Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a permanent record of a person's life and legacy.

Who typically writes an obituary?

Obituaries are often written by family members or close friends of the deceased, but they can also be written by funeral homes or professional obituary writers.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include information about their life story, achievements, and personality.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the individual's life. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to several paragraphs.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the notice and make it more meaningful.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

Each publication has its own submission process, which may involve filling out a form online or contacting a representative directly. Be sure to follow their guidelines and deadlines carefully.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication and the length of the notice. Some newspapers offer free or low-cost options, while others may charge by the word or line.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to control how they are remembered and to spare their loved ones from having to do it during a difficult time.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, typically including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary should reflect the personality and spirit of the person who has passed away. Including humorous stories or anecdotes can help bring comfort and smiles to those who read it.

How do I handle sensitive or private information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive or private aspects of the person's life that you don't want to share publicly, it's best to omit them or phrase them carefully to maintain dignity and respect.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial information in an obituary?

Yes, many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial funds in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor the person's memory and support a good cause.

How long after the funeral should I wait before submitting an obituary?

The timing varies depending on the publication and your personal preferences. Some people prefer to submit an obituary immediately after the funeral, while others may wait until after the burial or memorial service.

Can I edit or revise an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's not possible to make changes to an obituary once it's been published. Be sure to proofread carefully before submission to avoid errors or inaccuracies.

How do I preserve original copies of printed obituaries?

You can laminate them, frame them, or store them in acid-free folders or scrapbooks. Consider creating multiple copies for family members or friends who may want one as a keepsake.

Can I include quotes, poems, or lyrics in an obituary?
