWR Branch, Epidemiology Program Office (1988-2000); and Technical Writer-Editor, National Center for Environmental Health/Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry (2000-2005).  Since 2005, she has worked as a freelance writer/editor and editorial consultant in public health and epidemiology.  From 2009 to 2022, Karen worked as a contractor for CDC Emerging Infectious Diseases journal, serving as a technical writer-editor and subject matter expert.
Karen’s true passion was raising, showing, and breeding English Springer Spaniels.  She was a charter member of the Chattahoochee English Springer Spaniel Club of Greater Atlanta.  She has been described as the backbone of the club with her strict ethics and familiarity with the American Kennel Club rules and regulations.  She loved the breed and was determined to protect it.  Karen was on the staff of Atlanta’s Dogwood Obedience Group (ADOG), organizing seminars and special events.  She was also an active member of English Springer Rescue America, and the English Springer Spaniel Field Trial Association (ESSFTA).
Shortly before her passing, Karen finished writing her first novel, which we hope to have published in the near future.
Karen’s accomplishments, both professional and personal, are particularly remarkable given that she was born completely blind.  Multiple surgeries before she was two years old restored only three percent of her vision.  She never complained; she never sought special accommodations or pity.  Karen was fiercely independent despite not being able to drive.  She loved to travel to dog shows around the country.  Her many devoted friends were there for her to the end.
Karen is survived by her mother, Carolyn Foster; her sisters, Lisa (Mike) Hodes, Nancy (Richard) Councill, Lori (Craig) Turley, and Beth (Bill) Carrick; her brother, David (Suzy) Foster; eleven nieces and nephews; and her beloved English Springer Spaniels, Brinkley and London.  She was preceded in death by her father and her niece, Jenny Hodes.
A celebration of Karen’s life will be held on Saturday, May 7, 2022. Details to be announced at a later date. She will be laid to rest privately at The Honey Creek Woodlands, in Conyers, Georgia.

Denis Michael Blanford - May 23, 1942 - January 14, 2022

Departed: 01/14/2022 (Conyers)
Obituary Preview: My name is Denis Blanford.  I passed away Friday, January 14, 2022, and I am being buried Saturday, January 22, 2022, at 10:30 a.m.  Due to Covid, only immediate family can attend, but I’d like for you to log in virtually via this link:   https://us06web.zoom.us/j/88693564694?pwd=eEw3b2Z6MU51dWRFYTQ3dkdkcldhUT09
Please join the site a few minutes early to see a picture collage of my “catadioptric” life.
I was born in Dayton, Ohio and lived with my father, Joe, my mother, “Tutie” and my six siblings, “Pete”, Tom, David, Mary Lynn, Gary, and Kim.  I also have several nieces, nephews, and their families.
Working for NCR for 47 years, I earned and received over 40 awards and patents.  I am also an NCR Fellow, the highest award bestowed by NCR.
While working for NCR in Cambridge, Ohio, I met and married my wife, Mary. We have three beautiful daughters, Catherine, Rebecca, and Theresa.  Rebecca and her husband, Ryan, are the parents of a wonderful little girl, Isabelle (Izzy) who is my joy and delight. Through my life, I made special memories for my family.   For example, tent camping for a week in 30-degree weather in Hot Springs, Arkansas, (our favorite vacation), instead of basking in the sun in the Bahamas.  Or surprising all of them and a priest at the Blessing of the Animals by taking not only our dogs and cats but also pulling my daughters’ “little guys” (hamsters) out several of my pockets. Or telling a French policeman who was giving me a ticket for going through a yellow light “marsee bo coop” in my best Georgian drawl.  Or trying to impress Mary while we were dating by telling her I was on the national championship basketball Dayton Flyers team in the ‘60s (I wasn’t) and forgetting to tell her the truth till years later.  (I am wearing a Dayton Flyers t-shirt now, a gift from my sister, Mary Lynn in honor of that story.)
I did like all sports but played golf probably the most and the longest.  Even after moving from Ohio to Georgia, I met golfing buddies 1-2 times a year in Myrtle Beach for golfing outings.  Because of my years of golfing, my family looked for a grave site that resembled a green.  They didn’t find one, but instead found one in the woods, in the rough.  I spent time there on the golf course too! In fact, the last line of my gravestone will read, “on to the 19th hole”.
These are just a few tidbits of the fun I had and laughs I gave my family.   I hope anyone reading this can remember some funny stories with and about me too.  Thank you for being my friends and my family and for my wonderful life.  ‘Til we meet again…..
