Dorothy was born in Raleigh, North Carolina, to Roland and Annie Jones and grew up in Downtown Baltimore, Maryland after her parents moved there shortly after WWII. She attended Western High School, an all-girls high school in Baltimore. Dorothy, who went by Dottie, met the love of her life and husband of 65 years, Lewis Martin of Visalia, California, on a Streetcar in Baltimore. They married two years later in Visalia, after Lewis returned home from the Korean War. They moved back to Baltimore, and in 1961 they returned to California, settling in Lemoore.
